The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

RAIGORO’S POV

The name was written in ordinary black ink.

After months of investigation, the simplicity bothered Raigoro. Daric had only placed one old copied household account beneath the lamp, and there it was beside a tutor payment:

PRINCESS DIANA VALENCE.

Raigoro read the name twice.

Daric stood across from him.

”Independent source?”

”Yes.”

”Created when?”

”During Queen Elara’s lifetime.”

”Copied later?”

”The document we have is a witnessed foreign copy of the original diplomatic household report. The source notation predates the period when Diana disappears from Valence records.”

Diana.

Raigoro looked at the name again.

He did not attach it to his wife yet.

One erased princess with the right age and the right mother did not become the woman in his Citadel merely because the theory had become compelling.

”Second source.”

Daric was already reaching for it.

A diplomatic household list from another Crown.

King Odran.

Queen Elara.

PRINCESS DIANA VALENCE, FIRST PRINCESS.

Princess Selena Valence appeared beneath her.

Younger.

Publicly acknowledged.

Diana had been publicly acknowledged as a royal daughter, rather than hidden as an illegitimate child, passed off as a relative, or preserved only through unreliable memory.

The firstborn had a name.

A title.

A place in succession.

Raigoro read the line beneath Diana’s.

Selena was the woman he had demanded under the covenant and the woman Blackharrow believed he had married.

He remembered the wedding chapel.

The priest saying the Blood Compact confirmed royal blood but gave no name.

Odran pushing the ceremony forward.

His bride hesitating when called Selena.

A woman famous for conversation standing silent beneath a veil.

Alma watching everyone in the room as though danger could come from any direction.

”Age.”

Daric brought another record.

A foreign religious invitation sent to Valence for a royal children’s observance.

Diana’s age appeared beside her title.

The arithmetic fit.

The evidence had narrowed sharply, though Raigoro still did not consider it proof of his wife’s identity.

He opened another page himself.

A portrait inventory.

PORTRAIT OF PRINCESS DIANA, SIXTH YEAR.

His hand stopped.

Six.

His wife had never told him the age when her voice disappeared.

But the memories she had given him were childhood memories.

Her memories had included stone, fire, chains, and Vharos shielding her beneath falling stone.

Vharos had recognized her.

Daric said nothing.

Raigoro looked toward him.

”You already thought of it.”

”Yes.”

”Do not use it yet.”

”I know.”

The portrait inventory did not say anything happened when Diana was six.

It merely proved Diana was publicly visible at six.

The coincidence belonged in the file, but not in the conclusion.

More records followed.

A court attendance list showed both Diana and Selena present. Several years later, an embassy dinner listed Selena while Diana was absent without explanation. Household expenditure summaries showed Diana’s tutors and attendants gradually reduced, followed the next year by a much smaller allocation and then another reduction.

Raigoro saw the erasure happening through numbers.

The erasure did not happen through one decree or formal declaration that Princess Diana had ceased to exist. It happened through ordinary reductions: a tutor removed, a ceremonial allowance gone, a portrait no longer listed, and a household made smaller until later records no longer needed to explain the child who had once occupied it.

”What happens after Elara dies?” he asked.

Daric separated the documents by year.

”That is where it accelerates.”

Raigoro read.

Before Elara’s death, Diana appeared irregularly but unmistakably.

Afterward, references dropped sharply.

Later Valence succession copies named Selena as First Princess.

No transition order accompanied the change.

Raigoro looked up.

”Death?”

”None found.”

”Marriage?”

”No.”

”Renunciation?”

”No.”

”Religious retirement?”

”No.”

”Exile?”

”No formal order.”

”Succession removal?”

”Nothing independent.”

A royal firstborn could not simply change into a younger sister without paperwork.

Even if Diana had died, death should leave records.

Even if Odran had disinherited her, royal succession should leave an order.

Even if she had been sent to a religious house, some receiving institution should acknowledge her.

Instead, Diana appeared repeatedly in the older records and then almost vanished. Afterward, Selena began appearing as First Princess without any surviving document explaining the transition.

Raigoro stood.

He crossed to the archive window.

Below, the Citadel continued repairing after Broken Ward.

Supply wagons crossed the lower court.

An engineer argued with a clerk.

Household servants carried folded blankets toward the Winter Court.

His wife’s court.

Her work.

He looked back at the name on the table.

Diana Valence.

The ease with which the name fit his wife unsettled him.

The evidence now gave him an erased firstborn daughter whose history clearly began long before the marriage, a woman Odran had guided through the wedding while the priest called her Selena, a bride whose muteness predated Raigoro’s arrival in Valence, Alma’s years of familiarity, and Vharos’s recognition.

Still, Raigoro would not turn fit into certainty.

”What is the strongest alternative?” he asked.

Daric knew what he meant.

”The Princess Diana in these records could have died without surviving independent documentation.”

”Yes.”

”Your wife could be another royal-blooded relation Odran hid.”

”Yes.”

”Selena could still have suffered an unrecorded loss of speech during the nineteen days before the marriage, while Diana’s history is unrelated.”

Raigoro turned.

Daric’s expression made clear what he thought of that explanation.

”Still possible,” Raigoro said.

”Technically.”

”I dislike that word.”

”It remains useful.”

Raigoro returned to the table.

”Find the final years.”

”Already sorting.”

”Everything after Elara dies.”

”Yes.”

”Medical.”

”Yes.”

”Household.”

”Yes.”

”Foreign correspondence.”

”Yes.”

”Anything explaining why Diana disappeared.”

Daric nodded.

Raigoro put one finger beside the name.

He did not say it aloud again.

The word itself did not frighten him. What mattered was assigning it to someone who had not given it to him.

For months, she had been the Duchess, his wife, the woman Odran gave him, and possibly someone other than Selena.

If Raigoro called her Diana before the evidence earned it, he would be doing exactly what Odran had done in reverse.

Assigning a name to a woman because it fit what he wanted the situation to mean.

He would not do that. He would know first and then ask.

Daric opened another packet.

Most of the papers concerned Queen Elara’s final years.

Visitors restricted.

Court appearances reduced.

Household spending changed.

A letter from a foreign envoy mentioned that the First Princess had not appeared at two expected observances.

No reason.

Another reported that Odran’s younger daughter had begun appearing more often beside the king.

Still no explanation.

Then Daric stopped.

The next paper was dated after Queen Elara’s death.

He read the first lines.

Raigoro waited.

Daric looked up.

”This one concerns Princess Diana.”

”Read it.”

Daric hesitated only long enough to make Raigoro’s attention sharpen.

”It concerns her health.”

Raigoro held out his hand.

Daric kept the page.

”Not yet.”

Raigoro’s attention sharpened. ”Why?”

”Because I can read what the physician wrote. I am not qualified to decide what the diagnosis establishes.”

Raigoro lowered his hand.

Daric looked at the document again. After months of rejecting evidence that was too late, too damaged, too derivative, or simply too convenient, he had no intention of becoming careless because this page appeared to confirm what they already suspected.

”I want a healer to interpret it before either of us builds the rest of the case around it.”

Raigoro studied him for a moment, then nodded.

”Do that.”

Daric closed the document inside its protective folder.

The name remained visible on the earlier record between them.

PRINCESS DIANA VALENCE.

For the first time, they had a documented royal daughter who fit too many things about Raigoro’s wife to dismiss.

The next record might narrow the distance further.

Daric intended to know exactly how far before he let either of them cross it.
