My Alleged Husband

Chapter 43: Chapter 43 Making Trouble_1

Zhang Zhentian dropped Xia Jing back at her place and prepared her a meal at her home. It wasn’t until late into the night that he reluctantly left her house and returned to the Zhang Family.

”Xia Jing, then, then I’ll be going now, I’ll come see you again tomorrow,” Zhang Zhentian said, holding onto Xia Jing’s hand, unwilling to let go, his voice soft and gentle.

Xia Jing looked at Zhang Zhentian like this and felt a great happiness in her heart. She hugged Zhang Zhentian and whispered in his ear, ”Okay, see you tomorrow.”

Even with those short four words, Zhang Zhentian was so happy he couldn’t stop grinning. He laughed and replied, ”Mm!”

As Zhang Zhentian turned to leave, he couldn’t help but keep looking back. Xia Jing, seeing him like this, felt a stir in her heart: ”Am I really being too harsh? If I trust him a bit more, would he stop behaving like this? Seeing him like this really pains me. But if I don’t do this, how would he ever realize that I’m the only one for him, and if he loses me, he can’t ever replace me? Zhentian, don’t blame me, I truly love you and want to be with you forever and ever...”

With a sigh, Xia Jing talked to herself, completely unaware that someone had overheard her words.

She looked in the direction where Zhang Zhentian had disappeared, and when she could no longer see his figure, she turned and went inside. The moment she entered the door, a shadow quietly emerged from behind a tree.

This shadow was none other than Zhang Zhentian. He hadn’t really left; as he’d turned the corner on the road, he had hidden behind a tree. He didn’t come out until Xia Jing turned to go inside, and then he slowly emerged.

”My dear Xia Jing, do you know how much your distrust hurts me? I don’t have any other demands; I just hope to be by your side for a lifetime, through thick and thin. I wish you would listen to me more. I know I’m important in your heart, but aren’t you just as important in mine? Perhaps you don’t realize that you’re even more important to me than my own kin, and yet you still treat me...” Upon hearing Xia Jing’s murmured words, Zhang Zhentian knew what she was worried about and what she was thinking, but he still couldn’t help feeling a bit upset.

Once Zhang Zhentian got home, Old Master Zhang called for him.

”Zhentian, tell me, how are things with Xia Jing?” Old Master Zhang asked.

”Dad, everything’s fine with Xia Jing now, you don’t need to worry. You should go to bed early!” said Zhang Zhentian, intending to head upstairs. But before his foot touched the stair, the phone in the living room rang.

”Hello, whom are you looking for?” Zhang Zhentian went to answer the phone, politely inquiring.

”Xiao Tian Tian, you’re back, huh?” As soon as Zhang Zhentian heard that coquettish voice of Li Jiayuan on the phone, he panicked and hung up.

Patting his chest, he said to Old Master Zhang, ”Oh my god, that scared the life out of me! What is wrong with this woman?”

Seeing Zhang Zhentian’s reaction, Old Master Zhang felt a bit curious and asked, ”Zhentian, what’s wrong? What happened? Who was that on the phone just now?”

Old Master Zhang bombarded him with a series of questions. Zhang Zhentian didn’t know how to respond to his dad. He could only tell his father, ”Dad, let’s not talk about it. If someone else calls later, just say I’m not here. But if it’s Xia Jing, you must tell me. I’m going upstairs now. Whew~”

After speaking to Old Master Zhang, Zhang Zhentian turned and headed upstairs. He was still trembling inside, intending to take his time getting to the upper floor. But no sooner had he taken a few steps than the phone in the living room rang again. Without a word, he started running upstairs, almost tumbling over himself. Old Master Zhang found this even more odd. He couldn’t understand what could scare Zhang Zhentian so badly. As the phone continued to ring, Old Master Zhang picked it up without a second thought. Before he could speak, Li Jiayuan’s coquettish voice came through the receiver.

”Brother Tian, what are you doing? Why did you hang up on me?” Li Jiayuan, unaware that it wasn’t Zhang Zhentian who answered, continued in her affected tone. Old Master Zhang couldn’t bear it anymore and promptly hung up the phone, finally understanding why his son had been so frightened—Li Jiayuan’s voice had startled him greatly too.

