WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

The fire snapped behind Sio as he checked the camp again. Nothing shifted above the bedding, no tiny claws scraped over stone, and the dried food in his pocket was still untouched. Water struck somewhere beyond the light, each drop carrying farther than it should have. Sio’s hand went to his shoulder and found only the fabric of his shirt, then he turned toward the deeper passage as the skin beneath his right eye pulled tight.

He crouched beside the broken shelf and brushed two fingers through the dust. Three small marks crossed the powder and vanished toward the tunnel. The entity is going to kill me if I lose its baby. By the time another thought tried to follow, Sio was already moving.

Angle came after him in boots, gauntlets and the same pair of underpants that had somehow survived the previous night. Sterling’s gaze dipped once, returned to Angle’s face, then dipped again until Angle finally looked down at himself. ”Your shirt burned. Your trousers burned. Somehow those survived. I need to know what they’re made of.” Angle kept walking. ”You’re not examining my underwear.” Sterling pushed his glasses higher. ”Scientifically disappointing.”

Sio’s attention dropped to the gauntlets instead. ”Don’t those calm your fire down? How did you burn everything if you had them?” Angle’s thumb stopped on the left strap. Leather creaked under his fingers while water ticked somewhere ahead. ”I wasn’t wearing them.” He tightened the buckle until it sat flush against his wrist and walked on. Sio followed without asking why.

Sterling clipped a narrow lamp to his coat before the campfire vanished behind the first bend. Its pale beam slid over damp walls as the tunnel narrowed until stone brushed both shoulders, then opened into a wider echo. Sio almost passed the first straight line before his fingertips found it beneath the mineral crust, a groove running where water would never have carved one.

Around the next bend stood a doorway with no door, one side swallowed by the mountain, the other holding a bronze loop gone green with age. Inside sat half a stone bench and three shallow niches. Farther along, pale deposits smothered a carved figure except for one shoulder, an upraised arm and the point of a long weapon. Sterling rubbed a thumb across it, and a brittle flake came away with a dry hiss, uncovering hooked marks and circles.

”Writing?” Sio asked, leaning close enough to smell wet stone and old metal. Sterling shifted his glasses and traced one groove without touching it. ”Maybe names. Maybe warnings. Give me a few hours and a proper light.” Sio glanced at the narrow lamp on his coat. ”You have one of those things.” Sterling looked down at it. ”I said proper light.”

A click sounded beneath Sterling’s boot. Dust trembled from a seam beside his knee, and something inside the wall began to turn with a grinding drag Sio felt along his teeth. Sterling caught Angle’s sleeve, pulled a black disk from his coat and pressed it against the stone. The disk hummed once. The grinding stopped with a heavy clunk that travelled through the floor.

Sio looked at the disk, then at Sterling. Angle’s stare joined his until Sterling glanced between them. ”What?” Sio pointed. ”You had that?” Sterling slipped the device back into his coat. ”Several, actually.” Angle exhaled through his nose. ”Next time, tell us early dude.”

Beneath the cold mineral damp came something warmer and sour, old fur mixed with stale meat and animal musk. Sio breathed through his mouth and tasted it anyway. The pull beneath his right eye still tightened along Gumm’s route, but another pressure brushed against it now, heavy and uneven, there for a heartbeat and gone whenever the cave fell still.

Four grooves tore across the next pillar. They started above Sio’s head and crossed the chest of a carved figure deep enough to expose clean grey beneath centuries of grime. Around the following bend, an ancient door lay broken inward. Its bronze braces had not rusted apart; they had folded. One carried paired arcs sunk deep into the metal.

Sterling crouched and wiped away the grit. The curves narrowed to points where teeth had punched in. Pale fur clung beneath the crushed brace, coarse enough to rasp over his glove when he lifted it with tweezers. Behind them, water dripped in a slow rhythm. Angle’s gauntlet creaked as his fingers closed.

Sterling clipped a narrow lens over his glasses and turned the fur beneath his lamp. ”There was an old expedition account scholars used as an example of what fear does to memory.” He kept his eyes on the strand. ”The survivors called this place Veilhollow. They wrote about corridors that didn’t match their maps, ruins under the mountain, and animals that should have vanished long before they arrived.”

Another scrape came from the arch ahead, closer this time. Sterling lowered the tweezers. ”One of them described a Cragbone bear.” A breath rolled out of the darkness and pushed a thin sheet of dust across their boots.

