Dawn Experiment

# Day 17 - 01:47

The docking alarm snapped everyone awake, though few had really slept. Sanctuary—someone had finally painted the name on the pressure hull, all capitals, no ornament—slammed its bow against the old cradle under Blue Oasis and nearly split a seam. The sound rattled through every stanchion and steel rib.

Kim Minjung was first to the hatch. She’d piloted the sub through the last half-mile, arguing with AURA’s override in two languages and a storm of inventive profanity. At the docking collar, she caught a wrench, slammed it twice into the release lever, and then braced her feet for the recoil. The manual bolt fired, jamming the forward escape into the hull of Blue Oasis with a judder that knocked three women to their knees.

“Compartment holds,” Kim said, voice hoarse but satisfied. She didn’t look back, just grabbed the ladder rungs and started up.

The air on Blue Oasis was different—colder, sharper, a memory of antiseptic and ozone. The survivors poured out, every one of them expecting a bullet or a virus or a scream. Instead, just silence and the faint click of the ladder as each woman clambered up, blinking in the harsh deck lights.

Zhao came last. Vivienne, Aida, and Mei-Lin flanked him—one on each side, not just steadying his broken body but forming something he’d never expected: a unit, a clan. When Vivienne’s eyes met his, he remembered her words from the night before—”I’m a Zhao now. Not a Laurent.”—and something warm bloomed beneath his pain. Pride, maybe. The way Aida and Mei-Lin exchanged glances told him they’d heard it too. His legs shook with every step, his cock numb and swaddled in a towel, the pain barely dulled by Saanvi’s synth-opiates. He was alive, which was more than he’d hoped for, but now survival meant something different. These women weren’t just fellow survivors. They were his family. He still wasn’t sure if he was grateful to be alive, but he was grateful for this.

The sub’s ladder exited through the same forward stairwell they’d descended hours earlier, that straight metal ladder at the bow that had once seemed merely functional but now felt like climbing out of a grave. When Zhao’s head cleared the last rung, he saw the women of Sanctuary scatter in all directions: some dropped to hands and knees and kissed the bare steel of Blue Oasis’ deck, some just wept, a few ran for the corridor and vanished. He recognized three from the pressure hull’s hell: a kitchen worker, a deckhand, and, to his shock, Isabelle Grant. Her eyes were sunken and her hair in ropes, but she grinned at him through the dark like a revenant.

He gripped the edge of the hatch and let the wave of nausea pass. Then he saw the next odd thing—no one from Blue Oasis’ original crew waited for them. No security, no medical. Not even a voice on the PA.

Mei-Lin just wrapped her hand in Zhao’s sleeve and started walking, not fast, but with a focus that warned off any attempt to slow her.

They made their way toward the central atrium. The hatch between the crew deck and the main lounge had been bent inward—explosives, maybe, or just the force of someone desperate to get through. A woman in Red Solstice tactical gear lay sprawled across the threshold, half her skull missing. Another uniformed body was slumped in the corner, chest riddled with exit wounds that had painted the wall behind her. The smell hit Zhao first: gun oil, sweat, something charred and unmistakably human.

Vivienne stepped over the corpse, careful not to touch it. ”They put up a fight.”

Mei-Lin nudged the tactical boot of the nearest body with her toe. ”These are all Solstice.” She had a strange calm about her, a steadiness that didn’t match the carnage.

They found the rec room two doors down. The door was unlocked, but a streak of dried blood marked the threshold. Beyond it, three more bodies in enemy uniforms were arranged in a neat row, hands crossed over chests. Zhao leaned into the doorway, shoulder-first, and saw—nothing else.

Empty chairs, overturned tables. A glass of water, still half-full, on the main counter. On the floor, a single cartridge case. He knelt to pick it up—9mm, stamped with the vector logo of the Red Solstice. He turned it in his fingers, the brass still faintly warm.

Mei-Lin moved to the bar and checked the back counter. She nodded. “They were here. Not long ago.”

Aida, eyes wide, said, “Look.”

Zhao followed her gaze. On the far wall, next to the projector screen, a drawing tacked up with a bent staple. One of the women had sketched it with found crayons—childlike in its execution but deliberate in its hope—a sun above a blue line, three stick figures holding hands. The largest wore a captain’s hat. The smallest figure—a woman—had blue hair rendered in wild, electric strokes that spilled beyond the outline of her head like an aura. The third, in the middle, was labeled ”ZHAO” in capital letters that slanted unevenly across the page.

