Dawn Experiment

#Day 26 — 15:47

The bow of B-Deck was the quietest place on the ship at this hour. Most of the crew were below, working or resting or waiting in the corridor outside the spa for a chance to lose themselves. Above, the bridge windows caught the afternoon light, turning them gold, and somewhere up there Vivienne Laurent was probably standing at the captain’s station, her hands on the rail, her eyes on the horizon.

Alexis pulled her robe tighter, though the wind was not cold. The silk was thin, the only barrier between her skin and the world, and she wore it because she had learned long ago that nakedness was a weapon, not a vulnerability. But here, alone, with no one to perform for, she felt the weight of it differently. The fabric was a costume. The body beneath was a cage.

The Blue Oasis drifted. The sea was calm, gray-green, the color of old glass. In the distance, the Mother Mercy was closer than it had been yesterday, its hull a dark shape against the water, the lifeboats tethered to it like children clinging to a parent’s hand. She had spent three days with those fishermen. Three days of bodies pressing against her, mouths searching, hands grasping. Three days of their fear and desperation transmuted into hunger, and she had given them what they needed because that was what she was made for.

It was not easy. It was never easy. But the men—the fishermen—had been worse than the women. Their need was rawer, less disciplined, and they had looked at her with the same glazed want she had seen a thousand times, a thousand faces, a thousand rooms. She had learned to bear it when she was eight. By ten, she could make herself go away while her body did the work. By twelve, she was the best in her cohort, the one the handlers sent to the most important clients, the one who could make a man forget his name and then leave him weeping with gratitude.

Career peak at fourteen, she thought, and almost laughed. The word career was absurd. She had been a product, a tool, a currency. At fourteen, she had been invited to parties where the guests were cabinet ministers and oligarchs, where the champagne was older than she was and the deals made in the back rooms could shift the trajectory of nations. She had sat on the laps of men who decided the fate of millions, and they had called her ma chérie, little one, my treasure. They had traded her like a stock option, passed her from hand to hand, and she had smiled because that was what she was trained to do.

The loneliness came later. It came in the spaces between clients, in the quiet hours before dawn when the drugs wore off and the mask slipped. It came when she was fifteen and the invitations stopped coming as often, when the handlers started looking at the younger girls with the same appraising eyes. It came when she realized that no one had ever seen her. Not once.

Except one.

She had been fourteen—still at her peak, still the prize—when she worked a yacht in the Mediterranean. The same waters as this, maybe, though she could not remember the name of the vessel or the man who had hired her. She remembered the boy. He sat on the bow every evening when the others were below, drinking and coupling and pretending the world was theirs. He was not handsome. He was not powerful. He was thin, pale, his hair the color of straw, and he never joined the parties because his heart would not let him.

If I get too excited, he had told her the first night she found him there, my heart stops. It’s a defect. I was born with it.

She had sat beside him, and he had not looked at her. Not once. His eyes were on the water, on the horizon, on the stars. He did not look at her the way everyone looked at her—with hunger, with calculation, with the dull animal want that she had learned to read in a man’s eyes before she learned to read words.

They had sat together every night after that. Sometimes they talked. Sometimes they sat in silence. He told her about his family, his doctors, the operations that had failed, the ones that might work if he could afford them. She told him nothing true, because she had learned that truth was dangerous, but she listened to his voice, and she let herself pretend that she was a girl and he was a boy and they were two ordinary people watching the sea.

He never touched her. He never wanted to. His heart would not allow it, and she was grateful for that, more grateful than she had ever been for anything. He was the only person in her life who had ever looked at her without wanting something her body could give.

She did not know what happened to him. The yacht had docked, the clients had dispersed, and she had been sent to the next assignment, the next room, the next body. She had learned not to hold on to things. But sometimes, in the quiet moments, she remembered the way the wind had sounded, and the way his voice had been steady, and the way his eyes had stayed on the horizon.

She looked up at the bridge now, the windows catching the light, and she wondered if Vivienne was there.

The deal was done. She had saved the fishermen. She had done what the captain asked, had given her body to strangers who smelled of salt and fear, and now she was waiting for something she was not sure she wanted. A date. That was all Vivienne had promised. A date, nothing more.

She will not touch me, Alexis thought. She will sit across a table and look at me with those clear eyes, and she will see me, and I will want her to want me, and she will not.

She had seen the way Vivienne looked at Aida. That woman—the one who was past her prime, whose value had been declining for years, who in the old world would have been cast aside as soon as younger faces appeared—Vivienne looked at her with something that was not calculation, not hunger, not the cold assessment of a client evaluating goods. She looked at her with warmth. With love.

Why her? Alexis asked herself, and the question was a blade she turned inward. What does she have that I don’t?

