Dawn Experiment

#Day 19 — 23:47

The deck was quiet at this hour, just the hum of the engines and the distant slap of water against the hull. Zhao limped along the starboard side, his fishing rods slung over one shoulder, the cooler dragging behind him on its wheels. It was full—twelve good-sized mahi-mahi, enough to keep the galley busy for another day.

The freezer was already stocked from last night’s haul. Stavros’s supplies had filled every available space—crates of canned goods, vacuum-sealed proteins, even fresh vegetables that made the crew weep when they saw them. But Zhao couldn’t stop. The memory of hunger was too fresh, too sharp. Those days of meager rations, of watching his family’s faces grow hollow, of calculating how many more meals until they started looking at each other differently—he never wanted to live through that again.

So he fished. Every night. Every morning. Even when his body screamed for rest.

Even when he was running from other things.

He limped past Chen’s cabin and stopped.

The door was closed, as always. But light bled from underneath—the blue-white glow of laptop screens, of hard drives spinning, of code scrolling into infinity. Nadia had set up a cot inside days ago. She barely left. Neither did Chen, except when absolutely necessary, like yesterday on the bridge.

Is she ready?

The question surfaced unbidden. He pushed it down.

Does it matter? I’m not.

He stood there for a long moment, listening to the faint hum of machinery, the occasional click of keys. Somewhere in that room, Chen Wei was fighting a war no one else could see. Writing code that might save them all. Burning through what little strength she had left.

And he couldn’t help her. Not with that.

Not with anything.

He turned away and limped the last few meters to the treatment suite.

The door opened, and he stopped on the threshold.

Something was different.

The suite had always been warm—soft lights, comfortable furniture, the lived-in chaos of four people sharing too small a space. But tonight it felt... greener. Small pots of herbs lined the windowsill—basil, mint, something he didn’t recognize. A larger shrub had appeared near the balcony door. Boxes and crates were stacked neatly against the far wall, salvaged goods from Stavros’s ship organized with military precision.

And at the lounge table, three women sat waiting for him.

Aida. Mei-Lin. Vivienne.

Three pairs of eyes. Three different intensities. Three women who had, over the past weeks, become the pillars of his world.

Trouble, he thought.

”Zhao.” Aida’s voice was calm, but there was something underneath it. ”Sit down. We need to talk.”

He set down his rods, parked the cooler by the door, and crossed to the kitchenette without a word. Washed his hands. Washed his face. Stalled as long as he could.

They know. Of course they know. They always know.

He dried his hands on a towel, took a deep breath, and walked to the table. Sat across from them. Directly across from Vivienne, which meant directly in the line of fire.

Three pairs of eyes. Judging. Waiting. Seeing.

He already knew what they wanted to talk about. Had known for days. Had been dreading it for days. Hiding from it for days.

Why would you run from three beautiful women? he asked himself bitterly. Any man in the old world would kill to be in your position.

But he already knew the answer.

Aida leaned forward. ”How are you feeling, Zhao? Really.”

No point lying. Not to her. Not anymore.

”My body hurts,” he said. ”Everything hurts. The pain comes and goes, but it’s always there underneath. I’m not ready.”

He expected her to push. To mentor. To say the things she always said—you’re stronger than you think, we believe in you, we need you.

She said nothing.

Instead, her face did something he’d never seen before. A flicker of resignation. Of anxiety. Of something that looked almost like fear.

His stomach tightened.

He looked at Mei-Lin. She was smiling—she was always smiling, even when she wasn’t. That gentle, perpetual warmth that had saved him so many times. He looked at her when Aida was too intense, when Vivienne was too sharp, when the world was too much.

She smiled at him now. But there was worry behind it.

He looked at Vivienne last.

Her face was perhaps the most beautiful on the ship—classical, aristocratic, perfect. But it was the last face he wanted to see tonight, sitting directly across from him, because her eyes held that look.

The surgical look. The one that said: Stop running. You can do this. We need you.

