The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

RAIGORO’S POV

The battlefield left better evidence than the enemy intended.

With northern emergency status reduced, Daric transferred Citadel command to his standing deputy and reached the junction late the following day.

Raigoro had summoned him once the immediate military threat dropped enough for investigation to stop being a distraction.

Daric arrived with evidence clerks, sealed containers, and the expression of a man who had been given several hundred pieces of other people’s disaster to organize.

He looked at the broken southern wall.

”I preferred the archives.”

”No, you did not.”

”No.”

They began outside the ward markers.

The first evidence team found black resin on restraint chains attached to a dead corrupted creature.

Dark binding material visually consistent with the resin recovered after the road attack.

The samples were sealed separately and labeled by exact recovery point. Nobody was going to mix battlefield evidence merely because everyone already wanted it to match the material recovered earlier.

Daric approved.

”Good.”

A second team found feeding equipment in the lower valley.

The debris included metal trough pieces, heavy hooks, cut chain, and leather far too thick for ordinary livestock tack.

One feeding frame still held rotting meat treated with something that smelled bitter even through winter air.

Raigoro looked at the evidence clerk.

”Do not identify the compound here.”

The clerk nodded.

”Laboratory.”

Daric looked toward him.

”You are becoming Master Clair.”

”Unfortunate.”

They moved farther south.

Near the tree line where the largest formation had waited, investigators found reinforced wagon fittings, broad wheel-rim fragments, and a broken axle pin carrying a commercial maker’s stamp rather than a military mark.

Daric recorded it.

”Northline?”

”No mark yet.”

”Disappointing.”

”Useful.”

”Yes.”

One fragment of a copied station seal appeared near a discarded document case.

The seal itself had been broken.

The impression remained.

Blackharrow.

Wrong station.

The case had no reason to be on a creature battlefield.

Daric examined the broken seal again.

”Someone carried command-looking documentation with the handlers.”

”Or dropped material from another operation.”

”Yes.”

Neither conclusion was safe yet.

The evidence accumulated anyway.

The evidence now included black resin, feeding equipment, restraint components, transport hardware, copied seal material, metal tools carrying traces of blackened corruption compound, and one narrow applicator designed to force material into cracks or wounds.

Raigoro had seen enough.

The evidence was nowhere near enough to name whoever controlled the operation, but it was enough to establish that the creatures had not wandered into formation on their own.

Daric crouched beside a dead stoneback.

Old abrasion marks circled one rear limb.

”Restraint.”

”Probably.”

Daric looked up.

”Clair would object to probably.”

”No. Clair would record the abrasion and annoy us until someone qualified examined it.”

”Comforting.”

A field examiner later confirmed several recovered creatures carried marks consistent with prolonged physical restraint.

The marks did not identify who had restrained them, but they established that prolonged handling had occurred.

The investigations now overlapped across the road assassination after the Duchess’s wedding, the wounded patrol dragon, false ward deliveries, compromised junction hardware, and the Broken Ward attack.

Daric spread the evidence summary across a field table that evening.

”It is one network.”

Raigoro looked at him.

Daric corrected himself.

”One network or several groups sharing infrastructure.”

”Better.”

”I hate you.”

”No.”

”Occasionally.”

Raigoro looked through the supplier and transport marks.

Several crossed Blackharrow commercial systems.

Some crossed foreign trade.

A few touched Northline.

Others did not.

Real conspirators tended to disappoint historians.

Daric pointed toward one cross-Crown transport chain.

”Severin has opposed our access to some of these commercial systems.”

”Yes.”

”He may be protecting them.”

”Yes.”

”He may also be protecting Astevan sovereignty exactly as he claims.”

”Yes.”

Daric leaned back.

”You continue to make accusation unpleasant.”

”It should be.”

A king could be dangerous without being guilty of this particular attack.

Raigoro would not make political suspicion into evidence because doing so felt satisfying after a battle.

”Keep Severin on the board,” he said.

”Not in the conclusion.”

Daric nodded.

Exactly.

The immediate investigation lasted several days.

The last soldiers still unaccounted for after the fighting were found.

Four were found alive and two dead.

Final casualty lists arrived from all three positions.

North Spur’s after-action report confirmed that Kian Marr’s light detachment had reached the inner position before the final pressure broke. The longer route had cost time.

But it had delivered the company intact.

West Rime had lost part of its outer works.

North Spur required a new anchor assembly.

The junction required major reconstruction.

The first emergency replacements began before the army fully withdrew.

