WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

”There are more below us.” Rhea kept her palm against the Arcline floor while the carriage hummed around them. The vibration had changed since departure. On the platform it had been a steady note under Sio’s boots, but inside the moving machine it came in layers: the deep pull of the transport itself, lighter tremors from doors and partitions, and hundreds of small interruptions that vanished whenever the vehicle crossed a joint somewhere inside the buried route.

Sio watched Rhea’s fingers spread wider across the pale floor. ”How many?” Her eyes stayed shut. ”I can’t separate them.” Angle had already reached the inner carriage door and held one hand near the seam, testing the heat without touching it. ”Then we start with the ones we can reach.” Fern caught his wrist before the metal changed color. ”And if that door seals the whole section when you melt it?” Angle looked at her hand, then at the door. ”You could have led with that.”

Sterling’s voice crackled through Fern’s wrist display, thinner now that stone and distance sat between them and the surface relay. ”I have partial access to the modern overlays, not the Arcline itself. Organization partitions are piggybacking on old passenger sections. Some doors are theirs. Some are older than every government currently lying to you.” Sio looked at the smiling guide above the black core in his palm. ”Any chance you label the kidnapping compartments?” The guide answered immediately, ”Passenger comfort areas are located throughout the service.” Sio stared at it. ”Of course.”

Gumm leaned toward the inner door and stretched one small limb into the seam. He flattened the tip, pulled it back and made a displeased little clicking sound. Fern crouched beside him and found a newer locking plate mounted knee-high on the wall. ”Organization.” Caspian stepped closer. ”That one I can work with.” He touched two fingers to the edge of the plate. The screws jumped sideways in their sockets, then tore free together and struck the opposite wall with four sharp ticks. Fern caught the loosened housing, pulled the wiring out and bridged two contacts with the blade of her knife.

The door opened onto a corridor that looked nothing like a prison. Soft light ran beneath the floor instead of overhead. Wide windows looked into darkness outside, but faint reflections still showed old decorative lines etched into the glass. A row of low seats curved along one wall, sized for different bodies. One had a gap through the back for a tail, another was broader and lower to the ground, and modern restraint brackets had been drilled through all of them. Beneath the nearest seat, a child’s shoe rested on its side.

Rhea saw it before Sio did. Her hand left the floor, and the leather creaked under her fingers when she picked it up. The shoe was small enough to fit across her palm. She set it back exactly where it had been and moved ahead without saying anything.

The first Organization pair came around the next bend at a run. Angle heated the rifle barrel of the nearer guard until the man dropped it, while Caspian shifted the second guard’s momentum into the wall. Rhea reached them before either recovered. Her palm struck one chest, her knee caught the other under the ribs, and both went down hard enough to rattle the old glass. Sio opened a short portal beneath the first rifle as it skidded away, dropping it through to an exit behind Fern. The movement stayed clean until the Arcline leaned into a curve. Both portal edges dragged a fraction sideways, and pain pinched beneath his Scar. He closed them immediately. Still hates moving.

They passed a doorway where a pre-Fall projection flickered awake. A woman with long pointed ears knelt beside two children while fastening a strap around a travel case. One bounced impatiently on the balls of his feet while the other slept against her shoulder. The recording repeated beside a modern inspection table fitted with restraint cuffs. Fern touched Rhea’s arm. ”We keep moving.” Rhea nodded and placed her palm against the wall instead of the floor.

Her fingers stopped. Sio slowed beside her. ”What?” Rhea moved two steps, keeping contact with the wall. ”Not hundreds in one place. Spread out. Above us. Below. Ahead.” Another vibration passed through the structure and tightened her brow. ”Some are moving. Some aren’t.” Sterling answered through static, ”The Arcline may have multiple decks. Old maps suggest civilian service channels underneath passenger floors.”

Rhea turned toward a narrow maintenance door without an Organization reader. ”There.” Fern studied the seamless frame. ”Ancient.” The guide in Sio’s hand brightened and announced, ”Authorized personnel access only.” Sio looked down at it. ”You have been remarkably unhelpful for something that likes us.” The guide bowed. Fern found no modern lock they could exploit, so she pointed them onward.

The Arcline picked up speed. Pressure built in Sio’s ears and released with a soft click while the darkness beyond the windows broke occasionally into pale flashes from structures buried beside the route. Each flash painted the corridor for less than a second: restraint brackets, old seats, Angle’s clenched jaw, Rhea’s fingers sliding along the wall. Then a scream carried from somewhere ahead, thin at first and suddenly clear when an inner door opened.

