Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

”It’s been almost an hour,” Boran said, ducking under a low branch, his voice carrying the particular strain of someone who’d been walking too long without saying what was actually bothering him. ”How far did he even chase whatever it was.”

”That’s the thing,” Kelvin said, matching pace beside Diana, his voice tight in a way that had nothing to do with the terrain. ”Noah’s fast. Genuinely fast, void blink puts him past almost anything I’ve ever clocked. Lucas might edge him in a straight sprint, and Storm obviously, but on foot, chasing something visually, there shouldn’t be anything out here that outpaces him long enough to drag this into an hour.”

”Unless it wasn’t outrunning him,” Diana said. ”Unless it was leading him.”

Kelvin didn’t answer that right away, which was its own kind of answer.

They pushed on through undergrowth that had grown thornier the deeper they went, the canopy overhead closing tighter again after the brief relief of the last clearing, and Priya walked a few paces ahead with her scanner up, sweeping slow, methodical arcs across the ground and the tree line both.

”There,” she said, stopping.

The rest of the group closed in around her. Half-buried in root and leaf litter sat a length of rope, synthetic, weathered but clearly manufactured, coiled around the base of a tree in a configuration that looked deliberate, a snare mechanism gone slack after whatever it had once caught was long gone.

”Another trap,” Wren said quietly.

”Older than the pit,” Priya said, examining the fibers. ”Years, maybe. This one’s actually decayed properly.”

”So there’s been human activity out here for longer than any of us assumed,” Kelvin said, crouching beside her. ”Not just a recent crew. Multiple waves, probably, over a long stretch.”

They kept moving, and the evidence kept accumulating, small and specific rather than repetitive, each piece adding a different angle instead of restating the last one. A hand-carved marker notched into a tree trunk, the kind hunters left to track a return path, its edges softened by years of growth trying to swallow it. A rusted canteen half-buried near a dry creek bed. Further on, unmistakably, a section of what had once been a proper campsite, fire-scarred stones arranged in a ring, the char long gone cold and grown over with moss.

”This wasn’t a single expedition,” Priya said, crouching at the ring of stones, running her fingers along one blackened edge. ”This was a settlement. Or close to one. People who stayed.”

”For how long,” Diana said.

”I don’t know,” Priya said. ”Long enough to build a fire ring instead of just scorching the ground and moving on. Long enough that whoever did this planned to come back to this exact spot.”

Kelvin stood slowly, looking around at the canopy pressing close on every side, the humidity thick enough to taste, and something in his expression had shifted into the particular stillness he got when a theory was assembling itself faster than he could speak it out loud.

”This place is restricted EDF territory,” he said. ”Has been for years. Officially uninhabitable, officially unmapped past the outer fringe. No sanctioned expeditions, no licensed hunting parties, nothing.” He looked at the fire ring. ”And even outside official restriction, seasoned hunters avoid basins like this one specifically. Not because of any single threat classification. Because of density. It doesn’t matter how strong you are individually if the ecosystem itself is stacked this thick. Any group gets overwhelmed eventually, just from sheer volume.”

”So who’s been camping here,” Boran said.

”That’s the question,” Priya said, standing, brushing moss from her fingers.

They walked in silence for a while after that, the group’s pace slowing without anyone calling for it, everyone’s attention split between the path ahead and whatever pieces they were each quietly turning over.

”The claw marks,” Wren said suddenly, stopping near a wide trunk scored deep with parallel gouges. ”Look at these.”

The group gathered around it. Four distinct sets of marks, overlapping, layered across each other at different heights and angles, each one clearly belonging to a different creature entirely.

”That’s wrong,” Priya said, frowning, crouching to examine the lowest set. ”Territorial species don’t share ground like this. Not this closely, not this consistently. If four separate apex predators were marking the same tree, one of them should have driven the others off within days.”

”Unless they’re not competing for the same territory,” Kelvin said slowly. ”Unless something’s organizing them instead.”

Priya looked up at him.

”Go on,” she said.

”Beasts aren’t the only things susceptible to void saturation,” Kelvin said, thinking it through as he spoke, the words arriving faster than he could fully vet them. ”That’s the whole premise behind the surge Priya’s been tracking for months. Concentrated exposure changes biology, given enough time, given enough proximity to a source.” He gestured at the claw marks. ”What if this basin isn’t just producing stronger individual beasts. What if it’s been running long enough, saturated deep enough, that it’s actually assembled something like an ecosystem. A real food chain. Apex species that don’t compete because there’s enough structure underneath them to support all of them without collision.”

”That would explain the density everyone avoids,” Priya said, standing fast now, her own excitement bleeding into her voice despite everything unsettling underneath the theory. ”It’s not chaos. It’s not just a lot of strong things randomly stacked on top of each other. It’s a stable pyramid. Which means something at the very top of it has been shaping the whole structure, deliberately or not, for however long this saturation’s been running.”

”And if void energy reshapes beasts that thoroughly,” Kelvin said, ”given enough exposure, enough time—”

”It could do the same to people,” Priya finished.

They stood there for a second, the theory sitting heavy between them, both of their brains clearly still racing ahead into implications neither had said out loud yet.

”Okay, lab coats,” Diana said, arms crossed, watching them with something between amusement and genuine unease. ”You two just solved our mystery.”

