Noah stared at the notification for a long moment before the actual weight of it settled in.

Four to six hours.

He tried moving his fingers first, the smallest test he could think of, and felt nothing respond. Not resistance, not the burn of muscle refusing a command. Just absence, like the signal his brain sent never actually reached anywhere at all.

He pulled chi into his core, gathering it slow and deliberate the way he’d learned years ago, and pushed it outward through his channels toward his limbs, trying to burn the toxin out the way he’d burned worse things out before. The chi moved fine through his chest, his shoulders, and then hit something at the joints that simply refused it, a wall he couldn’t feel physically but could sense clearly enough through his sight layered under everything else he did.

’It’s not attacking my body,’ he thought. ’It’s attacking the signal. Chi heals tissue. It doesn’t reroute a nervous system that’s been told to stop listening.’

He tried anyway, a second time, a third, pouring more into it, and each attempt dissolved against the same invisible resistance without making a dent. He gave up after the fifth try, not because he’d decided to, but because something in his own biology made the decision for him, exhaustion settling in from effort his body couldn’t actually spend anywhere useful.

’Fine,’ he thought. ’Four to six hours. Let’s see what I can learn in the meantime.’

He couldn’t move his head either, but his eyes worked, and the moment he actually took stock of what surrounded him, the whole shape of where he was came into focus.

Ribs.

Not literal ribs, but wood shaped into the same curved, overlapping pattern, thick branches bent and lashed together into a structure that arched over him like the inside of something’s chest cavity, hollowed and deliberate, nothing about it accidental. Whoever had built this had known exactly what shape they wanted and had spent real time achieving it.

Vines held him down. Thick, bruised-looking things, dark purple where they wrapped his wrists and ankles, tight enough that even with full mobility he suspected they’d have held.

The floor beneath him was packed earth, smoothed flat by what looked like generations of use rather than a single construction effort, and the air carried a smell he couldn’t quite place, something organic and faintly sweet layered under something else, older, mineral, like wet stone left too long in the dark.

’This is a home,’ he thought, looking up at the woven ceiling. ’Not a cage built for prisoners specifically. This is where they live. I just happen to be tied down inside it.’

Voices reached him before he could take in more.

They came from somewhere beyond the curved wall of the structure, low and guttural, the same effortful cadence he’d heard from the one who’d hit him, human speech forced through a mouth that hadn’t been built for it and had adapted anyway. He couldn’t make out words at first, just tone, rising and sharp, clearly an argument rather than a conversation.

Then a shape passed close to a gap in the woven wall, and Noah’s eyes tracked it on pure instinct, and what he saw made something in his chest go cold in a way the paralysis hadn’t managed.

Yellow eyes. All of them. Every single figure moving past that gap carried the same pale glow where a human iris should have been, no variation, no individual color underneath it, like whatever process had made them this way had erased that particular piece of identity across the board.

He kept watching.

More shapes passed. Some taller, broader, fur running darker along their shoulders. Others smaller, quicker, moving in tight groups rather than alone. He counted past a dozen before he lost track, and every single one shared the same eyes, the same underlying wrongness layered over something that had clearly, unmistakably, once been human.

The argument outside grew louder.

”—shouldn’t have brought it here,” one voice said, rough, urgent. ”Not before she sees it.”

”She needs to see it,” another voice answered, and Noah recognized the cadence, the same one that had spoken to him on the ground. ”That’s the whole point. It’s not like the others. It moved through space like it wasn’t there and came back like it never left.”

”That’s exactly why it’s dangerous.”

”That’s exactly why she needs to know.”

A third voice, sharper, cut through both of them. ”Neither of you decide that. She decides that.”

Something hit something else, hard, wood splintering somewhere close enough that Noah felt the vibration through the packed earth beneath him. A body hit the ground outside with enough force to shake dust loose from the woven ceiling above him, and the argument continued in growls and shoves rather than words for a stretch, physical in a way that suggested this wasn’t the first time disagreement here had turned violent.

’They’re not unified,’ Noah thought, watching dust drift down through a shaft of pale light somewhere overhead. ’Whatever they are, whatever they are made of, they argue like people. Even shove each other over disagreements. That’s not pure animal instinct. There’s something structured underneath this.’

