Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

Chapter 14: Chapter 14 Police_1

CLANK CLANK. A clear, crisp sound rang out as Wen Yu pried open the anti-burglary door. He entered, casually dispatching a zombie attracted by the noise, then carefully surveyed the house.

It had been almost a day since he separated from the future Protector squad. Wen Yu had been killing zombies along the way while heading to Riverside Park.

As dusk approached, Wen Yu halted his day-long slaughter, found a residential complex, and slipped into a house to rest for the night.

After casually finding some food in the room and eating his fill, he went straight into the master bedroom, intending to recover his strength for the journey to Riverside Park the next day.

After a day of fighting, even with a professionist’s physical fitness, the immense exhaustion was unavoidable.

Lying on the soft bed, he briefly reviewed his gains and losses for the day.

Hmm, my physical fitness has reached 3 points, and I also spent 50 points on an F-Class protective suit. The haul isn’t bad.

The protective suit was worn under Wen Yu’s outer clothes. Resembling a bodysuit, it covered every part of his body except for his head and hands.

The F-Class protective suit could perfectly withstand the bites of ordinary zombies. This meant Wen Yu no longer feared being encircled by small groups of them.

As these thoughts drifted through his mind, Wen Yu’s consciousness gradually faded.

「...」

”Wait for me, Officer Xiao! Officer Xiao, wait for me!”

Not far from the residential complex where Wen Yu was staying, a group of four people was fleeing frantically.

Chasing them were three zombies. These, however, were clearly different from ordinary zombies. They were not only faster than normal people, but their fingernails had also grown significantly longer, as if each hand now bore five short daggers.

A deep roar sounded as its wide-open mouth revealed sharp, saw-like teeth.

”Damn it!” Seeing the portly man behind him about to be overtaken by three Level 1 zombies, a robust, middle-aged man in a police uniform at the front spun around. His firefighting axe whistled through the air, striking one of the Level 1 zombies and sending it stumbling.

”Hurry, Secretary Wang, hurry!” Officer Xiao shouted hastily at the balding, potbellied middle-aged man.

Seeing Officer Xiao intercept the zombies, Secretary Wang didn’t hesitate and bolted forward without a backward glance.

The young man and woman at the head of the group saw Officer Xiao, who had been leading, turn back to fight the zombies. The young man wanted to help Officer Xiao but was held back firmly by his girlfriend.

Seeing the fear and concern in his girlfriend’s eyes, the young man sighed but pulled her along, running even faster.

Officer Xiao stared at the three Level 1 zombies before him, a wave of despair washing over him.

Everything in the world had changed since yesterday, starting with the man-eating monsters.

The police station’s defensive forces were initially more than capable of dealing with the zombies. Furthermore, after the policemen discovered the secret of gaining points from killing them, everyone in the station with fighting capabilities successfully became professionists using the handguns available there.

With this strength, the police station managed to gather nearly a hundred survivors on the first day of the apocalypse.

However, disaster struck suddenly. Rats larger than house cats swarmed out of the police station’s sewers, biting anyone they encountered.

The professionists at the police station had initially intended to fight to the death. But who could have predicted that these rats, despite their size, possessed such immense strength? Their mutated incisors were even harder than steel.

The most critical point was their sheer numbers.

Thus, the police station’s defenses soon crumbled. All the survivors scattered, only to be relentlessly attacked by zombies in the streets. The entire group was completely dispersed.

By the time Officer Xiao had fled a considerable distance, only Secretary Wang and the young couple remained with him.

Perhaps it was bad luck, but as dusk settled, the scent of blood from Officer Xiao’s wounds attracted three Level 1 zombies. Consequently, Officer Xiao and the young man, both professionists, had to fight while fleeing and protecting the two ordinary people. They eventually reached the residential complex where Wen Yu was resting.

「...」

Wen Yu was awakened by a commotion downstairs. In this apocalyptic world, especially when alone, he naturally dared not sleep too soundly.

Slowly moving to the window, Wen Yu peered down. Under the moonlight, he could see the situation clearly.

A group of four was being chased by three Level 1 zombies. Two of them were professionists—likely warriors, judging by their physique and weapons.

Wen Yu found this strange. With the strength of two professionists, they should be able to handle three Level 1 zombies.

However, it was clear the young professionist at the front had no intention of helping; instead, he was focused solely on escaping.

Wen Yu squinted, watching the police officer at the rear desperately fighting the three zombies. A plan began to form in his mind.

「...」

I guess this is it for me, Xiao Lin thought, swinging his fire axe with all his might. A faint glow emanated from the axe—Fierce Hit, a warrior’s F-Class skill that slightly increased damage.

Unfortunately, after a full day of fleeing and fighting, Xiao Lin was exhausted. Even as a Level 1 professionist, his strength was waning.

His axe swing went wide, only managing to sever one of the zombie’s thighs.

Gasping for breath, Xiao Lin had lost all hope. He didn’t resent his teammates for abandoning him; he was merely disappointed.

Xiao Lin couldn’t help but think, If I hadn’t turned back, I probably would have survived.

Just as Xiao Lin steeled himself for a final, desperate stand, a figure suddenly darted out. The steel saber in the newcomer’s hand flashed coldly, beheading an unscathed zombie in a single stroke.

「...」

The one who saved Xiao Lin was, of course, Wen Yu. Upon seeing the fight downstairs, he had quickly assessed that the policeman, fighting three Level 1 zombies alone, was doomed.

After assessing his own combat strength, Wen Yu realized the three Level 1 zombies were merely walking points to him. He instantly entered combat mode and rushed to the scene, managing to save the policeman just in time.

Of the two remaining zombies, one was crippled with a severed thigh, while the other was covered in wounds, dark blood oozing continuously.

Level 1 zombies possessed rudimentary intelligence. Likely sensing Wen Yu was too formidable, they roared fiercely twice but dared not advance further.

Wen Yu channeled strength into his legs and dashed towards the two zombies. His physical fitness had reached 3 points from the day’s battles. Now, in his Union state, his 5 points of physical fitness utterly overwhelmed the two crippled Level 1 zombies.

With two swift slashes, without even needing to activate Soul Strike, Wen Yu dispatched the remaining two zombies.

「...」

Wen Yu briefly surveyed the policeman collapsed on the ground.

”Young man, thank you. If it weren’t for you, I’d be dead today,” Xiao Lin said, carefully observing Wen Yu. The young man before him appeared somewhat frail, yet his actions were swift and decisive. Moreover, the mysterious small orb on Wen Yu’s shoulder made Xiao Lin feel an intense sense of danger.

”It was nothing. Saving you was convenient. I do have a few questions for you, though,” Wen Yu replied, a smile revealing his white teeth. He stared at the policeman. Though he smiled, an increasing chill filled his eyes.

This was what had immediately come to Wen Yu’s mind upon seeing the police uniform.

He needed a gun; it would significantly accelerate his rate of advancement.

Even a bulletproof vest would be useful. At the very least, it could prevent him from being treacherously shot in the back.

As for whether this policeman would hand them over, it didn’t matter. Wen Yu had his ways of getting what he wanted.
