Dawn Experiment

#Day 25 - 21:30

The treatment suite was too quiet. That was the first thing Aida noticed when she closed the door behind the three women who had come. The lamps were dimmed, the bath steaming, the towels arranged in neat stacks by the lounge. Mei-Lin had prepared everything with her usual care—cushions fluffed, tea warming, the low table set with cups and a plate of the small cakes she had been saving. It should have felt welcoming. Instead, the empty spaces where ten women should have been sitting pressed against Aida’s chest like a weight she could not name.

She stood at the window, her back to the room, watching her own reflection in the dark glass. Her treatment robe was tied loosely at her waist, the silk cool against her skin. The sea was invisible tonight, the sky overcast, the horizon erased. She could have been anywhere. She could have been nowhere.

Behind her, Victoria had already made herself comfortable, sprawled across the largest cushion, her boots kicked off, her jacket unzipped. ”Nice place you’ve got here. Very cozy. Very… therapeutic.” She picked up one of the cakes, examined it, took a bite. ”Mei-Lin, these are dangerous. You’re going to spoil us.”

Mei-Lin laughed, the sound soft, a little forced. ”That’s the idea.”

Elena settled on the edge of the lounge, her hands folded in her lap, her posture still carrying the formality of the hospitality manager she had been before the world ended. But her eyes were warm, and when she looked at Aida’s back, something in her expression softened. ”Aida. Come sit with us.”

Aida did not move. Her hands were pressed flat against the windowsill. She could feel the glass cool beneath her palms, could see the faint reflection of the room behind her—Mei-Lin pouring tea, Zhao emerging from the kitchenette, Victoria already on her second cake, Elena watching her with quiet patience.

Ten women were supposed to be here tonight. Ten. And only three came.

The numbers scrolled through her mind again, the list she had memorized, the names she had grouped by reading, by need, by the careful calculus she had thought would save them. All cancelled. All but these three.

They chose Alexis. They chose easy. They chose consumption.

She had not been enough. The treatment team had not been enough. The family she had built, the work she had poured herself into, the walls she had spent decades dismantling so she could be present, so she could be real—none of it had been enough.

Victoria’s voice cut through the spiral. ”Aida. I know that look. That’s the ’I’m going to stand there until I dissolve into guilt’ look. Very dramatic. Very French. But also very boring.”

Aida turned. Victoria was grinning, but there was something underneath it—not mockery, not quite. Recognition, maybe. The kind of recognition that came from having stared into the same abyss.

”Come on,” Victoria said, patting the cushion beside her. ”You’re not going to save anyone by turning into a statue. And I didn’t walk all the way down here just to watch you brood.”

Elena rose, crossed to Aida, and took her hand. Her grip was warm, steady. ”You did everything you could. The rest is not your fault.”

Aida opened her mouth to argue, but the words wouldn’t come. Because Elena was right, and also wrong, and also standing here, in this room, on this night, choosing her.

She let Elena guide her to the cushions. Mei-Lin pressed a cup of tea into her hands. The warmth seeped into her fingers, and she held it like a lifeline.

Zhao sat across from her, his knee brushing hers. He did not say anything. He did not need to. His presence was enough.

Victoria raised her cup. ”To the three idiots who didn’t know what they were missing.”

Linh laughed, the first real sound she had made all evening. ”I’m not an idiot. I just have good taste.”

”You chose us over the sex zombie,” Victoria said. ”That’s either good taste or a complete lack of self-preservation. I haven’t decided which.”

They talked. About nothing, at first—the cakes, the weather, the absurdity of Victoria trying to teach Linh how to fish. The conversation drifted, found its rhythm, built. Aida listened, her tea cooling in her hands, the weight in her chest slowly, slowly loosening.

Victoria was telling a story about her first week on the Blue Oasis, the chaos of learning the ship’s layout, the time she had walked into the wrong cabin and found Sophie Laurent reviewing crew dossiers in her dressing gown. ”She looked at me like I was something she’d scraped off her shoe. I’ve never been more impressed in my life.”

Elena shook her head, smiling. ”You’re impossible.”

”I’m charming. There’s a difference.”

The laughter came easier now. Aida found herself smiling, then laughing, the sound surprising her. Zhao caught her eye across the table, and something passed between them—relief, maybe, or gratitude, or just the simple recognition that they were here, together, and that was enough.

It was Linh who threw the first pillow.

It came out of nowhere—a soft, down-filled missile that caught Victoria square in the face. For a moment, no one moved. Victoria sat very still, the pillow in her lap, her expression frozen somewhere between shock and delight.

”You did not just—”

Linh was already reaching for another cushion, her face alight with mischief. ”What are you going to do about it?”

