Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner

Dusk settled over the harbor in slow layers, the last of the light catching the water in long orange streaks before the underwater facility’s outer lights took over, throwing pale blue up through the observation windows into the common area above.

Noah sat on the edge of the low wall bordering the courtyard, one leg hanging off the side, the other bent up so he could rest his arm on his knee. The coin turned over in his fingers, flipping end over end in a lazy rhythm he wasn’t really thinking about anymore. Heads. Tails. Heads. The eclipse pressed into the metal caught the blue light every time it landed face up.

Footsteps behind him. He didn’t need to turn around.

”There he is,” Kelvin said, dropping down onto the wall beside him without asking. ”The man. The myth. The guy who apparently kidnapped my future wife’s best friend for an entire evening and didn’t even bring her back with a receipt.”

”She’s not kidnapped, Kelvin. Also, Diana and Sophie are best friends?”

”She was gone. You were gone. That’s kidnapping-adjacent. And yes, but don’t tell Diana I said this,”

”We went to dinner.” Noah said, while laughing.

”For eleven hours.”

Noah looked at him.

”I have sources,” Kelvin said, entirely unbothered. ”Also I have eyes, and I have a very good memory for access logs, and I also have three other girlfriends of yours who are, and I cannot stress this enough, *extremely* interested in the fact that you took Sophie out solo and didn’t extend the invite to the group chat.”

”There’s a group chat?”

”There is always a group chat, Noah. I set it up months ago. It’s called Eclipse Wives, don’t ask, Seraleth named it.”

Noah huffed something that wasn’t quite a laugh and looked back down at the coin. Flip. Catch. Flip.

”They’ll understand,” he said. ”Sophie needed it more than any of them right now. After everything. I’ll get around to the others too. I always do.”

”I know you will,” Kelvin said, and for a second the joking dropped out of his voice entirely, replaced by something steadier. ”I’m not actually worried about it. I just like giving you a hard time. It’s basically a love language at this point.”

They sat there for a moment, the water lapping somewhere below the reinforced glass, the courtyard quiet except for the occasional footstep of someone crossing it on their way to somewhere else.

”So,” Kelvin said. ”How are you. Actually.”

Noah didn’t answer right away.

”The parents thing,” Kelvin said, gentler now. ”Going all the way up there. Finding out they weren’t even there. That’s — I mean, that’s a lot, man. I don’t think I fully processed how much that must’ve sucked until just now, sitting here.”

Noah turned the coin over one more time and closed his fist around it.

”It sucked,” he said simply. ”Eight months, Kelvin. Eight months and they were reassigned somewhere I still don’t have a location for. I flew all the way up there covered in alien blood and the guy in charge of the entire EDF looked me in the eye and told me sorry, wrong door.”

”That’s rough.”

”It is what it is,” Noah said. ”But.” He paused. ”I did meet the Supreme General properly. Like, actually spent time with him. Talked to him.”

Kelvin’s eyebrows went up. ”And?”

”He’s the strongest human alive,” Noah said. ”Not like — not strongest in a cool nickname kind of way. I mean it. I stood next to him and felt it. Like standing next to a reactor that’s been running at full output so long it forgot it had a lower setting.”

”More than you?” Kelvin said.

Noah looked at him.

”Dude,” he said.

Kelvin sat with that for a second, staring out at the water, and then shook his head slowly, like he was physically trying to dislodge a belief that had been load-bearing for a while.

”Okay, see, that’s — I need you to understand something,” he said. ”After you erased Kruel. After that punch. I genuinely, and I mean *genuinely*, walked around for like two weeks thinking nothing on this planet or off it could touch you. I had accepted it as a fact of the universe. Noah Eclipse cannot be hurt. It’s canon now.”

”Well,” Noah said. ”Turns out there’s a ceiling. And it’s him.”

”That’s — ” Kelvin stopped. Blinked. ”Wait. Hold on. Back up. That punch. The Kruel thing.”

”Yeah?”

”Was that your soul form?”

Noah nodded once.

Kelvin went completely still for a second, and then he stood straight up off the wall like something had physically launched him.

”WAIT.” He spun around to face Noah fully, both hands coming up, fingers spread like he needed the extra surface area to properly hold the reaction. ”Wait wait wait wait. You found it? You actually found your soul form? The thing? THE thing. Alpha rank, every S rank and up has one, the actual true expression of what your body — Noah. NOAH.”

