Daily Intelligence System: Don't Kill Me, Honey!

”[System binding complete.]”

Listening to the voice next to his ear, a transparent panel appeared in front of him.

”[Daily intelligence updated (Level 1).]”

”[1. You gambled dice at Yu’s Treasure House yesterday and gained intelligence: Yu’s Treasure House’s dice are infused with mercury, allowing them to manipulate the numbers at will.]”

”[2. You passed by the back mountain yesterday and gained intelligence: This morning, a rabbit hit and died under a locust tree in Black Bear Gully.]”

”[3. You met with Lai San yesterday and gained intelligence: Yu’s Treasure House Young Master, Yu Sanliu, has taken a fancy to your wife, and is discussing with Ma Liu about tricking you into the gambling house to win over Su Yunjin.]”

”[4. You saw Su Yunrui today and gained intelligence: Su Yunrui is very afraid of you; she had a nightmare last night of you hitting her sister, but she didn’t dare to cry aloud.]”

”[5. You saw Su Yunjin today and gained intelligence: Su Yunjin has birthed the resolve to die; three days ago, she exchanged her mother’s heirloom hairpin for a packet of arsenic and a pound of rice.]”

Looking at the transparent panel in front of him, Chen Jie swallowed his saliva.

Raising his head, he looked at Su Yunjin, who was looking at him. To his surprise, Su Yunjin’s eyes started to dodge, not daring to meet his gaze.

Arsenic!

Chen Jie thought of the arsenic mentioned in the last piece of intelligence.

*Could this arsenic be in this bowl of porridge?*

Chen Jie slowly put down the porridge bowl, then looked at Su Yunjin and said, ”Wife, I remember we couldn’t even afford millet at home. Where did this rice come from?”

Su Yunjin paused slightly at his words.

”I, I pawned my hairpin. You’re right, we can’t afford to eat at home, so what’s the use of keeping that worthless hairpin...,”

Su Yunjin lowered her head and said, with her expression unreadable.

Chen Jie recalled that, in a fit of desperate gambling, he once had designs on Su Yunjin’s hairpin. But back then, Su Yunjin would rather endure a beating than give it to him, because it was the only keepsake her mother left her.

And now she had actually pawned it for arsenic. *How desperate must she have been to do such a thing!*

Chen Jie heard this and continued, ”This hairpin, did you just exchange it for this little rice? Didn’t you get anything else?”

Su Yunjin’s expression stiffened, and she said anxiously, ”No, nothing else.”

”Really? I seem to have heard that you also bought a packet of arsenic?”

”Wife, you didn’t put poison in this porridge, did you?”

Boom!

Chen Jie’s words exploded in Su Yunjin’s mind. *How did he know!*

No, that’s impossible!

Su Yunjin’s body began to tremble slightly, a sign of extreme fear. Seeing Su Yunjin like this, Chen Jie confirmed that the porridge really was poisoned!

As Chen Jie thought this, he suddenly saw Su Yunjin abruptly lift her head, her eyes full of despair.

Her plan had failed, and so easily, at that.

She had no retreat left!

Yesterday, Chen Jie lost the family’s last three acres of good land. It was the family’s last hope. Later, he even considered selling his own sister into a brothel. What kind of place was that? Once his sister entered, her life would be ruined forever.

*Marrying Chen Jiusi, this beast, had already ruined her life, but she didn’t want her sister’s life to be ruined, too.*

*Her life was over, but her sister was still young and should have had a beautiful future.*

*She couldn’t let this scum ruin her sister’s life.*

But she couldn’t defeat this scum, nor escape his control. *She couldn’t just watch as Chen Jie destroyed her sister.*

So she thought of the arsenic she bought, which was originally for herself, but now she wanted to poison this scum first.

But now everything was exposed, and her life was once again cast into darkness.

She could only imagine that what awaited her would be another brutal beating from Chen Jie. *He might even beat her to death,* and as for Ruirui, she feared she would be sold into a brothel to live as a plaything, as lowly as a dog.

No, no!

A hint of madness suddenly appeared in Su Yunjin’s eyes, and she quickly grabbed the bowl of white porridge beside Chen Jie, yelling, ”Ruirui, eat the porridge!”

With that, she opened her mouth, attempting to eat the porridge herself.

Since she couldn’t poison this beast, she would poison herself. *She had had enough of such a life and didn’t want to live anymore.*

*Perhaps after death, there would be no more beatings, no more curses.*

Hearing Su Yunjin’s words, Su Yunrui looked at Chen Jie in horror, reaching for the spoon inside the clay pot.

Seeing this, Chen Jie roared angrily, ”Put it down, don’t eat it!”

Then he knocked the porridge bowl out of Su Yunjin’s hand. Su Yunjin was shocked, and at this moment, Chen Jie lunged at Su Yunrui, who was about to take a large spoonful of porridge and put it in her mouth.

Chen Jie was shocked. If she ate it, she’d die on the spot.

Su Yunjin looked at the shattered porridge bowl on the ground and went mad instantly. *I live, you beat me; I try to die, and you don’t allow it. What do you want?*

Seeing Chen Jie stop Su Yunrui from eating the porridge, she didn’t know where the strength came from but charged at Chen Jie, wrapping her arms around him, shouting, ”Ruirui, eat, hurry up!”

Tears welled up in her eyes and flowed down uncontrollably.

She absolutely couldn’t watch her sister being sold into a brothel. *If worse came to worst, she’d rather her sister die!*

*Death would be good. Death would allow her to escape this filthy world, away from this devil.*

”Ruirui, eat, hurry up!”

Su Yunjin crazedly embraced Chen Jie, who was also panicking, and shouted at little Daisy, ”Don’t eat it, put down the spoon!”

”Chen Jiusi, what exactly do you want!”

Su Yunjin could no longer hold it in and shouted at Chen Jie.

Chen Jie was stunned by her shout, and Su Yunjin cried hysterically, ”What do you want us to do, what do you want, I beg you, let us die, let us die!”

”Let us die! Boohoo...”

Su Yunjin sat on the ground, collapsing into sobs, and Chen Jie was also frozen. He didn’t know how to respond.

Little Daisy looked at her crying sister, then at her own spoon, and with a loud wail, dropped the spoon, crying, ”Waaah, brother-in-law, Ruirui won’t eat it, please don’t hit my sister, don’t hit my sister, Ruirui will listen to you, Ruirui will listen to anything you say, boohoo...”

For a moment, the entire house was filled with cries. As Chen Jie listened to the sounds of crying around him, a sense of pity welled up in his heart.

*Look at what they’ve been driven to.*

”Sigh~”

Chen Jie sighed inwardly. This matter was set in motion by his predecessor. He had now taken his place, and to resolve it would rely solely on himself. *Only the one who tied the knot could untie it.*

Thinking this, Chen Jie lowered his head and looked at Su Yunjin, who was sitting on the ground crying her heart out. This woman, once gently charming and educated, had been tormented by his predecessor so much that she had already shed a layer of skin.

*His predecessor truly deserved to die!*

With a thought in mind, Chen Jie sighed and decided to comfort this woman.

Not for any other reason but the pity he felt in his heart…

He reached out to caress her hair, meeting her puzzled gaze, and said, ”Don’t cry anymore!”