He’d seen it before. The night they saved Verne. The night she gave him her first time, desperate and determined, willing to do anything to keep the captain alive.

That look had saved Verne—for a few more days, at least.

That look had changed everything between them.

And now it was back, aimed at him, and he felt the weight of it pressing down on his chest.

I wish there was another vector, he thought. I wish I could just... rest. A few more days in my corner. That’s all I need.

Back in the old world, it would have been easy. He would have retreated to his room, pulled up Aida’s videos on his laptop, and let her voice—her image, her presence—carry him through. She would have been there, on his screen, safe and distant and manageable.

But now she was real. Now she was here. Now she was so much more than a name on a video file.

And it made retreating to his corner so much harder.

What’s happening, Zhao? he imagined her thinking. I thought you’d changed. I’m disappointed in you.

He looked down at his hands. They were shaking.

Vivienne stood.

She crossed to the cabinet, opened it, and took out a small bottle. Pills. She set them on the table in front of him.

”For the pain,” she said as gently as she could.

He looked at the bottle. Then at her. And suddenly he remembered.

That night. Verne dying on the floor. Vivienne’s face, pale and determined. Her voice: ”Make it count.” Her body, giving him something she’d never given anyone, because they had to save the captain. Because there was no other choice.

His eyes widened.

Nope, his body reacted. Not this time. It’s not going to work.

But it was too late.

Vivienne took a deep breath. Held his gaze for one long moment.

Then she leaned across the table and kissed Aida.

Their lips met like a question. Aida’s hands froze mid-air, caught between pushing away and pulling closer. The rigid line of her shoulders softened as Vivienne lingered, patient and insistent. A small sound escaped Aida’s throat. Her eyelids fluttered closed, and the seam between their mouths deepened.

Mei-Lin’s eyebrows shot up. But even surprised, even caught off guard, her face was still smiling—that perpetual, gentle warmth that defined her.

Then Mei-Lin closed the distance between them, her lips finding the space where their mouths met.

The three of them melted together at that junction, a trinity of sighs and shared breath, as if they’d discovered some ancient secret meant to be spoken only in this language of touch.

Zhao felt something stir in his groin. Pain, yes—the familiar ache that had been with him for days. But something else, too. Something that had been hiding.

He opened the pill bottle, shook one out, swallowed it dry.

Layer by layer, their clothing surrendered to gravity.

The kiss deepened between them, evolving from question to statement. Three silhouettes merged in the soft light, curves meeting curves, skin discovering skin in tentative brushes that grew bolder with each breath. When Mei-Lin’s fingers traced the outline of Aida’s breast, then claimed it with gentle possession, Aida’s surprise escaped as sound against Vivienne’s lips. Vivienne received it like sustenance after days of hunger.

Mei-Lin dipped her head downward.

Her lips closed around Aida’s nipple, tongue circling the hardened peak. Aida tilted her chin toward the ceiling, a soft sound breaking from her throat. Vivienne observed them briefly, pupils dilated against pale irises, before lowering her own mouth to the same breast.

Vivienne and Mei-Lin converged on Aida’s breast, their mouths working in tandem. Aida clutched their heads against her chest, fingers threading through their hair, her need unmistakable in the pressure of her grip.

Mei-Lin broke away, finding Vivienne instead. Her lips closed around Vivienne’s nipple, drawing a sharp intake of breath as Vivienne’s spine curved upward in silent offering.

Between them both, Aida captured Vivienne’s mouth in a kiss that spoke of hunger rather than tenderness. All the while, Mei-Lin continued her ministrations, her tongue leaving invisible calligraphy across flushed skin.

Zhao felt the pain intensify. He shook out another pill, swallowed it.

The corner is getting farther away, he thought. They’re pulling me out.

He clutched at the edges of his consciousness, grasping for the safety of withdrawal, but their eyes—Aida’s knowing, Vivienne’s determined, Mei-Lin’s gentle—locked onto his resistance and drew him inexorably forward.