The second pillow caught Victoria in the chest. She lunged, and the fight was on.

Pillows flew. Cushions scattered. Victoria tackled Linh onto the lounge, and they rolled, laughing, hair tangling, limbs akimbo. Zhao grabbed a cushion and joined the fray, his aim terrible, his enthusiasm boundless. Mei-Lin shrieked as a pillow caught her in the back, and then she was in it too, her laughter high and bright.

Aida and Elena sat apart, watching, their cups forgotten. Elena’s hand found Aida’s, squeezed it. ”Let them have this,” she said quietly. ”They need it.”

Aida nodded. But when a pillow sailed past her ear and struck the wall behind her, when Victoria looked at her with that wild, reckless grin and said, ”You’re not too old for this, Aida,” she found herself reaching for a cushion.

She threw it. Victoria ducked. It hit Zhao instead, and he collapsed onto the cushions in mock defeat, pulling Mei-Lin down with him. Victoria whooped. Linh was laughing so hard she could barely breathe. And Aida, standing in the middle of the chaos, her robe slipping off one shoulder, her hair falling loose, felt something in her chest crack open—not pain, not grief, something lighter.

Victoria grabbed her wrist, pulled her into the pile, and then there were hands everywhere, arms tangled, bodies pressed together, laughter filling the room like it had never left.

It was a long time before anyone noticed that the pillows had been abandoned, that the laughter had softened into something else. Victoria was sprawled across Linh, her head on Linh’s stomach, her shirt rucked up, a strip of bare skin visible above her waistband. Zhao had Mei-Lin tucked against his side, her robe open, her breast pressed against his arm. And Aida was curled against Elena, her back to Elena’s chest, Elena’s arm around her waist.

The kissing started without anyone deciding it. Victoria tilted her head up, found Linh’s mouth, and Linh met her with the ease of women who had learned each other’s bodies weeks ago, in a different room, a different life. Mei-Lin’s hand slid into Zhao’s hair, pulling him down, and his mouth found hers. Elena’s lips brushed Aida’s ear, soft, questioning.

Aida turned in her arms, and they kissed. It was not urgent, not hungry. It was the kiss of women who had held each other through worse, who knew that this was not escape but connection, not consumption but care.

Clothing came off in the spaces between kisses, in the pauses where laughter still lingered. Victoria’s shirt was gone, revealing full, high breasts that needed no support, then Linh’s. Mei-Lin’s robe pooled on the cushions, and Zhao’s hands found her breasts, her hips.

Elena slipped Aida’s robe from her shoulders, and Aida let her, let herself be seen, let herself be touched. The silk pooled around her waist, and Elena’s hands followed, warm and slow, cupping the heavy fullness of Aida’s breasts. Elena lowered her head, her mouth finding a darkened nipple, drawing from it a sweetness that made Aida gasp and cradle Elena’s head against her chest.

Victoria was the first to reach for Zhao. She rolled onto her back, pulling him with her, her legs already parting, her smile sharp and bright. ”Come here. I’ve been patient.”

He laughed, the sound catching as she guided him inside her.

But Linh was not content to wait. She moved behind Victoria, her body curving against Victoria’s back, her legs sliding between Victoria’s thighs. Her hands found Victoria’s breasts, cupping them, her thumbs circling the dark nipples. Victoria gasped, her hips bucking against Zhao, and Linh laughed, low and warm.

”Like this,” Linh murmured. ”Together.”

They shifted, finding the rhythm, Victoria on her back with Linh half on top of her, their bodies pressed together, breasts touching, thighs intertwined. Zhao moved between Victoria’s legs, driving into her, and Linh’s hips rocked against Victoria’s thigh, her wetness slick against Victoria’s skin.

Mei-Lin moved behind Linh, her hands finding the curve of Linh’s ass, her fingers slipping between her legs. Linh’s cry was sharp, surprised, and then she was pushing back against Mei-Lin’s hand, her rhythm quickening.

Zhao’s thrusts were deep, steady. He could feel Victoria tightening around him, her breath coming in gasps. He reached down, found the place where she and Linh were pressed together, and his fingers found Linh’s clit, slick and swollen.

Victoria came first, her body arching, her cry muffled against Linh’s shoulder. Zhao did not stop. He pulled out, shifted, and Linh guided him into her, her legs already open, her body already rising to meet him.

She was beautiful like this—her dark hair spread across the cushions, her skin flushed, her breasts small and round, her nipples small, dark against her pale skin. Her body was lean, built for the long hours she spent on the bridge, but there was softness too, in the curve of her hips, in the swell of her belly, in the way her thighs trembled as he entered her.

