61: Chapter 61 Uncle Fu makes his move, AKA Ruthless King!Mu Xue’s Rental Apartment

”Thud...”

A dull, measured knock rang out.

Immersed in her dejection, Mu Xue jolted and instinctively turned toward the door, shouting, ”Who is it?”

At this time, her mother should still be at the hospital accompanying her father, who had just woken up.

Who could it be? The landlord? A neighbor? Or...

There was dead silence outside; no one answered.

Mu Xue’s heartbeat quickened for some unknown reason.

Hesitating, she moved stealthily to the door, held her breath, stood on her tiptoes, and pressed her eye against the cold peephole.

The dim sensor light in the hallway had already gone out. Through the peephole, she saw only a blurry, magnified darkness and the outline of the opposite wall—empty, with no one in sight.

”Who’s out there?! Speak up!” Mu Xue raised her voice, which even echoed in the quiet room.

There was still only silence.

Could it be... she had misheard? Was it a sound from upstairs or downstairs? Or was she so tired lately that she was hallucinating?

She leaned her back against the icy door panel, but her ears involuntarily perked up, catching every tiny sound from outside.

When a second sound failed to come, Mu Xue shook her head and muttered to herself, ”I really did mishear it.”

An unknown enclosed space

There were no windows here, and the lighting was deliberately dimmed to the lowest level, barely outlining the rough shapes of objects.

The air was stagnant, carrying the heavy scent of dust and rust.

Xiao Fan was tied to a hard wooden chair, his eyes covered by a thick black cloth and his mouth stuffed with a rag.

He had just struggled to twist his neck, trying to sense his surroundings, when he took a solid blow from a blunt club to the back of his head!

”Mmph—!” Intense pain exploded along with dizziness. He let out a muffled groan, his body pitching forward uncontrollably before being jerked back by the ropes.

Immediately after, a bucket of bone-chilling cold water was splashed over his head, making him shudder as his consciousness was forcibly dragged back.

”Who are you?! What do you want?!” The rag was roughly ripped out, and Xiao Fan immediately roared with what strength he had left, his voice echoing in the narrow space.

He tried to struggle, but the binding technique was professional and firm, the ropes biting deep into his flesh.

”Talk,” a burly male voice sounded nearby, as if pressed against his ear.

Before the words even faded, a heavy fist slammed into his abdomen without warning!

”Ugh, ah—!” Xiao Fan doubled over, his internal organs feeling as if they had shifted. The agonizing pain silenced him instantly; veins bulged on his forehead as cold sweat mixed with the water and poured down.

An enemy?

Amidst the intense pain, Xiao Fan’s mind was racing.

During those years overseas, he had indeed made some enemies, but his return to the country this time was extremely secret, and his actions had been careful enough. How had he been targeted so quickly?

Moreover, he had been back for less than a week and hadn’t had any conflicts with anyone, let alone offended anyone.

”Are you going to talk or not!” Another loud slap struck his left cheek. The force was so great that his head snapped to the side, and he immediately tasted the metallic tang of blood.

”You haven’t even asked a damn question!” Xiao Fan’s temper flared. Enduring the dizziness and pain, he craned his neck and roared.

He had only gone to Mu Xue’s house earlier. With a heavy heart, he had knocked once. Before the door even opened, he was restrained by his limbs at the stairwell corner, his mouth and nose covered from behind. After a whiff of a pungent odor, he had lost consciousness.

He woke up here, and these people started beating him without even asking a specific question!

”What is your purpose for coming to China?!” The burly male voice spoke again, the question direct.

So they really are after me... Xiao Fan’s heart chilled. Could it be that an overseas rival was bold enough to chase him all the way to China?

Furthermore, these people’s skills were quite professional; he hadn’t even noticed them. It must be an extremely professional team.

He forced himself to calm down. Though blindfolded, he tried to maintain a defiant posture, even curling his lip: ”I bet you don’t dare to actually do anything to me. This is... China.”

In the shadows on the other side, an elderly man in a well-fitted Zhongshan suit stood silently. It was Uncle Fu.

He listened to Xiao Fan’s words, his face devoid of expression, only giving a very slight nod.

Receiving the silent approval, the burly man didn’t hesitate. Another heavy punch landed squarely on Xiao Fan’s cheekbone, making a sickening thud.

”Talk!”

Xiao Fan spat out a mouthful of bloody saliva, his face contorted with pain. ”I won’t tell you anything!”

Then, footsteps sounded, unhurried, approaching Xiao Fan.

Xiao Fan tensed his body, preparing for an even more violent assault.

However, the expected fist did not fall.

A dry hand reached out, its movement almost gentle, and lightly removed the black cloth from his eyes.

The sudden light made Xiao Fan instinctively squint. It took several seconds for him to adjust before he could barely see the person standing in front of him.

An old man with a lean face, eyes as calm as still water, and a posture that was meticulous.

He looked familiar... very familiar!

Xiao Fan’s pupils suddenly constricted—that day in the alley, Mu Xue had stepped out of the car this old man was driving!

He is that Su Bai’s driver!

Uncle Fu leaned down slightly, meeting Xiao Fan’s disheveled but fierce gaze, and slowly asked a second question:

”Now, a different question. What is your relationship with Mu Xue?”

Xiao Fan’s mind raced through the pain and shock, the clues instantly connecting—the only person he could have crossed since returning was Mu Xue’s boyfriend, Su Bai!

Just because of that brief confrontation at the alley entrance that afternoon and a few words exchanged, the other party had actually used such thunderous methods?

This was completely illogical!

In a rivalry over a woman, who just flips the table and goes for the kill right away?

This wasn’t even close to any scenario he had anticipated.

Having ruled out the possibility of overseas enemies seeking revenge, Xiao Fan’s mindset strangely became a bit more settled.

At least this seemed more like an overreaction triggered by jealousy, however extreme that reaction was.

He endured the pain, spat out some blood, and tried to negotiate: ”Mu Xue and I just knew each other from before. That Su Bai sent you, didn’t he? Is this really necessary? Just because I said a few words to her?”

”Xiao Fan, eighteen years old.” Uncle Fu didn’t answer his question, but instead repeated the information from the files in a tone so calm it was almost robotic.

”Your public identity is a returning student, but in reality, you were active in several grey areas abroad. You have close ties to an international assassin group and have participated in several localized conflicts as a mercenary. For your age, this resume... is indeed impressive.”

When he said it was impressive, there was no praise or criticism in his voice, only a cold scrutiny.
