WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

The gold-lit route carried them away from the branching tunnels until the last red markers on Sterling’s map vanished behind stone. For several minutes, the Arcline did nothing dramatic, which made Sio trust it less. Its hum settled back into one deep note under his boots, the floor stopped trying to leave sideways, and even the guide returned to its usual pleasant posture above the black core.

Around him, the rescued passengers looked worse now that nobody was actively shooting at them. One man sat against the wall with both hands wrapped around a restraint-burned wrist. Two children shared a seat meant for someone much broader than either of them, leaning into each other whenever the carriage shifted. Fern moved through the group checking injuries while Rhea kept one palm near the floor, not quite touching it.

Sio wiped dried blood from beneath his nose and looked at the gold route marker floating beside the guide. ”Civilian Safe Node still means nothing to you?”

Sterling’s projection broke into static near Fern’s shoulder. ”It means the people who built this system expected disasters. Beyond that, no. The surviving references I have are too fragmented.” He enlarged the 38% Legacy Index copy, but most of the recovered sections were names, lineage categories and broken route identifiers. ”Your destination does appear three times. Every reference is old enough to make me uncomfortable.”

Caspian sat on the edge of a curved bench and flexed his fingers. ”You’re uncomfortable when a door opens without charging you.” Sterling’s projection turned toward him. ”That is because free doors are historically suspicious.”

The guide raised one hand as the lights along the carriage softened from gold to pale white. ”Emergency destination approaching. Injured passengers may request medical assistance upon arrival.” Sio glanced at Fern. ”I vote we request all of it.” Fern tightened a strip of cloth around a woman’s forearm and nodded toward the windows. ”First we find out who is answering.”

The tunnel widened ahead. Light appeared in long vertical lines rather than station lamps, running up walls covered in pale stone and living roots. Sio leaned toward the window as the Arcline slowed. The route opened into a cavern so broad that the ceiling vanished behind hanging mist. Water ran down one side in narrow channels, feeding terraces of plants built into the rock. Old silver paths curved between them.

There were no Organization floodlights, but there were no ruins either. Warm light glowed behind windows cut into the terraces. Fabric hung from rails. Small wind wheels turned beside water channels even though Sio could not feel a draft inside the carriage. Someone had left a basket near a stairway, and steam rose from a pot beneath an awning farther back.

Angle stepped closer to the glass. ”People live here.” Rhea’s hand finally touched the floor. Her ears lifted, then shifted toward the station beyond the window. ”A lot.”

The Arcline slid into a recessed platform and stopped with a soft pressure release. The guide brightened. ”Welcome to Civilian Safe Node Seven. Emergency passengers have priority access to shelter, food and medical support.” Sio stared at the number. ”Seven.” He looked at the guide. ”How many are there?” The guide’s smile stayed fixed. ”Service information unavailable.” Sio sighed. ”Of course it is.”

The doors opened onto a platform without a rifle in sight. An older woman stood at the far end holding a basket against one hip, and beside her a boy with short horns had frozen halfway through carrying a stack of folded cloth. Both stared at the Arcline until the woman’s grip loosened and the basket hit the floor, sending fruit rolling between the old silver lines.

The sound brought people from the terraces. A man with pointed ears appeared first, followed by a human woman in an apron, then two furred children who stopped behind her legs. More faces gathered along the upper paths. Some looked entirely human until Sio noticed small differences in ears, eyes or the shape of their hands. Others did not bother hiding anything, and the platform stayed silent until one of the rescued children inside the carriage started crying.

The older woman crossed the platform at a run, and that broke whatever hesitation held everyone else. People came down the steps carrying blankets, water, boxes and stretchers. Fern stepped into the doorway and lifted both hands. ”We have injured and children. Some restraints are still on.” The woman barely looked at Fern before reaching the nearest child. ”Bring them out.” Her voice was rough with age and something Sio could not place. ”All of them.”

The platform filled with movement. A scaled man knelt beside the passenger with the burned wrist and cut the damaged restraint away with a thin tool. Two teenagers carried a stretcher between them while arguing about which end was supposed to go first. The horned boy who had dropped the cloth returned with twice as much and nearly walked into Angle because he kept staring at him.

Angle caught the top of the stack before it fell. ”Careful.” The boy’s eyes went to Angle’s hands, then his face. ”You’re hot.” Sio turned his head while Angle stared at the boy. ”Excuse me?” The boy pointed at the heat haze still lingering around Angle’s fingers. ”Your hands.” Sio covered his mouth with one fist. ”Tragic clarification.” Angle shoved the folded cloth into Sio’s chest and walked away.

