WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

The last of Ursa’s dust vanished into the dark, and the chamber stayed quiet long enough for Sio to hear water moving beneath the floor. The glowing lines Sa had left behind still threaded through the stone, splitting toward half a dozen passages before fading under mineral crust. Across from him, Rhea watched the openings with Gumm looped around her neck, while Sterling remained against the wall exactly where he had been.

Rhea moved first. She crouched, touched two fingers to the floor, then tilted her head as though something beneath the stone had caught her attention. Gumm lifted his face with her, several eyes opening at once. Neither looked back when they entered the leftmost passage. Sio watched Gumm disappear around her shoulder, his hand twitching once before he shoved it into his pocket. ”We’re not following them.” Angle looked toward the other tunnels. ”Wasn’t planning to.”

The dark edge around Sio’s forearm softened as he walked, loosening until his tail slipped free and settled behind him again. The Scar beneath his right eye had already begun pulling in several directions. A rail surfaced from limestone beside his boot, ran through shallow water, then vanished straight into the wall. Above it, a platform sign hung sideways from roots that had grown through its frame, leaving only a white zero visible beneath layers of calcite.

Angle brushed the sign as he passed. ”Still getting anything?” Sio stopped when cold water slipped over the edge of his boot. ”Too much.” The Scar pressed behind his eye, not toward one corridor but through the stone itself. One route continued beneath their feet, another climbed somewhere behind the wall, and a third followed the drowned track bed ahead before disappearing beneath a black stream.

Then one pull sharpened enough to make his eye water. Sio turned toward a stairway almost buried under mineral growth, its old handrail fused into a row of stalagmites. ”This one.” They descended while their footfalls changed from wet stone to hollow metal and back again.

Several ancient platforms met around a sunken pool below. Water had claimed the track beds, turning them into dark channels beneath broken bridges. Ticket barriers lined one edge, but calcite had swollen around their rectangular frames until metal and stone shared the same shape. Behind them, an old route board survived under a cloudy mineral sheet, colored lines crossing beneath the deposits before disappearing into cracks.

Sio stopped near the center. The Scar pulled so hard that Angle noticed. ”This it?” Sio stared at the buried board. ”I don’t know.” They searched anyway. Angle climbed onto the remains of one platform while Sio followed every connection the Scar offered, finding a service door sealed behind limestone, a shaft strangled by roots, and a submerged passage beneath the pool that continued somewhere beyond his reach.

Nearly half an hour passed before Angle dropped from the platform with dust streaked across his bare chest. ”We’re burning time.” Sio stood in front of the route board again. The Scar had not weakened. ”Maybe it isn’t the exit.” Angle frowned. ”Then why bring us here?” Sio pressed two fingers beneath his right eye. ”Could be stalling us. Or there’s something connected to this place that I’m not understanding.” Angle looked around once more. ”Mark it.” Sio scratched a line beside the stairs, and they left.

Far across Veilhollow, Rhea stopped beneath a ceiling split apart by roots and breathed in slowly. Cold mineral air came first, then water, old metal, damp moss and something cleaner moving across the fur beside her left ear. Her head turned toward a narrow break between two collapsed walls.

She pressed one palm against an exposed rail. A faint vibration travelled through the metal, too regular to belong to dripping water. Gumm slid from her shoulder, flattened himself enough to squeeze through the gap and disappeared. A moment later his chirp came from somewhere inside, followed by impatient scratching against stone.

Rhea widened the opening with her claws and squeezed through sideways. The passage dropped into a cylindrical chamber so deep that her eyes could not find the bottom. Ancient metal rings circled the walls beneath mineral growth, while stalactites hung between broken fan blades large enough to crush a carriage. Somewhere far below, one section still turned, each rotation ending in a low metallic groan.

Wind climbed the shaft and pushed Rhea’s hair from her face. She stood still long enough to feel its direction against both ears, then looked at Gumm perched proudly on a rusted support. ”You found air.” He chirped and lifted his head. Rhea leaned over the edge, listening to the machinery below. ”Not the useful kind.” Gumm climbed back onto her shoulder as though he had heard only the first half.

Back in the starting chamber, Sterling watched the last traces of footsteps vanish into the passages. He looked once at the glowing lines beneath his boots, then opened his coat and removed four black pieces no larger than coins. They clicked against the floor around the old bench, thin rods unfolding from each until a transparent field shimmered between them.

