WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Sterling kept looking at them as if the answer had been sitting on the bench beside him the entire time. Water squelched inside one of Sio’s boots as he shifted his weight and narrowed his eyes. ”Obvious enough that you could’ve mentioned it before we spent half the day walking in circles?” Sterling slid his glasses back on, blinked once at Sio, Angle and Rhea in their various layers of mud and dust, then pointed toward the dim lines beneath the floor. ”Ursa said there is one exit. They never said one person could open it.”

Angle folded his arms, grey cave dust stuck to the sweat across his shoulders. Rhea’s ears tilted toward Sterling while Gumm remained looped around her neck, entirely too comfortable for someone Sio had crossed half of Veilhollow to find. Sterling crouched beside the lines. ”You found an interchange. She found a working ventilation shaft. This chamber connects to both. Either all three places matter, or Veilhollow has spent a great deal of effort building the world’s least amusing joke.”

Sio looked down at the broken pattern beneath the mineral crust. From this angle it no longer resembled a route map. It looked like pieces of one system that had stopped touching. ”So we reconnect it.” Sterling glanced up. ”That would be the first intelligent suggestion anyone has made since I woke up.” Rhea let out a short laugh before pressing her lips together, and Sio turned toward her quickly enough to catch the last of it. ”At least somebody appreciates me.” Sterling sighed. ”That was not appreciation.”

They returned to the interchange together. Without the pressure of racing, Sio noticed how thoroughly the cave had eaten the station. Water slid along the old track bed in black sheets, carrying pale flakes of calcite over rails that surfaced only in short rusted ribs. Ticket gates had become thick stone shapes with metal trapped inside them, and the route board hung behind cloudy mineral deposits like a memory the mountain had failed to erase.

Sterling knelt beneath the board and opened two devices across his palms. Rhea lowered herself beside an exposed rail and pressed one ear close to it. ”Again,” Sterling said. Angle placed two fingers against a strip of conductor Sterling had uncovered beneath the crust. Heat sank into the metal, controlled enough that it never glowed, and somewhere below them a dull vibration travelled through the platform.

Rhea lifted her head. ”Pressure changed.” Sio closed his eyes and let the Scar pull without following the first direction it offered. The interchange pressed against his awareness, then the starting chamber, then the ventilation shaft Rhea had described. Instead of asking where each route went, he concentrated on what each route touched. The pressure beneath his right eye rearranged itself. Three paths overlapped.

Sio opened his eyes and pointed toward a calcified service gate. ”Something behind that connects to her shaft.” Sterling studied the opening, then looked at Gumm. ”Finally, a problem designed for someone whose bones have no respect for geometry.” Sio held out an arm. ”Come on. Back to your actual family for five minutes.”

Gumm climbed down Rhea’s arm, crossed Sio’s wrist and settled against his shoulder. Relief had just enough time to reach Sio’s face before the creature planted two little limbs on the side of his head, used him as a step and stretched into the maintenance gap. Rhea turned away, but her shoulders gave her away. Sio stared into the hole. ”I crossed a monster cave to become scaffolding.” She looked back with the corner of her mouth still raised. ”You’re very stable scaffolding.”

The gap forced Rhea close when she leaned in to listen. Her hair brushed Sio’s shoulder, and beneath wet limestone, rust and old animal musk caught in the stone came a warmer scent he remembered from before Veilhollow. Sio did not notice the tension leaving his jaw until he breathed again and found it gone. That was inconvenient enough that he focused harder on the wall.

Rhea glanced sideways. ”You’re staring again.” Sio kept his eyes on the opening. ”I was thinking.” Her smile returned, small but immediate. ”Dangerous habit.” Before he could decide whether he had been insulted, Gumm chirped sharply from inside and scratched at something metallic.

Sterling lifted one hand. ”He found the latch. Gumm, push whatever feels expensive.” A metallic click answered from behind the wall, followed by a heavy thunk beneath their feet. Water trembled in the track bed. Far below, old machinery began moving with the slow groan Rhea had heard in the ventilation shaft.

Angle stepped to the exposed conductor when Sterling motioned him forward. Fire stayed inside the gauntlets this time; only heat moved, sinking through metal in a steady pulse. The route board flickered, died, then returned with one additional line glowing beneath the mineral film. Rhea’s ears snapped toward the tunnel as a draft reversed and pulled loose strands of hair away from her face.

