Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

Back on a planet where the sun always shone, warm and constant across skies that had never once carried a storm cloud in living memory, every face turned up toward that same sun now carried something the light itself couldn’t touch.

Months had passed since the ships came down. Salvation hadn’t come with them, and it hadn’t come since.

The Vel’kai workers moved through mining tunnels in long lines, three-legged bodies bent low under the weight of ore sacks, single eyes fixed on the ground because looking up cost time and time cost pain. The air down here tasted like metal and old smoke. Overhead lamps threw a sickly yellow light across walls carved wider every month since the occupation began, tunnels branching deeper into the crust with each new quota handed down from somewhere none of them had ever seen.

Sek enforcers stood at checkpoints between sections, counting sacks as they passed, marking numbers on tablets bolted to the rock. A worker stumbled near the third checkpoint, her sack splitting open, ore scattering across the tunnel floor. She dropped to her knees fast, scooping it back in with shaking hands. The enforcer nearest her didn’t move to help. Didn’t move to punish her either. Just watched.

Above ground, the processing yards ran without stopping, day folding into night folding into day again with no difference between them anymore. Furnaces the size of buildings turned raw ore into refined plating, poured and cooled and stamped with the same insignia hanging over every district now, a vertical line cut by a horizontal one, repeated on so many surfaces that nobody’s eyes caught on it anymore.

Weapons came off a separate line. Blasters. Armor plating. Housing for something bigger that hadn’t been assembled yet but had clearly been built for scale, meant to carry more than one soldier. Rows of it stacked and waiting, more than any single garrison could ever need.

One walked through the yard without an escort.

He didn’t need one. Workers who saw him coming stopped whatever they were doing before anyone told them to, heads lowering, the whole line going still. He didn’t look at any of them directly. Didn’t need to.

A Sek administrator met him near the central furnace, tablet in hand, falling into step half a pace behind rather than beside him.

”Production is ahead of schedule, sire,” the administrator said. ”The southern line hits full output within the week.”

”Good,” One said.

”There’s a question about the eastern quota. The workforce there is thinning faster than projected. If output stays the priority, we may need to redistribute from the mining sector.”

One thought about that for the length of six more steps.

”Pull from the northern settlements instead,” he said. ”Leave the mining sector alone. Ore comes before weapons. Weapons come before soldiers. Break that order and everything after it breaks too.”

”Understood.”

”The fifth line,” One said. ”The one building the housing units. Who authorized the delay.”

The administrator’s steps hitched. ”The engineer flagged a structural concern, sire. The frame wasn’t holding tolerance at the scale requested.”

”Then fix the tolerance,” One said. ”Don’t delay the line.”

”Yes, sire.”

They kept walking. Neither said anything else until they reached the edge of the yard, where a transport waited, sleek and dark, nothing like the boxy utility ships hauling ore and personnel between sectors. Two Sek stood near it, and one of the alien crew, tall and thin, four eyes set close together, straightened as One approached.

”The Conclave’s forward patrol pulled back from the boundary this morning,” the alien said. ”Third time this month.”

”They saw what happened to their army,” One said. ”They’re not eager to see it twice.”

”Their message mentioned avoiding further collateral damage to neighboring territories.”

Something moved at the corner of One’s mouth, not quite a smile. ”They’re afraid of losing territory they haven’t lost yet. That’s not restraint. That’s fear wearing a nicer coat.”

The alien didn’t have an answer for that.

”So what happens now,” he said instead.

”I’m going to take the Conclave,” One said, the way someone says what time it is. ”Not fight it. Not negotiate with it. Take it. All fourteen species. Everything they’ve spent centuries deciding belongs to them.”

The alien’s four eyes blinked out of sync, something the Vel’kai couldn’t manage and something that read, even on a completely unfamiliar face, as real unease.

”That’s not a small ambition, sire.”

”No,” One said. ”But before that, there’s something else that needs doing first.”

”What’s that.”

”A statement.”

The administrator looked up from his tablet. ”What kind of statement, sire?”

One didn’t answer right away. He looked at the ship, at the dark hull catching what light made it through the smoke.

”Ready a ship for travel,” he said.

”Yes, sire. How many soldiers should we prepare?”

He thought about it. Not long. Long enough that the pause said something on its own.

”Just a pilot,” he said.

The administrator looked up.

”Sire?”

”A pilot,” One said again. ”That’s all.”

Nobody argued. Nobody ever did. A few minutes later a Sek pilot approached, already dressed for flight, stopping a respectful distance away.

”Destination, sire.”

