The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

BLACKHARROW CITADEL: DIANA’S POV

Earlier that night, a runner from Dragon Heights had found Diana in the audit room.

”Your Grace.”

The man’s urgency had made her stand before he finished.

”Vharos left the Citadel.”

Diana stared at him.

Her slate came up.

NORTH?

”Yes.”

CLEARED?

”No.”

The runner hesitated.

”Master Clair did not clear him for combat. Healer Lou did not clear a sustained war flight.”

Diana pressed the chalk harder between her fingers.

STOPPED?

”They tried to turn him back. Once he committed to the upper launch court, physically restraining him would have risked injuring him.”

The runner swallowed.

”They fitted the light safety harness, cleared the court so he would not strike anyone during launch, and sent notice to field command.”

Diana looked toward the northern windows.

Vharos had gone anyway.

The memory of Raigoro’s words in the cavern returned with cruel precision.

He still went.

Diana put one hand against the scar at her throat.

Since Vharos left, the dragonstone at Diana’s throat had been running hot in uneven pulses.

She had recorded each change because she did not know what it meant. She knew only that the pattern did not match Vharos’s recent Citadel baseline.

Halfway through one pulse, the heat vanished.

Diana stood so quickly that the chair struck the wall behind her, and Alma caught the edge of the table.

”What?”

Diana pressed one hand against the scar at her throat. The resonance returned, faint and wrong compared with the pattern she had been recording.

Diana reached automatically for a message sheet.

Her hand stopped over it.

What could she write? Vharos’s resonance had changed, but she did not know when the change began, why it happened, where he was, or whether it meant injury, exhaustion, distance, the bond, or something Diana still did not understand.

She had nothing precise enough to change a battlefield decision.

Even if she did, whatever had just happened had already happened. A message leaving the Citadel now would arrive later.

After days of working through records, contradictions, and warnings that could still matter if they moved quickly enough, Diana finally had a fact she could not put to useful work.

She left the message sheet blank.

Her chalk shook against the slate.

VHAROS.

Alma looked at her.

”What happened?”

Diana shook her head.

She did not know.

No messenger had arrived yet to tell them what had happened, which left Diana with the dragonstone and no explanation.

That was almost worse.

THE JUNCTION: RAIGORO’S POV

Raigoro reached the inner line before the next stoneback did.

Arven’s line was already engaged across the burning remains of the barrier.

Raigoro moved where the formation thinned, not where the nearest creature happened to be.

The battle no longer needed another isolated kill.

It needed the line to remain a line.

Kian’s soldiers were still on the ridge road toward North Spur, regardless of how badly Raigoro needed them here.

The junction would hold with what remained.

Ash hounds came through the broken western approach.

Stonebacks pressed the inner barrier.

Archers fired from the last usable tower while the final effective Dragon Host pair remained occupied above the eastern wall.

Meris was grounded and Vharos was down.

Nobody was going to solve the junction from the sky.

Holt’s runner came up.

”Central brace is carrying.”

Raigoro blocked an ash hound with his sword and shouted over his shoulder:

”What is not?”

”North housing.”

”Can Holt hold it?”

”If we clear weight above him.”

Raigoro looked at the inner court.

Of course that was where his remaining reserve stood.

”Arven!”

The captain reached him.

Raigoro pointed.

”Spread the reserve.”

Arven looked at the same court.

”That opens the center.”

”I know.”

”How long?”

”Until Holt stops needing us standing on his head.”

Arven shouted the order.

The enemy saw the movement.

Or whoever directed it understood what movement meant.

Pressure shifted toward the center.

Three ash hounds broke through.

Then six.

Raigoro committed his command guard.

Then himself.

He gave them no speech. The soldiers around him already knew what happened if the line moved again.

They had to hold the stair, keep the lower access open, and give Holt the minutes he needed.

A soldier lost his spear and kept fighting with the broken shaft.

Another remained in line with blood running into one eye until Arven physically ordered him toward medical.

A ward lamp shattered when a stoneback struck the wall beneath it.

The inner court smelled of smoke, blood, wet stone, and corruption.

Shields broke.

Tired men rotated forward because the men behind them were only slightly less tired.

Arrows diminished.

The barricade shifted backward one body-length at a time.

Holt came up himself.

Dust covered one side of his face.

Raigoro saw the answer before the engineer spoke.

”What moved?”

”The central brace is still carrying. The load it caught has shifted north.”

Holt pointed beneath the inner court.

”The north housing is moving.”

”Can you stop it?”

”Yes.”

Below them, the senior ward specialist and Ward Command were still managing the pressure through whatever structures Holt could keep standing.

An impact hit the court.

Holt caught the wall.

”If you give me ten minutes without a company standing directly above it.”

”You have five.”

Holt looked at him.

”That is not how stone works.”

Raigoro looked toward the line.

”Then take the ten.”

Holt went below.

The western ward light died.

Nobody stopped fighting.

A second went dark.

This time people noticed.

The station shook beneath their feet.

One soldier whispered something Raigoro did not hear.

The enemy pressed harder.

Raigoro looked toward the lower stair.

Nothing answered from below at first.

Then pale light returned beneath the stone.

The light was weak but stable. Another line answered, followed by the north conduit.

A runner came up the lower stair almost crawling.

”The network is carrying.”

Raigoro looked at him.

”Temporary?”

”Very.”

”Enough?”

The man smiled despite the blood on his face.

”Enough.”

The next stoneback hit the inner barrier.

The wall shuddered.

It stayed where it was.

Another creature struck behind the first and gained no ground.

Raigoro watched.

For hours, every heavy impact had cost Blackharrow something. Ground. Access to the lower works. Structural stability beneath the soldiers’ feet.

The work below had changed that.

Holt’s emergency bracing kept the housings physically stable while Ward Command kept the damaged network carrying pressure through them. The junction remained damaged, but the repaired load paths were holding well enough that the enemy could no longer make the battlefield collapse simply by driving more weight into the center.

The enemy had already committed as though collapse were inevitable.

Stonebacks crowded toward the central approach.

Ash hounds filled the spaces between them.

The creatures at the rear continued pushing because the front had spent hours finding ground every time it attacked.

Now there was nowhere for that pressure to go.

Raigoro looked toward the western edge of the formation.

The western edge had gone thin because too much of the enemy had shifted toward the center.

Captain Arven reached him.

”Hold?”

Raigoro pointed toward the western side.

”They committed too much to the center.”

Arven followed the line of his hand.

He understood.

Raigoro raised the signal horn.

”Now we move.”