She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulled him deeper. ”Yes,” she breathed. ”Like that.”

Victoria moved behind her, her hands finding Linh’s breasts, her mouth on Linh’s neck. Mei-Lin’s fingers were still between Linh’s legs, circling, pressing, finding the rhythm that made Linh gasp. And Zhao was inside her, and she was everywhere, her body a knot of pleasure, her hands reaching for anything she could hold.

When she came, it was with a cry that seemed to come from somewhere deep, somewhere that had been waiting for this. Her body clenched around him, her hands gripped his shoulders, and she held him there, held him inside her, as the waves broke and broke and broke.

He came with her, his release sudden and complete, filling her. Victoria kissed Linh’s neck, her shoulder, her lips. Mei-Lin’s fingers slowed, gentled, and Linh let herself fall back against the cushions, her chest heaving, her eyes closed.

For a moment, no one moved. Then Linh laughed, the sound soft and surprised. ”That was—”

”Yeah,” Victoria said, her voice thick. ”It was.”

Zhao pulled out slowly, carefully, and Linh made a small sound at the loss. Victoria pulled her close, and Mei-Lin curled against her side, and the three of them lay tangled together, their breathing slowly steadying.

Elena watched from the edge of the lounge, her arm still around Aida. ”They’re going to need a minute.”

Aida smiled, the first real smile she had given all night. ”Let them have it.”

Elena rose, crossed to Zhao, and took his hand. ”Come with me. Let them rest.”

He followed her to the bath, his body still humming, his legs unsteady. The water was warm, steam rising in soft curls. Elena stepped in first, then Zhao, and they settled together, her back to his chest, the water lapping at her shoulders.

Elena let out a long, slow breath. ”This is nice.”

Zhao’s hands found her waist, her hips, the soft curve of her belly. ”You deserve it.”

She laughed, quiet. ”I’m not sure about that. I was terrible at this, the first time.”

His hands stilled. ”Elena—”

She turned in his arms, facing him, her knees on either side of his thighs. ”No, let me.” In the dim light, her body was real—the softness at her waist, the freckles scattered across her tanned shoulders like constellations. Water beaded on her breasts, tracing paths around large brown areolas that darkened at their centers. She was not young. She was not trying to be. Her skin carried the honest scent of a day’s work—salt and something uniquely hers, warm and human, untouched by perfumes or lotions. When he breathed her in, his fingers tracing the damp curve where her neck met her shoulder, he found only Elena herself—earthy and real.

”I was thinking of my husband that night. During the first treatment, when we tried. I was thinking of him, and I was afraid, and I made you feel like it was your fault when it wasn’t.”

Zhao shook his head. ”I didn’t know what I was doing. I was just—”

”Afraid.” She finished for him. ”I know. We both were.” Her hand found his face, her thumb tracing the line of his jaw. ”But you’re not afraid anymore.”

He leaned into her touch. ”I still get afraid. I just… don’t let it stop me.”

She smiled. ”That’s what courage is.”

He kissed her then, soft at first, then deeper, and she opened for him, let him in. His cock was hard again, pressing against her thigh, and she shifted, guided him inside her, and they both gasped at the slow, familiar heat.

She began to move, a slow, unhurried rhythm, her hands on his shoulders, her face close to his. ”I never thought I would be here. Like this.” She laughed, a little breathless. ”I was married for twenty-three years. To a good man. A conservative man. We lived in Spain, in a house with a garden, and I thought… I thought that was my life.”

Zhao’s hands moved up her back, held her close. ”What happened?”

”The pandemic. The job. I took this position because I was laid off from my old company, and the money was good, and I thought… one more voyage. One more, and then I would go home, and I would be with him, and everything would be fine.” She paused, her rhythm slowing. ”I chose the job over him. I chose the money, the travel, the… whatever I was looking for. And then the world ended, and I couldn’t choose anymore.”

Her eyes were wet, but she did not stop moving. ”I don’t know if he’s alive. I don’t know if he died alone, or if he found someone else, or if he’s out there somewhere, waiting for me. I don’t know.” She kissed Zhao, quick and fierce. ”But I’m here. And you’re here. And this—” She gestured at the room, at the women sleeping on the bed, at the warm water around them, at the way his body fit inside hers. ”This is not what I planned. But I’m glad it’s what I have.”

Zhao held her, let her set the pace, let her take what she needed. ”I’m glad too.”

She laughed, the sound breaking. ”You’re half my age. You shouldn’t be comforting me.”

”I’m not comforting you. I’m listening.” He brushed the hair from her face. ”You do that for everyone else. Someone should do it for you.”