The images came.

The submarine. The mass treatment. Bodies pressed together in the dark, desperate and dying. The smell of fear and sweat and blood. The sound of moaning that wasn’t pleasure, wasn’t pain, was something in between—the sound of people fighting not to die.

His own body, broken and bleeding, forcing itself to continue because if he stopped, people died.

Verne’s memory ambushed him. Not the submarine horror—earlier. The captain’s quarters bathed in shadow, her weight shifting beneath him on the narrow bunk, that catch in her throat when she whispered his name—something raw and vulnerable he’d never heard from her before or since. ”Don’t let me disappear.”

And then the memory of after: Maggie kneeling in the atrium’s center, Verne’s lifeless form gathered in her arms. The improvised burial shroud of torn metal. The finality of that moment when the captain disappeared beneath the surface, leaving only expanding ripples in the darkness.

Is that what this is? he wondered. Is that why I’m hiding?

Verne’s face flashed before him—alive under his hands one moment, cold and still the next. His efforts had bought her days, not the lifetime he’d promised himself he could deliver.

His chest tightened as failure washed over him, rising like a tide determined to drown what little confidence remained.

What’s the point? I couldn’t save her. What makes me think I can save anyone?

But Verne was gone. The submarine was behind him. The pain was real but fading—maybe the pills, maybe something else.

Before him, a trinity of desire unfolded—hands exploring curves, lips discovering secrets, eyes making promises. They weren’t just waiting; they were beckoning him from his hiding place. The ship needed him. Chen needed him. This makeshift family needed him.

Aida’s knowing gaze. Vivienne’s determined touch. Mei-Lin’s gentle invitation. Three gravitational forces, each pulling him further from the safety of his corner.

Vivienne’s hand disappeared between Aida’s thighs.

Her mouth remained fixed on Aida’s breast, lips and tongue working in rhythm, while her fingers ventured elsewhere. Aida’s spine curved in response, her body lifting from the cushion in a graceful arc that left her exposed, presenting herself to him—heart-shaped curves glistening in the dim light, every intimate fold and entrance on display as she pressed back against Vivienne’s touch, unaware or uncaring of his unobstructed view across the room. Vivienne’s finger disappeared, then reappeared, glistening in the dim light. Aida’s hips rose to meet each thrust, her breath catching in her throat, her eyes half-closed in surrender.

Mei-Lin shifted position, moving behind Vivienne and lowering her face between her thighs. She began to explore with her tongue—tentative circles that gradually quickened into determined strokes. Vivienne responded, rocking against Mei-Lin’s mouth while her fingers continued their rhythm inside Aida, never breaking their connection.

Then Vivienne’s exploring touch ventured further, finding a new threshold.

She traced the sensitive ring with deliberate care, her movements both question and invitation.

Aida’s lips parted against Vivienne’s skin, a sound of surrender escaping.

The barrier yielded gradually to Vivienne’s patient persistence, the tight ring of muscle relaxing millimeter by millimeter around her slender finger. The initial resistance gave way to a silken heat that seemed to draw her deeper.

Vivienne’s lips found Aida’s ear. ”I’ve wanted this,” she whispered. ”Wanted to know you like this. All of you.” Aida’s only response was a moan as Vivienne’s finger slid deeper.

Aida’s body softened into the sensation, her spine arching like a bow being drawn. Between her parted thighs, that tight ring of muscle visibly pulsed around Vivienne’s skilled fingers, relaxing and contracting in a rhythm that seemed almost deliberate—an invitation written in the language of flesh. With each gentle stretch, the rosy entrance bloomed wider, glistening and ready, as if beckoning Zhao from across the table. Aida’s breath caught on a half-formed word that dissolved into a low, throaty moan.

Vivienne caught Zhao’s gaze. Her smile held secrets as her hand gathered her own essence before reaching toward him, painting his arousal with glistening intent.