”I found it.”

”You found it and you *led with mentioning the General being stronger than you*?! That is not how you bury a lede, that is a crime against storytelling, I have been waiting *years* to hear you say those words—”

”I figured you’d get there eventually.”

Kelvin sat back down, visibly recalibrating, running a hand back through his hair. ”Okay. Okay. This is — we’re gonna come back to this. I have questions. Many questions. What’s it look like, does it hurt, do you have a cooldown, is there a name for it, did you get cooler hair, wait your hair’s already—” He gestured vaguely at Noah’s head. ”You know what, later. Later. I need the full debrief later, with diagrams if possible.”

”There’s no diagrams.”

”I’ll make diagrams.”

Noah smiled and let it sit there for a second.

”That’s great, though,” Kelvin said, settling, some of the manic energy folding back down into something calmer, warmer. ”Genuinely. That’s — I’m happy for you, man. That’s a big deal.”

”Thanks.”

A beat of quiet passed between them, the kind that only worked because they’d had a hundred versions of it before.

”So,” Noah said. ”How’s the wedding thing coming along.”

Kelvin’s whole posture changed instantly, like someone had flipped a switch behind his ribs. ”Do not get me started.”

”I’m getting you started.”

”Diana wants the harbor venue because of the sound system, which, fine, reasonable, I respect audio engineering as a discipline. But Sera’s pushing the inner district courtyard, and she’s making a compelling case, I’ll admit, but then Lila’s over here saying neither location matters if the catering’s bad, which, also fair, but do you know how many venue tours I’ve been on in the last three weeks? Four. FOUR, Noah. I have opinions now about acoustic dampening in outdoor event spaces that I did not ask to have.”

”Sounds rough.”

”It is rough. It’s the roughest thing that’s happened to me and I got both my arms replaced with metal ones.”

Noah laughed properly this time, short and real, and Kelvin grinned at getting it out of him.

Then Noah’s expression shifted. Not dramatically. Just a small settling, the kind that meant the conversation was about to change lanes.

”Hey,” he said. ”I actually need to talk to you about something.”

Kelvin caught the shift immediately. He’d known Noah long enough that he didn’t ask what, he just turned slightly on the wall, giving him his full attention, the joking energy dialing itself down without needing to be told.

”Talk,” he said.

Noah opened his fist and held the coin out on his palm.

”You remember this,” he said. ”The gala. Before everything with the medieval timeline, before any of it. Some men came from the Ark that night. Said they had something from my parents.”

Kelvin’s eyes went to the coin. ”Yeah. Yeah, I remember. You never told me what was actually on it.”

”An eclipse,” Noah said. ”The moon crossing the sun.” He turned it slightly so the light caught the engraving. ”I found the exact same image carved into stone on that planet. Not close. Not similar. The exact same image, Kelvin. In a shrine, centuries old, at least, maybe older, carved into the wall of a chamber underneath a mountain.”

Kelvin didn’t say anything. He was listening the way he listened when something had actually caught, the joking part of his brain going quiet to make room.

Noah kept going. He told him about the carved woman, arms raised, the winged creatures circling her in frozen flight. About Yrsala, the frost giant queen, and what she’d said — that a man had come to her people’s ancestors, moved their entire city underground in a single act nobody had ever explained, and that he hadn’t come alone. That there’d been a woman with him. That the legends said she was the one who convinced him to help at all.

”She said the woman treated her ancestors with a kindness the man never bothered to perform,” Noah said. ”And when I got back, I put it together. The man moving an entire city underground like it was nothing. That’s not just power, Kelvin. That’s Arthur. Has to be. And if it is—”

”Then the woman,” Kelvin said slowly, ”was Gigarose.”

”Yeah.”

Kelvin sat with that, staring at the coin without really seeing it, his mind clearly already moving somewhere else.

”Okay,” he said. ”Okay, hold on. Give me a second, because something’s clicking and I want to make sure I’m not just making noise.”

”Take your time.”

”You said centuries old. The shrine.”

”At least.”

”And the medieval timeline you got dropped into. She was there too, right? Playing both sides. Arthur’s witch and also the — what’d you call her, the nameless woman who blessed the kingdom.”

”Both. Same person.”

”So that’s two separate timelines,” Kelvin said, counting on his fingers now, the old habit kicking in. ”Two. The medieval one and whatever era Yrsala’s ancestors are from, which from the sound of it predates recorded anything. Plus Lilivil.”

