Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

Noah had drifted somewhere close to sleep without meaning to, the stillness of his own body making time slippery in a way it never was when he could move, when loud talking finally cut through the haze.

Not the guttural argument from before. Something clearer. A voice threading through the low ambient noise of the space with an authority the others hadn’t carried, and every other sound in the structure seemed to fold itself smaller around it, conversations dropping, movement stilling.

”She’s here,” someone said, close to the woven wall, voice tight with something that sounded like relief and something else underneath it that sounded closer to fear.

Footsteps approached. Many of them, converging from multiple directions, and beneath the footsteps Noah caught something else, a soft, deliberate padding sound layered under the rest, unhurried, the kind of gait that belonged to something that had never once needed to hurry for anyone.

”Explain,” the clear voice said, and it carried through the gaps in the wall with a resonance the guttural voices had never managed, each word shaped precisely, none of the labored effort he’d heard from the others struggling to force human speech through mouths that had forgotten how.

”It came from the sky,” one of the voices answered, the same one that had argued about bringing him here in the first place. ”Chasing Kest through the deep trees. It caught him. Almost.”

”Almost.”

”He struck first. It should have ended there. It didn’t.”

A pause.

”Go on.”

”It vanished from where it stood and appeared somewhere else entirely,” the voice continued. ”Not fast. Not running. Simply gone from one place and present in another, faster than seeing could follow. And when it moved, the air did something wrong around it. Kest says it felt like the forest itself flinched.”

”And you brought it here.”

”We didn’t know what else to do with something like that.”

The padding footsteps grew closer, and the woven wall in front of Noah’s field of view rippled slightly as something pushed through the gap, entering the space directly.

He got his first full look at her.

Fur, dark and sleek, patterned in shifting bands that caught what little light filtered through the canopy overhead and seemed to swallow it rather than reflect it. She stood upright, bipedal, but every line of her carried the coiled economy of something built for hunting rather than walking, shoulders set low and forward, a long tail sweeping slow behind her with a grace that read as deliberate rather than idle. Her face held sharper, more feline proportions than any of the others he’d seen, whiskers catching faint tremors in the air, eyes the same pale yellow as everyone else here but set in a face that had lost far more of its human architecture than the ones guarding him had.

Behind her, more shapes filled the entrance, entourage rather than guards, one built broad and tusked like something between a boar and a man, another lean and long-limbed with the loping posture of a wolf standing on legs it hadn’t quite finished adapting to.

The queen approached slowly, claws clicking soft against the packed earth, and crouched beside him without hesitation, close enough that Noah could feel warmth radiating off her, close enough to smell something wild and clean underneath the general damp of the structure.

She studied him for a long moment, head tilting the way a cat’s did when something didn’t fit its expectations cleanly.

Then she leaned closer and breathed in, slow, deliberate, drawing his scent through whatever remained of a human nose reshaped into something else.

Her whole posture changed.

”Impossible,” she said quietly, more to herself than to anyone else present.

”What,” the guttural voice asked. ”What is it.”

”His constitution.” She didn’t look away from Noah, her eyes narrowing, something moving behind them that looked almost like memory trying to surface through fog. ”I have not smelled this in longer than I can properly count. This is the same bearing our king carried. The same weight beneath the skin.”

The entourage shifted, murmurs passing between them, uneasy.

”Our king is gone,” the boar-shaped one said.

”I know what our king is,” the queen said, sharp enough that the murmurs cut off instantly. ”I am simply telling you what I smell.” She looked back at Noah, something calculating settling into her expression now, patient and certain. ”He will be changed. He will join us properly, and when it is done, he will rule beside me, as our king once did, before the ones from the forest took him from us.”

Something cold settled into Noah’s chest.

He couldn’t move his jaw to speak clearly, but enough control had crept back through his body over the last hour that he managed a rough, dragging attempt at it.

”Changed,” he said, the word coming out slurred but audible. ”Changed into what.”

The queen’s ears flicked toward him, surprise flickering briefly across her expression at hearing him speak at all.

