WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Tavi’s room went quiet after he pointed toward the floor. Rhea kept one hand on his shoulder while her eyes moved to the sealed wall beside the bed, as if she could already see through it. Sio looked at Angle, then at the corridor beyond the open door. They had found one person they came for, but Tavi had just told them the rest of the facility was still sorting people by whether the earth answered them.

”Can you walk?” Rhea asked. Tavi nodded too quickly and put his bare feet on the floor before she finished, but the first step made him favor one leg. Rhea noticed and crouched to check the ankle while Sio moved to the doorway.

”We don’t drag him into whatever is below us,” Angle said quietly, keeping his attention on the corridor. Sio nodded toward the room number outside. ”We also can’t leave him in the room they know he belongs in.”

Sio opened a narrow portal into the maintenance space they had used to reach the wing. Gumm slipped through first, returned with a chirp, then stretched one arm back through the opening as if personally certifying the route. Sio widened it enough for Tavi to cross.

”There’s a storage recess behind that wall,” Sio said. ”No camera, no patient scanner, and only one service entrance. Gumm stays with you until we come back.” Tavi looked at Rhea instead of him. ”You’re going down?”

Rhea finished tightening the cloth around his ankle and stood. ”Yes.” The answer seemed to frighten him less than hesitation would have. He crossed through the portal, and Gumm followed after pressing his face briefly against Rhea’s wrist. Sio left the opening small enough that Gumm could reach through but no adult could use it without him widening the path again.

Angle watched the portal close. ”That thing is going to teach children bad habits.” Sio started toward the hall. ”He learned them from me.” Angle followed with a tired look. ”That was my concern.”

They left Room 14 and followed the corridor toward the deeper wing. Rhea kept one palm against the wall whenever they stopped at a junction, testing the sensation she had found near the lift. Sometimes her ears shifted and she changed direction before Sio saw anything. Other times she frowned and pulled her hand away.

”It’s there, then it isn’t,” she said. ”Movement reaches me first. People are harder.” Sio glanced at the floor beneath them. ”Don’t try to make it do anything yet.” Rhea gave him a look. ”I know.” He raised both hands. ”Just confirming I have learned from experience.” Angle muttered that he had not learned enough and kept moving.

The public softness of R-4 ended one level lower. Painted doors disappeared first, then the warm lights gave way to white strips embedded in the ceiling, and the walls changed from padded treatment panels to smooth stone and dark glass. There were still no cages. The effort spent making the place look clinical instead of cruel bothered Sio more than bars would have.

Through the first observation window, he saw a woman sitting in the center of a circular chamber with both hands on a square of dark soil. Thin metal arcs surrounded the platform without touching her. A display outside the room measured pulse, breathing, muscle tension and something marked DOMAIN RESPONSE, while the value beside it remained at zero. Behind the glass, a researcher adjusted the chamber temperature and recorded the result without looking at the woman’s face.

Rhea slowed beside the window, and Sio followed her gaze to the next chamber. Different material there: pale stone under a man’s feet, water running through channels around it. Another room used packed clay. Another held rough black mineral slabs arranged in a ring.

”They’re changing the ground,” Angle said as he read the chamber settings. Sio looked at the columns beside them. ”And the pressure.”

The wall displays showed controlled variables beside each subject. Temperature. Weight. Vibration. Sound. Sleep deprivation. Repeated stress exposure. Rhea’s jaw tightened when the final category appeared.

EMOTIONAL AGITATION: ELEVATED RESPONSE CORRELATION

”They’re hurting them because K-17 showed stress can trigger something,” she said. Sio opened the attached note and found the same cold language Sterling had pulled from the previous facility.

UNSTABLE REACTIONS REMAIN NON-REPRODUCIBLE.

FALSE POSITIVES COMMON.

AUTHENTIC RECOGNITION REQUIRES DOMAIN RECIPROCITY.

Body mattered, but the body alone was not enough. R-4 had built an entire floor around discovering what the missing piece was, and every chamber was another attempt to force an answer out of someone who did not know the question.

Angle leaned closer to the display. ”So they know what they need. They just can’t make it happen.” Sio looked across the chambers. ”They know the shape of it. Not the reason.”

Rhea had already moved to the next observation window. Inside, a boy older than Tavi stood barefoot on a slab while the platform shuddered beneath him. His knees bent with every pulse. A technician increased the setting from outside the room, and the boy’s hands curled into fists.