Noah’s head came up slightly. ”Lilivil.”

”Lilivil,” Kelvin said, nodding, already there. ”I was there for that one, remember? No secondhand account needed. She showed up, one-shot the ancient entity Sera’s people worshipped, and just — left. Didn’t even stick around to gloat.”

”Right.”

”Plus the arena,” Kelvin said. ”The Elder Genes thing. Which, by the way, I want to circle back to at some point because I don’t think I ever got the full story from you on what actually happened in that match, I just remember you coming out of the pod looking like you’d seen your own funeral.”

”I’ll tell you the whole thing,” Noah said. ”But keep going. You’re onto something.”

Kelvin stood up. He always stood up when his brain outran his mouth, like sitting still physically slowed the thought down.

”Okay so work with me here,” he said, pacing a tight line in front of the wall. ”You’ve got a person — being, entity, whatever word actually fits her, we’ll get to that — who shows up at four completely disconnected points. A VR game she apparently built herself. An ancient underground civilization old enough that its own legends don’t have a real name for her. A medieval war centuries removed from that. And Lilivil, which is off-world, alien, a completely different technological and cultural context entirely.”

”And every time,” Noah said, ”she does something and then just — leaves. Doesn’t stick around. Doesn’t seem to want anything obvious out of it.”

”Right, and that’s the part that’s bugging me,” Kelvin said, snapping his fingers once. ”Because normally when you’ve got a recurring player across history doing big flashy things, there’s a throughline. A goal. Something you can point at and go, ah, that’s what they wanted the whole time. But this is —” He stopped pacing. ”Actually, hang on. Hang on, I read something once. About engines.”

”Engines.”

”Combustion engines, specifically, work with me, this is going somewhere I promise.” Kelvin turned to face him. ”An engine doesn’t run because fuel exists. It runs because fuel gets *compressed* and then *ignited*. You need the pressure and the spark both, or nothing moves. Just fuel sitting there does nothing. It has to be forced into something small and then set off.”

”Okay.”

”Now think about human history,” Kelvin said, and he was fully rolling now, hands moving, the words coming faster. ”Actual human history, not the game, not the timelines, just — us. Regular old boring linear human history. You ever notice how it’s never actually stable? Like, genuinely stable, for long? Every generation’s got somebody. Early two-thousands, you’ve got Bin Laden. Before that you’ve got actual full-blown warlords, Napoleon, conquering half a continent because apparently that seemed like a reasonable Tuesday to him. Further back you’ve got — I don’t even know, pick a century, there’s always a guy. There’s always a war. There’s always some catalyst that shows up right when things are getting too comfortable and just — lights the whole thing on fire.”

Noah was quiet, but his eyes had sharpened, following every word.

”None of them scale to her,” Kelvin said, holding up a hand before Noah could say it. ”I know that. Napoleon’s not erasing mountains. Bin Laden’s not one-shotting ancient cosmic entities. That’s not the comparison I’m making.”

”Then what’s the comparison,” Noah said.

”The comparison,” Kelvin said, ”is that they all did the same *job*. Not the same scale. The same job. They stirred things up. They were the spark. Something was sitting there, compressed, ready to go, and they were the thing that touched it off.” He looked at Noah. ”What if that’s what she does. Not power for power’s sake. Not conquest. She shows up right at the moment something’s compressed enough to ignite, and she’s the spark.”

Noah leaned forward slightly, elbows on his knees.

”That tracks with the medieval timeline,” he said slowly, thinking it through as he said it. ”Arthur was already broken. Already furious, already capable of doing what he did. She didn’t make him that way. She just — pointed him. Told me the truth about her, and that’s what actually ended the war, not because I beat him, but because she’d been the one holding the match the whole time and I took it out of her hand.”

”Exactly,” Kelvin said, snapping his fingers again. ”Exactly that. She’s not building the bomb. She’s finding bombs that already exist and making sure they go off at the right moment.”

”But why,” Noah said. ”That’s — okay, say you’re right. Say that’s what she does. Why. What does she get out of any of this? Chaos for chaos’s sake doesn’t hold up, not across centuries, not with that kind of patience. Nobody’s that committed to nothing.”

Kelvin opened his mouth. Closed it. Sat back down slowly, the manic pacing energy draining out of him into something more careful.

”Yeah,” he said. ”That’s the part I don’t have.”