”Into what we are,” she said simply.

”And what are you.”

She considered the question for a moment, tail sweeping slow behind her.

”We are what the forest made of us,” she said. ”What it has always made of those who linger here too long. It changes what it touches, given enough time. Given enough of itself poured into flesh that was never meant to hold it.”

”You weren’t always like this,” Noah said, and it wasn’t a question, though it landed like one, something in him arriving at the shape of it even before he’d finished speaking the words out loud.

The queen went very still.

”What do you mean by that,” she said, careful now, something guarded creeping into her voice.

Noah thought about the pit trap they’d found, the stakes driven at precise angles, the poison coating designed to counter healing specifically, the kind of construction that came from tactical training rather than instinct. He thought about the argument he’d overheard earlier, structured, hierarchical, deferring to authority the way people did rather than the way pure animals did.

He thought about the system’s own words when it had first flagged the thing that captured him.

[BEAST DETECTED]

[NAME: BEASTMAN]

[CLASS: HUMANOID]

[RANK: UNKNOWN]

’Humanoid,’ he thought. ’Not beast. Not animal. It didn’t even try to classify what species this was supposed to have started as. It just called it humanoid and left rank blank, because there’s nothing in its catalogue that fits a category this specific.’

”You speak clearer than the others,” he said slowly, testing each piece as it arrived. ”More precisely. Like whatever you lost, you lost less of than they did. Or maybe you fought harder to keep it.”

The queen didn’t answer, but something in her posture had gone rigid, listening intently despite herself.

”The traps outside,” Noah continued. ”Set with real skill. Angled, poisoned specifically to stop healing. That’s not instinct. That’s training somebody had before any of this happened to them.” He held her gaze, steady despite the paralysis still gripping most of his body.

”Stop,” the boar-shaped one growled from the entrance.

”And the argument I heard earlier,” Noah said, ignoring him, watching only the queen now. ”About whether to bring me here. About waiting for you to decide. That’s not animals following instinct. That’s people, still arguing the way people argue, still deferring to leadership the way people defer, even after everything else about them changed.” He paused.

”You were hunters,” Noah said. ”All of you. People who came into this jungle chasing something, and something in here got into you slowly enough that nobody noticed until there wasn’t anything left to notice with.”

The queen’s eyes held his, and something moved behind them, but it wasn’t grief. It was closer to satisfaction, the look of someone hearing their own story told back to them and finding it flattering rather than painful.

”Yes,” she said simply. ”We were hunters. Weak things, chasing a fortune we thought would matter, carrying weapons that could barely scratch what actually lives in this basin.” Her tail swept slow behind her, unhurried, proud. ”The forest looked at what we were and decided we deserved better than that. It gave us claws that never dull. Speed nothing human ever managed. Senses sharp enough to read intent on the wind before an enemy has finished forming the thought.” She tilted her head, studying him. ”You call it a change like it’s a wound. It is not a wound. It is what we should have been from the beginning, if the world we came from had not spent our whole lives keeping us small.”

”You lost yourselves,” Noah said.

”We lost nothing worth keeping,” the queen said, and there was no hesitation in it at all. ”Whatever fear kept you soft, whatever weakness made you easy to hunt in your old shape, the forest strips that away first. What is left is simply more true than what came before it.” She leaned closer again, voice dropping into something almost intimate. ”You will understand this, once it is done. Everyone does, eventually. Nobody who has been given this ever asks to go back.”

Behind her, the boar-shaped one let out a low sound that might have been agreement, might have been pride, and the rest of the entourage shifted with it, none of them showing anything close to the sorrow Noah had assumed, before now, they must be carrying underneath everything else.

’They don’t think this happened to them,’ Noah thought, watching her stand there, certain and unbothered and terrifyingly sincere. ’They think it was given to them.’

’That’s so much worse.’

Noah lay there, feeling the weight of that settle into him fully now, the horror of it arriving not as shock but as something slower and heavier, grief for people who’d walked into this jungle chasing a payday and never walked back out as themselves.

