WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

The transfer map from R-4 was still rebuilding when Sio returned to the relay’s operations room. Warm air from the medical wing followed him through the inner door, carrying antiseptic and the faint metallic smell of old pipes. Inside, three projection tables washed the walls in pale light, fans hummed above the ceiling, and the battered kettle clicked as it cooled beside a dismantled rifle.

A woman in a medical coat stood at the central console scrolling through convoy data. Sio had watched her stitch a prisoner’s shoulder less than an hour ago. Now a man with an Aureole pin hooked through one ear was waiting beside her while she rejected something on his screen.

”Wasn’t she a medic?” Sio asked. Angle watched her shove the terminal back toward the pinned man. ”Maybe she still is.”

”I need access to the northern chain,” the man said. The woman peeled one stained glove from her hand. ”You needed it twenty minutes ago.” He swore and crossed the room with the terminal tucked under one arm. Nobody looked toward Fern for a ruling.

Sio found Fern near another projection table with Caspian and two strangers. One folded a route sheet, slipped it into his coat and headed for a side door while Fern was still speaking.

”Shouldn’t you stop him?” Sio asked. The latch clicked behind the stranger, and colder tunnel air brushed across Sio’s knuckles. Fern barely glanced toward the door. ”Why? He was leaving.”

”That somehow answered less.” Caspian moved the dismantled rifle aside so he could reach the kettle. Metal scraped over the counter. ”You’ll get used to it.”

Rhea had already stopped caring who belonged to what. She stood over the reconstructed transfer registry with both hands braced on the table, projection light running over her fingers. Tavi and the people rescued from R-4 were deeper inside the relay with medical teams. These records belonged to prisoners moved before R-4 fell.

Sterling appeared above the table as a waist-high hologram surrounded by floating windows. ”I matched thirty-seven transfer identifiers against fuel purchases, road closures, clinic records, toll clearances and vehicle permits.”

The woman in the medical coat glanced over. ”How?” Sterling straightened. ”Effort.” Caspian poured steaming liquid into a chipped cup. ”Money.” Sterling gave him a wounded look. ”Effort funded correctly.”

Routes unfolded over the table. One prisoner code left R-4 in an armored carrier, vanished at a clinic, then returned forty minutes later under a different vehicle number. Another escort record ended at a freight yard while the same subject code continued on a river manifest.

Angle leaned closer. ”The drivers don’t know the whole route.” Sterling opened a convoy that had changed registration twice in one day. ”Neither do the escorts. They receive the next handoff shortly before movement.”

The pinned man tapped the northern line. ”Then we shadow them until one stops changing names.” The woman in the medical coat reopened two western routes. ”I’m taking these.” When he reminded her that they did not know where the routes led, she looked at him. ”That is usually why people follow things.” She looked at Fern. ”Two vehicles.”

Fern only asked whether she had a second driver. ”If he answers,” the woman said, already walking away.

The door thudded shut behind her. Sio looked from it to the pin on the man’s ear. ”So he’s Aureole.” Caspian blew across his cup. ”Probably.” When Sio asked about the woman, Caspian told him to ask her next time.

A researcher at the back snapped shut a case of copied R-4 data and said he was staying because somebody had to finish rebuilding it. A driver Sio had seen unloading medical supplies reached past Fern, took a set of keys from the wall and disappeared through another exit.

”Did he just take one of your vehicles?” Sio asked. Fern kept reading the map. ”If it was ours, he did.” When Sio asked if she even knew, Fern replied, ”I know where it will probably come back.”

Sio rubbed his thumb along the cool edge of the table. A medic could take an operation, a man wearing Aureole’s symbol could be ignored, and a driver could leave with a vehicle without anyone asking permission. He still could not tell whether Aureole was disorganized or whether everyone here simply knew more than he did.

Rhea dragged one transfer chain into the center of the projection. The light snapped sideways across everyone’s hands. ”Here.” The file carried no names, only subject numbers, compatibility grades and an origin marker.

ORIGIN: VULPINE SETTLEMENT V-09

Sio recognized the sequence immediately. Rhea scrolled faster, nails clicking against the glass until two more matching records surfaced. One subject had left R-4 six days before they arrived. Another had been diverted before ever reaching it.

”Where are they?” Rhea asked. Sterling opened the convoy record. ”Transfer C-17. Medical handoff outside Harrow Ridge. Scheduled departure in nine hours.”