He kept listening.

”When does she arrive,” the first voice said, breathing hard now, the fight apparently settled.

”When she arrives,” the sharp voice answered. ”You know how she is. She comes when the forest tells her to come, not before.”

”And until then.”

”Until then, it stays where it is. Nobody touches it. Nobody speaks to it. We wait.”

Footsteps retreated, the argument dissolving into the general ambient noise of the space, more voices further off, low conversations, something that might have been eating, something that might have been children if these things had children, small quick sounds skittering across packed earth somewhere beyond his line of sight.

Noah lay there and let himself actually think it through.

’They’re waiting on a ruler,’ he thought. ’A queen. Whatever she is, whatever authority she carries here, they defer to her completely. Which means whoever’s actually in charge of this place hasn’t shown up yet, and everyone here is operating under strict enough discipline that even a violent disagreement stops short of doing anything to me without her permission.’

’This is not chaos. It’s a society. Broken, twisted, built out of something that shouldn’t have happened to anyone, but a society.’

He thought about the yellow eyes again, all of them, uniform and identical, and something Kelvin had said back on the ship weeks ago, something about beast cores and void saturation, drifted up out of memory and settled next to what he was seeing now.

’Void energy mutates whatever it touches,’ he thought. ’That’s the whole reason Awakened humans exist at all. The seed cracked the planet’s core, the energy bled out, some people adjusted and became what we are now, and some people didn’t adjust so cleanly. What if these are the ones who didn’t buy somehow evolved differently? What if these aren’t some ancient forest species that’s always lived here.’

’What if these are just people. Hunters, probably, based on the gear I saw on some of them. People who came in here chasing a payday and got caught in something that changed them slowly, over years, saturation building the same way it built in that basin Priya mapped, until whatever made them human in the first place got buried under something else entirely.’

The thought sat heavy in his chest, heavier than the paralysis had managed on its own.

’How does that even happen,’ he thought. ’Slow enough that nobody stopped it. Slow enough that whatever was left of them adapted to it instead of fighting it, built homes, built a society, forgot they were ever anything different.’

’Or maybe they didn’t forget. Maybe there was nothing left to remember with by the time it finished.’

He tried his fingers again, more out of habit than expectation, and felt the same absence answer him.

Voices drew closer again, different ones this time, quieter, more curious than argumentative, and Noah’s eyes tracked toward the gap in the wall as two smaller shapes pressed close to it, peering in at him with those same yellow eyes, heads tilted at angles that felt almost childlike despite everything else about them reading as wrong.

One of them made a small sound, curious, almost a question, and reached a clawed hand toward the gap before a larger shape appeared behind them and pulled them both back with a low, warning growl.

’They’re curious about me,’ Noah thought. ’The way kids are curious about something new. That’s not nothing either.’

He lay there a while longer, cataloguing everything he could, the woven structure, the smell, the argument’s rhythm, the way authority clearly flowed downward from someone not yet present, the fact that every single one of them, without exception, carried the same eyes.

’I could leave,’ he thought, testing the idea honestly rather than dismissing it out of hand. ’Blink’s not physical. It doesn’t need my legs, doesn’t need whatever this toxin’s actually blocking. I could be gone from here in a second if I wanted to be.’

He didn’t move.

’But I want to know what this is,’ he thought. ’What happened to them. What this queen actually is, when she finally shows up. Whether there’s anything left in any of them worth saving, or whether this is just what’s left after something ate everything a person used to be.’

’They said I’m not like the others. That I moved through space like I wasn’t there.’

’They’re scared of what I am. Which means whatever’s coming to judge that fear is going to tell me a lot more than running would.’

He settled into the stillness the paralysis had already forced on him, made peace with it instead of fighting it, and watched the gap in the woven wall for the next shape that would pass, patient in a way that had nothing to do with the toxin still running through him and everything to do with a decision he’d made on his own.

’How did this happen,’ he thought again, the question refusing to let go of him even as the light shifted somewhere above the canopy far overhead, marking time he couldn’t otherwise track. ’How does a person become this.’

He didn’t have an answer yet.

But he had time now, whether he wanted it or not, and he intended to use every second of it finding one.
