I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 187: Chapter 185: I’m on Vacation?

In the morning, when Su Miaoyi checked the news online, netizens were simply discussing the case.

But by evening, the tide of public opinion had turned.

Everyone was saying that the killer had actually been found—it was Xu Jinlan.

But she hadn’t been arrested. They claimed the entire police department was just pretending to work on the case and had actually gone on vacation long ago.

Someone else leaked that Xu Jinlan was related to someone on the criminal investigation team, which was why she hadn’t been arrested.

And now, they were just trying to find a scapegoat to protect Xu Jinlan.

Su Miaoyi had been home all day, completely in the dark about any progress at the police station.

And then the online discourse turned into this by evening.

She stared at the posts and comments online.

She figured her colleagues who had pulled an all-nighter yesterday would be crushed if they saw this news.

They had worked so hard, staying up all night to crack the case, only to be accused of faking it and taking a vacation.

’Who the hell is on vacation?’

Su Miaoyi’s heart ached for them from afar, so much that it felt like it was bleeding.

But her sympathy was useless; there was nothing she could do to help.

This made Su Miaoyi even more anxious.

All day, aside from eating and standing in front of her whiteboard, she had just been pacing around her home in circles.

The floors were about to be worn smooth.

After seeing the news online, she started pacing again.

Pacing helped alleviate her anxiety, but it had one downside: it made her hungry fast.

She had already eaten three meals. This would be her fourth.

Feeling hungry again, she glanced at the time and decided to go downstairs, eat out, and take a walk while she was at it.

But she had barely been walking along the road for two minutes after leaving her residential complex when a car suddenly sped toward her.

Su Miaoyi didn’t even have time to look back; she dodged instantly just from the sound.

Only after reaching a safe spot did she turn her head to look.

Her eyes were filled with a cold, hostile aura.

The car screeched to a halt. The door slid open, and several people got out.

At that moment, Su Miaoyi became the voice in her head: ’That’s a lot of people. Aren’t you going to run?’

’Don’t you want to know who came looking for you?’

”But there are quite a few of them,” Su Miaoyi said.

’We can take them.’

As they spoke, a Rolls-Royce pulled up behind the first car.

The driver got out, jogged to the side of the car, and opened the rear door.

The person inside emerged.

Su Miaoyi closed her eyes for a second, and the hostile aura in them vanished.

She blinked a couple of times, looked at her own hands, and whispered, ”And now you’re checking out again.”

The voice in her head said, ’I’ve never seen someone put on such an act. It makes me want to puke.’

”You think I don’t want to puke?” Su Miaoyi whispered back.

’The one with slower reflexes gets to deal with it.’

”I already reacted when I heard the car, and then you suddenly took control of my body and moved.”

’You’re just slow. Stop making excuses.’

Before Su Miaoyi could say anything else, she saw the man walking toward her.

The eight people who had gotten out of the first car also closed in around her.

Su Miaoyi looked at the man in the lead. He seemed a little familiar, but she couldn’t place him. ”What do you want?”

”You’re Xu Jinlan’s relative,” the man stated, more than asked.

Su Miaoyi was confused.

”You’re the one who told the police not to arrest her, aren’t you?”

Su Miaoyi just stared at him. ’?????’’

’Since he mentioned Xu Jinlan, does this guy... belong to the Liu Family?’

She realized why he looked familiar. He bore some resemblance to Liu Namo.

Zhuang Yanzheng had mentioned it.

Liu Namo had an older brother named Liu Beiqing.

”Liu Beiqing?” Su Miaoyi asked.

”So you’ve investigated our family that thoroughly?” Liu Beiqing looked at her. ”Then you should know we aren’t pushovers. What’s this? Bullying us because we’re from out of town? You won’t investigate the case, won’t arrest the killer.”

”The police are still investigating the case. We will definitely give the deceased and his family an explanation,” Su Miaoyi said.

”Investigating? How are you investigating? Who’s investigating? You’re on vacation taking a stroll. You tell me, who’s investigating? And how?”

Hearing his words, Su Miaoyi froze for a moment, then it dawned on her.

’The person they’re saying is on vacation online... they’re talking about me!’

’As if I wanted to be on leave!’

Su Miaoyi calmed herself down a little and explained, ”Mr. Liu, I can understand how you feel, given what’s happened...”

”What do you understand? You don’t understand anything. It wasn’t your family member who died, so of course you don’t understand,” Liu Beiqing said. ”My mother has fainted multiple times since last night. My father’s hair turned white overnight. My only brother was murdered, and yet you people aren’t arresting the killer. Instead, you’re trying to figure out how to absolve her!”

”This is Jinghai, and you think you can bully outsiders. Too bad for you, you picked on the wrong people this time!”

”Mr. Liu, please calm down,” Su Miaoyi said. ”I have no relationship with Xu Jinlan. Before this case, I didn’t even know who she was.”

”You don’t know her? If you don’t know her, why were you recused from the case? Why?” Liu Beiqing demanded.

”You yourself said I was recused, not on vacation. Isn’t my recusal meant to ensure the fairness and impartiality of the investigation?” Su Miaoyi countered.

Liu Beiqing was about to say more.

But Su Miaoyi cut him off. ”Furthermore, if you’re certain Xu Jinlan is the killer, please present sufficient evidence to prove it. If you can prove she’s the murderer, the police will arrest her immediately. If you don’t have sufficient evidence, then what you’re doing right now is obstructing the investigation.”

”Because of your unsubstantiated accusations, the real killer is probably hiding in the shadows, secretly celebrating. And because of your accusations, you could very well be making this investigation more difficult.”

”Do you want to get justice for your brother, or do you just want to find a random scapegoat and close the books?”

Liu Beiqing stared at her for a moment, then scoffed. ”Nice words. But they’re just excuses for you to protect Xu Jinlan.”

”Where did you hear that I have a connection to Xu Jinlan?” Su Miaoyi’s patience wore thin. ”What is our relationship? Be specific.”

Liu Beiqing didn’t answer.

”So you really do just make up rumors out of thin air.” Su Miaoyi snorted. ”What are you trying to do with all these people? Kidnap me in broad daylight? Or start a street fight?”

Liu Beiqing looked at her. ”He was my only brother. No matter the cost, I will get justice for him.”

”And your so-called justice is to randomly grab someone before the truth is even clear?” Su Miaoyi said.

In his current state, Liu Beiqing was no longer listening to Su Miaoyi. ”It’s just the Ji Family. Do you really think Ji Sheng is still in power? I’d like to see how long the people behind the Ji Family can protect you once this blows up.”

Su Miaoyi looked at him, wondering why he was suddenly dragging the Ji Family into this.

’Who on earth has been feeding him information? It’s all completely wrong.’

’If the Ji Family still had someone backing them, would they really be so polite when talking to me?’

”If you don’t arrest the killer, then the Ji Family can forget about ever seeing you again,” Liu Beiqing said.

The corner of Su Miaoyi’s mouth twitched.

The eight men around them moved forward to grab her.

Seeing the burly men advance, Su Miaoyi sidestepped them and turned to run back toward her residential complex.

The eight men immediately gave chase.

Su Miaoyi sprinted forward without looking back.

’What are you running for?’ the voice in her head asked.

”There are so many of them,” Su Miaoyi said.

’Can’t you take them?’ the voice said.

”I can,” Su Miaoyi said.

’Then why are you running?’

”Because I’m slow.”

As Su Miaoyi said this, she reached the complex gate, scanned her face to get in, and pushed the gate shut behind her. ”You can’t even outrun me, and you think you can catch me? Keep dreaming.”