He could still feel the pain beneath the pills as he unbuttoned his shirt, fingers fumbling with each small disc. The fabric slid from his shoulders, then his pants followed, pooling around his ankles. Standing naked, exposed, vulnerable—he didn’t care anymore.

He moved closer. His face found Aida’s ear. The air around them was thick with the scent of bodies in motion—salt and musk and something elemental that belonged only to these three women.

”I’m sorry,” he whispered. ”For making you wait.”

Vivienne gathered the slick evidence of her own arousal with her fingers, then wrapped them around Zhao’s length, coating him with deliberate strokes. Her eyes locked with his as she positioned him at Aida’s other entrance, the one that had just yielded to her careful preparation. With gentle pressure and a slight twist of her wrist, she guided him past that initial resistance.

They stayed like that for a moment—joined, connected, breathing together. Zhao’s forehead rested against Aida’s shoulder blade, her warmth seeping into his skin. The pain was still there, but distant now. Manageable.

Aida’s hand found his, squeezed.

”Zhao.”

He lifted his head.

”Look at us.”

He did. Aida beneath him, curved and open. Vivienne and Mei-Lin tangled together nearby, watching them with eyes that held no judgment, only want. Three women. His family. All of them waiting, wanting, choosing him.

The weight of it pressed against his chest—not crushing, but grounding. Real.

”I see you,” he whispered. ”All of you.”

Aida smiled. ”Good. Now come here. We’re not done with you yet.”

She reached back, guiding him deeper, and the moment of stillness dissolved back into motion—but different now. Lighter. Freer. The corner was truly behind him.

His movements began with cautious restraint. Each thrust measured, deliberate. Though his body still ached, the sensation had retreated to the periphery of his awareness. Aida’s throat vibrated with a sound of pure satisfaction, her tension visibly melting away.

Vivienne shifted position, bringing her lips to Aida’s waiting mouth. Their kiss consumed them both as Zhao established his rhythm. When they finally separated, Vivienne sought Mei-Lin next, their mouths meeting while Mei-Lin’s skilled fingers continued their intimate exploration, drawing visible tremors across Vivienne’s skin.

Vivienne arched her back, lifting herself until her lips found her own nipple, drawing it between her teeth with a soft moan.

Mei-Lin’s eyes widened before she leaned forward, her tongue joining Vivienne’s in a delicate dance around the sensitive flesh, their mouths nearly touching as they shared this intimate communion.

The pain that had been his constant companion began to recede—whether from the medication coursing through his system, the rush of endorphins, or simply the overwhelming sensory experience before him, Zhao couldn’t tell.

His rhythm intensified.

His world contracted to this moment: Vivienne’s lips wrapped around her own nipple, Mei-Lin’s tongue tracing delicate patterns alongside, Aida’s body yielding and tightening around him in perfect counterpoint. Their collective scent filled his lungs—intimate, primal, intoxicating—while heat radiated between their bodies like a current, binding them together in something that transcended mere pleasure. This wasn’t just sex. This was belonging.

He came with a groan, emptying into Aida, feeling her tighten around him, hearing her cry out beneath Vivienne’s kiss.

They stayed like that for a moment—joined, connected, breathing together.

”I’m sorry,” he whispered again, voice breaking. ”For everything.”

Aida turned. Cupped his face. Shook her head gently.

”There’s nothing to forgive,” she whispered. ”You’re here now. That’s all that matters.”

She kissed him. Soft. Forgiving. Loving.

Then she moved to rejoin the others, finding Mei-Lin and Aida already focused on Vivienne, their heads close together in concentration. Aida’s finger found Vivienne’s entrance—that forbidden place even she had never explored. Vivienne tensed, then forced herself to breathe, to relax, to trust. This was different from being penetrated by Zhao. This was women’s hands, women’s knowledge, women’s patience. Aida moved slowly, reading her body’s responses with the same skill she’d used to read rooms full of strangers for twenty years. When Mei-Lin’s slick finger joined Aida’s, Vivienne gasped—not from pain, but from the sudden overwhelming intimacy of being so completely held. Two women she loved, working in perfect unison, preparing her for something she’d never dared want.