One sat down in the ship’s forward seat, unhurried, hands loose in his lap, looking out at the smoke-colored sky one more time before he answered.

”Let’s visit the originals,” he said.

”...your majesty, that is our observation,” the council member finished, and closed his tablet like the matter was settled.

The Grand Hall on Raiju Prime ran the length of three ordinary buildings, its ceiling arched high enough that the chandeliers hanging from it looked like distant constellations rather than fixtures. Sunlight came through walls that weren’t quite glass and weren’t quite crystal, something the Grey engineers had perfected generations back, letting light in while keeping heat out, so the whole room stayed bathed in a soft blue-gold glow no matter the hour.

Council members sat in tiered seating that curved around the central floor, representatives from all seven families present today, their family colors marking them out at a glance. Deep purple for the visiting Sterling liaison near the back. Muted green for a Cane representative who kept checking something on his own tablet. Silver-grey robes everywhere else, the color of the house that owned this hall and most of the planet it sat on.

At the head of the room, on a raised dais that had held three generations of Grey rulers before her, Lucy sat with her spine straight and her hands folded in her lap.

Everyone in that room expected her father to answer.

Damien Grey sat one step below her, in a chair that used to be the one that mattered most, and for a beat the whole hall held its breath waiting on him to speak the way it always had.

”Councilman Bertrand,” Lucy said instead, ”you’re telling me the resettlement budget for the northern district exceeds projections by twelve percent, and your recommendation is we cut services to the Lilivil refugees rather than find that twelve percent somewhere else.”

Bertrand blinked. ”Your majesty, I was addressing the council generally, I hadn’t—”

”You were addressing my father,” Lucy said. ”I noticed. Answer the question anyway.”

A few council members shifted in their seats. The Sterling liaison in the back leaned forward slightly.

”The refugee population wasn’t part of our original infrastructure planning,” Bertrand said, choosing his words with visible care now. ”Their needs are, understandably, significant. Housing, medical care, integration support. It’s a strain nobody anticipated.”

”Nobody anticipated a war criminal destroying an entire world and its people needing somewhere to go afterward,” Lucy said. ”You’re right. Nobody planned for that. Funny how disasters work that way.”

Someone near the front coughed.

”I’m not suggesting we abandon them,” Bertrand said quickly. ”Only that perhaps the pace of integration could slow. Give our own infrastructure time to—”

”They’ve been here for years,” Lucy said. ”Living in temporary housing that was supposed to be temporary for eight weeks. You want to slow the pace further.”

”Your majesty, there are constituents in the northern district who feel their own needs are being deprioritized in favor of—”

”Say it,” Lucy said.

Bertrand stopped.

”Go ahead,” Lucy said. ”Say the actual thing you mean instead of the polite version. I’d rather deal with what you actually believe than whatever you’re dressing it up as right now.”

The silence stretched a beat too long before Bertrand found something else to say instead.

”I only meant the political reality, your majesty. Some families feel the refugee population is receiving preferential resource allocation.”

”They’re receiving the resources they need to not starve,” Lucy said. ”If that reads as preferential to anyone in the northern district, I’d invite them to spend a week in what used to be a farming settlement that got erased from orbit and see how preferential it feels.”

Nobody answered that.

Lucy looked around the tiered seating, meeting eyes one at a time, unhurried.

”Here’s what’s actually happening,” she said. ”Two million people lost their entire world because a madman several centuries old decided their planet was worth polluting to make a point. Noah Eclipse pulled them out of that with maybe ten minutes to spare. We took them in because it was the right thing to do, and because turning away refugees whose destruction was our problem to begin with, since Arthur’s still hunting original bloodlines, would have been an act of staggering cowardice.” She let that sit. ”I’m not slowing the pace. I’m not cutting the budget. Find the twelve percent somewhere else, Councilman. That’s not a request.”

Bertrand sat back down without further comment.

A woman in Ares red raised her hand slightly from the second tier. ”Your majesty, if I may, the broader concern some of us share isn’t about the refugees specifically. It’s about Eclipse Faction’s continued involvement in our affairs. An Earth faction operating with this level of access to original family matters, informing our defensive posture, our intelligence, even influencing your own policy decisions—”

”Eclipse hasn’t influenced a single policy decision I’ve made,” Lucy said. ”I have. Every one of them. If you’d like to disagree with a decision, disagree with me directly instead of pretending I’m a puppet for a group of twenty year olds on Earth.”

”That’s not what I meant to imply.”