The head appeared first. Pale bone plated its brow and jaw, then climbed over shoulders so broad they brushed both sides of the opening. Grey mineral veins ran through the armor as though the mountain had grown over the animal. One forepaw struck the floor, and its claws bit into stone before tearing free again.

Sterling’s lips parted, but Angle was already moving. Fire rolled over both gauntlets with a low roar, drying the nearest wall in a spreading patch. The Cragbone charged. Angle stepped into its path and drove the first burst into its skull, flooding the chamber white before the heat reached Sio a heartbeat later.

Wet fur became scorched hair. Cracks snapped through the pale plating, orange light showing inside them before the bone browned and blackened. The bear swung one armored paw. Angle folded under it, came up beside the shoulder and drove another burst into the same fractures before the limb finished its arc. The Cragbone staggered sideways, but Angle stayed close enough that it never found room to reset.

Heat chewed through the outer plates until black flakes powdered the floor. Cooked flesh thickened the air. When the bear collapsed, one foreleg still twitched. Angle stepped closer and sent another controlled blast into the damaged skull. The remaining plate split and crumbled into ash before the movement stopped.

Stone scraped behind Sio. His Scar tightened before his ears finished placing the sound, heat prickling beneath his right eye as weight gathered behind the pillar to his left. One foreleg loaded. One shoulder turned. Between the overlapping plates, a narrow seam opened.

Sio waited until the second Cragbone committed. A portal opened beneath his next step, and he came out beside its flank while the animal tore through empty air. Hot breath and wet fur replaced the cave’s chill. His tail curled around his forearm, hardened, and flattened into a dark edge along his palm.

The bear snapped toward him. The skin beneath Sio’s eye pulled toward the opening beneath its shoulder before his gaze fully found it. He opened another portal less than a metre away, stole the half-step the animal needed and drove the blade beneath the raised plate. Resistance held against his hand for an instant, then gave way wetly.

The Cragbone slammed shoulder-first into the wall and dragged him half a step before the blade came free. Sio backed away instead of following it down. The impact faded into dripping water, Sterling’s breathing and the soft crackle around Angle’s gloves.

Only then did Sio crouch. Grey mineral threads branched through one broken plate, but a pebble clicked behind Sterling before he could touch it. Sio looked up. The pebble rolled twice and stopped. Beneath his right eye, the Scar offered nothing except the same pull deeper into Veilhollow.

Sterling reached the first bear and crouched near its head. He lifted a blackened fragment, checked the jaw and ran two gloved fingers through the fur beneath the neck. Soot coated his fingertips. ”The records were right. This is a Cragbone.” His gaze moved toward the second body. ”And you killed both of them.”

”They attacked us,” Angle said, rubbing soot from one gauntlet. Sterling reached into his coat and produced a reinforced injector. ”I carry a neuromuscular suppressant for large fauna. If I’d had a clean shot, I could have put one down without killing it.” Angle stared at the injector, then at Sterling. ”Next time, say that before we finish the fight. Telling us now doesn’t help anyone.” Sterling opened his mouth, reconsidered, and crouched again.

He pressed two fingers beneath the first bear’s jaw. Something warm moved against them. Sterling’s hand stopped. A breath scraped out through the ruined mouth, carrying burnt meat and dust into the chamber.

The ash around the Cragbone’s skull shifted. At first Sio thought the draft had caught it, but black powder began sliding uphill, grain by grain, gathering over exposed flesh. Charred fragments clicked together. Pale bone pushed through the soot in fresh ridges, fur spreading behind it as if the fire were being unwritten. By the time the bear lifted its head, the plates Angle had burned away were whole again.

Behind Sio, the second Cragbone drew in a deep breath. The dark wound beneath its shoulder tightened until the split flesh met, and the mineral plates settled back over it with a low scrape. Sio rose with the tail-blade still wrapped around his arm and shifted half a step in front of Angle, while Sterling backed away until his heel struck the wall.

The first Cragbone pushed itself upright, but instead of returning to four legs it settled onto its haunches. Its spine straightened, forepaws resting against its knees with an ease that made the familiar shape feel wrong. Across the chamber, the second bear copied it, breathing slow and even, now that the wound had vanished.

Neither growled nor lunged. They sat among the ruined figures while burnt fur, cooked meat smell and hot stone fouled the air, and dust settled around their paws in the silence.

The first Cragbone raised its head. Sio stood directly in front of Angle, and from where he was those dark eyes seemed to settle on him. Its jaw opened with a dry crack, and a deep voice scraped through the chamber. ”We have waited a long time for you.”