The pinned man stepped closer. ”If C-17 is linked to the northern chain, breaking it tells the Organization that chain is compromised.” Rhea did not look away from the three codes. ”Then don’t use that chain.”

”There could be fifty people at the end of it.” Rhea finally turned toward him, her tail gone still. ”There are three people here.” His jaw tightened, but he did not order her anywhere.

Sio looked back at the table. Thirty-seven transfer identifiers crossed the projection, each route broken into pieces that never seemed to touch. He followed C-17 from R-4 to the temporary clinic and then Harrow Ridge, dragging one fingertip through the holographic line until warmth gathered beneath the purple scar under his right eye.

He shifted to another route beginning three kingdoms away. Blue light climbed over his fingers, and the same pressure returned behind the scar. A third route produced it again.

Angle noticed. ”What are you doing?” Sio traced a fourth line. ”Trying to figure out why this feels wrong.” Angle watched him. ”You usually do that after touching something dangerous.” Sio nodded. ”Growth.”

The fourth route ended beneath his fingertip, but the pull under his scar did not. He moved to another convoy, and the sensation continued as if he had never left the first line.

Silas stirred inside him. They’re all part of the same operation. Sio moved again. That’s not what I’m feeling.

Different vehicles. Different kingdoms. Different handoffs. Yet every time he followed what the prisoners were doing instead of where the roads went, the pressure pulled in the same direction.

”These aren’t separate,” Sio said. Fern studied the map. ”They’re several hundred kilometers apart.” Sio nodded. ”I know.”

The pinned man came around the table while Sio placed two fingers over routes that never crossed. ”They’re all moving people from somewhere the Organization doesn’t trust toward somewhere it does.”

Sterling leaned over the projection. ”Can you see where?” Sio pushed against the pull, and pain struck behind his eye hard enough to smear the routes into light. He jerked his hand back and pressed two fingers beneath the scar until the room settled.

”No. I can tell there’s one end. I can’t see it.” Angle looked over the map again. ”Then following any one of them long enough gets us closer.”

The pinned man tapped C-17. ”Unless we break it first.” Rhea’s fingers stayed beside the village codes. ”You keep saying that like I’m leaving them inside.”

Fern stepped closer. ”We follow C-17 until we know the next handoff. If we can take the prisoners without losing the route, we do both.” When the pinned man asked what happened if they could not, Rhea answered before Fern. ”Then I take the prisoners.”

Sterling’s hologram flickered, and every window around him changed at once. ”Harrow Ridge just cleared its departure lane.”

Rhea turned so quickly her sleeve dragged across the projection. ”You said nine hours.” Sterling enlarged a live feed. ”I did.” Three armored carriers and two support vehicles were already leaving the handoff, headlights cutting pale lines through the dark.

TRANSFER C-17

STATUS: DEPARTED

SCHEDULE VARIANCE: -08:41

Caspian set his cup down hard enough for liquid to jump over the rim. ”That’s not early. They’re flushing the route.” Fern was already moving toward the vehicle bay while doors opened elsewhere in the relay and footsteps split in different directions.

”If you hit C-17 now, I lose the northern chain,” the pinned man called after them. Rhea kept walking. ”Then follow faster.”

Sio caught up with Angle while Caspian shouted for two vehicles. Someone deeper in the relay yelled back that one had disappeared ten minutes ago.

”Borrowed?” Sio asked. Caspian pointed at him without slowing. ”See? You’re learning.”

They reached the bay with one long black transport beside the open tunnel. Engine heat lingered beneath its hood, and cold night air spilled over the concrete. Rhea climbed in first, Angle behind her, while Fern opened a weapon locker and took only a compact sidearm.

Sio paused at the door and looked back. The supposed medic was gone, the pinned man had vanished through another exit, and the researcher remained under pale projection light rebuilding files as if nobody had just left for a convoy chase. Sio still could not tell which of them the Organization would recognize as Aureole.

Caspian threw the transport into motion before the rear door fully closed. The frame rattled over the tunnel seams, and Sterling reappeared above the dashboard with C-17 crawling across the map.

”Forty-one minutes before the road splits. After that, tracking gets unreliable.” Rhea leaned forward between the seats. ”Then catch them before the split.”

The tunnel mouth opened ahead, replacing concrete walls with black sky and cold air. As the transport accelerated onto the night road, Sio felt the same unseen pull tighten beneath his scar, one broken route carrying them toward the end shared by all the others.