She kissed him again, deeper, and her hips moved faster, her breath coming in gasps. The rhythm between them built steadily, water lapping against the sides of the bath with each movement. Minutes stretched as they found a language without words—slowing when either came too close to the edge, eyes meeting in silent understanding. Her fingers traced the muscles of his back, memorizing him. His palms cupped her face, then slid down to where they joined. When she finally tensed, it wasn’t sudden but inevitable, like a wave that had been building from miles away.

”Zhao—”

He held her, rocked with her, let her fall. She came with a cry that was half sob, half release, her body clenching around him, her face pressed against his neck. He followed, his release coming slow and deep, and they stayed like that for a long moment, breathing together, the water cooling around them.

When she pulled back, her eyes were red, but she was smiling. ”Thank you.”

He shook his head. ”You don’t have to thank me.”

”I do.” She touched his face. ”For listening. For being here. For making me feel like I’m not alone.”

He kissed her forehead, her cheeks, her lips. ”You’re not alone.”

They sat together in the bath, the water now tepid, the steam faded. Elena rested her head on his shoulder, and he held her, and for a while, neither of them spoke.

It was Elena who broke the silence. ”Do you ever think about the future? What happens if we survive? What will this ship become?”

Zhao was quiet for a moment. ”I try not to think about it. It’s too big.”

”But you do think about it.”

He nodded. ”I think about keeping my family together. That’s my future. Everything else is…” He searched for the word. ”Noise.”

Elena smiled. ”Your family. Aida, Mei-Lin, Vivienne. Chen now, I think.”

”My core,” he said, nodding. His fingers traced circles on her shoulder. ”The others—you, Victoria, Linh—you’re like...” He paused, searching for the right words. ”The branches extending from our tree.”

She laughed, soft. ”That’s quite a forest you’re cultivating.”

”It’s growing.”

She was quiet for a moment. Then: ”I’ve been watching the crew. The women who don’t have anyone. Who work, and eat, and sleep, and stare at the sea. Who don’t laugh the way we laughed tonight.” She looked up at him. ”I want to do something about that.”

”What?”

”A matchmaking program. Nothing formal, nothing forced. Just… a way for people to find each other. To build the kind of family you’ve built.” She paused, her voice uncertain. ”Is that foolish?”

Zhao shook his head. ”It’s the best idea I’ve heard in weeks.”

Elena’s smile widened. ”You’re just saying that because I’m naked.”

”I’m saying it because it’s true.” He kissed her again, quick and warm. ”When this is over—when Alexis and Carmona and the Commission are dealt with—we’ll have time to build something. Something that lasts.”

She kissed him back, and for a moment, they both let themselves believe it.

The bath was cold now. Elena rose, and Zhao followed, and they dried each other with the soft towels Mei-Lin had laid out. When they stepped back into the main room, the others were asleep.

They were tangled together on the bed, a knot of limbs and hair and bare skin. Victoria had her face pressed into Linh’s neck, her arm thrown across Mei-Lin’s stomach. Mei-Lin was curled against Zhao’s side of the bed, her hand still reaching for where he should have been. Aida was at the edge, her back to the others, her robe draped over her like a blanket.

Zhao crossed to the bed, pulled the blanket over them, and bent to kiss Aida’s cheek. She stirred, murmured something, settled. He kissed Mei-Lin’s forehead, and she smiled in her sleep.

Elena watched from the doorway, wrapped in a robe, her hair still damp. When he turned back to her, she was smiling.

”I can sleep on the couch,” she said.

He shook his head. He crossed to the lounge, rearranged the cushions, spread the extra blanket, and settled into the curve of the couch. Then he reached for her hand.

She came to him, let him pull her down beside him, let him wrap his arms around her and pull the blanket over them both. The couch was narrow, but they fit, her back to his chest, her head tucked under his chin. His arm draped over her side, hand coming to rest on the warm fullness of her breast. She smelled clean, like the yacht’s expensive soap, but underneath was something warmer—her own scent, like sun-warmed skin.

”Thank you,” she whispered.

”For what?”

”For this. For tonight. For reminding me why we’re fighting.”

He kissed her hair. ”We’re not done fighting. But we can rest. Just for tonight.”

She closed her eyes, and he held her, and the ship hummed beneath them, steady, constant, carrying them south. The threats were still there—Alexis in her spa, Carmona somewhere in the dark, the Commission waiting. But in this room, in this moment, there was warmth, and there was laughter, and there was the quiet certainty that they would face whatever came together.

Elena’s breathing evened out. Zhao let his eyes close, let himself drift. Outside, the sea was dark, the horizon invisible. But beneath them, the engines hummed their steady lullaby, pushing them through dark waters toward whatever waited beyond the horizon—a tomorrow they would face together.
