Dawn Experiment

#Day 23 - 9:00

The council meeting was brief. Vivienne kept it to essentials: the fishermen were stable, the first two batches were back on their boat, and the couple would arrive this morning. Then Alexis.

The compromise Zhao had proposed the night before was presented, debated, and passed. Core crew would need clearance from Victoria; the rest could choose for themselves. It wasn’t perfect. No one pretended it was.

Sophie voted against. Her hand rose alone, a white flag of dissent that no one else picked up. When the motion carried, her face didn’t change, but her fingers pressed into the table like she was holding something down.

The others filed out—Kim with her tablet, Linh already talking about drone patterns, Maggie and Victoria exchanging something low and dry. Vivienne gathered her notes, slower than necessary, and when the door closed behind the last of them, Sophie was still there.

She hadn’t moved. Her hands were folded now, the same pose she’d held through a hundred meetings, a thousand decisions. But her eyes were fixed on Vivienne with an intensity that made the air feel thin.

Vivienne waited.

”You’re going through with it.”

It wasn’t a question. Sophie’s voice was flat, the same register she used for inventory reports and personnel assessments. But underneath it, something else—something that might have been anger or might have been fear.

”The deal is made,” Vivienne said. ”The fishermen are alive because of it.”

”The fishermen.” Sophie’s laugh was soft, almost gentle. ”You made a deal with a monster for thirty strangers. And now you’re going to let her touch you. For what? A few days of borrowed time?”

Vivienne’s hands tightened on her tablet. ”You voted against the compromise. We know.”

”I’m not talking about the compromise.” Sophie stood. Her movements were slow, deliberate, the way she’d always moved when she was about to say something she knew would hurt. ”I’m talking about you. Walking into her rooms. Alone. For a date.” The word landed like something rotten. ”Do you know what she is? What she’s done?”

Vivienne didn’t answer.

”She was passed around the Côte d’Azur like a party favor before she was old enough to drink. Men, women, groups—it didn’t matter. She was engineered to be consumed. And she learned to enjoy it. Or she learned to pretend so well no one could tell the difference.” Sophie’s voice sharpened. ”By the time Blanc tried to buy her, she’d already been owned by half the men in my address book. I made sure he didn’t succeed. I would have burned the bid myself if I’d had to.”

Vivienne’s breath caught. ”You sabotaged it.”

”I kept her off this ship.” Sophie’s jaw was tight. ”I knew what she was. What she’d do. And now my daughter is going to walk into her room and offer herself up like all the others.”

The silence stretched. Vivienne felt it pressing against her chest, the weight of years, of everything she’d never known.

Vivienne ran her finger along the edge of her tablet. ”We’re having dinner. That’s all I agreed to.”

”Would it have changed anything?” Sophie’s voice cracked, just slightly. Her eyes held the certainty of someone who had watched this same scene unfold a dozen times before—the dinner, the wine, the inevitable surrender that followed.

”You’re so determined to be different. To build a world where people aren’t used and thrown away. But the world doesn’t work like that, Vivienne. It never has. The only way to survive is to know what people are worth—and to use them accordingly.”

Vivienne stared at her. This woman, her mother, who had orchestrated everything from the shadows, who had chosen which women would board the ship, who had let Blanc’s journals be discovered, who had watched Verne die without lifting a finger to stop it.

”You’re wrong,” she said. Her voice was steady. ”I don’t know how to build a better world. But I know I can’t build it by becoming you.”

She turned toward the door.

”Vivienne.” Sophie’s voice followed her, sharp now, cutting. ”I have seen what Alexis does to people. She strips them. Hollows them out. And when she’s done, there’s nothing left but the parts she wants to play with. If you go to her, you will regret it. Not tomorrow, not next week—but someday. And when that day comes, you will carry it alone. Because that’s what happens when you choose to be different.”

Vivienne stopped at the threshold. She didn’t turn around.

”The decision of the council stands,” she said. ”You’ve had your chances, Mother. Every decision you’ve made was for yourself. For the Laurent name. For the world you wanted to build, not the one we’re living in.” She paused. ”I’m done waiting for you to be something you’re not.”

She walked out. Behind her, the door clicked shut, and she heard nothing else—no footsteps, no voice, no movement at all. Just silence, and the weight of something breaking that would never be fixed.

#Day 23 - 9:00

The aft deck was bright, the morning sun painting the water in shades of gold and green. Emeka stood at the rail, watching the lifeboat approach, and beside him, Zhao and Aida waited with the easy silence of people who had done this before.

Vivienne slipped into place beside Zhao, and his hand found hers immediately—a brief squeeze, a question. She squeezed back. Later.