”Your king,” he said finally. ”You said I share his constitution.”

”He was the strongest among the hunters who came before you,” the queen said. ”Strong enough that the forest’s changes took slower in him than in anyone else. Strong enough that he held onto himself longer than any of us managed.” Her tail swept once, slow. ”He ruled beside me for longer than I care to remember. And then the forest finished what it started, and there was nothing left of him worth calling by his name anymore, and I lost him the same way we all eventually lose everything we came in here already being.”

”And you think I’ll replace him.”

”I think,” the queen said, leaning closer again, her voice dropping into something almost gentle despite everything about her that read as predator, ”that the forest does not offer a constitution like yours twice in a lifetime. And I have waited a very long time to feel that scent again.”

She rose to her full height, tail sweeping behind her, claws clicking once against the packed earth as she settled her weight.

”Rest,” she said. ”The change does not come quickly, and it does not come gently, whatever your body already carries makes it easier. But you will need whatever strength you have left when it begins.” She looked down at him a moment longer, something almost fond in it, the way someone looked at a gift they were certain the recipient hadn’t yet realized was one. ”You will thank the forest eventually. They all do.”

She turned and padded toward the gap in the wall, entourage parting to let her through, the boar-shaped one and the wolf-shaped one falling in step behind her without a word needed between them. The murmurs that had filled the space before her arrival didn’t return right away. Instead the whole structure seemed to hold something reverent in her wake, voices staying low, movements careful, like her presence had left a weight behind that none of them were in a hurry to disturb.

Noah lay there in the quiet that followed, staring up at the woven ceiling, paralysis still gripping most of his body, and let the full shape of what he’d just learned settle into him properly.

’They don’t think this happened to them,’ he thought again. ’They think it was given to them.’

’And she’s not wrong that they’re stronger now. Faster. Sharper. I felt that firsthand, getting dropped before I even saw the hit coming. That part’s real. That part isn’t a delusion she’s telling herself to cope with something ugly.’

’But she’s talking about it like the forest handed them a better version of themselves and took nothing in return. Like speaking clearly is a mercy instead of the last thread connecting her to whatever she used to be, holding on by strength alone while the rest of them lost even that.’

’She said nobody who’s been given this ever asks to go back.’

’Maybe that’s true. Maybe by the time it’s finished, there’s nothing left of you that remembers enough to miss it.’

’That’s not evolution. That’s erasure with a good marketing pitch.’

He tested his fingers again, more out of habit than expectation, and this time felt something answer him, faint, uncertain, a twitch at the very tip of his index finger that hadn’t been there an hour ago.

The toxin was starting to loosen its grip.

He didn’t move further. He kept himself still, breathing slow and even, cataloguing the sound of footsteps beyond the wall, the rhythm of the camp settling back into whatever passed for its normal rest, giving himself time to actually think instead of reacting on instinct the moment his body came back online.

’She said the change takes time,’ he thought. ’That means I’ve got a window. Not endless, but real.’

’I could blink out right now if I wanted to. Even partial function’s probably enough to manage that, void energy doesn’t need my legs any more than it needed them the first time I tried moving through this.’

He didn’t move.

’My team’s out there searching for me,’ he thought. ’Worried, probably furious with me for going dark this long. I could end that worry in a heartbeat.’

’But I still don’t know how many of these people there actually are. I don’t know if there’s a way to reverse whatever’s been done to them, or if the queen’s right that there isn’t. I don’t know what’s actually generating the saturation that started all this, whether it’s a void stone or something else entirely.’

’And I don’t know what happens to the ones left here if I just vanish without answers, without a plan, and Eclipse comes back through swinging because they think I was taken by hostiles instead of understanding what these people actually are.’

He flexed his finger again, felt it respond a fraction more this time, and made his decision.

’Not yet,’ he thought. ’A little longer.’

Somewhere beyond the woven wall, the sound of the camp continued on around him, unaware that the thing they’d captured had already stopped being afraid and started, instead, to plan.
