The Dragon Warlord's Silent Bride

DIANA’S POV

The order had reached North Spur before Blackharrow knew West Rime was cracking.

Diana disliked that before she read a single line.

The document itself made the problem worse because it looked convincing. It carried everything an emergency transfer order should possess: a priority seal, ward designation, material quantity, receiving location, Regional Command authorization line, and the expected urgency language.

A clerk could read it in less than a minute and begin moving stone before the next message arrived.

Diana read it four times.

Daric stood beside the table.

”You are making the document nervous.”

Diana ignored him.

Raigoro remained at Command Terrace while the mobilization continued. He had sent the order to her because North Spur had received it under Regional Command authority.

Regional Command denied sending it.

Therefore everyone already knew the order was false.

Raigoro had already sent a Dragon Host courier carrying a hold order to North Spur.

Nobody was waiting for Diana to decide whether the ward should obey.

Her question was narrower.

Why had trained military clerks believed the false order belonged inside the system?

She compared the document with two legitimate emergency requisitions.

The structure, wording, and priority placement all matched legitimate emergency requisitions. The false order was very good.

Diana moved to older examples.

Alma brought another archive box.

Master Marlon remained in Household Relief, where the actual civilian work had not stopped merely because military papers had become interesting.

A logistics clerk helped Diana navigate requisition categories.

She compared code after code.

Nothing.

Daric left once to receive a field report.

Returned.

Diana kept reading.

The quantity requested made sense.

The route made sense.

Even the transfer destination made sense.

That was the danger.

If West Rime was cracking, moving North Spur’s reserve toward it looked responsible.

Diana imagined a clerk receiving the order while messengers reported a real emergency.

Would he stop to question whether the Grand Duke had personally approved it? Probably not. He would see Regional Command on the correct form, with the correct seal and the correct material, and people would move.

That was what emergency paperwork was designed to accomplish.

Speed.

The person who forged this understood that too.

Diana flipped back through the oldest requisition bundle.

A code in the upper right corner caught her attention: WR-4.

She looked at the false order.

WR-4.

Then at the two current orders beside it.

WR-6.

Diana pulled the older page closer.

”Found something?” Alma asked.

Diana held up one finger.

She checked another document from several months earlier.

WR-4.

Another.

WR-5.

Then the newer system.

WR-6.

She turned to the logistics clerk and pointed.

WHEN DID THIS CHANGE?

He read the codes.

”Early winter.”

WHY?

”Requisition categories were consolidated after the autumn audit.”

Diana pointed toward WR-4.

”Old ward-repair emergency transfer.”

Then WR-6.

”Current combined defensive-material transfer.”

She looked at the false order again.

The format was current.

The requisition code was not.

Someone had assembled the document using pieces from different periods.

Diana wrote: THIS CODE IS OLD.

The clerk went still.

”How old?”

”Three months out of use.”

Daric came closer.

”Could North Spur still have old forms?”

The clerk nodded slowly.

”Blank stock should have been destroyed or returned.”

Should.

A dangerous word.

Diana looked at the false order.

The person who made it had access to a current-looking template.

But somewhere in their reference material, WR-4 remained correct.

They knew Blackharrow bureaucracy, but their knowledge was imperfect in exactly the same way as the false receiving marks: they understood the system without possessing current human detail.

Diana wrote: SAME KIND OF MISTAKE.

Daric nodded.

”The receipts used real men without knowing where they were. This uses a real procedure without knowing the code changed.”

Alma asked, ”Same person?”

Daric answered, ”Same limitation.”

Better.

Diana agreed.

She wrote: WHO STILL HAS OLD COPIES?

The logistics clerk began listing possibilities.

External contractors whose files had not been updated.

Remote warehouses.

Former procurement offices.

Foreign treaty partners.

Commercial brokers.

Northline.

Diana looked up.

Daric had reached the same point.

”Northline would have received the new code notice.”

The clerk hesitated.

”Yes.”

”Every office?”

”Central office definitely. Secondary contractors should have received it through revised procurement instructions.”

Should again.

Daric sent for Northline’s administrative-update receipt.

Commercial records produced it from the Citadel archive later that afternoon.