Sterling tapped the nearest device twice, watched the barrier ripple and seemed satisfied. He removed his glasses, folded his coat beneath his head and stretched out on the ancient bench. Several minutes later something heavy scraped through a side passage. A shadow reached the barrier, blue light flashed, and whatever had approached vanished with a startled howl. Sterling opened one eye, shifted the coat beneath his head and closed it again.

Sio and Angle had tried three more routes by the time cold had settled deep enough for Angle to rub his bare arms between turns. One carried them through an ancient carriage half-swallowed by rock, its windows packed with stone where passengers had once looked through them. Another ended where roots had lifted an entire section of platform and twisted its supports into the ceiling. The third curved long enough that Sio stopped trusting direction entirely. Then the scratch beside the interchange stairs appeared ahead of them, even though they had entered from the opposite side.

Angle stopped beside Sio. ”That’s not funny.” Sio touched the line and found fresh grit still caught inside it. The Scar pulled through the chamber exactly as strongly as before.

”Still saying this place matters?” Angle asked. Sio nodded, then stepped onto the platform again. This time he resisted the strongest pull and let the weaker connections press against the edges of his awareness. Some disappeared beneath collapsed sections, while others continued outward. Several curved toward the same point and converged beneath the interchange.

Angle moved toward a collapsed wall where a thin draft slipped through a crack. Heat gathered around one gauntlet, but Sio caught his wrist before he released it. Angle looked at him, and Sio pointed upward. Fine dust sifted from a fracture running across the ceiling. Behind the wall, several paths existed, but all of them lay beneath an enormous weight of unstable stone.

Angle watched another thread of dust fall between them. The heat around his hand died without argument, and they chose another passage.

Rhea found the first fresh footprint beside an underground stream. Gumm leaned from her shoulder while she touched two fingers to the damp edge, then she followed the prints until the chamber ahead began to look familiar. Several platforms surrounded a dark pool. Calcified gates lined one side, and a fresh scratch marked the stone beside the stairs.

Her ears tipped forward. ”They were here.” She crossed toward the old route board and stared through its cloudy mineral skin. Air travelled through several tunnels, but none carried the scents she wanted from the surface. Beneath her feet, old metal passed vibrations from water, machinery and footsteps too distant to place.

Sio and Angle emerged from the opposite platform less than ten minutes later. Both sides stopped. Gumm immediately perked up at the sight of Sio, who pointed at him before the creature could make a sound. ”Don’t.” Gumm settled more comfortably against Rhea’s neck.

Angle looked around the chamber. ”You find an exit?” Rhea shook her head. ”Airflow. Strong enough that I thought I had one. It came from an old ventilation shaft.” Her eyes shifted toward Sio’s mark beside the stairs. ”Every useful trail after that brought me back toward places like this.”

Sio rubbed beneath his right eye. ”Mine keeps bringing me here. Not near here. Here.” He tapped the old platform with his boot. ”I’ve checked everything I can find, and it still won’t stop pulling.”

Rhea crossed to the cloudy route board. ”Then something here matters.” Sio followed her gaze toward the buried lines. ”Yeah. We just don’t know what.” Angle looked back through the tunnel they had entered. ”Ursa started us in the center.” Rhea’s tail shifted once behind her. ”And everything keeps turning us back toward it.”

Sio wiped damp grit from his palm onto his trousers. ”Then we go back to where this started.” Rhea stared at the other passages for another moment before turning with them, and Gumm remained around her neck like he had already decided the competition did not apply to him.

By the time they returned, water had soaked through one of Sio’s boots. Angle wore a grey layer of cave dust from shoulder to ankle, and grit had worked into Rhea’s hair and along the fur of her ears. Gumm, irritatingly, still looked clean. A pale barrier shimmered around the old bench, with Sterling asleep comfortably inside it.

Angle knocked against the field. Sterling did not move. Rhea struck it harder with two knuckles, making one of the black devices chirp, and Sterling finally opened his eyes. He sat up slowly, found his glasses beside him and let the barrier dissolve while his gaze travelled across their condition.

”So,” Sterling said as he put his glasses on, ”which one of you won?” Nobody answered him.

They told him about the interchange, the buried routes, the ventilation shaft and the corridors that kept returning them toward central junctions. Sio explained that his Scar had led him to a place he knew mattered but could not use. Rhea described following real airflow only to find machinery instead of open sky. Angle added that both routes had eventually bent them back toward the same part of Veilhollow.

Sterling listened without interrupting, one hand still resting on the coat he had used as a pillow. When Sio finally said, ”We think we’re missing something,” Sterling looked at him, then Rhea, then Angle. His brows pulled together slightly, as though all three had spent hours looking for a door while leaning against its handle.

”Isn’t that obvious?”
