This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

The incident happened suddenly, but Du Heng reacted quickly.

Seeing the boy get hit by the car, his heart tightened, and he immediately shouted, ”Don’t come over here! Just stand where you are!” Then he dashed towards the boy.

It had all happened too fast; he hadn’t seen clearly whether the boy had been dragged by the car or hit squarely and thrown clear.

If he was dragged, that would be better—probably just local abrasions and fractures. But if he was hit directly by a car going at that speed, the young man could be torn to pieces.

The car that hit him had sped off quite a distance before braking, but the boy was close to Du Heng, having rolled only a few times, about seven or eight meters away.

”Classmate, are you okay?”

By the time Du Heng reached the boy, other students had already gathered around. Some wanted to help, while others were merely curious onlookers.

But Du Heng had no time for them now.

As he called out, he saw the boy had already fainted. There was an obvious wound on his forehead, and blood was starting to flow.

Du Heng knelt to check him and, leaning closer, caught the distinct smell of alcohol.

So, the kid had been drinking. No wonder he’d resorted to the drama of chasing a girl down a main road. Liquid courage, that must have been it.

A quick examination revealed only abrasions aside from the head wound; he had simply fainted. Du Heng let out a slight sigh of relief. He probably wasn’t hit squarely, but rather grazed by the car and thrown, hitting his head on the ground. That, combined with the alcohol, must have knocked him out.

However, when Du Heng looked at the boy’s right calf again, his heart tightened inexplicably.

The rest of his body seemed fine, but his right calf had clearly been grazed. Seeing the pant leg already stained red with blood, Du Heng shifted position and began to roll up the boy’s trousers.

But, as ill luck would have it, the boy wasn’t wearing ordinary fleece-lined long johns, but freaking fleece-lined stretch pants.

Looking at the blood-soaked fabric, who knew what state the leg was in underneath? Who would dare to just yank off those stretch pants?

Damn it! Couldn’t he have worn some loose, breathable, fleece-lined long johns? Why wear such tight stretch pants now? Is he trying to hatch eggs or something?

Du Heng felt a momentary urge to not deal with it. Anyway, there was nothing life-threatening about a calf injury. Just wait for the ambulance.

Just as he was about to stand up, a pair of very delicate small scissors and an equally delicate hand suddenly appeared before him. Before Du Heng could comprehend her intention, with a few SNIPS, the small scissors cut a slit upwards from the cuff of the boy’s pant leg.

Say what you will, those scissors looked small, but they were incredibly sharp.

Du Heng looked up and saw it was the girl named Xie Lu. Behind her stood Du Xuejing and a few others, all looking at the boy on the ground with terrified expressions.

But Du Heng was very curious about one thing: Why would she carry such a strange item? What on earth was it for?

When Du Heng lowered his head again, Xie Lu was already deftly parting the cut fabric.

”Don’t pull it apart!” Du Heng exclaimed.

But he was a fraction too late. As Xie Lu moved her hands, the wound on the boy’s calf was fully revealed. She looked innocently at Du Heng.

Du Heng felt his own breath catch in his throat, trembling.

Seeing Du Heng’s expression, Xie Lu followed his gaze.

There, on the outer side of the boy’s calf, about ten centimeters below the knee, the parted stretch pants had torn away a flap of skin and flesh.

”AH!”

With a scream, Xie Lu abruptly let go of the stretch pants.

Du Heng was instantly furious. Is this girl out of her mind? He shoved her aside. The car didn’t kill him, but she might accidentally do it!

”Du Xuejing, get her away from here!”

His face grim, Du Heng ignored the girl and hurriedly examined the boy’s leg wound.

Fortunately, it was just a piece of skin and a little bit of flesh torn off; nothing life-threatening.

However, when Du Heng couldn’t resist gently palpating the boy’s lower leg bones, the situation felt very grim.

Ten centimeters below the knee, the tibia had what could only be described as a comminuted fracture; Du Heng’s sensitive touch could feel five or six fragments.

Moreover, the fibula was fractured and dislocated.

At least the knee is fine, no problems there. Forget it, just wait for the ambulance.

Du Heng was about to stand up but found himself placing his hand back on the boy’s injured area.

This is partly my fault today. If I hadn’t come out just then, this kid wouldn’t have stepped back. If he hadn’t taken that step, he wouldn’t have suffered this unwarranted disaster. Once he’s sent to the hospital, he’ll inevitably face surgery, steel pins, perhaps even a couple of steel plates—what an ordeal. And after a year and a half, he’ll need another surgery to remove all that hardware, suffering all over again. Since I’m somewhat responsible for his injury, and I do have the skills... why not step in and alleviate some of his pain?

Du Heng kept trying to find reasons, mentally preparing himself, searching for an excuse to intervene.

But deep down, he knew the truth: he was itching to act. Ever since he had treated Zhu Heizi, that kind of satisfaction and sense of accomplishment was something simply prescribing medicine in the Internal Medicine Department could never provide.

Ultimately, the itch to act won.