They sat with it, the water lapping below them, the last of the orange light finally giving way entirely to the blue.

”Unless,” Noah said, quiet now, ”it’s not chaos for its own sake. Unless the spark is the point. Unless every one of those moments — the medieval war, Lilivil, whatever happened underground with the frost giants, even the arena, even me, specifically me — unless she needed something to happen at each of those points, and stirring it up was just the method. Not the goal.”

”A means to an end,” Kelvin said.

”Yeah.”

”An end we don’t have any visibility on at all.”

”None,” Noah said.

Kelvin exhaled hard through his nose, running both hands down his face. ”Okay. This is officially the most insane thing I’ve ever tried to map out, and I once tracked a cat 5 migration pattern through six sectors using nothing but beast core decay signatures while you were away. This is worse than that.”

”Worse how.”

”Because that had an answer at the end,” Kelvin said. ”This might not. This might just be — her. Just existing across everything, everywhere, always at the exact moment something’s about to break, and we don’t get to know why because she’s simply operating on a timescale that makes the question itself kind of meaningless to her.”

Noah looked down at the coin again.

”There’s one more thing,” he said.

Kelvin looked at him.

”The system flagged something in me,” Noah said. ”Back after the medieval timeline. Ruler Bloodline. It’s still there. It’s why my Draconic Halfling projection came back unknown, the system’s never had a reference point for whatever it’s actually doing to me.” He paused. ”The General has it too. I saw it flare when he fought the Reaver. Same classification. Same words.”

Kelvin went very still.

”Two people,” he said slowly. ”Two people, both flagged with the exact same rare classification, both of whom Gigarose has personally, directly interfered with. You, on the arena, on the medieval road. Him — I mean, come on, Noah, think about it, she’s not just around him. She’s living with him. On the Ark. Probably making him tea in his actual quarters.”

Noah’s stomach dropped slightly, though he didn’t fully know why yet, some instinct arriving ahead of the thought that produced it.

”I didn’t know that,” he said.

”I don’t know that either, not for certain,” Kelvin said quickly. ”I’m extrapolating. But it wouldn’t shock me even a little, and if it’s true—” He stopped himself. Shook his head. ”Okay. Ruler Bloodline. What does that even mean. Like, as words. Ruler of what. Bloodline going back to who.”

”I don’t know,” Noah admitted. ”The system’s never elaborated. It just flags it and moves on, like it assumes I already know.”

”That’s — okay, that might genuinely be the actual thread,” Kelvin said, and his voice had dropped into something quieter, more serious than the rest of the conversation had been. ”Not her methods. Not the timeline hopping. The bloodline. If that’s the actual mechanism connecting you to her, to Arthur, to the General, then figuring out what a Ruler Bloodline even *is* might matter more than figuring out what she wants.”

”Because it’d tell us why she keeps ending up near people who have it.”

”Right,” Kelvin said. ”She’s not just showing up randomly at compressed moments in history. Maybe she’s showing up wherever *this specific thing* is. Whatever it actually is.” He looked at Noah. ”And you’ve got it. Which means, statistically, historically, given everything we just laid out — she’s not done with you.”

Noah closed his hand back around the coin.

The courtyard had gone fully dark around them now, the facility’s lights taking over completely, the water below the glass a deep, steady blue.

Neither of them said anything for a moment.

”This got heavier than I meant it to,” Kelvin said finally, some of the old warmth creeping back into his voice, an attempt to loosen the air a little. ”I came out here to make fun of you for your date.”

”You’re bad at staying on topic.”

”I’m excellent at staying on topic, I just have several topics happening at once, it’s called multitasking, Diana loves it about me.”

Noah huffed a small laugh, and it helped, a little.

Kelvin stood up, stretching his arms over his head, the metal joints in his prosthetics catching faint clicks as he moved.

”We’re gonna need way more than tonight to actually get anywhere with this,” he said. ”But I’m glad we talked it out. Genuinely. This has been sitting in both our heads separately for way too long.”

”Yeah,” Noah said.

Noah stood up too.

”Well,” he said, brushing off his pants, tucking the coin back into his pocket. ”I’m off.”

Kelvin blinked at him. ”Off where?”

Noah looked at him for a second, something settling into his expression that Kelvin recognized immediately, the specific look that always preceded something Kelvin was going to have opinions about.

”I’m gonna go attempt something crazy,” Noah said.