Old Master Zhang was incredulous: Was this really the daughter of the cunning and shrewd Li Haixiao? How could she have become like this? Could it be that the Li Corporation has encountered some major trouble? Li Jiayuan scared even me; what more my foolish son? Alas!

After such a scare from Li Jiayuan, Old Master Zhang decided he would not answer the phone tonight, no matter who it was. He did not want to be frightened again.

But Old Master Zhang had no way of knowing that the person who would call next wasn’t Li Jiayuan, but Xia Jing. He had been afraid of missing a call from Li Jiayuan, but this inadvertently caused Xia Jing a sleepless night.

Ring ring... Ring ring...

The sound of the telephone rang repeatedly, but Old Master Zhang just sat there, not answering. Annoyed by the incessant ringing, he said to Aunt Xu, ”Aunt Xu, tonight, no matter how much the phone rings, don’t answer it, understand?”

Aunt Xu didn’t quite grasp why Old Master Zhang would say such a thing. She asked, ”Old Master, how can we not answer when someone calls?”

Old Master Zhang wasn’t sure how to explain it to Aunt Xu, so he told her, ”You don’t need to worry about it too much, just remember what I’ve told you.”

Seeing Old Master Zhang’s serious expression, Aunt Xu kept quiet, and after giving her a glance, Old Master Zhang went upstairs.

Xia Jing had made more than a dozen calls to Zhang Zhentian’s home phone, with no one answering. She thought Zhang Zhentian might still be busy, so she decided to wait a little longer before calling him again.

Unfortunately, Xia Jing was unaware that her delayed call led Zhang Zhentian to mistake it as one from Li Jiayuan, causing a misunderstanding and conflict between them.

Ding dong ding dong... Zhang Zhentian’s mobile phone started ringing. Thinking it was Xia Jing, he answered the call without even looking, and blurted out, ”I knew you would call me. Are you missing me?”

As Zhang Zhentian rambled on happily, Li Jiayuan was taken aback to hear him speaking to her this way.

Not hearing a response, Zhang Zhentian asked, ”Why aren’t you talking?”

Coming back to her senses, Li Jiayuan cheerfully responded, ”Wow, you were so eager just after hanging up on me. Why the sudden change of attitude?”

As soon as she spoke, Zhang Zhentian abruptly ended the call.

Pacing and talking to himself, he said, ”Crap, it’s her again. She just won’t leave me alone.”

Unwilling to let it go, Li Jiayuan kept calling again and again—once, twice, three times... Eventually, tired of trying, she stopped because Zhang Zhentian wasn’t picking up. Right then, Xia Jing happened to call Zhang Zhentian’s mobile phone. Unable to take it anymore, Zhang Zhentian answered the call and before Xia Jing could speak, he said, ”Li Jiayuan, are you sick? Calling me in the middle of the night, not sleeping, what do you want?”

Hearing this, Xia Jing asked in a soft voice, ”What are you saying? Have you been talking to Li Jiayuan on the phone?”

Realizing it was Xia Jing’s voice, Zhang Zhentian mentally cursed his mistake. He started to explain to Xia Jing, but she didn’t give him any chance to speak and immediately hung up the phone and turned it off.

Hearing the busy tone from the phone, Zhang Zhentian hurriedly tried to call back, only to be greeted by the automated message indicating that Xia Jing’s phone was turned off.

Zhang Zhentian was in no mood to sleep now, furious with himself for his rashness and cursing someone without first checking who was calling.

Back at her home, Li Jiayuan was overjoyed. She had anticipated that Xia Jing would definitely call Zhang Zhentian, so she deliberately kept calling him non-stop. This way, as soon as Xia Jing called, Zhang Zhentian would assume it was her and lash out. Such tactics could once again strain the recently mended relationship between Zhang Zhentian and Xia Jing.

Li Jiayuan slept soundly that night, while Zhang Zhentian and Xia Jing endured a night of restlessness.
