Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 44: Chapter 1 Awakening_1

With Simba’s departure, the Mudanjiang City toll station grew quiet again.

However, this tranquility was quickly shattered. A zombie staggered out, flopped to the ground, and meticulously licked the still-wet blood.

The blood on the ground was Wen Yu’s.

Then came a second, then a third...

Countless zombies slowly wandered over, drawn by the scent of Wen Yu’s blood, having tracked him all this way. fre.ewebnov el.com

Although Simba had stopped its pursuit, these brainless zombies would never give up.

A large number of zombies followed the trail of bloodstains Wen Yu had left, their shambling gait slowly bringing them closer to his location.

「...」

Wen Yu felt as if he had been dreaming. In his dream, he rode a Giant Dragon, dominated the heavens, and summoned countless terrifying demonic beasts with a wave of his hand. Watching the massive summoned horde devour the demonic tide, hearing the worship and praise from the survivors below, Wen Yu couldn’t help but chuckle foolishly.

Then, he awoke.

His foolish laughter tugged at his wound, and the pain made Wen Yu realize that his recent sense of invincibility had been merely an illusion; reality was cruel.

The wound had completely stopped bleeding. The ghastly, terrifying injury was a sickening white, and under the effect of Enhanced Healing, one could even see new flesh budding on the huge abdominal wound.

Enduring the severe pain and itchiness, Wen Yu carefully observed his surroundings. The guardroom wasn’t large and was very clean. Outside, the sky was beginning to show the pale light of dawn.

「An entire night had passed.」

The Soul Beast within his body kept sending ”hungry” signals. Only then did Wen Yu realize that he had been in Union with the Soul Beast for nearly five hours. The little Soul Beast was exhausted by now.

However, the Level 2 little Soul Beast could clearly sense that its master’s injuries were grave and was struggling to maintain its combat state.

Wen Yu’s heart softened, and he quickly deactivated the combat state.

Seeing the little Soul Beast appear on his shoulder again and affectionately nuzzle his cheek, warmth surged in Wen Yu’s heart. At critical moments, you’re still the most reliable, he thought.

Staggering off the bed, Wen Yu walked straight out of the guardroom.

The factory compound was large, but strangely, there wasn’t a single zombie in sight.

Ignoring this odd phenomenon, Wen Yu walked directly towards the Exchange Stone Pillar nearby.

Even in this small factory compound, there were two Exchange Stone Pillars.

”Check points.”

”DING. Remaining points: 971.”

Looks like I casually took out a lot of zombies blocking the way while I was escaping, Wen Yu thought.

”Exchange for an intermediate healing potion.”

”Exchange successful. 500 points consumed.”

Watching the intermediate healing potion appear on the Exchange Stone Pillar, Wen Yu unscrewed the cap and gulped it down.

The wound began to heal rapidly, the progress visible to the naked eye. An intense itching sensation made Wen Yu scratch the wound. He felt no pain, only dislodging a clump of congealed blood.

This effect is really potent! Seeing that his injuries would no longer hinder his movements, Wen Yu beamed. Come to think of it, I never used anything this high-grade in my previous life. This effect is truly amazing!

Oh, right! Cyclops! With his survival newly assured, Wen Yu immediately thought of the one most responsible for his escape from Simba’s clutches.

Wen Yu immersed his consciousness in the Soul Pet Space and at once saw Cyclops’s enormous figure.

Bones had already regrown where its lower body had been missing. Under a shining purple light, revolting tendons were constantly regenerating. Even on Cyclops’s face, the eye lost in its youth was slowly growing back.

TSK TSK TSK, this healing effect... Compared to this recovery speed, the intermediate healing potion is garbage! Wen Yu thought.

”Hey, hey, can you hear me?” Wen Yu asked with concern, seeing Cyclops’s body twitching continuously as its wounds healed.

Its good eye opened slightly, and then the enormous canine head looked around, as if trying to locate the source of the sound.

Seeing that Cyclops had regained consciousness, Wen Yu suddenly felt like joking. ”It’s me, your neighbor! Though, I’m your master now. Come on, make a sound and amuse your lord.”

Hearing Wen Yu’s playful teasing, Cyclops promptly rolled its eye, let out a huge yawn, and lay still once more.

This time, it was Wen Yu who blushed. Strictly speaking, there was no subordinate relationship between a Soul Master and a soul pet. Through the contractual link, an emotional bond akin to kinship formed between them—a bond even more reliable than enslavement.

Now, Cyclops was like family to Wen Yu. Just seeing Cyclops’s grievous wounds had made Wen Yu’s heart ache with a sharp twinge.

Don’t worry. It won’t be long before we go back and get revenge on Simba, Wen Yu silently vowed.

As if it had heard Wen Yu’s resolve, Cyclops, in the 2nd Soul Realm, opened its eye slightly. A savage, murderous intent flashed within it before vanishing. Cyclops would never forget the humiliation and injuries Simba had inflicted.

WHIMPER. WHIMPER.

Hearing the whimpering sounds from the factory compound’s entrance, Wen Yu spun around. A zombie appeared at the entrance, then a second, then a third—more and more were showing up.

Sigh, there’s never a moment’s peace, Wen Yu thought, just as he was about to grab his steel saber to cut down these disgusting creatures. Suddenly, an even louder commotion erupted from further away.

CRASH!

In the distance, a large truck slammed violently into the zombie horde, sending the foremost ones flying before it rapidly reversed.

At the same time, several private cars appeared from behind it, each one packed with humans.

”Quick, quick!” A middle-aged man, wielding a steel saber in one hand and a small, homemade wooden shield in the other, quickly jumped out of the large truck. He batted a zombie away with his wooden shield; the tremendous force of the blow caused the zombie’s head to explode on the spot.

The professionists scrambled out of the cars, their weapons hacking relentlessly at the zombies.

They have no discernible tactics; they’re clearly a group of ordinary people, Wen Yu observed. But the ferocity in each of them, their fearless expressions, shows they’ve completely adapted to survival in this apocalyptic world.

”Hurry up! You, over there! Hey, I’m talking to you! What are you doing standing foolishly by the Exchange Stone Pillar? Get over here, quick!” the middle-aged man with the wooden shield yelled at Wen Yu, seeing the zombie horde growing ever larger.

Huh? Is he talking to me? Wen Yu thought. Seeing the middle-aged man’s anxious expression, he quickly understood. It seems like they want to save me.

He didn’t bother telling them he wasn’t afraid of these zombies; Wen Yu simply ran over.