Rhea had not moved from the doorway. Her gaze traveled across the terraces, the roots woven through old walls, the different faces moving together without anyone treating them as unusual. A little girl with foxlike ears ran past carrying a cup in both hands, and Rhea followed her with her eyes until she disappeared behind a medical screen.

Fern noticed. ”You all right?” Rhea stepped onto the platform. Her fingers brushed the stone beneath her feet, and her shoulders eased by a fraction. ”The ground here feels different.” Sio came beside her with the pile of cloth Angle had abandoned. ”Different good or different ancient thing wants to eat us?” Rhea glanced at him. ”Quiet.” Sio shifted the cloth higher. ”That did not answer the question.”

The older woman returned after handing a child to a medic. Up close, Sio saw pale markings at her temples and the slight point of one ear beneath gray hair. Her attention settled on Fern’s coat, then on the small ring-of-light emblem stitched near the inner seam where most people would never see it. Her expression tightened as she asked, ”Who gave you that?”

Fern’s hand moved instinctively toward the emblem. ”A friend.” The woman looked past her into the Arcline, counting faces. ”That answer has caused trouble here before.” Caspian stepped down from the carriage. ”Then we should fit in beautifully.”

The woman’s eyes narrowed, but someone behind her laughed. She ignored it and looked at Fern again. ”Name.” Fern gave it, and the woman glanced at Caspian, then Sio, Angle and Rhea. ”You came through an active Arcline with Organization restraints, Eclipse damage on the outer shell and enough children to empty half our clinic.”

Sio shifted the folded cloth higher against his chest. ”When you say it like that, it sounds irresponsible.” The woman answered, ”It is irresponsible.” Sio nodded. ”Good. I was worried we were making a bad first impression.” Her mouth twitched despite herself. ”Mara.”

Fern relaxed only slightly. ”Is this Aureole?” Mara looked toward the upper terraces. A human man was carrying a furred toddler on one shoulder while an Elven woman shouted instructions down to a medic. Near the water channel, somebody had painted the ring-of-light symbol on a storage door, but another door beside it carried no mark at all.

”Aureole passes through,” Mara said. ”Some stay. Some help. Some cause problems and leave before I can charge them for repairs.” Caspian looked pleased. ”That sounds familiar.” Mara gave him a flat look. ”It should.” The man with the ring-of-light painted on his storage door carried bandages beside a woman with no symbol at all, while Mara kept assigning beds without asking either of them what they belonged to.

Sterling’s projection tried to reappear above Fern’s wrist and broke apart immediately. His voice arrived in fragments. ”Signal... shielded... very rude architecture...” Mara looked at the projection. ”Turn that off.” Fern covered the emitter with her palm. ”Why?” Mara’s eyes moved to the walls. ”Because Safe Node Seven is still alive.”

Sio’s attention followed hers toward the Arcline as Mara continued. ”Most old systems sleep. Some were stripped. Some were found by people who should never have found them.” She watched the rescued children being carried into the terraces. ”This one survived because people learned how to hide it.”

Sio looked at the station again. The roots were not growing randomly over the silver lines. They covered cameras, seams and old signs. Water channels crossed places where a scan might expect empty stone. Homes had been built into the old structure without cutting through it.

Fern lowered her voice. ”Does the Organization know?” Mara looked back at her. ”If they did, we would not be standing here.”

Rhea’s fingers pressed into the platform. Mara noticed and looked down at her hand, then at Rhea’s ears. ”You listen through the ground?”

Rhea went still, but Mara raised one palm before she could answer. ”I didn’t ask for an explanation.” She turned toward the terraces. ”There are things here that stayed alive by learning when not to ask.”

A bell sounded somewhere above them, three slow notes rolling through the cavern until conversations around the platform quieted. One of the medics looked toward Mara. ”Outer route?” Mara’s face hardened. ”Seal it.”

Across the cavern, silver lines vanished beneath the roots one by one. Warm windows dimmed. Panels slid over the platform entrances, and the Arcline guide in Sio’s hand flickered as if the station itself had covered its eyes. Fern uncovered Sterling’s emitter, but his projection returned only as a broken outline. ”Something just entered the branch behind you.”

Mara turned toward the dark tunnel where their Arcline had arrived. ”Then somebody followed the emergency route.” Sio shifted the black core into his other hand while the last open passage began to close. Around them, the people of Safe Node Seven moved without panic, carrying children deeper into the terraces as every visible trace of the station disappeared behind stone, roots and darkness.
