How can anyone sleep on that!”

Xu Tangge’s eyes widened, then a look of embarrassment appeared on her face, and she said somewhat shamefully, “How about we move the bed from the opposite room over here?”

“It’s all right, it’s just a few wooden boards.

I have a tough build; I can endure it!

Come on in…

It’s just a mouse, look how scared you are!”

Lin Tian shook his head slightly, opened the door, and stepped inside, fetching two long benches from the corner of the room while speaking, “Think about it, when I was little, I even slept on the floor!”

The long benches, unique to the countryside, were homemade, with legs splayed out wide at both ends, extremely stable on the ground.

Lin Tian brought over several large wooden boards to place on top, then added a cooling mat and blankets.

A makeshift bed was set up at one end of the original large bed.

At that moment.

Xu Tangge finally shuffled in.

“Alright, we’ve had a long day of travel, so let’s hit the sack!”

After closing the door, Lin Tian turned back, worried that Xu Tangge was still uneasy, he simply lay down first and covered his head with the blanket.

Only when he heard Xu Tangge rustling around and the sound of the light being switched off did Lin Tian breathe a sigh of relief.

City girls are so hard to please!

Sighing silently to himself, Lin Tian pushed back the blanket over his head, staring into the pitch-dark night.

From behind the village mountains, there occasionally came the ugly, grating calls of birds.

Those familiar yet unfamiliar bird cries made Lin Tian think of his childhood when his parents weren’t home and he slept at night by curling up and covering his head.

He was always afraid that something would crawl through the little wooden window in his house, perhaps a mountain ghost dragging her long hair, lunging at him.

As a child, the elders would often say that the grotesque birds from the back mountain were the “Soul Sending Birds” raised by the mountain ghosts, bearing ill fortune, and that it was best to stay away.

Since then, Lin Tian had gradually developed a sense of reverence and fear towards those sounds.

Whenever he heard them, he would get goosebumps.

However,

as he grew older, he understood that it was nothing more than an old wives’ tale; there was nothing to be afraid of.

And regarding these bird calls, Lin Tian had heard them in his past life too.

But back then, he didn’t have a warm home or relatives, just himself curled up alone at a street corner, or huddled in a nook, watching the lights in homes go off one by one while listening to the strange bird calls slicing through the sky.

All the loneliness and fear turned into hunger, which was the only thing he longed for, just to fill his belly!

As Lin Tian’s thoughts wandered between his past and present lives, a voice came from the large bed next to him.

“Lin Tian, are you asleep?”

Xu Tangge’s voice was very low, tinged with a trace of nervousness and hesitation.

Lin Tian thought Xu Tangge had already fallen asleep and said in surprise, “I’m not asleep!

Are you uncomfortable, can’t sleep?”

“It’s not that, I’m a bit…”

In the dark, Xu Tangge shook her head and replied.

But, before she could finish, she suddenly screamed.

“There’s something inside my clothes…”

The scream was followed by Lin Tian quickly getting up, turning on the light, and at that time, Xu Tangge was jumping and screaming on the bed.

Then she turned pale and jumped onto the wooden board bed where Lin Tian was.

“Lin Tian…

there’s…

there’s something!

It feels like a caterpillar crawled inside my clothes!”

Xu Tangge hugged herself, her voice trembling as she called out.

“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid…

Let me look!”

Lin Tian quickly offered words of comfort, searched around, and found no caterpillar.

Then, his eyes fell on Xu Tangge’s clothes.

Lin Tian coughed lightly and quickly went over, flipping her clothes inside out for inspection, and indeed, he found a little bug.

But, it was only a rice grain-sized weevil.

“Look, it’s all right now, it was just a weevil, see how scared you got!”

After disposing of the bug, Lin Tian turned back to comfort Xu Tangge, and then he crawled back under the blanket first.

After all, he was only wearing his undergarments, so it wasn’t appropriate to just stand around outside.