”Relax,” Aida murmured against Vivienne’s neck. ”We have you. We’re not going anywhere.” Mei-Lin added her own whisper from below: ”First time for everything, Captain.” Vivienne laughed—actually laughed—even as their fingers worked in perfect synchronization. Her body yielded not just to their fingers, but to the truth they represented: she was not alone. She would never be alone again.

Zhao positioned himself behind Vivienne, his palms cradling the soft weight of her breasts while his lips traced the curve where her neck met her shoulder. Below them, Mei-Lin’s fingers glistened as they prepared him with Vivienne’s natural wetness. Meanwhile, Aida lowered her mouth to Vivienne’s chest, drawing a nipple between her lips with tender devotion.

When he was ready, Mei-Lin guided him to Vivienne’s entrance—the one they had just prepared with such careful attention. As he pressed forward, Vivienne’s breath caught, her body tensing then yielding as he breached this final, intimate threshold. Her eyes widened, lips parting in a silent gasp that spoke of unfamiliar sensation—territory unexplored until this moment between them, unlike their desperate coupling that night on Verne’s boat. The vulnerability in her gaze told him everything: this crossing was deliberate, chosen, desired.

He moved slowly. Gently. Letting her adjust to the unfamiliar fullness.

Mei-Lin lowered her head between Vivienne’s legs, her tongue finding the sensitive bud, circling, teasing. She slid two fingers deep into Vivienne’s entrance, establishing a rhythm that matched Zhao’s careful thrusts—a counterpoint that made Vivienne gasp and arch between them.

Aida’s lips traced a path down Mei-Lin’s trembling form, each kiss leaving goosebumps in its wake. When she reached the silver-adorned bud between Mei-Lin’s thighs, her tongue circled the metal, drawing forth shudders that rippled through Mei-Lin’s entire body. Aida’s fingers found their way inside, filling both entrances with gentle insistence.

Despite Vivienne’s thighs pressed against her cheeks, Mei-Lin’s pleasure escaped as an unrestrained cry that echoed off the cabin walls.

Zhao’s rhythm intensified, his movements growing urgent as tension coiled tighter within him. Just as he approached the precipice, Vivienne’s fingers pressed firmly against his hip.

”Not yet,” she breathed. ”Mei-Lin. She needs it more.”

A silent understanding passed between them. He drew a steadying breath, regaining control.

Bodies shifted in the dim light. Vivienne eased away as Mei-Lin took her place beneath him. Her gaze met his—expectant, trusting, tinged with nervous anticipation.

”Go easy,” she whispered. ”It’s my first time too.”

Zhao bent close to Mei-Lin’s ear. ”Are you sure?” She nodded, eyes bright with tears that might have been joy. ”With all of you? I’ve never been more sure of anything.”

But before Zhao entered her, before they completed the circle, something made him pause.

He looked at Mei-Lin. Really looked. Her face was flushed, her eyes bright, her perpetual smile softened into something more vulnerable. This was her first time—here, like this, with all of them.

”Mei-Lin,” he said.

She met his eyes.

”Thank you. For being here. For being you.”

Her smile widened—real, unguarded, hers. ”Thank you for coming back to us.”

They kissed then, slow and tender, while Aida and Vivienne watched. When they broke apart, Mei-Lin nodded. Ready.

Aida’s hand wrapped around him, slick with the combined essence of all three women. But before she guided him to Mei-Lin, she paused. Looked at Mei-Lin. Silent question. Mei-Lin met her eyes and nodded—once, small, certain. Yes. I want this. I trust you. Only then did Aida guide him to that tight, untouched entrance, her fingers gentle on his shaft, her eyes never leaving Mei-Lin’s face. The trust in that moment—between all three of them—was more intimate than any penetration could be.

