Holding Their Own Space, the Family Returns to the Apocalypse

196: It actually upgraded! They thought the situation was under control, but unexpectedly, in the middle of the night, a soldier came to report that firearms and bullets were no longer effective. Furthermore, a massive swarm of zombies had emerged from nowhere and surrounded the base.

Gu Xiheng rushed straight to the front line without resting. Upon arrival, he saw that the zombies had indeed reached the perimeter. Moreover, as if they had caught the scent of humans, their movements had become agile, and their eyes had turned crimson, without a trace of black pupils.

They were constantly roaring at the humans on the heights, gradually crowding together, refusing to yield to one another as if they had discovered a feast.

Some zombies, unwilling to be pushed back by others, recklessly lunged onto their own kind and began to tear and devour them.

In the blink of an eye, only a grey skeletal frame remained scattered on the ground. After devouring its own kind, that zombie’s strength visibly increased, though its mind remained dull.

It could only passively endure being crowded by other zombies, and then proceed to devour them in turn.

Gu Xiheng, watching all this from the city wall, had an ominous thought.

It seemed these zombies could actually evolve!

This was definitely not good news for them.

He didn’t dare let that zombie grow stronger. Raising his arm, a streak of red flame whistled toward it.

In an instant, that zombie and those around it were burned to ashes.

“Yan Li!”

“Here!”

“Organize the Ability Warriors. Prioritize eliminating all zombies that are eating their own kind, regardless of the method,” Gu Xiheng ordered with a cold and stern expression.

“Yes, sir!”

Gu Xiheng used night-vision binoculars to carefully search for other cannibalistic zombies, destroying them without a word as soon as he spotted them.

He only stopped when his Superpower was completely exhausted.

At this moment, he desperately wished Ai Yue’s family was still in the Safety Tower. With Li Shilan’s Healing, he believed they would have had a much easier time.

Unfortunately, their family, along with Mo Li and the others, were forever buried under the ruins.

Although he still harbored hope that they were alive, he understood that under those circumstances, while Ai Yue might have escaped with her Earth Evasion Technique, the others would not have been so lucky.

Thinking of Ai Yue, a complicated feeling welled up in his heart, but he quickly suppressed it. Now was not the time for such thoughts.

As dawn gradually broke, Gu Xiheng noticed that once it was light, the zombies’ movements slowed down and became less aggressive.

When the sun was fully up and the scent of humans weakened, the zombies’ movements became stiff and sluggish. However, they still persistently crowded together, trying to climb the city wall.

Fortunately, they couldn’t jump high, so there was no need to worry too much.

Although Gu Xiheng didn’t know why, this phenomenon was good news for them, as it gave them a chance to catch their breath.

On the other side, Ai Yue and her group had left their original location. While taking a break, she used her Earth Evasion Technique to go back and retrieve the escape pod into her space.

This thing was too useful; she couldn’t just leave it there.

Ai Yue’s group had intended to head to the Songzhou Safety Tower, but after hitting the road, their situation wasn’t much better.

Before they had gone far, they encountered a wandering pack of zombies.

The zombies, which had been stiffly wandering without much vitality, immediately changed their form as Ai Yue’s group approached.

They lunged forward with rapid movements, trying to bite them.

“My god, what is this thing?” Mo Li was startled and instinctively used his Wind Superpower to blow the lunging zombie three meters away.

The zombie felt no pain at all; even with a broken arm, it still charged forward in a lopsided manner.

Seeing that he couldn’t kill it and feeling his pride wounded in front of Ye Rui, Mo Li became very angry. He used the Wind Superpower that he hadn’t used since it leveled up.

After the tornado he unleashed enveloped the zombie, he clenched his hands. With a ’pop’, the trapped zombie turned into a puddle of bloody mush. The scene was extremely gory.

No wonder Mo Li had been reluctant to use his Superpower after it leveled up; he also felt it was too bloody and inconvenient to use.

This time, for the sake of his pride, he didn’t care about hiding his skills anymore.

Subsequently, the others in Ai Yue’s group also took action.

It could be said that this temporary small team was among the most powerful people at the very pinnacle of the world’s power pyramid.

Thus, with Ai Yue and the others taking action, all the zombies appearing before them were quickly eliminated.

Ai Guosheng’s Annihilation, in particular, was so useful it made one want to cry with envy.

With a gentle wave of his hand, the zombies in front of him disintegrated into a puff of dust and vanished.

Ye Rui was not to be outdone. After a round of Lightning, the zombies’ heads were split open.

Ai Yue kept Li Shilan firmly protected behind her, while she herself threw out a streak of red-gold flame to attack the lunging zombies.

On the surface, the flame Ai Yue emitted didn’t seem as hot as Gu Xiheng’s, and it didn’t give off an intense heat. In reality, it was only when the flame touched the surface of the object to be burned that it released scorching high temperatures, vaporizing it in an instant.

Gong Qiumu was the youngest. Due to his family background, he had been strictly raised by his parents and never had free time to watch movies. Therefore, he didn’t know what was going on with the group of people they had just eliminated.

He had been in a state of surprise the whole time. Now that the battle was over, he finally asked the question on his mind.

“What was with that group of people just now? Why did they become so terrifying? If we weren’t a bit more powerful, they really would have lunged onto us.”

Looking at the confused Gong Qiumu, Ai Yue explained, “Do you know what zombies are?”

“Zombies?” Gong Qiumu’s eyes glazed over for a moment, as if recalling a distant memory. “I’ve heard my classmates mention them. Could it be that these are zombies?”

Ai Yue said, “Yes!”

Gong Qiumu nodded, his confusion resolved. He then added, “Aren’t zombies supposed to be very scary? To me, they just look a bit frightening but aren’t that hard to deal with. Why is it said that a zombie outbreak becomes so terrifying?”

Gong Qiuqiu interjected, “That’s because we’ve all awakened Superpowers, so we can handle this sudden situation with ease. But not everyone is as powerful as us. Besides, the terror of zombies lies in their contagiousness.”

“Contagiousness?”

“Yes. Once a person is infected, they’re basically beyond saving and will soon turn into a zombie. This zombie virus is very easy to spread; even a tiny scratch from a zombie makes it impossible to escape that fate,” Gong Qiuqiu said, sighing as she looked at the corpses on the ground.

“So, you must remember, never let a zombie scratch you. Otherwise, even the Great Golden Immortal couldn’t save you, do you understand?” Gong Qiuqiu said with a solemn face.

Gong Qiumu became extremely vigilant toward zombies. Seeing that he had taken it to heart, Gong Qiuqiu felt relieved.