The lifeboat bumped against the platform. Emeka moved to help, his voice low and steady in his language, and moments later two figures climbed onto the deck.

The man was tall, lean, with the same weathered skin as Emeka and a face that held its grief in the set of his jaw. He moved carefully, like a man who had learned to expect the ground to shift beneath him. The woman was smaller, her hair wrapped in a bright scarf, her body still carrying the softness of recent birth. She held her husband’s arm as she stepped onto the deck, and for a moment her eyes swept the ship—the gleaming rails, the glass towers, the women in their uniforms—with an expression that might have been wonder or might have been fear.

Emeka spoke to them quietly, his hand on the man’s shoulder. The man—Chidi, Vivienne remembered from the briefing—nodded once, then looked at Iqbal.

Iqbal approached with her tablet, reviewing the test results. Clean. No signs of other disease. Viral loads in the mid-fifties. They had time. Not much, but enough.

Emeka caught Vivienne’s eye and tilted his head toward the rail. She followed him, leaving Zhao and Aida to guide the couple toward the treatment room.

”They’re afraid,” Emeka said quietly. ”Not of you. Of what comes after.”

Vivienne watched the three figures disappear through the glass doors. ”We all are.”

Emeka was silent for a moment. ”My brother has not touched his wife since the child died. Not once. He was afraid of what it would mean. That it would be a betrayal.” He paused. ”I told him: the dead don’t ask us to stop living. They ask us to live for them. I don’t know if he believed me.”

Vivienne had no answer. She watched the doors close, and tried not to think about what would happen on the other side.

The treatment suite had been prepared with care. Mei-Lin had laid out fresh towels, filled the bath, arranged the tea things on the low table. She stood at the door now, smiling, waving, her presence as warm and unthreatening as she could make it.

Chidi stopped at the threshold.

His hand tightened on Adaeze’s arm, and she stopped with him, her eyes fixed on the room beyond. The big bed, the slanted window, the soft light. Aida saw the calculation in his face—the weighing of need against something deeper, something that had no name.

”It’s all right,” Aida said. Her voice was gentle, unhurried. ”If you’re uncomfortable, we can stop. Anytime. If all you want is tea and the view, that’s what we’ll have.”

She gestured to the lounge, where the tea things waited. ”Nothing has to happen. You’re safe here.”

Chidi’s jaw worked. He looked at Adaeze, and she looked back at him, and something passed between them—too fast, too private to read. Then he stepped forward, and she followed, and the door closed behind them.

Zhao watched them settle on the lounge, watched Mei-Lin pour tea with the same easy grace she’d used a hundred times before. He was nervous. He’d been nervous all morning, since last night really, since Aida had asked him how he wanted this to go and he’d realized he didn’t know.

Treating a woman in front of her husband. He’d done a lot of things in the past weeks, things he never thought he’d do, things he still didn’t quite understand. But this was different. This was a marriage, a real one, with vows and history and a child they’d buried at sea. And he was supposed to insert himself into it.

He’d told Aida as much, lying beside her in the dark, their bodies still tangled from the night before. I feel like retreating into my corner again.

She’d turned to him, her face soft in the dim light. Except now your corner has three other people in it.

That’s what I’m afraid of, he’d said. That it’s not just my corner anymore.

It’s not, she’d said. That’s the point.

Now he sat on the edge of the bed, as far from the couple as the room allowed, watching them struggle with the tea. It was too bitter, maybe, or too strange—they made faces, set their cups down. Adaeze’s eyes moved around the room, never settling: the slanted window, the big bed, the bath already steaming, the shelves with their books and ornaments, the kitchenette where Mei-Lin had vanished from sight.

Chidi was thinking. Zhao could see it in the set of his shoulders, the way his hands rested on his thighs, not relaxed, not tense, just waiting.

Then he spoke.

His English was halting, accented, the words coming slowly like stones pulled from deep water. He said this was too hard. He said he knew they were trying to help. But the thought of his wife with another man—he couldn’t. He couldn’t.

He stopped. His hands were fists now, pressing into his thighs.

Aida didn’t move closer. She stayed where she was, her voice low and steady. ”Would it help if there was less exposure? Less undressing? If you participated more?”

She let the questions hang, one by one. Chidi’s eyes moved to her, then to Zhao, then back to his wife. Zhao saw the calculation—the weighing of the treatment team, their bodies, their faces, what they represented. Then Chidi looked at Adaeze.

She was looking at her own hands. Her fingers moved, a small restless pattern, anxiety and fear working themselves out in the only way she could control.

Zhao knew that gesture. He’d done it himself, a hundred times, when the world was too much and the walls were closing in.

