This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Zhang Xintian faithfully carried out his maternal grandfather’s instructions every day, and after two days of observation, he had figured out the routine of the Health Clinic across the street.

At 8:00 a.m., they would give Zhu Minyan a check-up, and at 5:30 p.m., they would give her another one.

She took her medicine three times a day: once at 7:30 a.m., once at 2:30 p.m., and once at 8:00 p.m.

As long as he avoided these specific times, Zhu Minyan would always accept his video calls.

On Wednesday, the third day Zhu Minyan had been declining his calls, he connected with her again. During their video chat, she was once again wrapped in a silk scarf.

”Zhu Minyan, how are you feeling today? Is there any difference from yesterday?” Zhang Xintian looked concerned, and as soon as the video call connected, he eagerly asked.

Zhu Minyan, wrapped in her silk scarf, also began to have some unusual thoughts. This teacher is too enthusiastic, requesting video calls every day. It has been three days now. Although he’s handsome and young... But I’m his student! This isn’t right! And yet, I can’t seem to refuse his concern.

Lost in her thoughts, she suddenly became aware of her appearance, and the slight smile that had just touched her lips behind the scarf secretly faded.

This pattern had repeated itself over the past three days.

”The lump has softened a bit, and when I push it, it can be moved around in a circle,” she said.

”That’s good; the results are really good,” Zhang Xintian said happily. ”Hasn’t your attending doctor come to see you today?”

”No, I heard Doctor Du went to the Provincial First Hospital to see outpatients.”

”He’s gone to the Provincial First Hospital to see outpatients? Are you kidding me?” Zhang Xintian’s earlier delight hadn’t faded before it was immediately replaced by astonishment.

Even if he was ignorant about some things, he knew that a provincial-level hospital was definitely among the top few in the entire province. For a doctor from a mere Health Clinic, at the very bottom of the medical food chain, to actually be going to the Provincial First Hospital to see outpatients... Either he had misheard, or Zhu Minyan had misspoken.

”Zhu Minyan, did you get it wrong? Did he go to the Provincial First Hospital for advanced training, perhaps?”

”No, he really went to see outpatients. I heard Doctor Du has a huge number of patients now. He has to start at seven-thirty in the morning; otherwise, he can’t finish seeing everyone before the outpatient clinic closes.”

Zhang Xintian found it even harder to believe; this sounded like something out of a story.

Before his doubts could dissipate, Zhu Minyan continued, ”It’s true. I even heard Doctor Du on the phone with a Director Li and a Director Xu. They were asking him how to handle a certain patient’s case.”

Seeing Zhu Minyan speak so earnestly and with such certainty, and remembering she was his student and unlikely to deceive him, Zhang Xintian felt conflicted.

When Zhu Minyan saw that her handsome teacher still didn’t believe her, she quickly added more of what she’d heard, ”I also heard that Doctor Du isn’t just the externally employed Deputy Director of the Chinese Medicine Department at the Provincial First Hospital, but he’s also the externally employed Deputy Director of their Digestion Department 1. He regularly participates in treatment work for both departments.”

”Are you serious?” Zhang Xintian’s eyes were opened yet again. This completely subverted his understanding; the medical world he knew wasn’t like this at all.

”Of course, it’s true. I even confirmed it with the nurses here. And the nurses told me that Doctor Du has twice saved patients who were on the brink of death—patients our Municipal First Hospital had given up on—and they’re living very well now. Oh, and Doctor Du treated a patient with gastric cancer and actually cured them!”

”Where did you hear that? Gastric cancer genuinely cured?” Zhang Xintian increasingly felt that Zhu Minyan was just making things up.

”The doctors here showed me the records. They had all the patient’s information and treatment details. That patient took the medicine for two consecutive months, and their tumor has almost completely disappeared now.”

Zhang Xintian no longer felt like chatting with Zhu Minyan. The more they talked, the more far-fetched it all sounded.

However, as time went on, he slowly began to believe Zhu Minyan’s words.

On August 15th, the tenth day of treatment, all the pus and blood from Zhu Minyan’s condition had cleared.

By August 22nd, the mass on her left neck had shrunk by half, and the one on her right neck had reduced to the size of a soybean. She was energetic and her complexion was rosy; she only felt a little short of breath.

”Take off your scarf; let me see,” Zhang Xintian said, his interest intensely piqued now that he heard the mass had shrunk by half.

But Zhu Minyan had kept her silk scarf on throughout their video calls, so he could only hear about her actual condition from her and couldn’t see it for himself.

Zhu Minyan hesitated, but at Zhang Xintian’s insistence, she slowly removed the silk scarf.

Instantly, Zhang Xintian, on the other side of the video call, stared with his mouth agape.

It truly had shrunk! He still had the original images he had printed out himself; those couldn’t be faked.

However, when Zhu Minyan saw Zhang Xintian’s slightly agape mouth, her expression dimmed. Thinking of the lumps on her neck and her own pale face, she quickly put the silk scarf back on and ended the video call.

Zhang Xintian didn’t pay it any mind. Right then, he only wanted to tell his maternal grandfather what he had just seen.

After listening, Lan Changhua took out the inspection sheet and compared it again and again.

Too fast, much too fast! he thought. In just half a month, the tumor has already shrunk by half! And I heard the medicine was changed today. This means they have a contingency plan; they thought through every step clearly before acting. This isn’t an effect achieved by sheer luck!
