I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 198: Chapter 196: Can See the Murder Scene

Shen Yanzhou and Shen Shilan tactfully and discreetly explained the whole situation.

After they finished, Shen Jun and Xia Ye stared at the two of them without a word.

Shen Shilan and Shen Yanzhou took a sip of water in perfect unison, watching their parents’ disbelieving expressions.

”Are you two in cahoots, trying to fool us?” Shen Jun asked. ”Just listen to yourselves.”

Shen Shilan and Shen Yanzhou put down their water glasses.

Shen Shilan said, ”You saw her today. That’s the best explanation there is.”

Shen Jun was speechless. He rubbed his ear, then scratched his forehead.

Xia Ye seemed to have completely frozen.

”Mom, Dad, it’s not that we didn’t want to tell you,” Shen Yanzhou said. ”The last time I brought up her identity with her, I was almost struck by lightning for real.”

Xia Ye blinked a few times. ”That’s right. The weather was so nice today, but when we left the mall, it suddenly became overcast. Then on the way home, it suddenly cleared up again.”

”So we decided not to force it or make a big deal out of it,” Shen Shilan said. ”We’d just act like we knew nothing and let things develop naturally. We were bound to run into her now that she’s back. The main issue is that she doesn’t have her memories, so approaching her might be a burden.”

With a grim expression, Shen Jun asked after a long moment, ”Does Qin Chengyuan know?”

”He knows,” she said in a low voice.

Shen Jun suddenly shot up from the sofa and started walking out of the living room. He took a few steps, then stormed back. ”He knows, but I don’t!”

”Well, he’s the father. Of course he should know,” Xia Ye said, listening to him shout.

”And I’m her maternal uncle! Hmph!” With that, Shen Jun stormed out of the living room.

Shen Shilan and Shen Yanzhou exchanged a glance.

Xia Ye took Shen Shilan’s hand. ”This is a good thing, a good thing.”

Shen Shilan nodded with a smile. ”She doesn’t remember, but... she’s still the same as before.”

Xia Ye was so happy that tears started to fall again.

When she cried, Shen Shilan felt like crying too.

Shen Yanzhou watched the two of them, then discreetly left the living room.

As soon as he stepped outside, he saw his dad walking out with a large bag. ”Dad, where are you going?”

Shen Jun ignored him, carrying the bag as he walked toward the garage.

Shen Yanzhou caught up to him. ”Dad, she’s not at Weiyang Palace.”

Shen Jun didn’t believe him and kept walking.

”Su Miaoyi’s younger brother got his college entrance exam scores today, so she went back to the old district,” Shen Yanzhou said, keeping pace with him.

Shen Jun turned to look at him, having only heard the last part. ”Why did she go to the old district?”

”Su Miaoyi’s uncle and aunt live there.” Shen Yanzhou took the bag from his father’s hand. It was full of clothes.

Shen Jun fell silent, then turned and started walking back.

Shen Yanzhou followed, still carrying the bag.

...

「The Old District」

Su Miaoyi gave all the things she’d bought to Cheng Jue.

A phone, a tablet, a computer—she had bought them all.

”I already gave him money to go buy things himself, why did you buy all this for him?” Ge Yu said. ”How much was it? I’ll give you the money.”

”Auntie, it’s a gift from me,” Su Miaoyi said with a smile. ”Uncle, Auntie, you both know I’m working at the police station now. I’ve earned some money recently, so don’t worry. This didn’t cost much.”

Ge Yu and Cheng Yong exchanged a look. ”Miaomiao, since we’re on the topic, we’re going to nag you a bit. We don’t know why you suddenly started working at the police station, and there’s a lot we don’t quite understand. But... that job is dangerous. That time you were in the hospital...”

”What hospital stay?” Cheng Jue suddenly asked. ”When? What happened?”

”That was last year,” Su Miaoyi said.

”Don’t change the subject,” Cheng Yong said.

Cheng Jue wanted to say more, but couldn’t get a word in.