Sio felt the change at the same moment. The path pressing against his Scar did not grow stronger. It stopped breaking. One continuous connection now ran from the starting chamber through the interchange, past the ventilation system and upward through stone that had been nothing but noise to him before. ”I have it,” he said, keeping his hand against the platform. ”Don’t change anything yet.” Sterling gave him an offended look. ”I had no intention of celebrating by unplugging it.”

The cave woke in fragments. Water drained from the track bed through channels hidden beneath centuries of buildup. Calcite cracked around gates that had not moved since the old world fell, and weak strips of buried light shone through translucent mineral deposits. The route board completed one line from end to end, pale and trembling but unbroken.

Gumm shot from the maintenance opening covered in white dust and landed on Sio’s shoulder with a proud chirp. Sio barely managed, ”See? Home,” before Gumm stretched toward Rhea again. He caught the creature around the middle. ”No. You picked a side.” Gumm wriggled free, returned to Rhea and curled around her neck while she laughed openly enough that Sio decided the betrayal had at least produced one useful result.

They followed the completed line upward. The route carried them through a tunnel where roots had replaced half the ceiling, across an old platform split by an underground stream, then into a steep corridor where the stone began smelling different before any light reached them. Damp earth replaced mineral water. Pine slipped into the air. Cold wind found the sweat at Sio’s neck and raised the skin there.

The final gate waited beneath a wall of roots and mineral growth. Two shallow depressions had been cut into the stone on opposite sides of its central seam. Sterling examined them, wiped grit from his fingertips and looked at Angle and Rhea. ”Those are yours.” Angle took the left while Rhea stood at the right, and the gate remained dead until both placed a hand into the depressions.

Stone shuddered under their palms. A white seam opened between them, widening until wind pushed through strongly enough to carry the smell of wet grass into the tunnel. Sio filled his lungs with it, then noticed neither candidate had moved.

Angle looked through the opening. Rhea’s tail had gone still behind her, and one hand remained pressed to the gate. ”If we guessed wrong,” she said, ”one of us stays here.” Angle’s thumb rubbed once over the strap at his left wrist. His eyes stayed on the opening for a moment before he looked at her. ”Together.” Rhea studied him, then gave a small nod, and they stepped across the threshold in the same stride.

Light raced backward through every ancient line they had awakened. Somewhere inside Veilhollow, the Vestige stirred. A voice rolled through the stone without coming from any one place, clean enough to feel untouched by the centuries around it. ”Second examination complete. Sunfarer recognized.” Angle stiffened, and before anyone spoke a second pulse travelled beneath Rhea’s feet. ”Earthfarer recognized.”

Sio’s attention snapped to her. Rhea had gone still as well, her fingers hovering near the bare wrist where the Baron’s cuff had once sat. The light climbed the gate in broken symbols while the Vestige continued. ”Earthfarer and Sunfarer shall walk together once more. What was divided must be made whole before—”

Static ripped through the chamber. The symbols scattered into fragments, the final words vanished beneath a burst of broken sound, and the lights went dark. Sterling stared at the dead wall for several seconds before rubbing both hands over his face. ”Of course. Thousands of years of preserved knowledge, and that is the exact sentence it decides not to finish.”

The gate kept opening. Daylight washed over stone, and they stepped out one after another into air that felt almost too large after Veilhollow. Sio squinted beneath the open sky while cold wind pushed through his hair. Wet grass bent along the mountain slope, pine and dark soil replacing the cave’s mineral taste, and somewhere below them water rushed over rock.

Rhea stopped after three steps. Her ears rose sharply, and Gumm tightened around her neck. Sio’s relief lasted one heartbeat longer before the Scar beneath his eye began to pull.

One route approached from beyond the ridge. Another climbed through the trees. Five more appeared along the lower road, then more until their connections pressed over one another. None led away from them. Angle’s gauntlets clicked as his hands closed, while Sterling stopped halfway through adjusting his glasses and slowly looked uphill.

A man sat on a boulder above the cave mouth with a long weapon resting across his knees, watching them as calmly as if he had arrived early for an appointment. Two figures stood farther down the ridge beside a broken pine, making no effort to hide. More shapes occupied the tree line. One leaned against a metal case while eating from a tin; another drew a cloth along the edge of a blade, never once glancing hurriedly toward the people beside him.

Sio counted until the Scar made numbers useless. Every approach path ended here, and the people holding them stood with the patience of hunters who had known exactly where their quarry would eventually appear. The wind carried a voice from somewhere above. ”There they are.”

More figures stepped into view while stone ground shut behind Sio, sealing Veilhollow and its buried world beneath the mountain again. Ahead, the slope filled with people who had come for him and Angle, and not one of them looked surprised to see their quarry walk straight into the open.
