Dawn Experiment

# Day 17 - 7:14

At first it was the ache. Dull, then sharp, then everywhere at once. Aida floated in the halfway state, not quite awake but hyperaware of her body, as if some cruel trainer had slipped lactic acid into every cell. The ceiling of the suite was unfamiliar—a ripple of condensation, streaks from rainwater crawling across the polished teak ceiling panels and down the curved glass of the skylight, droplets catching the dim light like scattered diamonds on Italian silk. Beyond that, the sound of the downpour was a constant, a roaring white noise that only made the quiet inside more absolute.

She was not alone.

Mei-Lin was the closest, arm draped over Aida’s stomach, cheek mashed against Aida’s bare shoulder. A thin thread of drool had snaked from Mei-Lin’s lips, pooling on the old blue blanket. Aida’s own arm was tangled beneath her; she tried to extricate it, failed, and instead traced the curve of Mei-Lin’s spine—each vertebra a tiny ridgeline under sweat-shined skin. Her skin was smooth everywhere—no pubic hair, just the small silver glint of her clitoral ring catching the dim light.

Next to Mei-Lin lay Zhao, sprawled with total disregard for dignity or covers. His torso was a geography of bruises, yellowed at the edges and blue in the centers. His nipples were surrounded by purplish bruises and deep scratches that trailed down his ribs like tributaries, and on his hip a semicircle of fingernail cuts, some already clotting over. He looked dead, but the soft snore at every exhale betrayed him.

And then Vivienne: the diplomat-turned-captain, her body half-splayed across Zhao’s flank. She slept on her stomach, one arm under the pillow, the other curled around his wrist. Her breast had fallen into the crook of Zhao’s hand, the nipple pinched slightly by the automatic tension of his sleep. Between her legs, there was also no hair—just smooth skin. Vivienne’s hair fanned out across his chest like a pale golden halo, but closer to the scalp, Aida noticed the streaks of dark—dried blood. The ship’s new captain had lost none of her poise, even like this. She had the most peaceful expression in the bed, as if nothing on earth could disturb her.

Aida wanted to move. She wanted to rise, to shower, to do anything but lie there and feel the muscle memories of the last thirty-six hours crawl through her veins. But the weight of Mei-Lin’s arm—so light and so deliberate—made her pause. She listened to the rain, and the room’s silence, and the faint creak of the ship settling.

It was a storm day. No sunrise, no light except the grey that filtered through the dome above. Aida remembered, in a distant way, the weather patterns of this ocean: endless cycles of humidity, the sky a single mass of cloud, the water too warm and too bright in the interludes between storms. Today was all clouds, all rain, the world pressed close. In the suite, it was warm, and the smell of sweat and hair and old bedsheets and soap.

She focused on Mei-Lin’s hand. Even in sleep, the girl’s thumb made small, searching circles on Aida’s belly. There was an intimacy in it that made her throat tighten. Aida closed her eyes, letting the sensation distract her from the ache.

She thought: I could live here. I could let myself be nothing but this, just warmth and softness and a bedful of people she didn’t have to perform for. No one watching. No makeup, no scripts. Just the private, shared aftermath.

But already her mind pushed forward. In two hours, the treatment cycle would begin again: Mei-Lin’s unique milk, a palliative for the virus in its later stages, had to be messaged and put to work. a long line of desperate and tired women would need it. Vivienne would have to be on the bridge—first official day as captain, which meant at least a dozen hysterics to calm, a thousand micro-decisions to make. Even now, the urge to plan, to take charge, gnawed at Aida’s insides. She wanted to wake them all, to start the morning, to take control before the next bad thing.

She resisted. Instead, she memorized the bed.

All four of them were nude; that had been Mei-Lin’s suggestion last night. Something about “skinship,” she said, the contact of bare skin as a cure for trauma. Aida had laughed at the word, then admitted it felt good. Better than the drugs, or the hour of sleep she’d caught in the equipment locker in her past job before the world end.

