Chapter 304: Chapter 300: Selection

Another woman beside her quickly helped her up and said, ”Why talk about dying? So many of us are here with you, what’s there to be afraid of?”

Huang Tao glanced down at her. He had seen her a few times, somewhat familiar but couldn’t call her name. There were too many people in the compound, and he couldn’t remember everyone.

Huang Tao didn’t care at all, kept his gaze straight, and continued, ”Not to lie to you, most of you will basically turn into zombies, just like everyone else in this world... but there’s not no chance at all.”

The only chance might be becoming an Extraordinary, something everyone can think of, and it was for this reason that hundreds to thousands of people died yesterday.

Chang Yi stood aside watching, feeling heavy-hearted. He knew how difficult it was to become an Extraordinary, even now he still wasn’t one.

Huang Tao paused and continued, ”You will be transferred to the front-line battle team afterwards, to find every opportunity to become an Extraordinary.”

The people showing signs of mutation had unexpectedly strong energy, didn’t need sleep, their endurance comparable to Extraordinary, and required relatively less food.

They were actually stronger than Ordinary People, in a way, evolved humans, stronger humans.

Although Huang Tao seemed indifferent, it instead calmed these people a bit; at least it sounded honest and aligned with what the compound did.

A middle-aged man with deep wrinkles on his forehead raised his hand and said, ”Does merely fighting enable us to become Extraordinary?”

Huang Tao glanced at him, smiled slightly, and said, ”Of course not, but it helps, it’s a necessary condition. You should be grateful to be in this compound.”

He paused and continued, ”You’re also quite lucky, even if you haven’t been strengthened, you can participate in the ceremony afterwards.”

Ceremony?

Many showed signs of ecstasy, knowing that most of the Extraordinary in the compound were born after that ceremony.

The middle-aged man was momentarily stunned, then asked again, ”Do we zombies also have a chance to participate in the ceremony?”

Huang Tao nodded and said, ”Yes, it’s Leader Su’s decision, thinking that you zombies might have a better chance to become Extraordinary.”

Easier to become Extraordinary?

The middle-aged man slightly widened his eyes, thinking this wasn’t something to say lightly. Indeed, there was a connection between zombies and Extraordinary.

He always wondered what the so-called Extraordinary was all about, thinking he might also become one, but now he was about to become a zombie without becoming one.

Huang Tao gestured with his hand and said, ”Chang Yi, you take them for screening first, the number has increased, just need half to stay.”

Chang Yi nodded, stepped forward, and said to the crowd, ”Follow me, be quiet, and try not to cause any trouble.”

The group followed Chang Yi toward a relatively low building on the edge of the compound.

Halfway there, Chang Yi looked back at the middle-aged man, smiled, and said, ”You are Zhang Shun’s second uncle, Zhang Chuanwen?”

The middle-aged man was momentarily stunned and said, ”Yes, is there a problem?”

Chang Yi nodded and said, ”Nothing much, we are all members of Team A and get along quite well. Just happened to talk about him having a second uncle in the compound.”

Zhang Chuanwen felt a little puzzled, not expecting this kid to be reliable at such a crucial time, which was... not easy.

Entering a separate room in the building, Chang Yi took a few people to check the specific situation of those mutating and said:

”Brother Qiang, those with obvious signs of mutation should be eliminated first. They are likely to turn into zombies soon, so it’s unnecessary.”

Ye Yongqiang nodded, smiled, and said, ”So those severely mutated need to be killed?”

Chang Yi glanced at him and said plainly, ”No need, just expel them from the base, no need to kill them.”

Ye Yongqiang thought for a moment and said, ”True, that seems to be the most reasonable practice, and very humane... those with mild symptoms can participate in the ceremony.”

Then he pointed ahead and shouted, ”Line up in front of me, take off your coats, and wait for inspection.”

Chang Yi stepped forward, grabbed the first person’s head with one hand, and lifted his eyelid with the other to observe the condition of his eyeball.

Zombies’ eyeballs are completely different from normal humans, blood-red, made up of blood threads, and emit a faint glow, visible in the dark night.

”Mm, you stand to the left.”

Chang Yi’s face had no expression whatsoever, gesturing behind him as he spoke.

The person glanced at Chang Yi’s expression and quickly walked behind him, wondering if standing to the left meant passing or failing.

”You go to the left too.”

Ye Yongqiang also shouted, ”Next one.”

The number of those mutated wasn’t many, around forty to fifty, so the inspection didn’t last long.

The number of people standing on the left and right was about the same, Zhang Chuanwen stood on the right.

The previously crying woman looked at Zhang Chuanwen and said, ”Uncle Zhang, does being on this side mean we can participate in the ceremony?”

Zhang Chuanwen looked across and mumbled, ”Probably, Sun Nan, who shows the most signs of mutation, is over there.”

After the inspection, Chang Yi looked at the people on both sides and said, ”Those on the left, follow Captain Qiang out first.”

Ye Yongqiang turned and looked at them, grinning, ”Follow us, if anyone tries anything, don’t blame me for being rude.”

Seven or eight armed individuals followed behind, encapsulating these people in the middle, as if treating criminals.

Gradually, the hall quieted down again.

Chang Yi glanced at his phone, thought for a moment, and said, ”Don’t be nervous, rest here for a while, the ceremony should start in half an hour. Ha, maybe some of you will become Extraordinary?”

Becoming an Extraordinary is quite a mystical matter; even he seemed very close to it but still might not become one.

Zhang Chuanwen touched some ”spots” on his face, stepped forward, and said, ”Captain Chang Yi, do you think any of us can become Extraordinary?”

”Any?”

Chang Yi showed a disdainful smile and said bluntly, ”Appearing one would be remarkable enough, but who can say for sure, perhaps only Leader Su knows.”

Zhang Chuanwen looked worried, not happy about joining the ceremony, continued saying:

”At this rate, it won’t take a few days before a large number of people show signs of mutation. Will only the Extraordinary survive in the end?”

Chang Yi stared at him silently and said, ”Don’t know.”