The circle was complete.

His movements were tender, careful, honoring her request.

Mei-Lin’s expression transformed with each gentle thrust—eyelids fluttering, mouth slightly open, shallow breaths punctuating the silence between them. Every inch of her seemed to yield and tighten in perfect rhythm, drawing him deeper with each subtle shift of her hips.

His palm curved around the fullness of her breast. With the gentlest pressure from his fingers, fine streams erupted—pearlescent droplets catching the dim light as they landed on Aida and Vivienne’s skin.

Aida’s tongue traced the moisture from Vivienne’s cheek with delicate precision. Vivienne mirrored her, their lips meeting in a slow exchange of sweetness while Mei-Lin’s body continued its natural release, baptizing them in its nurturing essence.

Vivienne’s hands found Aida’s face, thumbs tracing her cheekbones. In the silence between heartbeats, their gazes met and held—a wordless conversation flowing between them that needed no translation, yet contained volumes: past hurts forgiven, future promises made, present boundaries dissolved.

As he maintained his rhythm within Mei-Lin’s warmth, Zhao observed the women before him with quiet contemplation.

What is it? Their agreement to share me? Aida’s final permission for Vivienne to be permanent? Or just... love? Finally, completely, between them?

He couldn’t know. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to.

But it looked like family. It looked like forever.

Vivienne’s mouth found Aida’s with newfound urgency, a claiming rather than a request. When Mei-Lin leaned in, they shifted naturally to include her, their limbs forming a living braid, lips passing whispered secrets between them.

Zhao felt something crystallize in his chest as he watched them.

This was no temporary arrangement. This was foundation.

The timing couldn’t have been more necessary.

His release came with a sound torn from deep in his chest—something primal that carried all the weight of what they’d become to each other. Through half-lidded eyes, he watched the three women still entwined in their intimate dance, their bodies forming a constellation he was only beginning to understand.

Lowering his head, he pressed his lips to the curve where Mei-Lin’s shoulder met her neck, tasting salt and sweetness as he drew in her scent.

Their mingled scents lingered in the air—the salt of perspiration, the musk of intimacy, the sweetness of Mei-Lin’s milk, and beneath it all, the distinct essence of each woman, combining into something he’d never encountered before.

Family, he thought. This is what family smells like.

He imprinted it in his memory. Held it close. Promised himself he’d never forget.

They collapsed onto the bed in a constellation of bare skin and soft murmurs. The blanket draped across their bodies like a tide, revealing shoulders here, covering thighs there. Fingers laced together while curves nestled against planes, creating a human puzzle of perfect fit.

Words floated between them—confessions whispered against earlobes, jokes muttered into collar bones, promises pressed against temples—creating ripples of laughter that dissolved into tears, then crystallized back into smiles.

With each shared breath, the weight of survival lightened. The constant vigilance evaporated like morning dew, leaving behind something sturdy in its place.

At the nucleus of this intimate galaxy, Zhao drifted in the gravity of three women who had deliberately chosen this arrangement—chosen him, chosen each other—awakening a sensation long dormant in his chest.

Pride.

Not the arrogant kind. Not the competitive kind. Just... pride. In them. In himself. In what they’d built together.

The pain was gone. Completely. He searched for it, poked at it mentally, and found nothing.

Maybe it’s the pills, he thought. Or maybe it’s this. Maybe pride in your family is the most potent painkiller of all.

He looked at the corner of the room—the place where he’d been hiding, retreating, surviving. It was still there. Still dark. Still inviting.

But he wasn’t in it anymore.

He was here. In the light. In the warmth. In the center of his family.

A smile curved his lips as consciousness slipped away like an ebbing tide.

Dawn would bring its demands. Dangers would still lurk beyond their sanctuary. The world would still be broken.

But here, in this tangle of limbs and shared breath, he had found something whole.

Something worth fighting for.