She looked down the line of bodies, at the way Zhao’s hand relaxed in Vivienne’s grasp, at the way Mei-Lin curled her legs around Aida’s, at the way Vivienne’s foot rested on top of Zhao’s. A chain of accidental intimacy, improvised from need.

There were bruises everywhere, cuts and scrapes, even a burn on Aida’s own shin where she didn’t remember how she got it in the chaos of the past two days. They looked like a crew pulled from a shipwreck, flotsam washed up on the last safe mattress in the world.

The rain intensified, hammering the steel hull until the sound ate all thought. Aida took a deep breath, then another, letting the noise wash over her.

She was surprised by the steadiness of her own pulse. She did not want to move. She wanted this moment to last forever, or at least until the next alarm.

She did not know if it would. She suspected it wouldn’t.

Still, she pressed her hand over Mei-Lin’s, squeezing gently, then allowed her eyes to close again.

For one more minute, she let herself be just a body in a warm bed. Nothing else.

# Day 17 - 7:30

Aida could not stop watching the bodies. The way they spilled over one another, the way each curve seemed to defy gravity in youth—how smooth and new they all were. Her own body, by contrast, was a collage of old stress lines, stretch marks, the fade of color where once there had been a more brazen pinkness. She compared every breast, every nipple, every patch of skin. Even her own cunt, once the star of a thousand screens, had the pale and slightly collapsed look of the veteran. The other girls—girls, she called them—looked like the covers of old digital magazines: untouched, invincible, the kind of flesh that never asked for permission.

She felt tears well up before she could even name the feeling. She tried to push it down, but the pressure only grew. She remembered—absurd, but true—the day she’d announced her retirement. Her agent at the time had offered no congratulations, only a cursory, “It was time, Aida. You know how it is.” It hadn’t even been her real name, but it was the only name anyone in the business had used for her. She was thirty-six, and suddenly there were no more “young wife” or “cheating co-ed” roles. Instead, just “mature woman,” “auntie,” or—if she was lucky—“celebrity comeback,” always cast as the punchline. She’d known. She’d always known this is how it ended. That didn’t make it hurt less.

The truth was, she never meant to leave the industry. She just couldn’t stand being wanted for something she no longer was.

She remembered her last audition. It was for a “VIP Yacht Weekend,” the kind of softcore masquerade for bored rich men that paid well if you could keep your mouth shut and your stomach strong. She’d lied about her age, let the makeup artists stretch the skin at her jaw until she looked almost like her old self. The other girls on the boat were eighteen, nineteen. She’d felt like their mother, or worse, like a teacher abandoned at prom. But when the cameras rolled, she saw herself on the monitor and realized she didn’t hate what she saw. It was just different. That was all.

Blue Oasis had been her last gamble, a chance to prove she was still worth something. The parties here were infamous—every girl brought on as a ”guest” knew what the code meant. It was supposed to be a weekend, then a payday, then home. But the world ended, and instead of a fresh start, Aida found herself stuck in an endless loop of crisis and trauma, day after day.

She looked at the women in bed with her—Mei-Lin, so impossibly soft, skin like cream and breasts that seemed always on the edge of overfull; Vivienne, the aristrocrate’s daughter, her blonde hair and pale skin perfect even after a night of sweat and panic; Zhao, the accidental man, his body marked up from the women who couldn’t get enough of him, but already toughening at the edges, building the scars that would tell the story of survival.

Aida was oldest by at least fourteen years, and she felt every day of it. She felt it in her bones, in the ache in her back, in the way her own flesh shifted under her touch.

She had played mother to so many in her old life—new actresses, girls from broken homes, desperate women who thought they could game the system but got eaten by it instead. She’d taught hundreds how to breathe through the fear, how to fake an orgasm, how to take a punch without breaking. But in the end, she’d never been able to keep even one of them safe. They came, they shot their scenes, and they left, some to obscurity, some to even worse.

This was different. Zhao, Mei-Lin, even Vivienne—they weren’t just projects. They were her world now. It was a new family, one that didn’t need her expertise now, only her presence.

She didn’t know what to do with that.