Rhea ran toward it. The others followed her into a larger passenger hall where Organization personnel were forcing captives through two reinforced doors. The old room had once been arranged around circular seating, with faded projections of trees rising from the center. Modern cages had been welded between the benches. More than thirty prisoners packed the nearest section, and another group was being dragged toward a descending ramp. One guard struck a man across the back with the butt of his rifle when he stumbled.

Red flooded Rhea’s eyes. Her pupils narrowed inside it, and thin black marks surfaced beneath her eyes, not glowing or painted, but scratched-looking, as if something dark had dragged itself across her skin from underneath. A tremor snapped through the hall before she took her first step. It was not strong enough to throw anyone down, but every loose weapon jumped against metal at once, and the guards looked toward the floor.

Rhea was already among them. She caught the first rifle and drove its stock into the second guard’s wrist. A floor tile beneath a third man’s boot dipped just enough to ruin his stance, and her heel struck his knee while he tried to recover. Another guard fired. Rhea twisted aside before the muzzle finished tracking her, one ear angled sharply toward the vibration passing through the floor.

Sio’s Scar caught paths everywhere: bullets, feet, doors, captives shrinking away from the fight. He opened a portal beside the firing guard and dropped the exit low behind him. Gumm stretched one arm through, hooked the guard’s ankle and yanked just as Caspian redirected the man’s forward step, folding him onto the floor with a startled shout. Beside them, Angle planted both palms against a welded cage seam. Heat spread through the joint until the metal sagged, and prisoners pulled back from the glow while he shouted for them to move when it opened.

Rhea reached the descending ramp just as something below activated. The whole floor bucked under her, and a heavy barrier slammed upward from the ramp, catching her across the shoulder and throwing her into the circular seating. Sio heard the impact through his teeth. She rolled off the broken bench and landed on one knee with the black marks already spreading toward her temples and down the side of her neck.

Behind her, the air warped around a shape Sio could not hold in focus. It rose from near her lower back like a dark tail seen through water. A second blurred line crossed behind it, thinner and gone almost immediately when Rhea shifted. She pressed both palms to the floor, and every vibration in the hall seemed to reach her at once.

Her breath caught. Fingers flexed against the surface while the red in her eyes deepened. The Arcline’s motion, the guards’ footsteps, prisoners moving behind cages and the barrier machinery grinding beneath the ramp all crowded into her attention. Her shoulders locked, and her head jerked slightly as though the entire room had spoken into her skull at once. Sio called her name, but she did not answer, and a guard near the ramp raised his weapon.

Sio opened a portal between them. The moving Arcline pulled at the far edge immediately, driving purple pain beneath his eye, but he held it long enough for the shot to vanish into the opening and tear into the ceiling behind the guard. Angle crossed the remaining distance and drove a heated forearm into the rifle, bending the barrel down as he shouted Rhea’s name. Her ears twitched toward his voice.

The floor beneath the ramp sank by a few inches. The shift was enough. Metal shrieked as the barrier mechanism lost alignment, and the heavy plate jammed halfway through its next rise, leaving the passage underneath exposed. Rhea ripped both hands from the floor. The red in her eyes receded slowly, while the scratched marks lingered across her face and neck for a few seconds longer. The blurred shape behind her flickered once more, then broke apart like shadow disturbed by water.

She pushed herself upright before Sio reached her. He caught her elbow anyway, and she drew one sharp breath before straightening and pulling free. ”I’m fine.” Sio looked at the fading marks along her cheek. ”You look extremely fine.” Her ears flattened. ”Shut up.” The answer came quickly enough that he let her go.

Fern was already cutting restraints while Caspian dragged the jammed barrier higher with redirected force. Below it, another level stretched into dim light, with rows of containment doors lining both sides far beyond the hall above. Rhea stared down the ramp, then placed one hand against the wall. Her eyes stayed their normal color this time. Her fingers trembled once, settled, and slowly spread against the surface. ”There are hundreds.”

The Arcline guide chimed from Sio’s palm as if it had been waiting for a polite gap in the conversation. ”Next connection approaching.” Beneath Rhea’s hand, the wall answered with a new vibration coming from somewhere ahead.