She had asked herself this before. She had watched Aida move through the ship, watched her laugh with Mei-Lin, watched her hold Chen, watched her kiss Zhao good morning in the corridor as if it were the most natural thing in the world. In the old world, Aida would have been discarded by now—too old, too used, too ordinary. But here, on this ship, she was loved. She was wanted. She had found something that Alexis could not reach.

She built a family, Alexis thought. She built a family, and they love her, and I am alone.

The loneliness was a physical thing, a weight in her chest, a cold that no amount of warmth could touch. She had tried to fill it with bodies—with the women who came to her spa, with the men who needed her, with anyone who would let her close. But the more people she surrounded herself with, the emptier she felt. They looked at her with glazed eyes, hungry mouths, and she gave them what they wanted, and they left, and she was alone again.

I am cursed, she thought. My body is a curse. It makes them want me, and it makes them blind.

She remembered the boy again. The way he had looked at the horizon. The way he had never looked at her.

She was still looking at the bridge when she felt the presence beside her.

She did not hear footsteps. She did not feel the deck shift. She simply knew, with the instinct of a woman who had spent her life reading the intentions of others, that she was no longer alone.

Sabine stood at the railing, close enough to touch, her pale hair catching the light, her face turned toward the water. She was not wearing a robe. She was dressed in the same uniform she wore for her shifts in hospitality—crisp white blouse, navy trousers, her hair pinned back. She looked ordinary. She looked harmless.

But her eyes were clear.

Alexis had seen that clarity before, in the handlers who had trained her, in the clients who had purchased her, in the men and women who had looked at her and seen not a person but a tool. It was the clarity of someone who was not affected, who was not drawn in, who was watching from a place where her power could not reach.

Impossible, Alexis thought. No one resists. No one has resisted in ten years.

Sabine turned to her, and her smile was gentle, almost kind. ”You look tired.”

Alexis did not answer. She was watching the woman’s eyes, waiting for the glaze to appear, the slackening of the jaw, the telltale signs of arousal that always came when someone stood this close. They did not come.

Sabine’s voice was low, intimate. ”I know what you are. I know what they made you for.” She paused, and her smile widened. ”I was made too. For different purposes, but the same hands shaped us.”

Alexis’s throat tightened. She had known, somehow, from the first moment this woman walked into the spa, that she was not like the others. She had felt it in the way Sabine moved, in the way she watched, in the way she took what she wanted and then stood and walked away without looking back. But she had not wanted to see it. She had wanted to pretend that Sabine was just another woman, another body, another brief distraction from the emptiness.

”What do you want?” Alexis’s voice was steady, but her hands were cold.

Sabine leaned against the railing, her posture casual, her eyes never leaving Alexis’s face. Her fingers brushed the back of Alexis’s hand, light as a whisper, and Alexis felt something shift in her chest—not arousal, not the familiar pull of desire, but something older, something she had almost forgotten how to name.

Hope.

”I want you to have a choice,” Sabine said. ”For once in your life, I want you to choose something for yourself.”

She reached into her pocket and withdrew a small card—plain white, no markings. She pressed it into Alexis’s palm, and her fingers lingered there for a moment longer than necessary.

”If you want to know more,” she said, her voice barely audible, ”come find me tonight. After the bridge is quiet. My cabin. Second deck, the one with the blue curtain.”

She smiled again, and this time there was something in her eyes that Alexis could not read—something warm, something patient, something that looked almost like recognition.

”You don’t have to be alone anymore, Alexis.”

Then she was gone, her footsteps silent on the deck, her pale hair disappearing through the glass doors. Alexis stood alone at the railing, the card cold against her palm, the weight of her loneliness pressing against her chest.

She looked up at the bridge. The windows were dark now, the light shifted, and she could not see if Vivienne was there.

She looked down at the card. Blank. No words, no symbols. Just the promise of something she had never been offered before.

A choice.

She slipped the card into her robe and turned away from the water. The sea was dark now, the horizon erased, and somewhere in the depths of the ship, Sabine was waiting.

Alexis walked back toward the spa, her steps slow, her thoughts tangled. She did not know what the woman wanted. She did not know if she could trust her. But for the first time in her life, someone had looked at her with clear eyes and offered her something other than hunger.

You don’t have to be alone anymore.

She wanted to believe it. She wanted to believe that she could have something other than the endless consumption, the empty bodies, the hollow rooms. She wanted to believe that she could be seen.

She tucked the card deeper into her robe and kept walking.

The corridor was quiet, the spa waiting, and somewhere in the dark water, something else was waiting too. But she did not know that yet. For now, there was only the card in her pocket, and the promise of a choice, and the fragile, dangerous hope that she might not have to be alone.