Blackharrow repaired while still counting the cost.

Vharos remained at the protected field recovery site under the field Dragon Healers through the first night.

He regained full consciousness the next morning.

He also attempted to stand sooner than the field team wanted.

Raigoro considered that encouraging, but the healers did not.

Master Clair and Healer Lou reached the recovery site with the later medical party on the second day, once the road was secure enough for the journey.

Clair’s Citadel report also explained Vharos’s departure.

He had refused combat clearance.

When Vharos moved toward the upper launch court anyway, the Dragonkeepers tried to turn him back.

Once it became clear he was going to launch and physically restraining him risked injuring him further, they stopped trying to hold him.

They fitted the lightest safety harness they could manage as harm reduction, cleared the launch court, and sent notice after him.

Master Clair had never cleared Vharos for combat or ordered him into battle. The keepers had simply failed to persuade him to stay once he decided to leave.

By the time Raigoro returned to the Citadel, Vharos remained at the protected field recovery site until Clair judged another flight safe.

Raigoro disliked leaving him.

Vharos was alive.

Blackharrow still required its Grand Duke somewhere other than beside one dragon’s bed.

The Citadel gates opened near evening.

No formal homecoming had been arranged.

The first people waiting were Command clerks.

Then medical officers.

Then household staff.

The Duchess stood beneath the covered walk beside Alma.

Raigoro found her immediately.

The Duchess checked his face, shoulders, and hands before some of the tension left her. Raigoro knew the inventory by now. She was looking for injuries.

He was becoming far too good at recognizing it.

The Duchess reached for her slate.

VHAROS?

”Alive.”

Her shoulders lowered.

”Conscious.”

Another change.

”Healer Lou says he is still in pain and not fit to fly.”

The Duchess nodded.

Then she looked at him again.

Raigoro waited.

The Duchess crossed the remaining distance between them.

At Rellan, she had taken one step toward him and stopped. Raigoro had seen it then and remembered it afterward.

This time she did not stop.

Her free hand came to the sleeve of his coat just below his elbow. No stumble put it there. No crowded table forced the contact. Her fingers rested against the dark wool while her eyes moved once more over him, as though the answer he had given from several feet away had not been sufficient.

Raigoro stayed still.

She kept her hand on his sleeve instead of immediately taking it back.

Then her chalk moved in her other hand.

YOU?

”I am also alive.”

His wife stared at him.

He remembered the slate in her office before he left.

COME BACK.

He had.

Her eyes dropped briefly to his mouth before she returned to the slate.

That happened often enough now that pretending neither of them noticed had become its own form of conversation.

His wife wrote:

THAT WAS NOT A MEDICAL REPORT.

Raigoro almost smiled.

”No.”

She waited.

”No significant injury.”

That satisfied her.

Mostly.

Vharos and Raigoro.

The relief belonged to both.

His wife no longer appeared interested in pretending otherwise.

Daric entered the lower court behind the last command wagon.

An archive clerk met him before he crossed halfway.

”Commander.”

Daric stopped.

The clerk carried three sealed packets.

”Foreign archive responses. They arrived while you were away.”

Raigoro looked toward the packets, and his wife did the same.

She could not see the labels from where she stood.

Daric could.

Merovia.

Another contained a newly authenticated older religious index from the archive whose later household copy had previously proved derivative.

A foreign diplomatic collection filed under Queen Elara.

The requests were old.

Some had been sent before the Winter Muster.

One had been redirected twice.

Another had required authentication.

The requests had been in motion for months. Their arrival had nothing to do with the battle ending; Blackharrow had simply been too occupied surviving to deal with them sooner.

Daric looked at Raigoro.

”The old investigation.”

His wife stopped beside him. Raigoro saw the change but did not ask why in the middle of a courtyard.

Daric carried the packets to the Command Archive.

Raigoro joined him after the immediate return reports were transferred.

The Merovian package came first.

Three seals had to be verified before Daric opened the outer wrapping.

Inside lay witnessed copies from an old Blackharrow embassy collection transferred decades earlier, including records created during Queen Elara’s lifetime and before the modern succession records Raigoro no longer trusted.

Daric sat.

For months, Daric had worked through damaged pages, derivative copies, missing registers, dead witnesses, transferred collections, and records created too late to prove anything useful about Elara’s household.

Now, an authenticated document created before the erasure lay in front of him.

He opened the first register.

Raigoro stood across the table.

Daric began reading.

Then stopped.

”What?”

Daric looked up.

”This royal household list has two daughters.”