Rhea pressed her palm against the wall, and Sio watched her instead of the chamber. He expected the red to return to her eyes or the black scratches to crawl across her skin, but neither appeared. She closed her eyes and tried to hold the sensation she had found upstairs.

Her expression tightened, then gradually eased as the tension left her fingers. ”Three in this section,” she whispered. ”No. Four.”

Angle looked through the glass. ”I can only see one.” Rhea shifted her hand slightly, her ears angling toward the floor even though whatever she was sensing had nothing to do with sound. ”There’s someone behind that wall. Two farther down.”

Sio watched the concentration in her face. ”What do they feel like?” Rhea frowned as the sensation moved through her. ”Not people. Pressure. Steps. Something moving through the stone, then stopping. Pipes are louder. Machines too.”

The connection slipped and she opened her eyes, pulling her hand away. Sio glanced toward the walls she had mapped without seeing them. ”That’s more than last time.” Rhea flexed her fingers. ”Last time I could barely tell the floor from my own hand.” When he pointed out that she had still found four people, she gave him a suspicious look. ”One of them might be a pump.”

Angle glanced toward the wall. ”If the pump starts screaming, we rescue it too.” Rhea almost smiled, but the boy inside the chamber stumbled when the vibration increased again, and her attention snapped back to him.

Sio checked the corridor. Two staff members were approaching from the far end, still focused on their tablets. He opened a portal into the empty examination room beside them, and the three slipped through before the workers reached the junction, emerging behind another strip of observation glass where the controls for six chambers sat within view.

The system was not searching for raw strength. It was searching for response. One display showed a woman standing with both palms against a stone wall while low-frequency pulses moved through it. Another had a subject suspended above soil, then lowered until their feet touched. A third alternated between different mineral beds while sensors measured changes around the platform. Most readings stayed near zero, and the few that rose were followed by the same tag.

NON-RECIPROCAL.

Rhea stared at the word while Angle frowned at the display. ”What does that even mean?” Sio remembered the R-4 report Sterling had read. ”Recognition between inheritor and domain.”

Rhea’s attention moved from the screen to the floor. ”They keep trying to make the ground answer them.” Sio looked at her. ”Maybe that’s the problem.”

She did not answer, but the chamber nearest them began another cycle. A beastkin woman was ordered to kneel and place both hands against a slab cut from reddish stone. The system increased vibration in measured steps while a researcher watched the domain graph.

Rhea crouched outside the room and placed her own fingertips on the floor. Instead of tensing, she let her hand rest there and listened to the machinery pulse through the structure.

Sio could see the moment she stopped reaching for something. Her breathing steadied, and the small movements of her ears ceased. She stayed still until her fingers shifted toward the eastern wall.

”Two guards at the next junction,” she said. ”One researcher walking away from us. Five subjects ahead, maybe six. There’s a larger machine below this floor.”

Angle looked down. ”Below this floor?” Rhea nodded slowly. ”It keeps hitting the foundation.”

The information came unevenly, but it came by choice. Silas stirred inside Sio, and the thought carried none of his earlier uncertainty. She isn’t moving the earth.

No, Sio answered. She’s listening to what moves through it.

Rhea opened her eyes. No red, no black scratches, only concentration and the faint irritation of someone who had finally made a stubborn tool work once and did not trust it to behave twice. ”We go around the guards. The prisoners are east.”

Sio opened a small portal into the service passage she had identified. They crossed in sequence, then moved along the wall until the next set of chambers appeared. Rhea checked twice along the route, and although the second attempt took longer, she found the same moving guards before they crossed into sight.

The last observation station was larger than the others, with a central display showing the entire testing level and response values attached to every chamber. Most remained flat. Two had recorded brief spikes earlier in the day, both marked false.

Rhea stepped toward the eastern corridor, but the numbers on the central display changed before she reached it. A soft tone sounded from the station, and the domain graph began climbing even though none of the active chambers had produced a new reading.

She stopped. Angle followed the rising line until a new marker appeared on the facility map, positioned in the corridor where Rhea was standing. Sio saw the source field populate as the nearest researcher looked up from behind the glass.

DOMAIN RESPONSE DETECTED

SOURCE: UNREGISTERED

Rhea stared at the screen. Another line appeared beneath the source field while researchers in two adjacent stations abandoned their chamber readings and turned toward the corridor.

RECIPROCITY CONFIRMED

The people inside the chambers were no longer the focus of the floor. Every nearby screen had marked the same location, and every set of eyes beyond the glass settled on Rhea.