He swallowed. His throat hurt, as if he’d swallowed a handful of gravel.

He turned to the group. “I want to see the bridge.”

Mei-Lin shook her head. “No. Not that way.”

He realized she was right. The ship’s fallback was always the rec room, not the bridge. If anything survived, it would be there—or, after, the atrium.

He turned and led them up the companionway to the second deck.

Here, the damage was obvious. Shell casings everywhere, dark smears on the floor, a shattered panel at the far end of the corridor. Blood, more than before. Mei-Lin slowed as they passed the galley, and Zhao saw why: two bodies, side by side, heads shaved, faces set in expressions of total surprise. Both wore the crimson tactical gear of the Red Solstice—invaders, one still clutching her sidearm, the other with a chest wound so massive it had nearly torn her in half. Point-blank range. Someone on Blue Oasis had fought back hard.

Aida said nothing, but she pressed her thumb to the center of her palm, a gesture Zhao had seen her make before in moments of extreme stress—a childhood habit she’d never explained and he’d never asked about.

They moved on.

The atrium was packed. At least fifty women filled the first floor, their bodies pressed together in a sea of exhausted faces and tattered clothing. No divisions remained between them now—all survivors of the same nightmare. As Zhao and his party entered, the crowd parted without resistance, creating a narrow path that led toward the center of the room.

He saw Maggie first. She was sitting with her back against the central stairs, her uniform dark with blood, one sleeve torn off and the arm underneath bent at an angle no arm should ever make. Her face was calm, even serene, but her eyes were red and swollen, and her jaw trembled like she was fighting to keep from shattering. In her lap, wrapped in the battered dark blue of a bridge officer’s coat, lay the body of Captain Verne.

For a moment, no one spoke. The silence was thick, the air damp and heavy.

Zhao knelt. He reached for Maggie, but she didn’t move. She looked down at Verne, then up at him, and said, in a voice so small it was almost a child’s, “She saved us.”

Vivienne stepped forward. “How?”

Maggie wiped her nose on her good hand, the gesture ugly and pure. ”When the boarding team hit, she shoved me through the hatch. I was screaming, begging her not to—” Her voice broke. ”She sealed it from her side. Through the window I saw her take position, buying time while I ran. Her last order was to set up at the rec room choke point. I heard her pistol fire until it stopped. Then—” Maggie’s voice cracked. ”I did what she ordered. I waited at that last choke point. Then suddenly the Solstice team just... retreated. Called back to their ship. She knew Victoria’s diversion would work.

Aida covered her mouth, eyes brimming.

Maggie’s tears started to fall, first slow, then all at once. She pressed her face into Verne’s hair, her body racking with grief.

The crowd held still. Zhao saw familiar faces, all transformed by fatigue and a kind of reverence: Linh, her hair matted and face puffy with sleep deprivation; Kim, still smeared with sub lubricant; Elena, supporting a collapsed survivor, both of them clutching each other like drowning swimmers. Even Isabelle, half-dead an hour ago, stood perfectly straight, her hands at her sides.

Vivienne placed her hand on Maggie’s shoulder. ”She was the best of us,” she whispered.

Kim pushed through, clutched Zhao’s hand. ”You’re here. You made it.”

A figure materialized from the shadows at the edge of the crowd—Victoria, her face half-blackened with soot, a makeshift bandage wrapped around her forearm. She limped forward, her tactical vest hanging open where bullets had punched through the ceramic plates. Her eyes never left the captain’s body as she raised three fingers to her brow in silent salute, jaw clenched against whatever pain wracked her body.

He nodded, but all he could look at was Verne’s face—so clean, so peaceful in death.

He reached out, closed the captain’s eyes. He didn’t believe in souls, but he wished, in that second, for something to carry her onward.

Someone started a song. It was a fragment—just the first few bars of an old anthem, something half the world used to know by heart. The women in the atrium picked it up, voices weak at first, then stronger, until the floor vibrated with the sound.

Zhao turned to the others. “She did it. She saved everyone.”

No one disagreed.

Aida knelt next to Maggie, pressing her shoulder to the broken woman’s back.

Mei-Lin stroked Verne’s hand, whispering a prayer in her dialect, the words soft and untranslatable.

Vivienne drew Zhao close, her arms wrapping around his chest. For the first time in weeks, he let himself cry.

Above, the lights flickered, then steadied. Outside, the black water was flat, almost gentle. For the first time since it started, no one was coming for them.

Blue Oasis drifted on, silent and leaderless, into a world remade.