Chidi nodded. Once. Slow. Zhao couldn’t tell which terms he’d agreed to.

Aida’s voice was soft. ”Would you like to take a bath first? Together? Just to feel refreshed?”

She gestured toward the bath, and Chidi’s eyes followed. It was prepared the way they always prepared it—steam rising, petals floating, the water at that precise temperature that felt like being held. A luxury. A kindness. A space to breathe.

He looked back at Adaeze. She didn’t nod, didn’t speak, but something in her posture shifted—a loosening, a surrender.

Chidi nodded again.

Aida rose. ”Take your time. I’ll join you in a little while, so you can get used to having someone else in the space with you.” She glanced at Zhao. ”Wait by the bed. Don’t undress. I’ll signal when.”

Then she was gone, slipping toward the walk-in closet where she kept the robes, leaving Zhao alone with his instructions and his nerves.

The couple walked toward the bath slowly, their steps uncertain on the polished floor. When they reached the edge, Chidi looked back at Zhao—a long, measuring look, not hostile, not afraid, just seeing. Zhao understood. He rose, crossed to the kitchenette, and made himself as small as possible. Just enough space to see the bath from the corner of his eye, to catch Aida’s signal when it came.

Only then did Chidi turn back. He undressed first, his movements quick, almost furtive. Then he helped his wife, his hands gentle on the fastenings of her clothes, his face turned away from her body as if the sight of her was something he wasn’t ready for.

They stepped into the bath together, and the water closed around them, and for a moment they just sat there, side by side, not touching, not speaking, just being.

Zhao watched them from his corner. He saw the way Adaeze’s shoulders dropped, inch by inch, as the warmth seeped into her. He saw the way Chidi’s hand found hers under the water, hidden, private. He saw them begin to talk, their voices low, their language strange and musical, words he couldn’t follow but rhythms he understood.

A normal couple, he thought. They’d probably expected exclusivity when they married. Children, a home, a life. Now they were here, in this room, with strangers, because the alternative was death. Would they be normal after this? Would she be okay, feeding other women on that boat, letting strangers touch her body so her people could survive? They would survive, maybe. But at what cost?

He looked at them, at the way Chidi’s thumb moved against Adaeze’s knuckles, the way she leaned into him just slightly, the way their voices rose and fell like water over stones. They would survive. But they would carry this. The way Emeka carried the weight of a choice he’d made on a jetty, the way Verne’s crew carried the memory of her sacrifice, the way Zhao himself carried the submarine and everything that happened there.

He wondered what they would become. Probably not the Blue Oasis. Their ship was different—families, maybe, men and women together, a different kind of survival. He wouldn’t be surprised if some of the women on that boat were wives and sisters, not the beautiful strangers who had been curated for this vessel.

What would they become?

The couple was talking more freely now, their voices lighter, their bodies relaxing into the water. Adaeze laughed at something Chidi said, a small sound, surprised and genuine, and Zhao felt something ease in his chest.

Then Aida appeared.

She’d changed into a robe, soft silk, the color of deep water. She moved to the edge of the bath and sat, her feet bare, her hair loose, her presence as calm and steady as the ship’s engine hum.

The conversation died. Adaeze straightened. Chidi’s eyes fixed on Aida, then jerked away, fixed on the ocean through the slanted window, then back, then away again. He couldn’t seem to stop looking, and he seemed to hate himself for it.

Under the water, his wife moved. A small gesture, hidden, private—Zhao couldn’t see it, but he saw the effect. Chidi’s shoulders eased, just a fraction.

Aida asked them how they were feeling. Did they need water? She poured from the pitcher on the bath’s edge, and they drank, and Zhao watched, and he marveled at how easily she did this, how naturally, how right.

She asked if she could join them.

The bath was big enough for six. Chidi didn’t answer, his eyes fixed on the window, his jaw tight. Adaeze nodded.

Aida rose. She untied her robe slowly, not seductively, just unhurried, and let it fall. Her body was the same as always—the soft curves, the full breasts, the skin that seemed to hold light. She stepped into the water, settled across from them, and the silence that followed was not afraid, just waiting.

She told them about herself. What she did, how the ship worked, what they’d faced since the pandemic began. Stories of the Red Solstice, of Verne’s last stand, of the submarine and the mass treatment and the long nights in this very room. She told it like she was telling a story to children, not hiding the hard parts, but not dwelling on them either.

Chidi started to talk.

His English was rough, but he had words. He was part of Emeka’s crew, one of the original six. His family had run fishing operations for generations. When the pandemic started, Emeka had gotten a call from the village, and they’d turned back, and they’d seen people fighting on the jetty, and Emeka’s wife was one of them.

