Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 316: Chapter 306: Bitterly Cold

Tang Mo used her spiritual power to examine the fissure. It was bottomless. Whether human or mutant beast, anything that fell in had no chance of survival.

The only thing she wanted to do now was go home and see her mother and brother.

In this situation, even S Base wasn’t a guaranteed safe place. Everyone was hard-pressed to save themselves.

She wasn’t worried about Qin Ling, who could take care of herself. But she had to get back to her mother and brother.

Cataclysms like this were always when people were most helpless and in the greatest danger—right at the beginning.

Tang Mo flew through the sky on her cloud at a rapid pace, but without her ID Watch, navigating was difficult.

Tang Mo could only try her best to identify any remaining iconic landmarks to get her bearings and head toward S Base as quickly as possible.

The higher she flew, the more obvious certain changes became, especially the temperature.

Sitting on the cloud, Tang Mo felt a chill creep over her. ’Is it because the temperature is lower at high altitudes?’

’But it didn’t seem this cold just a moment ago.’

At first, Tang Mo thought her senses were playing tricks on her, but the longer she flew, the more pronounced the cold became, until it was almost unbearable.

A single layer of clothing had been enough before, but she slowly realized it wasn’t her imagination—the weather really was getting colder. Unable to stand it any longer, Tang Mo pulled a thick coat from her Space and put it on.

Once she had the warm coat on, Tang Mo felt much more comfortable floating high in the sky. She reached out to feel the frigid air. A few drops of water landed on her palm and turned to frost before she could even shake them off.

The cold was truly baffling. Tang Mo was certain it had nothing to do with her flying at a high altitude.

Tang Mo looked up at the sky again. ’Am I so tired that my eyes are failing me? Why is the sky getting darker and darker?’

The fissures on the ground continued to widen. Some grew so large that entire buildings collapsed into them.

Many small bases simply vanished into the chasms.

’No, this is just the beginning. Something even more terrifying is bound to happen.’

Tang Mo instinctively sped up. This Hell Era was far more terrifying than she and Qin Ling had anticipated.

They had originally thought the Hell Era might mean a drastic increase in the power of mutant beasts, or the appearance of even more frightening monsters.

If that were the case, humanity could have united, strengthened their defenses, and improved their own abilities. They would have had a fighting chance.

But now, it was obvious they had been too naive. The Hell Era, at least for now, was making the world’s environment far more hostile.

If the temperature continued to drop, then all the progress the research institutes had made in agriculture would be for nothing.

Whether it was cultivation in existing soil or hydroponics, the freezing weather was not a favorable environment for plants to grow.

Right now, the main food source for most ordinary people was hunting and eating mutant beasts, but...

Tang Mo was worried. As the temperature continued to fall, the mutant beasts would also go into hiding.

Caught between the cold and starvation, humanity’s situation would only grow more dire.

This Hell Era was indeed proving to be even deadlier than the first apocalypse.

Anxious, Tang Mo flew faster and faster. Fortunately, as she drew closer to S Base, the route became much more familiar.

It was only when she was flying over S Base that Tang Mo realized that, compared to the smaller bases, the much larger S Base was perhaps in even greater danger.

Because S Base had prepared early and was well-managed, it was not that different from a pre-apocalypse city. Life had mostly returned to normal for its residents. Even without risking their lives hunting mutant beasts, people could avoid starvation by selling goods, repairing the perimeter walls, or taking on other odd jobs within the base.

But now, the sudden tectonic shift had cracked open the once-impregnable walls of S Base. The base instantly fractured, splitting into several different sections.

Places that countless people had poured their blood, sweat, and hope into simply fell into the fissures.

The buildings collapsed one after another—the Mission Center, the Beast Fighting Arena, the auction house, the exchange...

Building those places had required the time and energy of so many people, as well as countless resources that were priceless in the apocalypse.

But their disappearance was instantaneous. In the blink of an eye, those places were destroyed before everyone’s eyes.

Everyone knew that you shouldn’t stay inside during an earthquake; open, flat ground was the safest place to be.

But space within the base was already limited, and with buildings packed so densely, where was one to find any open ground?

So everyone could only swarm toward the outside of the base. No one was worried about mutant beasts anymore; survival was the only thing that mattered.

Tang Mo quickly located the Wen Family’s villa. The villa had a large basement, but with the fissures still spreading, she wasn’t sure if her mother and the others would still be there.

The Wen Family’s villa was still standing. Luckily, the massive fissure hadn’t reached it.

There was, however, a large open area in front of the villa. After landing in a relatively hidden spot and approaching the villa, Tang Mo saw Uncle Wen and her mother standing in the middle of the open space.

The other servants had already scattered and fled. Only a few of Wen Jianshu’s long-time trusted men remained, standing guard around him with weapons in hand.

The group had rushed out of the house in a hurry and hadn’t brought anything with them. With the earthquake still ongoing, they didn’t dare go back inside.

Meanwhile, the temperature had dropped to a frightening level, colder than even the harshest days of a normal winter.

Lin Yi shivered as she held Yangyang. Wen Jianshu had taken off his own coat and wrapped it around his wife and son, holding them close to give them as much warmth as he could.

The trusted men formed a circle around the three of them, trying to block the cold air, but everyone was still shivering uncontrollably.

”Mama, I wanna go back to my room and get under the blankie. Mama, Yangyang’s cold.”

Little Yangyang couldn’t stand this kind of cold. His face had turned purple, and he started to wail.

Everyone was dressed in single layers of clothing; some of the trusted men had even run out in just tank tops. Now, all they could do was grit their teeth and endure it.

”Mom! Uncle Wen!”

Tang Mo saw them shivering from the cold from a distance and hurried over.

”Sis, hold me! Yangyang’s cold.”

Seeing his sister, little Yangyang immediately reached his arms out for Tang Mo to hold him. In Yangyang’s heart, his sister could do anything.
