Dawn Experiment

# Day 16 - 22:36

The alarm went off at the exact second Verne’s pulse flatlined. A square of red on the forward compartment’s monitor; a dozen more on wristbands, scattered through the mass of survivors. It was a domino effect—Verne’s vitals faded, and the crowd, already brittle, snapped. A single scream set it off; three more women doubled over, clutching their arms or ribs as the viral markers spiked.

The Dawn Meter above the control panel stuttered, then leaped: forty-five, fifty, fifty-five, the color shifting from blue to searing orange. Someone retched. Someone else screamed, “It’s happening! It’s fucking happening!” and the panic ricocheted through the pressure hull like a trapped animal.

Zhao saw it all from the middle compartment. Not the worst position, not the best. There were seventy four people wedged into the corridor, but every eye turned to the red pulses on the monitor, the name tags winking to red as bodies failed.

Mei-Lin clung to Zhao’s sleeve. “We need to help,” she whispered, but the word “we” sounded like a death sentence. He looked for Aida—found her on hands and knees, coaxing a pale kitchen worker to sip water, but the woman’s head lolled like her bones had melted.

There was no hope for order. The guards at the aft doors had been hand-picked from former athletes: hard, competent, but even they shrank from the volume of the crowd. Women pressed forward, a panicked tide. Sophie Laurent, somewhere at the front, raised her voice above the noise. “Attention! All medical and security: Move anyone with a Dawn Meter reading above fifty to the aft section! Quarantine is now. Move!”

Nobody moved at first. The chaos was too loud.

Zhao felt the moment of decision. He should help. He should lead. But how do you treat a seventy-four people in a corridor meant for twenty, every square centimeter stinking of sweat and pure animal fear? There was nothing to give. No equipment, no drugs. Not even hope.

He watched as two guards grabbed a woman who’d fainted, dragging her down the corridor. Another pair moved a cluster of three, one resisting and howling. The others followed, screaming, sobbing, a hundred voices mashed into a single, wordless plea. He saw Isabelle, hands shaking as she read her own wrist monitor—55, then 56—her face a mask of perfect, horrified control.

Zhao’s mouth filled with acid. He heard Aida’s voice, far away, “No! Don’t take her—she’s not a threat, she’s just scared!” But the guard’s hands were blunt and indifferent as they seized Isabelle next. ”Sophie, please,” she begged, voice cracking, her fingers clutching at the sleeve of Sophie’s immaculate white blouse. ”Nine years I’ve served as officer.” Sophie’s eyes flickered with recognition, then hardened as she checked Isabelle’s wristband. ”No exceptions,” she said, nodding to the guards. ”Thank you for your service.” Isabelle’s face crumpled with betrayal as they dragged her toward the aft section, her body going limp with shock.

Mei-Lin whispered, “This is wrong. This is—” but her voice snapped with the strain.

He saw Sophie at the front. She was untouched by the crowd, standing like a lighthouse in a storm. Two security stood at her side. She watched, expressionless, as the “infected” were marched or carried to the aft bulkhead. Some resisted. Some went limp. Zhao saw Dr. Iqbal and Saanvi, their arms loaded with the last of the medical kits, hustled through the chaos with a triage line already forming behind them.

It was the sound that finally did it. Not the screams, not the crying, but the simple, wet thunk as the ballast door closed and locked. It was the sound of history ending—at least for the thirty women now sealed in the aftmost section.

Aida made the sound first, a helpless, low moan that had nothing to do with pain and everything to do with loss. “We could have tried,” she said, to no one in particular.

Mei-Lin’s nails dug into Zhao’s hand. “We should go to them. Even if it’s just—”

He cut her off. “We’ll be locked in. We’ll die with them.”

She looked at him, eyes hollow. “Then at least we die as people.”

That was the hinge. The moment when something inside Zhao snapped, but not the way he expected. Not a break—more like a hard, calculated realignment. A split-second of perfect clarity. The corridor, the suffering, the hopelessness, and at the center, the vector of their new world, hiding behind a mask of utility.

He let go of Mei-Lin’s hand and stood.

He walked forward, toward the locked bulkhead.

Sophie intercepted him, a ghost from the past, flawless in white even here, even now. Her voice was a whipcrack: “Don’t be a fool. You know what’s back there. The infection will take them in hours. We have to keep the vector safe.” She flicked her eyes to his bare wrist, where everyone else wore their Dawn Meters. ”Your immunity isn’t just luck—it’s responsibility. Your blood belongs to the rest of them now.”

Zhao stared at her. “You’re just going to let them die alone?”