He told it flat, the way people tell things they’ve said a hundred times, the edges worn smooth by repetition. They’d bought the children enough time to jump, to swim toward the boat. His wife had been carrying a toddler, couldn’t fight, jumped too. The boat happened to be nearer to her, so Emeka had pulled them in first. And then there wasn’t time for his own children.

The words stopped. The silence was thick enough to drown in.

When he spoke again, his voice was lower. The child died later, from the virus. They’d buried him at sea, because his body was already turning grey, and they couldn’t keep him.

He talked about the fish then, the way they’d survived, the pattern of sickness and retreat, the long hunger when the fish stopped coming. Aida listened, and Zhao watched, and he understood that this was not a story. This was a life, a marriage, a grief that would never fully close.

Then Chidi stopped. He looked at Aida, at the room, at the bed waiting, and he asked about the treatment.

Aida explained the options, the same way she’d explained them a hundred times before. Then she asked what they were comfortable with.

A long silence. Then, softly, she suggested that maybe they could start with the wife. Warm her up, let her husband be with her first, let their bodies remember what it was to be together.

Zhao knew what she was doing. He’d seen her do it before, a dozen times. Arousal would mask the fear, open the way. It was practical. It was necessary. It was—

What if the man has sex with Aida?

The thought came out of nowhere, sharp and cold. He pushed it away. He’d seen her with other men, dozens of men, sometimes thirty at once in those old videos. This was nothing. This was treatment.

But it wasn’t nothing. It was his wife.

He’d never thought about it before. He’d been so focused on himself, on his own discomfort, on what it meant for Chidi to watch his wife with another man. He hadn’t considered the other side. He hadn’t considered that he might be the one watching.

Isn’t that what the man was worried about?

He was no different. He’d been so busy trying to be generous, trying to be fair, that he hadn’t seen himself in the mirror. Chidi’s fear was his fear. Chidi’s jealousy was his jealousy.

He took a breath. Held it. Let it go.

Beside him, Mei-Lin had appeared, drawn by his agitation or just sensing what he needed. She slid into his arms without a word, her body warm against his, her hand finding his and holding.

He watched Aida rise from the bath. This time Chidi didn’t look away. He watched her dry herself, her body a beacon in the soft light, and Zhao saw the hunger in his face, the want he couldn’t hide.

She offered towels to the couple, and they rose quickly, wrapped themselves, and followed her toward the bed. They kept their towels on, even as Aida gestured for them to lie down.

Then she smiled. ”Hold your wife,” she said. ”Kiss her.”

Chidi hesitated. Then he turned to Adaeze, and his hands found her face, and his lips found hers, and the kiss was awkward at first, then deeper, then something else entirely. Their towels fell away, and Zhao saw her body for the first time—the softness of recent birth, the fullness of her breasts, the nipples dark and heavy.

His wife’s body, carrying the child they’d lost.

Chidi’s erection was visible now, his body giving in to what he’d been fighting. Aida moved behind Adaeze, her hands finding the woman’s shoulders, her breasts, her milk-heavy breasts, and when she pressed, the milk sprayed, catching Chidi by surprise.

He stared at his wife’s body, at the milk running down her skin, at the stranger’s hands on her. Then he bent his head and began to suck.

Zhao’s heart was pounding. He could feel Mei-Lin’s arms around him, her presence grounding him, but he couldn’t look away. Aida was watching him, checking, and he forced a smile, gave a thumbs up he didn’t feel.

He’d thought he was ready. He’d watched her with other men for years, from the safety of his screen, and he’d told himself he could accept it. But this was different. This was real. This was his wife.

Is this how she feels when I’m with Mei-Lin? With Vivienne?

He’d never asked. He’d never wanted to know. But now he understood, or thought he did, and the understanding was a weight he didn’t know how to carry.

Aida’s hands were on Adaeze’s breasts, teaching, guiding. The wife’s hands were on her husband’s head, and his hands were on her hips, and they moved together, relearning each other. His hand slipped, found Aida’s breast, jerked away, returned. Aida let him touch her.

Their eyes met across the room. Aida’s face was calm, but her eyes were asking: Are you okay?

Mei-Lin’s arms tightened around him. He held her, and he nodded, and Aida’s relief was visible even from here. She made a small gesture with her hand—stay—and turned back to the couple.

The husband moved up to kiss his wife. Aida guided her hand to his cock, and her hand joined it, two pairs of fingers on him, and the sound he made was something Zhao had never heard before. Then Aida’s hand moved lower, checking, preparing, and when she was satisfied, she guided him into his wife.