”It’s exactly what you implied,” Lucy said, ”and I’d rather you say it outright than dress it in diplomatic language that lets you deny it later.” She leaned forward slightly. ”Eclipse told this council the truth about Arthur before anyone else would. The EDF, who has known about our existence, and potentially about all eight original families, for longer than most of you have been alive, sat on that information and called Eclipses concerns irrational when they raised them. Called it internal family business not worth their interference.” Her voice hadn’t risen at all, and that made it land harder. ”Where was that same EDF when Arthur took my father. Where was their concern for internal family business then.”

Nobody answered that either.

”Eclipse came,” Lucy said. ”Without authorization, without institutional backing, at real risk to themselves, because Noah and Lucas and the rest of them actually cared what happened to my family. If that earns them a seat at some tables they wouldn’t otherwise have, I don’t see the problem. I see people who showed up when it mattered.”

She sat back.

”Anything else,” she said, ”or are we done pretending the actual argument is about budget lines.”

The hall stayed quiet for a long moment. Eventually Bertrand gathered his tablet and sat further back in his seat, and the Ares representative found something else to look at.

”Session adjourned,” Lucy said, and stood.

The council rose with her, a wave of motion working its way back through the tiered seats, and filed out through the tall doors at the hall’s far end in loose clusters, murmuring to each other in the particular way people murmured when they’d just watched something land and didn’t want to be the one caught still talking about it.

Damien waited until the doors closed behind the last of them before he laughed.

”Twelve percent,” he said, shaking his head. ”You destroyed that man over twelve percent.”

”He wasn’t actually talking about twelve percent,” Lucy said, dropping back into her seat, the formal posture melting out of her the moment the room emptied. ”He was talking about the northern families not liking that refugees who look nothing like them are getting housing before their cousins’ new development gets its water rerouted.”

”I know what he was talking about,” Damien said. ”I’ve known Bertrand thirty years. I just enjoyed watching you make him say it out loud instead of letting him hide behind the numbers.”

”You could have said something.”

”I could have,” Damien agreed. ”But you didn’t need me to.”

Lucy looked at him for a second, something easing in her face that hadn’t been there through the whole session.

”You didn’t step in,” she said. ”Not once. Even when Bertrand kept looking at you like you were going to rescue him.”

”Why would I rescue him from you,” Damien said. ”You’re doing my job better than I did it most days.” He shifted in his chair, wincing slightly at something that still hadn’t fully healed, and Lucy’s eyes flicked to the movement before she made herself stop watching for it. ”I mean that. I sat in that seat for thirty years and I never once told Bertrand to say the actual thing he meant instead of the dressed up version. You did it in under a minute.”

”I learned it from watching you dodge saying it for thirty years,” Lucy said, and he laughed again, easier this time.

”Your brother would have hit the table,” Damien said. ”Lightning everywhere, half the council diving for cover.”

”Lucas doesn’t have the patience for this,” Lucy said. ”Never did. He’s better where he is.”

”He is,” Damien agreed, and something in his voice went quiet and proud in a way that made Lucy look at him properly. ”You know I used to worry, sending him off at ten years old. Worried he’d come back different. Worse. Angry at us for it.” He shook his head slowly. ”Instead he came back a soldier worth being proud of. Found people worth dying for. Found a version of himself I don’t think he’d have found here.”

”And me?” Lucy said, half joking, half not.

Damien looked at her for a long moment.

”You,” he said, ”became exactly what I always knew you would. I just didn’t think it would happen this fast, or that I’d have to nearly die to see it.”

Lucy didn’t have anything to say to that. She reached over and squeezed his hand instead, and he squeezed back, and for a moment neither of them said anything at all.

The doors at the far end of the hall opened again.

A guard came through first, moving fast enough that his footsteps echoed ahead of him, and behind him a man in deep purple robes Lucy recognized immediately, dust still clinging to the hem like he hadn’t stopped to clean up before demanding an audience.

”Your majesty,” the guard said, ”forgive the interruption. This man says it’s urgent. He claims to speak for the Sterling heirs.”

The man in purple didn’t wait for permission. He crossed the floor at a near run and dropped to one knee in front of the dais, breathing hard.

”Your majesty,” he said. ”Prince Matthias and Princess Evangeline sent me directly. They said to reach you before anyone else.”

”What’s happened,” Lucy said, already standing.

”Aurigon,” the man said. ”Our capital. It’s been attacked. My people are under siege.”

Damien was on his feet now too, one hand braced against the arm of his chair.

”What force dares attack the Sterlings,” he said.

The messenger looked up at both of them, and something in his face made Lucy’s stomach go cold before he even answered.

”Not an army,” he said. ”Just One.”
