Chapter 689: Chapter 198 Garrison Commander: My Lord, Lord of the Commandery!_2

Upon hearing this, everyone looked over unanimously, and then they saw Garrison Commander Ba Tan.

Ba Tan sat astride his horse, looking down at Yelu with eyes full of provocation.

Yelu saw Ba Tan and his gaze became slightly fixed as he thought to himself, How come he has come to Mianshui?

Still, he respectfully greeted with a fist and palm salute, ”I have seen the Lord Governor.”

The garrison commander’s office was the military unit deployed by Daqian in each State Mansion, commanding two thousand elite cavalry and responsible for suppressing rebellions in the region.

Its chief administrative officer, the Garrison Commander, held the rank of Standard Sixth Rank, just below the Secondary Fifth Rank Magistrate of Huangzhou Prefecture, and at the same level as the Prefecture Deputy Judge.

Therefore, Ba Tan’s official rank was one level higher than Yelu’s.

Ba Tan glanced at Yelu and said, ”Lord Yelu, you are courteous.”

Then he scanned the audience and asked, ”What’s this lively event about? What are you celebrating?”

Upon hearing this, Yelu replied, ”It is the inauguration ceremony of the new Gang Leader of the Fishing Guild.”

”Heh, such an extravagant event for the leader of the mere Fishing Guild. How arrogant indeed. One would think he inherited the position of Gang Leader by succession.”

As Ba Tan spoke, he scanned the crowd and asked, ”Who is this new leader of the Fishing Guild?”

Chen Jie, hearing this and seeing Ba Tan’s disdainful demeanor, knew that this was a provocation. So, he stepped forward with a fist and palm salute and said, ”Lord Governor, I am the newly-appointed Gang Leader of the Fishing Guild, Chen Jiusi!”

Chen Jie saluted, neither humbly nor arrogantly. Ba Tan looked over with a smile on his face and said, ”Hahaha... So, you are the shameless scoundrel who framed your own Gang Leader and coveted his position!”

Chen Jie frowned slightly, and so did the people around him.

It was clear that the Garrison Commander was here to pick a fight.

Chen Jie, maintaining his composure, said, ”Lord Governor, you must have been misled by Nan Batian. He colluded with the Zoroastrian Sect, plotting rebellion. Lord Yelu has issued a full city manhunt. I am assuming the role of Gang Leader in times of crisis. How have I become a shameless scoundrel just from your words?”

”How audacious! A lowly Han person dares to talk back to an official? I think you are the one secretly communicating with the Zoroastrian Sect, preparing for a rebellion!”

Ba Tan looked down at Chen Jie with utter contempt; a Han person daring to oppose us Mulan people is truly courting death.

Chen Jie replied with a fist and palm salute, ”Lord, everything must be supported by evidence. Though you are the Garrison Commander, you cannot falsely accuse people without proof.”

Ba Tan laughed upon hearing this, ”I falsely accuse you? Heh, Yelu, I ask you, what evidence do you have to claim that Nan Batian colluded with the Zoroastrian Sect?”

Yelu immediately saluted and said, ”Lord, there is evidence. First, we found a letter proving Nan Batian’s collusion with Sun Tiechui, a demon of the Zoroastrian Sect. The evidence is conclusive. Moreover, a large number of military arms were also discovered. All of these are evidence.”

Ba Tan frowned and looked at Yelu, ”I have a feeling that this letter is a framing by this thief against Nan Batian. And those large quantities of military arms, those were made by Nan Batian at my request for the garrison commander’s office.”

Yelu furrowed his brow and replied, ”Lord, the letter was written in his own hand. As for the arms, the garrison commander’s office always sources its military equipment from within the prefecture. How could there be a separate purchase from the Fishing Guild?”

”Oh, does a Garrison Commander like me need to report to a mere County Daru Hua Chi when buying some military arms?”

Ba Tan glanced at Yelu. Despite being part of the Yelu family, you have no room to bargain in front of me.

Yelu fell silent.

Ba Tan continued, ”I should clarify here, Nan Batian is an undercover agent for my garrison commander’s office. Even if he has connections with the Zoroastrian Sect, that would be for infiltrating and gathering intelligence.”

Upon hearing this, everyone exchanged glances with each other.

This was a blatant whitewash, but nobody could refute it; the authority of the Mulan people was unquestionable.

Yelu frowned slightly and looked at Chen Jie, only to see Chen Jie calmly composed.

Because Chen Jie understood that the game rules of the Mulan people were based on the dominance of the strong.

The Mulan people still used a system of semi-slavery and semi-feudalism, meaning the strong had absolute control, which meant in this game, if you found a stronger backer, you could disregard a lot of evidence.

Just like Ba Tan, who could stand with his brows crossed and declare that Nan Batian was innocent, even if he had contacts with the Zoroastrian Sect, it was for the sake of intelligence gathering!

This was almost blatant cheating, but no one could challenge it.

The crowd watched Ba Tan in angry silence, while Ba Tan faced them and said, ”So, the situation is clear now. Nan Batian isn’t colluding with the Zoroastrian Sect; he is my spy. Thus, your so-called evidence is nothing but a joke.”

”But still, using this evidence, you have deposed the Gang Leader who is my undercover agent, Yelu.”

Ba Tan looked towards Yelu, who now raised his head to meet Ba Tan’s gaze. Ba Tan said, ”I will not pursue your negligence, but people like Chen Jiusi, who framed the Gang Leader and craved power by any means, the shameless sort, I will not forgive. Seize this traitor!”

”Yes!”

With a wave of his hand, Ba Tan immediately ordered his men to arrest Chen Jie.

Witnessing Ba Tan’s brazenness, Chen Xiaohu, Zhou Chu, and these brothers from the Fishing Guild could not hold back. They shouted, ”Who dares to touch our Gang Leader!”

Ba Tan’s brows wrinkled: ”Oh, you dare gather and resist the court. Very well, seize them all! I suspect these people are the demon followers of the Zoroastrian Sect, arrest all of them, leave none behind.”

”How dare you!”

Xiao Hu shouted furiously, drawing his sword, and the Fishing Guild Disciples around him also drew their blades, ready to confront Ba Tan and his men.

Seeing their response, Ba Tan proclaimed, ”Good, see that? They have drawn their swords; this is an outright rebellion. Men, put down the rebels! Show no mercy!”