With both hands, he carefully rotated the boy’s lower leg outward so the right side of the calf rested on the ground. He then slowly felt for the fracture site, palpating it to determine where to apply pressure.

The onlookers watched Du Heng in confusion, not understanding what he was doing. Even Du Xuejing was bewildered. ”Uncle, what are you doing?”

Du Heng ignored Du Xuejing, his concentration entirely on the state of the bones. He failed to notice, however, that due to his constant pressing and palpating, expressions of pain occasionally flickered across the unconscious boy’s face.

After about thirty seconds, Du Heng finally had a clear sense of it and pressed down sharply on the fracture site.

”AHHHH!”

A terrible scream tore through the air. The unconscious boy woke up, but after a few more cries, he fainted again.

My apologies, Du Heng thought, even as he muttered aloud, ”This is all for your own good, to save you the pain of surgery and steel pins.” Yet, his hands moved with the utmost ’gentleness’ as he lightly massaged the area of the broken bone.

After performing the reduction, he tore off the cut section of the boy’s pant leg. He then took the small scissors from the dazed Xie Lu behind him, cut the fabric into strips, borrowed two books from the onlooking students, and fashioned a simple splint to immobilize the leg.

Once everything was done, Du Heng let out a long breath and slowly stood up. That felt great!

However, he didn’t notice that the surrounding students were now looking at him with eyes full of fear. Especially now, seeing Du Heng actually wearing an expression of deep satisfaction, they were even more convinced he was some kind of deviant.

Du Xuejing was also terrified by Du Heng’s actions; she had no idea what her uncle was up to.

Seeing Du Heng stand up, she slowly approached him again and asked cautiously, ”Uncle, what did you just do?”

”Oh, I just set your classmate’s broken bones. He’ll suffer less in the future.”

”Uncle, when did you learn bone-setting?”

”I’ve always known how. By the way, what are these little scissors for?” Du Heng handed the small scissors back to Xie Lu. He was quite curious about this tiny, delicate, yet very sharp instrument.

Xie Lu took the scissors and whispered, ”They’re for trimming nails.”

Du Heng was taken aback. Don’t people usually use nail clippers for fingernails? Since when do they use tiny scissors like these? But then he figured girls often had all sorts of peculiar things, so he didn’t press further.

Just then, the traffic police had barely arrived when the ambulance pulled up right behind them. A group of doctors looked at the boy’s leg and froze. ”Who did this?”

Du Heng stepped forward. ”Tibial comminuted fracture, fibula fracture with dislocation. I performed a reduction.”

The emergency doctor who got out of the ambulance gave Du Heng a strange look. Are your eyes X-ray machines or something, that you can tell all that? he wondered.

However, he refrained from any skeptical or sarcastic remarks and, after a moment’s hesitation, asked, ”Are you a doctor?”

”Yes, I currently work in the Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department at Good Friend Hospital. If there are any problems, you can find me. My name is Du Heng.” As he spoke, he handed over his work ID and his regular ID card for the man to inspect.

”Alright.”

Hearing he was a doctor from Good Friend Hospital, and after glancing at the work ID and ID card, the emergency doctor swallowed whatever he was about to say. He didn’t ask any more questions and carefully helped move the boy onto the ambulance. Anyway, as long as there’s someone to hold accountable if something goes wrong, it’s fine, he probably thought.

「At the First Affiliated Hospital of the Chinese Medicine Hospital.」

The Director of the Emergency Department frowned deeply as he reviewed the incoming imaging data.

Perfect. Too damn perfect. If the paramedic who brought the patient in hadn’t mentioned that the X-rays still showed fracture lines and signs of joining, he would have assumed it was a normal leg.

”Xiao He, did that person say which hospital he’s from?”

”He said his name is Du Heng, from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department at Good Friend Hospital.”

A hint of confusion flickered in the Emergency Department Director’s eyes.

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine Department at Good Friend Hospital... He was quite familiar with it. As far as he could recall, there was no bone-setting doctor there with such incredible skill.

Just as he was racking his brains, a middle-aged doctor approached from behind. ”Zhang, why did you call me over?”

The Emergency Department Director turned to look at the newcomer. ”Li, what brings you here?”

”I just finished surgery and was about to head home. Then you called, and the chief sent me right over. So, what’s going on? Tell me quickly.”

”Here, take a look at these scans. Does this need surgery?”

The man called Li casually leaned towards the computer. But the more he looked, the stranger his expression became. Finally, he pulled the Emergency Department Director up from his chair. ”Move aside, let me get a better look.”

Taking his seat before the computer, Li examined all the images—left, right, and frontal views—before frowning and asking, ”Why do these scans look so incredibly strange?”

The Emergency Department Director asked with a grin, ”How so?”

”Look, this section is shattered into eight or nine pieces. It should be a comminuted fracture. Yet, the fragments are all perfectly aligned in their original positions, almost as if it’s just a hairline crack. But if it’s shattered this badly, how could they possibly still be in their original positions? And this section of the fibula—it’s clearly fractured, but now the break is so neatly aligned. I’m very curious how it was broken in the first place without causing any displacement.”