Kelvin blinked, coming back to himself.

”There,” Diana said, nodding past them, toward the dark space between two massive trunks ahead. ”That’s what Noah’s chasing.”

The group turned as one.

A pair of yellow eyes hung in the shadow between the trunks, unblinking, fixed directly on them.

Nobody moved for a second.

Then more eyes appeared, spreading outward from the first pair, low to the ground and high in the branches both, a dozen of them, then more, emerging from cover that had clearly been holding still around the group for longer than any of them wanted to think about.

”Scanners aren’t reading category,” Priya said, tablet up, voice tight. ”Something’s there, definitely something with a real energy signature, but I can’t classify it.”

”We don’t need classification,” Diana said, shield already forming around her arm. ”We need distance from that tree line, right now.”

It was already too late.

The nearest shape sprang.

It cleared the distance in a single leap, faster than anything that size should have moved, and Kelvin’s four arms deployed in the same instant, gold-plated limbs unfolding from his spine in a rapid mechanical bloom, each one already shifting configuration mid-motion.

”There,” Kelvin said, voice sharpening with sudden clarity as the shape landed close enough to see properly, fur matted and dark, eyes glowing pale yellow, movements carrying an unmistakable, deliberate discipline underneath the raw speed. ”That’s it. That’s what took Noah this far. I see it now.”

The first Beastman opened its mouth and sprayed.

A fine mist erupted outward, acrid and thick, and it hit half the group before anyone could react, eyes streaming instantly, throats closing around coughs that tore up ragged and violent.

”MASKS,” Kelvin shouted, and two of his four arms shifted instantly, plating folding and reforming with Instant Assembly cycling fast, gold fibers weaving together into thin filtration units that snapped onto his own face and, a half second later, onto Diana’s, Priya’s, Wren’s, thrown across the gap between them with startling accuracy.

”Not everyone,” Priya coughed, already reaching for the two younger Dreamers still doubled over, eyes streaming, throats raw.

More Beastmen closed in from every side.

A tall, lean one dropped from the canopy directly behind Boran, and before he could turn, spines erupted from its back in a sudden violent burst, launching outward in a wide fan. Boran caught two across the shoulder, roaring in pain, staggering back into a tree.

Diana’s shield came up between two more attackers, the Living Reef hardening across its surface, and she took a hit hard enough to drive her back a full step, the creature’s fist carrying strength that shouldn’t have belonged to something built from a human frame at all.

”Shade,” she called, breathing hard through the filter mask. ”Stay airborne. Don’t attack yet, something doesn’t feel right,”

Shade’s amber eyes flicked to her from where he circled low above the canopy gap, and something in his posture shifted, reluctant, but he climbed higher instead of diving in, holding position.

Kelvin moved through the fight with all four arms working independently, one deploying a short-range disruptor pulse that staggered a charging Beastman mid-leap, another catching a spine strike meant for Wren and deflecting it with a hardened plate, the third reconfiguring into a grappling clamp that seized a smaller attacker by the wrist and flung it clear, the fourth already scanning, cataloguing, feeding data back through his spine in real time.

”They’re using real technique,” he called out, ducking a swipe from a broad-shouldered Beastman that moved with the precise economy of trained hand-to-hand combat rather than pure animal aggression. ”This isn’t instinct. Somebody taught them this. These things are somewhat human.”

A spine-shooter caught Priya across the forearm, and she cried out, dropping her tablet, stumbling back into a tree hard enough to knock the wind from her.

Wren shifted mid-fight, form dissolving into something faster, lower, tearing into the flank of the nearest attacker, but two more converged on her position immediately, and even shifted she couldn’t hold ground against three at once, claws raking across her side deep enough to force her back to human form, gasping.

The fight kept collapsing inward, every small victory bought at a cost that compounded faster than the group could recover from it. Boran went down first, three of them dogpiling his massive frame at once, dragging him under despite his strength, his roars fading into something more strained.

”Boran!” Wren screamed, and turned to help, and that half second of distraction cost her, a fist catching her across the temple hard enough to drop her where she stood.

Diana fought on, shield taking hits from repeated strikes, Tidal Rebound firing back everything she absorbed, but for every one she drove off, two more pressed in from angles she couldn’t cover.

”Diana,” Kelvin shouted, three of his arms damaged now, sparking, one bent at an angle that shouldn’t have been possible, still fighting anyway. ”Fall back, get clear—”

A Beastman closed on her from behind, and she spun to meet it, but her legs buckled a half second before contact, the accumulated damage finally catching up all at once, and she hit the ground hard, shield fizzling out around her arm.

”NO—”

Kelvin fought alone after that, all four arms still moving, still fighting with everything the Auxiliary Assistant could produce, Foundry Protocol flickering at the edge of activation before a heavy strike caught him square in the chest and sent him tumbling backward through underbrush, his fourth arm finally sparking dead.

He got up once.

They didn’t let him get up a second time.

The clearing settled into an eerie stillness, the Beastmen gathering around the fallen team with the same disciplined patience Noah had already witnessed from the ones who’d taken him, no wasted violence now that resistance had actually stopped.

High above the canopy, unseen, unmasked, Shade circled once, twice, watching everything with pale amber eyes that missed nothing at all, and did not come down.
