The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

DIANA’S POV

The Rellan emergency ended.

The chairs and the new coordinating order remained.

Diana had read the new coordinating order four times the previous night despite understanding it on the first.

The work came from something she had done correctly. It was responsibility people genuinely needed, not ceremonial occupation for the Grand Duchess.

Someone would now bring Diana contradictions because Blackharrow expected her to notice them.

Diana liked that.

For years, usefulness in Valence had meant finding ways to matter without anyone being required to acknowledge that she did.

This time, the responsibility was written down and defined. People were expected to bring the work to her.

Diana looked once more at the heading:

GRAND DUCHESS’S HOUSEHOLD.

The title belonged to Selena.

Diana folded the order and put it away before that thought could ruin the rest.

She stood in the infirmary waiting area several days after the last Rellan family left and looked at the collection Blackharrow had assembled during the emergency.

There were guest chairs, dining chairs, two benches from an unused household room, and one narrow stool somebody had carried from the kitchens and never reclaimed.

The corridor looked as though several rooms had emptied their worst furniture into it and hoped Diana would not notice.

She noticed.

Mistress Hale stood beside her.

”You want these returned?”

Diana wrote: EVENTUALLY.

The housekeeper waited.

Families had spent days waiting for Rellan reports along that wall. The Citadel had found chairs when it needed them. It had found spare rooms, food, blankets, and clerks.

What it had not possessed was a place designed for waiting.

She wrote: WHERE DO FAMILIES USUALLY WAIT?

Mistress Hale looked around.

”Here.”

Diana stared at her.

”For ordinary cases,” the housekeeper added.

HOW MANY?

”Usually one family. Two.”

Rellan had brought nine affected households to the Citadel at once, along with the existing demands of an infirmary that had not yet emptied after the border defense.

Mistress Hale followed Diana’s attention toward the infirmary doors.

”The Citadel was not built for a mine collapse every week.”

Good.

Diana had no desire to test one designed that way.

She walked farther down the corridor.

A narrow side arch led toward an interior household court Diana had noticed during the Rellan emergency but never entered.

The door stood unlocked now.

Diana opened it.

Cold air met her.

The courtyard was enclosed on four sides by household and infirmary-support wings on the Healing and Household Terrace, open only to the pale winter sky above.

Snow had gathered along the edges.

A stone path crossed the center.

Against one wall stood the remains of several old planting beds, mostly empty except for dead stems and windblown leaves.

Two doors on the opposite side had been sealed shut.

Diana looked at Mistress Hale.

WHAT IS THIS?

”Old household court.”

USED FOR?

The housekeeper thought.

”Several things over the years. Small guest gatherings. Convalescent walking when the infirmary was smaller. I believe children from the family wing used it once.”

WHY STOP?

”The newer household halls opened. The infirmary expanded. Nobody needed this particular court anymore.”

Diana looked around again.

Then wrote: WHO CONTROLS IT NOW?

Mistress Hale considered.

”Household administration maintains the court, but infirmary expansion placed the eastern rooms under shared use. Any permanent change would require Household Works, the infirmary, and the steward’s office to agree on cost.”

Of course.

Even abandoned courtyards had paperwork.

Diana wrote: BUDGET?

”None assigned specifically to this court.”

Of course the abandoned court had no budget.

That, at least, made immediate sense.

Diana walked to the middle.

The surrounding walls blocked most of the wind, although the court remained very cold. Enough daylight reached it even during winter. The infirmary lay behind one wall and the family corridor beyond another, close enough to serve both without sitting inside the treatment rooms or the main traffic route.

Diana wrote slowly.

A WAITING PLACE.

Mistress Hale read it.

”For the infirmary?”

Diana nodded.

Then added: FOR EMERGENCIES TOO.

Diana looked toward the sealed room nearest the infirmary wall.

She wrote: PRIVACY.

Somewhere families could receive bad news without a corridor watching their faces.

Mistress Hale began listing the offices any real change would require: Household Works, the infirmary, Ward Command, and the steward’s office.

Diana stopped her at the question of winter planting.

WHO KNOWS WHAT SURVIVES HERE?

Mistress Hale considered.

”The Citadel gardeners. Lady Tavia as well.”

Asking Tavia for help no longer felt like admitting the other woman belonged here better. It felt like using the person who knew something Diana did not.

Diana took a new slate.

SEND TAVIA A MESSAGE.

Mistress Hale asked, ”What should it say?”

Diana looked around the empty courtyard.

Then wrote: I NEED TO KNOW WHAT DOES NOT DIE IN WINTER.

Mistress Hale read it.

”I may phrase that slightly differently.”

***

Tavia’s written answer returned first.

She could come to the Citadel once the eastern transport work allowed it.

Five days later, Tavia arrived expecting flowers.

Diana could tell because the first thing she said was, ”If you want Southern roses, I am the wrong person.”

Diana turned the slate she had prepared.

GOOD.

Tavia stopped.

Mistress Hale’s mouth moved.

Diana led her into the old court and handed over the infirmary list and preliminary works estimate.

Tavia read both, looked around once, and asked, ”What are you making?”

Diana wrote: A PLACE TO WAIT.

Tavia looked at the estimate again.