She felt a heat toward Zhao that frightened her. It was not the raw hunger of the job, nor the transactional calculus she’d run a million times. It was not even a maternal urge that she often felt towards him. It was a want that had no category—a need to be wanted, maybe, or to be claimed, or simply to be seen by someone who wasn’t there to use her and throw her away.

Is this love? she wondered. But she’d never felt love—not from a man, and barely from her mother before she died. The wall inside her, the one she’d built over twenty years, still held firm. It had never let even a crack through. She was the master of compartmentalization, the queen of professional warmth.

But now, looking at Zhao, she felt the wall bend. She saw the future, and for the first time, it was a blur. Was this love? Family? Or something else, some nameless fusion of all the things she’d never been able to admit to herself?

She didn’t know. She only knew she was terrified.

The wall held, but only just.

She remembered the uncle who would lock the bathroom door, his breath hot with whiskey as he pressed her against the sink until her spine bruised. The neighbor who paid her mother to ”babysit” when she was eleven. Her first shoot—how the director had slapped her face when she froze, then held her jaw so tight it dislocated while he screamed spittle into her eyes. The after-party where three men took turns holding her down, the champagne bottle forced so deep she tasted blood for days after, her underwear gone when she woke shivering in that bathtub, ice-cold water turning pink around her thighs, certain she was already dead but somehow still breathing.

That wall was all that kept her together. It was the only defense she had left.

She thought, for a moment, about ending it. Not in a dramatic way—she was too practical for that. Just quietly, one night, slipping out of the suite and into the black water. But she knew she wouldn’t do it. She never had. The wall always held.

Until now.

Now, every time she looked at Zhao, at Mei-Lin, at the impossible perfection of Vivienne, she felt a new pressure behind her ribs. A nakedness that had nothing to do with being unclothed. She wondered if she would ever be able to let it go, or if she’d carry it like a hidden cancer until the world ended again.

She looked at Vivienne, still asleep, her face pressed against Zhao’s arm. Aida’s fingers twitched with an urge to brush back that perfect strand of hair falling across Vivienne’s cheek. She recognized the woman as family now—her brain had accepted it—but something remained locked behind that wall inside her chest. The romance novels hidden beneath her mattress back home had promised her passionate love after retirement, exclusive and all-consuming. Now those books were ash, and here she was, surrounded by bodies that meant survival, not the breathless devotion she’d secretly hoped would find her someday. Whatever this new feeling was—this strange, collective intimacy—it had no name in any story she’d ever read.

She wondered if that meant she was weak.

She tried to swallow her tears, but the sobs came anyway—quiet at first, then louder, until the sound was the only thing she could hear.

She pressed her face into Mei-Lin’s hair—silky yet slightly coarse at the roots, smelling of coconut oil and that faint metallic tang of fear-sweat that had become so familiar these past weeks—and let herself fall apart.

# Day 17 - 7:53

Mei-Lin woke to the sound of Aida’s crying. Not the sharp, birdlike chirps of some morning-after catharsis, but a continuous, low, strangled hum. Mei-Lin felt it as a vibration first, Aida’s body shuddering against her arm, then as a wetness seeping into the pillow below. She opened her eyes and saw Aida’s face mashed against the sheet, her mouth slack, her breath coming in short, irregular snorts.

Mei-Lin did not ask why. She did not ask anything at all. She simply wrapped herself around Aida’s back, drawing her in, burying her nose in the tangle of black hair. She inhaled the familiar mixture of sweat and that hint of old perfume, and underneath, the faint musk of milk. She pulled Aida tighter, fingers sliding across the ribs, hand flattening against the quivering belly.

Aida’s body softened into it. The fight drained out of her, and she clung to Mei-Lin’s arm as if it was a flotation device in open water. Mei-Lin rocked her, making a small, soothing circle with her palm, humming a tune from childhood—just the shape of melody, not a song. She kissed Aida’s ear, then her cheek, then the ridge of her eyebrow, as if reconstructing a map of lost affection.