Northline central office had received the revised codes.

Signed.

Filed.

Central receipt proved only that the update reached Northline. It said nothing about which secondary offices or contractors were still using older copies.

Diana compared the update date with the three forged shipment routes.

All three false deliveries had occurred after the code change.

The transfer order strengthened the pattern.

Whoever prepared the documents was copying Blackharrow from information that did not stay current with the people and procedures inside it.

Diana returned to North Spur’s original acknowledgment.

RESERVE WARDSTONE PREPARING FOR MOVEMENT.

The false order had reached them early enough that the station had already begun staging the transfer before Blackharrow caught it.

Whether Veyr’s courier had reached North Spur yet, they did not know.

Diana looked at the departure time written on the original order.

Whoever sent it had not merely copied Blackharrow’s procedures.

They had known when those procedures would become believable.

Diana looked toward the map on the wall.

West Rime.

North Spur.

Two neighboring defensive positions.

One genuinely weak because repair materials had vanished.

One still strong because the false order had been caught before its reserve left.

She wrote: WHY WEAKEN BOTH?

Daric looked at the words.

”That is the question.”

Diana stared at the map.

If someone merely wanted West Rime to fail, moving North Spur’s reserve toward it would help West Rime.

Unless the stone never reached West Rime either.

Possible.

If someone wanted to steal more wardstone, an emergency transfer created another opportunity.

Also possible.

But the timing bothered her.

The order arrived exactly when West Rime began reporting visible fractures.

Whoever sent it either learned about the crisis very quickly or expected it.

Diana wrote: HOW DID THEY KNOW WEST RIME NEEDED HELP?

Daric did not answer.

Alma looked from him to Diana.

Daric stopped over the order.

West Rime’s crisis was real. The forged order had arrived early enough to use that real crisis as its justification. Whoever sent it had been ready before Blackharrow was.

Daric took the order and Diana’s code comparison back to Command Terrace.

Diana followed as far as the permitted review boundary.

Raigoro came out.

Daric handed him the documents.

”Obsolete code.”

Raigoro read the comparison.

”How obsolete?”

”Three months.”

”Could be copied from older records.”

”Yes.”

Diana handed Raigoro her slate.

SAME LIMITATION AS RECEIPTS.

He read it.

”Correct system. Outdated detail.”

She nodded.

Raigoro looked back through the command door toward the restricted map room.

From Diana’s position at the permitted boundary, she could not read the operational map inside.

Diana wrote: YOU THINK NORTH SPUR WILL BE ATTACKED.

Raigoro looked at her.

”Possibly.”

She waited.

”Or someone wants me to think that.”

Of course.

There was always another possibility with him.

Usually because there actually was another possibility.

Diana looked toward the mobilization court below.

Soldiers were already preparing to move.

Engineers.

Supply teams.

Medical wagons.

Raigoro had two positions now.

One visibly failing.

One someone had tried to weaken.

Raigoro read Diana’s code comparison once more.

”The Dragon Host courier carries the real order.”

Daric nodded.

”Hold reserve. Verify all emergency transfers directly through Command.”

”Yes.”

Raigoro looked at North Spur’s ordinary administrative acknowledgment.

”This stays in the normal record.”

Diana looked at him.

Daric understood first.

”Whoever sent the forged order may be watching whether the system rejects it.”

”Exactly.”

”So the open paperwork continues to show North Spur preparing the transfer.”

”Until I know who reacts.”

Diana wrote: THE STONE DOES NOT ACTUALLY MOVE.

”No.”

Good.

Raigoro was lying to the paperwork.

Diana found that unexpectedly satisfying.

A staging horn sounded from the lower court.

Diana looked toward the window.

Engineer teams were moving.

Supply clerks were sealing northern orders.

Horses stood beneath the covered walk while the first military units prepared to leave ahead of the Grand Duke.

Raigoro was not among them yet.

Diana looked back at the false order.

Then at its timestamp.

Her chalk moved.

THEY DID NOT REACT TO WEST RIME.

Daric looked at the time again.

”No.”

Diana wrote one more line.

THEY WERE READY FOR IT.

This time, Daric did not correct her.
