I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 200: Chapter 198: Shen Jun Is Here

”My son graduated from a top-tier university. He works at a big company now and makes over twenty thousand a month,” the Second Great-Aunt said.

Su Miaoyi listened for a moment before interrupting, ”Second Great-Aunt, if I call you ’Second Great-Aunt,’ then your son is from an older generation than me, right? And aren’t we relatives?”

”Our family connection is already outside the five generations of mourning, but we’ve always been close. You’re not home much, so you don’t really know the family situation. I get along very well with your parents,” the Second Great-Aunt said. ”Besides, what’s all this about older generations? It’s just that our branch of the family is a bit higher up in seniority. My son is the same age as you.”

’The same age?’

Su Miaoyi remembered overhearing them talking yesterday. ”I thought I heard yesterday that your son is almost forty.”

She’d heard them say, ”He’s already forty, you should hurry up and push him. Tell him to stop being so picky and find someone.”

”Not forty, not forty, he’s only thirty-eight,” the Second Great-Aunt said. ”Older men know how to dote on people; that’s a good thing. My son is tall and very handsome, and so many young women are chasing him. He just has high standards and is too picky, so no one’s good enough for him. But the moment I saw you yesterday, I just knew you were meant for our family. He’ll definitely approve of you.”

Hearing this, Su Miaoyi suddenly didn’t know what to say, so she just gave a dry laugh.

”Where do you live? It just so happens he’s off tomorrow, you two should meet,” the Second Great-Aunt continued. ”You’ll definitely fall for my son at first sight. He’s exactly the type that you young ladies like.”

”Second Great-Aunt, the thing is, I’m not looking for a boyfriend right now,” Su Miaoyi said from the sofa. ”I...”

The Second Great-Aunt suddenly cut her off. ”Not looking now? When are you going to look? You’re already twenty-six, that’s not young anymore, and you’re still not looking. At your age, most people’s kids are already in kindergarten, and you’re still not looking. You’re a girl; it’s not like you’re a man who can find someone whenever he wants. Once you’re past a certain age, no one will want you.”

”If you don’t find someone now, in a few years you won’t even be able to have kids if you want to. Listen to me, find someone now, get married this year, and start trying for a baby right away. Having children is a girl’s proper business.”

”You go out to work, but how much can a woman really earn? Staying at home to raise children and support your husband—that’s what you should be doing.”

Su Miaoyi suddenly chuckled. ”Second Great-Aunt, my monthly salary is quite a bit higher than your son’s. If you think I don’t earn much, then your son’s salary is even more worthless.”

The Second Great-Aunt suddenly went silent.

Su Miaoyi smiled again. ”Look at you. You stayed home to support your husband and raise your children, and at your age, you still have to worry about your son’s marriage. After you worry about his marriage, you’ll have to worry about his children. Our two families probably just aren’t fated to be. I’m someone who really hates trouble. I’m worried your grandson will take after your son, and I have no desire to worry about all that.”

”Besides, I earn so much money. You want me to stay home and be a housewife? I normally spend thirty thousand a month. If you don’t let me work, whose money will I spend? Your son’s? Would you be okay with that?”

The voice in her head suddenly said, ’Yeah, right. You pinch every penny and barely spend a few thousand a month.’

”How can you be so extravagant with money! Who lives like that?” the Second Great-Aunt suddenly screeched, her voice rising.

”That’s why our families aren’t fated to be. Let’s just drop the matter,” Su Miaoyi said. ”I wish you good health and a long life, Second Great-Aunt.”

After saying that, she hung up the phone.

The voice in her head said, ’You should have hung up ages ago.’

Su Miaoyi sighed. ”Just like that... who knows how those relatives will gossip about Uncle and Auntie now. If they only bad-mouthed me behind my back, I’d really say whatever I wanted. But in the end, they’ll be the ones talking about Uncle and Auntie.”

’What a pain.’

”You can answer it next time.”

’No way I’m answering that.’

Su Miaoyi let out a laugh and walked to the balcony to look over at Shen Yanzhou’s place.

