Daily Intelligence System: Don't Kill Me, Honey!

The onlookers had left, and now only a few people were left. Among them, one appeared to be elderly. Chen Jie knew him; he was called Chen Erba, an elder of his own clan.

He had a slight disability in his leg and usually made a living by weaving bamboo baskets.

By seniority, he was supposed to call him Uncle Erba.

The Daqian was an empire established by an external ethnic group, therefore implementing a policy of enslavement over the local populace. One key aspect of this policy was that Han people were not allowed to have their own names, and they had to use numbers instead, much like livestock identification numbers.

For instance, Chen Jie’s original name was Chen Jiusi.

Uncle Erba leaned on a cane, his legs and feet not very nimble, as he approached Jiu Si and said, ”Jiu Si, you were too impulsive. It’s not like when your paternal uncle was alive. Now that you’ve hit Lu San’s wife, given Lu San’s temperament, he will undoubtedly come looking for trouble with you.”

”That Lu San is big and strong, and also close to the Fishing Guild. If you provoke him, you won’t have an easy time.”

Chen Jie pondered briefly after hearing this and said, ”Hmm, I understand, Uncle Erba.”

Uncle Erba heard this and said, ”Hmm, as long as you understand. As for today’s matter, I’ll find a way to keep Lu San from troubling you.”

After saying this, Uncle Erba patted Chen Jie on the shoulder and said, ”You, just take care and stop gambling. Live well with Yunjin.”

Then he limped away.

After Uncle Erba left, the few remaining people also gradually departed, but they all remarked that Chen Jie was too impulsive today. If he had provoked Lu San, there would be no good days ahead. Everyone in the village knew how difficult Lu San was to deal with.

Once everyone was gone, Chen Jie looked at Su Yunjin, who stood dazedly, and when their eyes met, there was a bit of awkwardness.

Chen Jie broke the awkward silence first, saying, ”Are you okay?”

Su Yunjin replied, ”No, I’m fine.”

Chen Jie said, ”That’s good.”

He then went into the house, saw Ruirui, who was holding a basket of wild vegetables and watching him cautiously, and ignored her as he went about finding a clay pot.

He fetched a bucket of water from the well in the courtyard and began to skin and clean the rabbit.

His actions were quite skilled.

Su Yunjin, on the other hand, stood dumbfounded in the courtyard. Chen Jie’s handling of the situation today completely exceeded her expectations. She initially thought she would be thoroughly humiliated by Lu Qinsi, but unexpectedly, her husband stood up for her forcefully. There was no denying it, the feeling of being protected was quite heartwarming.

”Well, Yunjin, why don’t you heat up the pot? Do we have soybean oil or canola oil at home? Find it, we’ll have braised rabbit today.”

Upon hearing this, Su Yunjin was taken aback. She then saw Chen Jie dealing with the rabbit. After being stunned for a moment, she walked up to Chen Jie and said, ”That, after hitting Lu San’s wife today, won’t you run into trouble?”

Jie Wenyan was also stunned for a moment, then looked up at Su Yunjin. Being stared at by Chen Jie, Su Yunjin felt a bit uneasy and touched her face, thinking there might be something on it.

Only then did Chen Jie speak, ”No trouble, just a bully who picks on the weak.”

Chen Jie genuinely wasn’t afraid of any so-called Lu San. In his original memories, Lu San hadn’t practiced any Kung Fu; he only relied on his size to intimidate Chen Jiusi.

But Chen Jie wasn’t afraid of these things at all. Before he crossed over, he had watched over a battlefield, frequently getting into fights, and had a lot of fighting experience. Most critically, he had the fortunate opportunity to learn some self-defense from Chen Hegao for a few days.

This allowed him to have profound expertise in this kind of unstructured fighting.

Therefore, he didn’t take Lu San’s supposed retaliation seriously. If it had been a martial arts practitioner, he might have had to consider other methods.

Like finding a dump truck to run over the person while they were looking for trouble.

Of course, there were no dump trucks in this world. Maybe he could design a rolling stone trap, or even poison the opponent...

As long as he thought about it, there would always be a way.

But Lu San wasn’t needed.

While saying this, Chen Jie continued to skin the rabbit and remove the internal organs, ignoring Su Yunjin.

Su Yunjin saw that Chen Jie was ignoring her, hesitated for a moment, and then also returned to the house to clean the wild vegetables she had dug up today.

Su Yunrui, on the other hand, was still somewhat afraid of Chen Jie, keeping her distance.

She merely watched curiously as Chen Jie skinned the rabbit.

She thought, ”The rabbit looks delicious!”

However, she didn’t dare to get closer, having been really scared by Chen Jie.

Thus, the entire courtyard fell into silence.

Meanwhile, at Uncle Erba’s house not far away, he returned, supporting himself with his cane.

He was met by an elderly woman with a weathered face. She looked at Uncle Erba and said, ”Your legs aren’t good, yet you still wander around. Aren’t you going to weave today’s baskets and leave the work to Hu Zi alone?”

Hearing this, Uncle Erba replied, ”There was a big commotion at Jiu Si’s house. I thought I’d go take a look. Our paternal uncle did us a favor, can’t ignore it.”

”Ignore, ignore, Jiu Si that damn gambler lost all of our uncle’s substantial estate, your little body couldn’t even squeeze out a few taels, can you fill that endless pit?”

Uncle Erba sighed and said, while the woman sighed too, ”Only pity poor Yunjin. By the way, did that shrew from Lu San Family make things difficult for Yunjin?”

Uncle Erba said, ”Made it difficult, but I was planning to intervene. However, Jiu Si returned.”

”Ah, that damned thing, again siding with outsiders to bully Yunjin?”

The old woman glared as she spoke.

Uncle Erba said, ”No, Jiu Si helped Yunjin beat that shrew!”

”What!”

The woman opened her eyes wide in shock, then exclaimed, ”Has that damned person changed his nature?”

Uncle Erba said, ”Seems like he changed somewhat.”

The woman followed with, ”Not good, that Lu San couple, a bully and a shrew, Jiu Si provoked those two, he’ll be in deep trouble, won’t he?”

Uncle Erba frowned with concern and said, ”Dear, you fetch the fifty cents from the house.”

”Ah, what do you need the money for?”

Uncle Erba looked at the woman and said, ”If I tell you to get it, just get it.”

”No, this money is saved for Hu Zi’s future bride. I can’t give it to you.”

”Oh, you spendthrift woman, you don’t listen to me anymore, bring it out.”

Uncle Erba suddenly shouted in anger, his expression very stern. Despite having a slight disability, when he really got angry, even Aunt Erba dared not oppose him.

Uncle Erba then leaned on his cane and walked to the courtyard, where he saw a seventeen or eighteen-year-old young man skillfully using a small knife to trim the branches off vine strips as he weaved a basket.

”Hu Zi, go fetch five pounds of sorghum rice and take it to your brother Jiu Si. They’re out of food.”

”Oh, okay, Dad.”

The young man stood up, as the sunlight shone on his bronze skin, making him look very robust; a result of weaving baskets shirtless for a long time.

The young man got up and entered the house, only to hear the woman’s curses from inside.

”More food! This life isn’t worth living. You two-hearted fools, just use this money and food to fill that bottomless pit...”

Listening to the woman’s curses from inside the house, Uncle Erba sat down at the spot he wove baskets, picked up a vine, and began weaving, muttering, ”We can’t just let it go...”