”You cannot do all of this now.”

Diana looked at her.

Tavia pointed to the page.

”Household Works has enough winter labor and allocated material for the drainage repair and one major improvement before the spring works reopen.”

Diana wrote: HEAT.

”Drainage.”

Diana stared.

The older people at Rellan had waited in a freezing corridor.

Warmth was the obvious problem.

She wrote: THE COURT IS COLD.

”And if you heat it before fixing where the roof melt goes, the south entrance freezes every night.”

Diana looked toward the drain channel.

Tavia continued.

”Warm stone melts snow. Meltwater crosses the path. Night temperature drops. You have built an infirmary waiting court with an ice hazard at the entrance.”

Diana disliked the explanation almost immediately, mostly because she understood it.

She wrote:

THEN DRAINAGE FIRST.

Tavia looked at the slate.

”You can object longer if you want.”

Diana wrote: YOU ARE STILL RIGHT.

”That has never prevented most people.”

Diana looked at the estimate again.

Annoying.

Useful.

She kept it.

Tavia glanced toward the infirmary wall.

”For whom?”

FAMILIES.

Diana pointed toward the infirmary.

Tavia understood.

”Rellan.”

Diana nodded.

The other woman walked toward the planting beds, and her entire manner shifted from polite guest to someone solving a problem. Diana recognized the change because she had seen Tavia do the same thing over transport ledgers.

Tavia crouched beside the stone border.

”Once the drainage is repaired, these may be usable.”

Mistress Hale answered.

”Household Works says the old channels are intact below the blockage.”

”Good.”

Tavia looked upward.

”Sun reaches this side?”

”Late morning through early afternoon in winter.”

”Then you can keep hardy greens along the south wall.”

Diana pointed toward the infirmary list.

Tavia read.

”Wintermint will survive. Bitterleaf too, if the healers actually want this much of it.”

Mistress Hale said, ”They do.”

”Mountain thyme.”

Tavia crossed one item out.

”Not there.”

Diana pointed.

WHY?

”Too wet once snow begins melting from the roof edge.”

Diana looked at the roof.

She would not have noticed.

Tavia pointed toward the opposite bed.

”There.”

Diana made a note.

”What about flowers?” Alma asked.

Tavia looked at her.

Alma gestured toward Diana. ”She rejected Southern roses once already. I would like to know whether Blackharrow has anything that survives her standards.”

Diana gave her a look.

Tavia answered seriously.

”Frostbells.”

Diana looked at her.

”Small. Pale blue. They grow near heated rock even under snow.”

Decorative.

But local.

And alive.

HOW MUCH WORK?

”Very little after they establish.”

Acceptable.

The rest of the planning went onto a list instead of becoming decisions: benches, heating, child safety, the sealed room, and the old roof.

Each required someone who knew more than Diana or Tavia did.

Diana wrote the appropriate office beside every problem.

For once, asking someone else did not feel like proving she did not belong here.

They moved toward the courtyard entrance.

Diana hesitated before writing the next question.

She had thought it several times since the Winter Muster and never intended to ask. Today it seemed less dangerous.

She wrote: I THOUGHT YOU DISLIKED ME.

Tavia stopped.

Mistress Hale quietly found a reason to inspect the sealed room again.

Alma did not.

Naturally.

Tavia read the sentence a second time.

”I did not know you well enough to dislike you.”

Diana blinked.

Apparently she had prepared for a much more complicated answer.

Tavia continued.

”You were inconvenient.”

Diana stared.

Tavia’s mouth moved.

”Your marriage changed the territorial gathering, the Muster arrangements, half the household routes, and approximately every conversation in Blackharrow for several weeks.”

That seemed excessive.

Diana wrote: I DID NOT DO MOST OF THAT.

”I know.”

Tavia looked toward the courtyard.

”I blamed you for some of it at first. Eventually I realized most of it had happened around you, not because of you.”

The honesty made it difficult to be offended.

Diana wrote: AND NOW?

Tavia considered.

”Now you are asking me how to keep old people warm and children from climbing a wall.”

Diana waited.

”I have no objection to that.”

Diana had not asked Tavia for friendship.

Being understood correctly was enough for today.

Tavia turned toward the planting bed.

”I’ll send you the names of two local growers who can supply frostbells without digging them out of protected mountain ground.”

Diana nodded.

”And if anyone tries to sell you imported winter roses, refuse.”

Diana held up her slate.

ALREADY DID.

Tavia looked at her.

”When?”

WINTER HOMECOMING.

Tavia laughed.

”I suppose I really did not know you.”

Tavia gathered the planting notes, but Diana stopped her before she reached the arch.

There was still one decision on the works estimate.

Diana took the slate.

DRAINAGE FIRST.

Tavia read it and nodded.

”Then the rest can actually stay standing.”

Diana turned the slate toward Mistress Hale.

The housekeeper understood.

”If the revised proposal clears Household Works and the steward today, the first crew can begin tomorrow.”

Diana wrote: BEGIN.

Mistress Hale took the estimate.

By tomorrow, Household Works would be lifting the first stones from the blocked drainage channel. The benches, heating, plants, and private room would come later.

For now, there was a first job and an office responsible for doing it.