Aida cried harder. It was an ugly sound, but Mei-Lin thought it was beautiful. She understood, in a way language didn’t allow. She remembered her own mother’s breakdown, one time only, when a letter from home arrived and everything had changed overnight. She remembered holding her mother in the tiny, damp kitchen, both of them sobbing in the smell of cabbage and mold, neither knowing what to say. You held on, and you survived. That was all.

“没事,” she whispered, “Mei shi,” meaning it’s nothing, it’s all right. She didn’t know if Aida understood, but the rhythm of the words was enough. She kissed her again, this time on the mouth, a slow and careful press that said nothing more than: I am here.

Aida tasted of tears and salt, and she opened her mouth, just slightly, and let Mei-Lin’s tongue in. They kissed for a long time, neither moving further, just holding and breathing.

Zhao woke with a start, the sound of sobbing cutting through the dreamless dark. His first instinct was panic—something was wrong, someone was dying—but when he saw Aida’s shaking body pressed into Mei-Lin’s, he relaxed. The two women were locked together, nothing violent, just need. Zhao did not know what to do, but he wanted to help.

He reached over Mei-Lin and enveloped them both, his arm clumsy and heavy. It made a sandwich of heat, Mei-Lin and Aida at the center. He pressed his face into the back of Mei-Lin’s neck and inhaled, the scent as comforting as fresh rice. Aida’s sobbing didn’t stop, but it changed. There was less terror now, more release, like a wound had been lanced.

No one said anything. No one needed to.

Aida let herself collapse into the tangle. The wall inside her remained, but riddled now with fissures that let warmth seep through. Where mortar had crumbled away, she felt flesh pressing into the gaps—fingers, shoulders, cheeks—their heartbeats vibrating through the weakened structure, holding it together in a different way than before. Her hand searched for purchase and found Mei-Lin’s thigh. She squeezed it, then Zhao’s wrist. They were all there. She wasn’t alone.

She wept. She shook. She trembled and gasped, but she did not let go.

The noise woke Vivienne. She opened her eyes and watched, at first with the detached curiosity of an anthropologist observing a new species. She saw the three bodies fused together, the way the muscles and limbs twisted into a single, living sculpture. Vivienne felt an urge to take a mental snapshot, to preserve the tableau, but her own heart betrayed her. It thumped harder, and she felt her own breath go ragged.

She hesitated, for a moment, unsure if she belonged in the scene or was simply a voyeur. She waited for someone to tell her no. No one did. Then she reached out—slowly, carefully—and touched Zhao’s back, letting her fingers trace the arch of his spine. The skin was warm, slick with sweat, alive. She let her other hand drift to Mei-Lin’s shoulder, and then, in a slow, tentative motion, she pressed her body against the trio.

She ended up behind Aida, her chest to Aida’s back. She hesitated, unsure, but then wrapped her arm around Aida’s waist, her hand finding the hollow just below the ribcage. She felt the shudder of sobs, the flutter of breath, and she joined them, the four of them locked together in a single, unbreakable mass.

Aida felt it, the difference: the new heat on her back, the smell of Vivienne’s hair, sharper and cleaner than the rest. She’d been naked with Vivienne before, but never like this. That time had been about teaching, about performance, about showing Vivienne how women’s bodies could fit together. This was not that. This was not sex or therapy or training. It was need, pure and urgent, a requirement as basic as food or air.

She let herself be held, by all of them. She felt a chunk of the wall crumble away—not all of it, not even most of it. The barrier constructed through decades of pain held stubbornly in place, its foundation too deep to be washed away in a single night. But through the new gap poured something she’d never known: the warmth of flesh against hers, creating a pocket of safety she hadn’t believed possible. She cried until she could cry no more, and then simply breathed, listening to the chorus of other lungs around her.

It was not a cure. The pain was not gone. The old wounds were still there, waiting. But for now, she was held together not by a wall, but by flesh. By the bodies of the people who needed her as much as she needed them.

Outside, the rain lashed the dome, and the ship rocked gently on the waves. Inside the suite, the storm was over, at least for a little while.

The four of them lay tangled, a single organism in the warmth of the bed.

Aida closed her eyes, and for the first time in a lifetime, she slept.