”What we’re trying to say is, you must, absolutely must, be careful,” Ge Yu said, holding her hand. ”Your safety has to come first, no matter what.”

”Okay, I know,” Su Miaoyi said. ”Uncle, Auntie, please don’t worry.” ℯ

That evening, after dinner, they chatted for a while and made plans for Cheng Jue’s summer vacation.

They planned to take a trip together later on.

They mostly focused on arranging the celebration banquet for his university acceptance.

Where to hold it, and when.

Once everything was settled, Cheng Yong and Ge Yu went to their room to sleep.

Su Miaoyi and Cheng Jue went to his room to play video games.

”Can you even play? You’re kinda terrible,” Su Miaoyi said.

”You’re the one who’s terrible, and you’re calling me out?” Cheng Jue retorted. ”Look at your stats. You’ve died six times in three minutes.”

Su Miaoyi clicked her tongue. ”I’m disorienting the enemy. What would you know?”

Cheng Jue snorted with laughter.

After Su Miaoyi fed the enemy another kill for the umpteenth time, Cheng Jue sighed. ”Sis, why did you want to work at the police station?”

”I like it,” Su Miaoyi answered.

”How come you didn’t like it before?” Cheng Jue asked.

”Did I ever say I didn’t like it?” Su Miaoyi replied, her character in the game activating its sprint ability and charging forward recklessly. Cheng Jue couldn’t even catch up.

She charged into a mob of enemies, flailed wildly, and was killed.

Cheng Jue sighed again. ”Such a brute. The people we got matched with have amazing tempers; no one’s even cursed you out yet.”

Su Miaoyi said, ”I used to be really good. I just haven’t used this hero before.”

Cheng Jue didn’t say anything.

”Why aren’t you saying anything?” Su Miaoyi looked at him.

Cheng Jue glanced at her and changed the subject. ”So, about the police station... how did you get a job there? Don’t you have to graduate from the police academy or pass a bunch of exams to get in?”

”It’s not an official position. I was hired as a consultant, you could say,” Su Miaoyi said.

”A consultant?” Cheng Jue tilted his head to look at her.

Su Miaoyi met his gaze, paused, and then said, ”If I told you I can see murder scenes, would you believe me?”

Cheng Jue’s character in the game kept walking straight ahead, right under an enemy turret, and was obliterated in a few hits.

His face seemed to freeze. He looked utterly stunned, trying to gauge whether Su Miaoyi was just messing with him.

She didn’t seem to be kidding. ”You can really see them?”

Su Miaoyi nodded. ”Why else would they have hired me?”

Cheng Jue put down his phone, having lost all interest in the game. ”What kind of things do you see? For example? How do you see them?”

”The scene of the crime, the way the killer committed the murder,” Su Miaoyi said. ”As for how I see it, it’s not always the same. Sometimes the vision just comes to me. Other times, it’s through the victim’s wounds. And sometimes... it depends on the timing, I guess.”

Cheng Jue’s mouth hung open. After a long moment, he asked, ”You’re really not lying to me?”

Su Miaoyi looked back down at her game. ”Why would I lie to you about something like this?”

”Because you think it’s fun. you lie to me all the time,” Cheng Jue said. ”That’s the kind of reputation you have with me.”

Su Miaoyi: ”...”

Cheng Jue fell silent again for a long while, thinking about everything that had happened recently. ”So, when we were in Jiangcheng before the New Year... was it because you saw something that you ended up at the police station?”

”Yes,” Su Miaoyi said.

A part of Cheng Jue still found it hard to believe, but it was the only explanation that made sense of everything. ”Why did you suddenly start seeing these things?”

Su Miaoyi’s gaze wavered. ”I don’t know. I just suddenly could.”

’She wasn’t lying; she really didn’t know why she could see these things.’

’It seemed to be the price for coming back to life.’

’But this price... Even though empathizing with the deceased meant experiencing the sensation of death, and even though sleepwalking to the sites where bodies were buried, hidden, or dumped was incredibly dangerous, to her, this ability had always been a help.’
