Daily Intelligence System: Don't Kill Me, Honey!

Chapter 695: Chapter 199 Chen Jiusi, Don’t Be Ungrateful_2

The rain, a gentle rain continued incessantly for ten full days and nights. After ten days and nights, the Mianshui River surged uncontrollably, directly destroying downstream villages.

In an instant, an entire village and all its people were swept away by the floodwaters.

Back then, he had taken refuge in Mianshui County, which, elevated in its terrain, had never been destroyed, even by the most severe floods. Yet, the sight of drowned bodies brought in daily left a profound impression on him.

Who could have imagined such disasters would occur every thirty years?

Would they really have to relive the events from thirty years ago?

With that thought in mind, Liu Yishou said, ”Gang Leader, we must carry out disaster relief!”

Chen Jie replied, ”Yes, I am aware we need to provide relief.”

Liu Yishou added, ”This relief effort is not only a struggle against nature but also against man.”

Upon hearing this, Chen Jie replied, ”Yes, I understand. Elder Liu, please take a seat.”

Chen Jie calmed the agitated Liu Yishou and quickly followed up with, ”Chen Heng, the map.”

Chen Heng swiftly brought over a map detailing Mianshui County and the surrounding villages, which had been meticulously surveyed by the Fishing Guild, offering a clear understanding of the area around Mianshui County.

Then, Chen Jie said, ”Elder Liu, take a look and see if you can remember the places in Mianshui County that weren’t submerged before.”

At this point, Liu Yishou stood up, examined the map, his brow furrowed slightly as he fell into deep thought.

Shortly after, Liu Yishou said, ”These, these, these areas weren’t flooded, and neither were these, these, these...”

Liu Yishou circled various locations on the map and then said, ”Gang Leader, these are all the places I can remember.”

Chen Jie looked around and saw these places. Indeed, human memory was remarkable, pointing out spots that were old villages.

Many of the houses in these areas were old, some having weathered the previous major floods without damage.

Hence, there was reason why some old buildings could be preserved.

Chen Jie took a look, and then he realized the unfortunate truth about Xiantao Village’s location, situated directly downstream of the river. If the river breached its banks, there was no question that Xiantao Village would bear the brunt.

Considering this, Chen Jie took a deep breath.

Xiantao Village was his birthplace, after all.

At this time, Wu Zhong also approached the map and, with a troubled expression, said, ”This, this...”

He hadn’t anticipated Xiantao Village to be within the destruction zone of the current flood. Thinking about it, Wu Zhong pointed at the map and said, ”Xiantao, Xia Tao, these are low-lying areas, and once the flood hits, they’ll be the first to get hit, turning them into a vast ocean!”

Upon hearing this, both Chen Heng and Chen Wang gathered around. They too were from Xiantao Village and their families lived there.

Zhou Chu also joined the group, eyeing Xia Tao Village’s geographical position, and after careful examination, said, ”Uncle Zhong, don’t panic. Look, if we block this tributary, the water won’t enter our Xiantao Village.”

Chen Jie responded, ”Zhou Chu, if we block it and the flood comes, then the neighboring villages would be completely destroyed. Not just one village, but this entire area, three villages, and thousands of people, would be directly swept away by the floodwaters—thousands of people, over a thousand households.”

Hearing this, Zhou Chu looked at Chen Jie and said, ”Gang Leader, pardon my bluntness, but those three villages aren’t our Fishing Guild’s territory. Elder Liu isn’t concerned, so why should we care?”

”And here, Xiantao Village, that’s your home, Uncle Zhong’s home, Ah Tun’s and Wang’s home, Hu Zi’s home, it’s even half my home too. There are too many memories here; I don’t want to see it so easily destroyed.”

After Zhou Chu finished speaking, Chen Jie fell silent.

Indeed, compared to those villages of which Chen Jie had no memory, Xiantao Village held too many of his own.

To this day, his first small home with Su Yunjin stood there, Uncle Zhong’s too, and even within his White Tiger Camp, there were hundreds of people from Xiantao Village; all their homes were there. If a great flood were to destroy that place, Chen Jie went silent.

The others fell silent as well.

Finally, Chen Jie broke the quiet, ”Let’s put this matter aside for now. I will think about it further. Now, I will issue the guild leader’s order!”

Upon hearing this, everyone looked expectantly at Chen Jie with grave expressions.

Chen Jie said, ”Si Xi.”

”Here,” came the reply.

”Prepare to stock up on food, clean drinking water, and disaster relief supplies. We must use these ten days to get ready. I’ve already arranged for Elder Liu to help us gather food. You just need to ensure we’re ready to receive the supplies.”

”Yes, Gang Leader.”

Si Xi immediately bowed in response and set out to arrange for the logistical work such as procuring supplies.

Chen Jie paused for a moment then continued, ”Zhou Chu!”

”Here,” came the quick reply.

Chen Jie looked at Zhou Chu and said, ”Send someone immediately to guard the embankments along the Mianshui River. Deploy our River Patrol Disciples to monitor, and if the water level rises dangerously, report back immediately.”

”Understood,” responded Zhou Chu.

Chen Jie then turned to Liu Yishou and said, ”Elder Liu, after a great disaster, a plague often follows. We will need a large stockpile of anti-epidemic medicinal materials. You will be responsible for this area, with Chen Wang assisting you.”

”Understood,” replied Chen Wang.

”Good, I got it,” affirmed Liu Yishou.

Lastly, Chen Jie looked at Wu Zhong and said, ”I’m going to have to trouble you once more. You should head back to the village and have the brothers from the fishery keep a close watch on the river’s movements. Moreover, mobilize everyone to prepare for the event we must leave the village.”

Taken aback, Wu Zhong looked at Chen Jie before silently nodding in acknowledgment, ”I understand.”

Zhou Chu wanted to speak up, but Si Xi stopped him.

Chen Jie concluded, ”All right, everyone, go about your tasks. Feel free to use the Silver Coin from the treasury for expenses; Si Xi, ensure you keep a proper tally.”