They began to move together, slow at first, then faster. His hands were firm on her hips, and Aida moved behind him, her body pressing against his back, her breasts against his shoulders, her mouth at his neck.

Zhao watched. He watched his wife kiss another man’s shoulder, watched her hands slide down his chest, watched her body curve against his back. Mei-Lin was undressing him now, her hands gentle, and he let her, because he couldn’t have done it himself. She knelt before him, her breath warm against his skin, and took him into her mouth. He hardened despite himself, his body responding even as his eyes remained fixed on Aida.

He watched his wife pleasure another man, and something was happening inside him, something he couldn’t name. It was jealousy, yes. But it was something else too. Something that felt like the edges of himself softening, expanding, making room for something he hadn’t known was there.

Aida signaled. It was time.

Zhao moved to the bed, his cock slick from Mei-Lin’s mouth, and positioned himself behind Adaeze. Aida moved in front of Chidi, arching her back, and he understood: this was the exchange, the mirror, the understanding between them.

Chidi looked at him, and Zhao looked back, and in that look was everything: the fear, the want, the sacrifice, the love. The man nodded, once, and Zhao nodded back.

We’ll take care of each other’s soulmate gently.

Zhao entered Adaeze slowly. She was wet, ready, but her body tightened at the intrusion, and she made a small sound that might have been pain. Zhao stopped, waited. Her husband reached out, touched her face, said something in their language—soft, tender, hers.

She relaxed. Her body opened. And Zhao began to move.

The rhythm was strange at first, four bodies learning each other, finding the shape of what they needed. Zhao caught the scent of Aida—that familiar jasmine and salt he’d know anywhere—now mingled with the foreign musk of another man’s skin. His nostrils flared, something primal responding before his mind could process it. But then the rhythm found itself, and they moved together, two husbands, two wives, each watching the other’s spouse, each holding the other’s beloved.

Aida’s face was flushed, her eyes half-closed, and she was watching him, watching him, and her lips moved, and he heard her whisper: I love you.

He knew the words were meant for him—the shape of her mouth formed his name like a prayer—but the sight of her body arching against another man’s still pierced him somewhere tender and unguarded.

He was inside another woman, and another man was inside his wife, and they were moving together, breathing together, surviving together. Something in him that had been clenched for weeks, months, years, began to loosen.

He felt the climax building, felt Adaeze’s body tighten around him, felt the husband’s rhythm quicken. The air filled with her scent—earthy, primal, almost spiced—so different from Aida’s familiar sweetness that it momentarily shocked his senses. They moved faster, harder, his nostrils flaring with each breath of this foreign perfume, chasing something none of them could name.

And then they were there, all of them, together, and the world went white, and for a moment there was nothing but the pulse of blood and the gasp of breath and the knowledge that they had done this, together, and they would carry it forever.

They separated slowly, reaching for each other’s partners like magnets returning home. Zhao pulled Aida into his arms, and she kissed him, hard, and he kissed her back, and her hands cupped his face, and she said thank you, and he didn’t know what he’d done to deserve her gratitude, but he took it.

The couple was holding each other, whispering, and when they looked up, their faces were different. Adaeze glanced at her wrist monitor—the dawn meter reading had dropped to 9%. Her husband’s eyes widened at the number, a tentative smile breaking across his face like the first light after a storm. Not healed—nothing could heal that grief. But there was something new between them now: hope.

Mei-Lin appeared with towels, with water, with tea. The couple showered together, then Zhao and Aida did the same, and when they came out, the tea was warm and the couple drank it, all of it, without making a face.

Aida talked to them about the next steps, about feeding the other women, about maintaining lactation. They listened like students, nodding, asking questions, and Zhao watched them and thought: They’ll survive. They’ll carry this, and they’ll survive.

When they walked back to the aft deck, Emeka was waiting. Vivienne was there too, standing apart, her face professional, her eyes scanning them for signs of what had happened. The goodbyes were brief, the words simple, and when the lifeboat pulled away, Zhao felt something ease in his chest.

Then Vivienne was there, her arms around him and Aida both, her captain’s mask dropped, her voice raw. ”Are you okay? Are you both okay?”

Zhao looked at Aida. She looked back at him.

”I think so,” he said. He didn’t know what had shifted in him, what he’d become in that room. He didn’t know if Aida felt the same, or if she’d always known, or if there was something in her that had shifted too.

But he was back with his family. His arms were around them, and theirs around him, and the sun was warm on the water, and somewhere out there, the lifeboat was carrying a couple who had survived another day.

He held them close, their warmth against him a temporary shelter from the questions that would come with tomorrow’s light.
