I Am Not A Goblin Slayer

Chapter 226: Chapter 189: Goblin Slayer’s Growing Fame

A fence that isn’t very high may not be able to stop large demons, but for small goblins and kobolds, it can provide some protection and early warning.

At the gate of the village entrance, two young men held simple spears, guarding the entrance.

From afar, they saw Gauss riding a chocobo and his Half-Snake Man companion, their faces lighting up with delight.

As Gauss slowly steered the chocobo towards the gate, their expressions had not yet fully subsided, which Gauss noticed.

A trace of curiosity flashed in his heart.

”Hello, my companion and I are the adventurers who accepted this mission. Please open the gate for us. Here are our commission papers and...”

”Goblin Slayer, we’ve heard of you!”

”Hm?” Gauss looked at the excited young villagers, a bit flustered.

The strange title appeared again!

Besides the confusion, he was also somewhat curious.

If it was in a small place like Gray Rock Town, where there aren’t many adventurers, being given such a title could make sense.

But how is it that even in this remote village near Barry City, people have begun to recognize him?

It shouldn’t be, right?

Is it possible that Barry City had an old ”Goblin Slayer,” and he’s been mistaken for him?

Yes, that could be true!

”Did you guys mistake me for someone else?”

As they opened the gate for him, he asked the question on his mind.

”I just arrived near Barry.”

”No mistake, it’s you. The handsome mage in the black robe, the chocobo, and the Half-Snake Man companion, you don’t have to be modest, we have all heard of your reputation. By the way, your name is Gauss, right?”

Listening to the young villagers list out all the matching traits, Gauss initially thought it could be someone else, two teams with the same configuration—a small probability but not zero. But when they mentioned his name, his heart finally settled.

No doubt, it really was him.

When did he become this ”famous”?

He had no idea at all!

”Yes, I am Gauss.” Gauss nodded helplessly. ”If convenient, would you tell me how you know about me?”

”Well, at the village tavern.” The two young villagers didn’t hesitate to tell Gauss directly. ”Just a couple of days ago, a passing caravan talked about your exploits.”

”A caravan? Where did they hear about me from?”

”That I don’t know. These small caravans often do business in various villages, maybe they heard about your fame from another village.” The young man looked at Gauss with a hint of admiration. ”They say wherever you go, the evil green-skinned goblins can’t hide, all of them died by your hand.”

Unlike in Gray Rock Town, where other professionals used it to deride and mock Gauss,

As ordinary villagers, the most common monster threat they face comes from goblins; most villagers don’t have much real sense of the legendary creatures like giant dragons, devils, and giants, as they are too far from real life.

But goblins are indeed a visible threat.

A professional who ignores the myriad of precious treasures in dungeons, but instead tirelessly kills goblins, kobolds, and other monsters threatening the common villages, regardless of the scale, this spirit can’t help but move people.

Moreover, the presence of a Half-Snake Man teammate itself also adds more memorability and recognition to the team.

For a time, his fame subtly spread among the countryside outside Barry City.

Gauss listened to the young villagers’ endless chatter.

Vaguely, he sensed some kind of boosting.

Though he indeed accepted many normal tasks during this time, it’s not as great as they say.

The reason he didn’t explore the maze was that he was waiting for Aaliyah to return from her retreat.

And later, the rhythm of adventure activities with a mix of maze-exploration and commission-execution would continue.

He wouldn’t just become a specialist killer for small monsters.

Because collecting treasures and special monster species is easier in mazes.

Besides the kill total, he also wants to expand his illustrated book by hunting more different new monster species.

Is someone putting a tall hat on me? Are they building me up? Who is it? What’s the purpose?

Gauss couldn’t quite understand.

And why ”Goblin Slayer”?

At the moment, there’s no proof, just a vague suspicion in his heart, so after a brief struggle, he put it aside.

”Uncle, the Goblin Slayer is here! Those monsters are doomed!”

”Oh wow, so this is the Goblin Slayer. He’s really handsome.”

Walking along the country dirt road, listening to the ongoing discussions around him, Gauss felt a bit embarrassed.

But seeing the genuine anticipation in others, he couldn’t ignore it.

Perhaps, what he didn’t find a troublesome small monster, is indeed quite a concern for many ordinary villagers?

For the villagers, perhaps the world doesn’t need a giant dragon slayer, but absolutely needs a goblin buster!

After hesitating for a moment, Gauss still waved toward the crowd, as a response to their welcome.

”Captain, you’re really popular,” Serdur rarely teased with a wink.

”...”

Gauss fell into silence.

Not sure if he should agree.

Although for a Level 2 Professional, he indeed possesses quite a ”reputation,” whether good or bad, but it’s only limited to these small villages; in Barry City, he’s still an unknown ordinary adventurer.

Is this considered popularity? He was not sure.

It seemed that for some inexplicable reason, people had decided on this title for him.

Though he didn’t mind it, it did leave him with complicated feelings.

This complexity wasn’t because at the moment, being a low-level professional and having a ”title,” is an achievement and recognition from others.

However, he didn’t think he’d stay at the low-level professional stage for his whole life, which made him slightly worried.