A flicker of something—contempt, maybe, or envy—ran across her face. “They’re already dead. You know that.”

He said nothing. He stepped to the side, but Sophie blocked him, her face set in elegant, implacable resolve.

She drew a sidearm from her waistband. Not a threat—more of a fact. “Stay here, Zhao. If you die, everyone dies.” Her hand was steady.

He stared at the gun, then at her, then at the endless tunnel of blue-lit faces, terrified, waiting for what he would do.

He stepped forward until the gun pressed to his forehead.

The crowd saw it. The guards saw it. Even Vivienne, ten meters down, saw it. Everything went perfectly silent.

Zhao spoke, low. “I’m not your property. I’m not anyone’s property. If there’s a new world, I’ll build it myself. Or I’ll die here.” He leaned into the gun, daring her.

Sophie’s finger flexed on the trigger.

He didn’t blink. “I’d rather die than live in your world.”

She hesitated, just long enough.

He swept her wrist with the heel of his hand, twisting the gun away, and she wasn’t as strong as he’d expected. Maybe she’d never been. The gun clattered to the floor. He kicked it aside, and, as a single, wordless challenge, he moved toward the aft door.

He looked back at Sophie, now two meters behind. Her lips trembled, then snapped into a thin line. He said, “You could have stopped me. Now you’ll have to watch.” Then he pressed the emergency open on the ballast door.

It hissed, unlocked, and he stepped inside.

Aida crossed the threshold first, her jaw set like iron. Mei-Lin followed a heartbeat later, trembling but resolute. Saanvi stepped through with surgical precision, her eyes never leaving Zhao’s back. Dr. Iqbal paused at the doorway, exhaled once, then committed herself to the same fate—each woman deliberate, each choice final.

The room inside was hell—heat, panic, the stench of viral breakdown, all of it mashed into an eight-meter space with bodies slumped or screaming on every inch of bench. Two guards inside tried to block Zhao’s way, but Iqbal caught one by the ear and drove her to the floor; Saanvi and Aida simply walked past, finding the nearest collapsed survivor.

Zhao set his jaw. “We’re here,” he said, voice loud enough to echo. “We’re not leaving.”

Behind, the corridor was full of faces, all pressed in, silent and watching. Even Vivienne, always cautious, stood at the threshold, her jaw shaking. She watched as Zhao knelt beside the next woman, held her hand, and whispered, “I’m here. I won’t let you die alone.”

A tremor went through the crowd. Not fear, but something new—a shift, as if the very air changed flavor.

Sophie, outside, tried to shout him down. “You’re killing them! You’re killing yourself!” But it sounded weak now, tinny, even as she raised her hands to signal the guards.

None of them moved. They just watched.

Sophie lunged forward, catching Vivienne’s wrist. ”Don’t throw your life away,” she hissed. ”You’re a Laurent.”

Vivienne wrenched free, her eyes never leaving Zhao’s.

”Not anymore,” she whispered, loud enough for everyone to hear.

”I’m a Zhao now. Not a Laurent. Not an asset. Not a spare part. A Zhao. Part of something. Part of them.” She stepped inside, chin high, shoulders back—the posture of royalty walking willingly to execution. The ballast door clanged shut behind her with the finality of a guillotine.

She walked up to Zhao. She looked at his hands—both covered in sweat, blood, and some unspeakable viral ooze.

She kissed his cheek, then stood next to him, facing Sophie through the porthole.

Sophie’s face was full of rage and something else—fear, maybe, or understanding.

Zhao smiled, not at Sophie, but at the thirty-odd women now crowded in the aft chamber, their faces alight with the wild hope of the truly damned.

He said, “If the world is ending, I’ll make a new one here. Even if it only lasts an hour.”

Vivienne’s voice, quiet but perfectly clear: “You’re not alone, Zhao. Not anymore.”

There was a moment when everyone—Aida, Saanvi, Iqbal, even the barely-conscious and the dying—knew what had happened: the rules had changed. The vector was no longer a resource. He was a person.

Outside, Sophie tried to unlock the ballast door, but Vivienne had already snapped the safety from inside. She watched her mother’s face through the porthole. For the first time, she saw it unmasked—raw, animal terror at losing control.

Vivienne whispered, “You can’t hurt us anymore.” Then, with deliberate calm, she took off her shirt, baring herself to the crowd, and began to tend the wounded alongside the others.

Aida followed, then Mei-Lin, then half the room, until the whole chamber pulsed with life—naked, vulnerable, unbroken.

Sophie beat on the door, but no one listened.

Inside, Zhao took a deep breath and let the new world begin.