She hadn’t been here for a while, and An’an had been staying with him. She wanted to see if he was home.

After looking for a moment, she thought she heard the sound of a TV.

So she went to knock on the door.

But when the door opened, she didn’t see Shen Yanzhou. Instead, it was... Shen Jun.

Su Miaoyi’s eyes widened, and her mind went blank for a second.

When Shen Jun saw it was her, his face lit up with pleasant surprise. ”You’re back?”

Su Miaoyi’s mind was still reeling. She nodded, opened her mouth as if to say something, but no words came out. In the end, she just managed a small smile.

”Come in, come in,” Shen Jun said.

Su Miaoyi scratched her neck and walked inside.

An’an ran over to her.

Su Miaoyi changed her shoes and walked further in, holding An’an.

Shen Jun asked, ”Have you eaten?”

”Not yet.” Su Miaoyi looked around; Shen Yanzhou wasn’t there.

”What do you want to eat? I’ll cook.”

”Oh, you don’t have to go to the trouble.”

”It’s no trouble, no trouble at all.” Shen Jun started walking toward the kitchen. ”I have all sorts of ingredients. Whatever you want to eat, I can whip it up in no time.”

”Really, you don’t have to.”

”Don’t be so polite with me,” Shen Jun said, his voice suddenly rising.

Su Miaoyi flinched inwardly, the polite refusals dying on her lips.

”Entertain yourself for a bit. I’ll be done in a little while.” As he spoke, Shen Jun took a drink from the fridge. ”Have something to drink first.”

Su Miaoyi wanted to say ”thank you,” but he had just told her not to be polite, so she swallowed the words.

Shen Jun went into the kitchen, leaving her standing in place, suddenly unsure of what to do.

’For some reason, I’m a little scared.’

After standing there for a moment, she suddenly thought to send Shen Yanzhou a message.

[I’m at your place.]

Shen Yanzhou replied quickly with a sticker of someone laughing hysterically.

Su Miaoyi: [?]

Shen Yanzhou sent another string of laughing stickers.

Su Miaoyi gripped her phone, wishing she could crawl through it and smack him.

Shen Yanzhou: [I’m not coming back tonight. You two get along.]

Su Miaoyi: [????? To be honest, I don’t know why, but I’m a little scared. You should probably come back.]

Shen Yanzhou: [Don’t worry, the novelty hasn’t worn off yet. He won’t lose his temper with you.]

Su Miaoyi’s mouth twitched. ’What does that mean?’

’What does that mean?!’

Realizing she couldn’t count on Shen Yanzhou, Su Miaoyi stood in place for another moment before heading to the kitchen. ”Let me help you. What can I do?”

”I don’t need you,” Shen Jun said. ”Other than letting you open the fridge, when have I ever let you in the kitchen?”

Su Miaoyi looked at him.

Shen Jun glanced back at her. ”Really, I don’t need help. Go wait outside, it’ll be ready soon. Go on, go on.”

Su Miaoyi had no choice but to go back to the living room.

She felt uneasy, wondering why on earth she had to come over right at dinnertime.

She kept stroking An’an’s head, and just as she was about to pet all its fur off, Shen Jun called her to eat.

She immediately put An’an down and went to the dining room.

She saw Shen Jun taking pictures of the table full of dishes.

She stood to the side.

”Sit.”

Su Miaoyi waited for him to sit down before taking a seat herself.

”Try it,” Shen Jun said. ”My cooking skills have improved a lot these past few years.”

Su Miaoyi looked at the table full of dishes—they were all her favorites.

Shen Jun served her some food. She took a bite. ”It’s delicious.”

Shen Jun was instantly delighted and broke into a smile.

He had specifically practiced just to surpass the cooking skills of Zhuang Yanzheng’s mother.

It smelled so good.

Su Miaoyi was so captivated by the delicious food that she forgot all her earlier restraint.

Seeing how heartily she was eating, Shen Jun smiled so wide his eyes nearly disappeared. He posted the photos of the food in a group chat along with a message: [So what if some people found out earlier than me? Can they see her whenever they want, like I can?]
