Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person

Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Food Delivery to Your Door

Outside the safety door, the pain and fawning on Chongzi’s face vanished the moment the door closed, replaced by sinister malice. Enduring the agony of a fractured bone, he muttered softly to the Brother Xiang lying on the ground.

“Brother Xiang, bringing you here is the best a brother can do. You’re already dead, so don’t hold me back. Help a brother one more time, lure those damn things over with your blood and kill those bastards, it’s also a way to avenge you. Thoughtful of me, right? Hehe…”

While saying this, Chongzi’s face twisted as he reached out and smeared blood firmly on the eighth-floor safety door. Looking at the blood-soaked door panel, he still felt it wasn’t enough and considered smearing some on the walls.

“You bastards, you dared to be so arrogant, breaking my arm, I’ll have your damn lives!”

Chongzi excitedly smeared the blood, knowing that zombies climbed stairs with difficulty, but however hard it may be, if they kept climbing, they’d eventually reach them. It was as if he could already see the scene of the zombies tearing into Zhang Su and the others.

“Oh, are you planning to draw talismans to curse us, or to draw barriers to protect us?”

Chongzi was standing in the middle of the eighth-floor staircase when he suddenly noticed that the tightly closed safety door was unbeknownst to him pushed open at some point. Zhang Su was leaning against the door frame, looking at him with a half-smile, with two pairs of cold eyes behind him.

“I, I… I.”

Chongzi was so frightened he fell to the ground with a thud.

He never expected that they would double back so quickly!

In his experience, at times like this, Zhang Su and his group should be happily counting supplies. Why did they have time to come out and deal with him?

So strange…

“Did you guys see that? This is human nature! The danger zombies bring is evident, but the evil of human nature catches you off guard!”

Zhang Su slightly tilted his head to speak to the two people behind him.

“Die!”

Chongzi knew he couldn’t defend himself at this point, became utterly frantic, and threw a wooden board beside him at Zhang Su, then stood up and took off up the stairs.

Bang.

Zhang Su dodged the board, blocking Zheng Xinyu who was eager to chase Chongzi, listening to Chongzi’s footsteps as he slowly and casually headed upstairs. Climbing the stairs, he began to whistle a soothing tune.

The sky grew darker, and the whistling echoed eerily through the bloodstained stairwell.

Chongzi ran panicked upstairs, hearing the cold whistle behind him made his bladder tighten, it was as if a death knell urging him, or the sinister laughter of Yama from the underworld.

“The rooftop, go to the rooftop, getting to the rooftop means getting to the second unit, yes, yes!”

With that in mind, he quickened his steps, but tripped from not lifting his foot enough, and despite the pain all over, he got up without making a sound and continued running.

When Chongzi, panting heavily, finally reached the door leading to the rooftop, he saw the solid iron lock, and his heart sank instantly.

“Damn it, shit, shit.”

Chongzi pulled at the big lock; it wouldn’t budge. Frustrated and anxious, he banged on the door violently, but his skinny body couldn’t make any impact on the door; the sturdy door remained unmoving.

“Calm down, calm down, there must be a way, there has to be a way, I can’t just sit and wait for death, I can’t die, damn it, shit!”

Chongzi muttered nervously, but hearing the whistle getting closer, he could even see several figures coming up through the gap in the staircase, and the anxious mood almost engulfed him.

“Right, the elevator!”

Chongzi looked towards the twelfth-floor safety door, his eyes focusing, suddenly remembering the elevator in the first unit stopped on the twelfth floor. At that time, he and Brother Xiang had hesitated whether to take the elevator or not.

He had overlooked an important issue: the municipal power supply had already been cut off. The community’s emergency generator had continued to power the elevator, but only for less than an hour; when Brother Xiang was killed, the elevator had already lost power.

“Haha, heaven is not ending me, you bastards just wait for me!”

Chongzi’s face broke into a malevolent smile, and thinking this, he leaped five steps at a time down to the twelfth floor, smiled coldly at the staircase corner, opened the door, and rushed in.

However, when Chongzi barged into the twelfth floor, he was instantly stunned.

Whether the elevator was still on the twelfth floor was something he couldn’t see because blocking his path was a group of zombies!

With ash-gray skin and blood red pupils, after several days had passed, the zombies emitted a faint putrid smell, gritted their teeth noisily, and let out low growls punctuated by thick phlegm stuck in their throats…

The violent impact on his senses, sight, hearing, and smell combined as Chongzi stared blankly at the zombies inches away, scared into peeing on himself, his crotch instantly wet.

Seven or eight zombies were originally wandering aimlessly on the twelfth floor. Never did they expect a meal to deliver itself, revealing their savage nature, they pounced towards the safety door with fangs bared and claws outstretched.

“Ah…”

A scream full of terror rang out, but before he could turn around to open the door, he was tackled to the ground by the zombies.

Splat.

His upper body slammed to the ground, just in time to see Zhang Su and the others reaching the midway point of the eleventh floor.

“Save, save me!”

Chongzi reached out to Zhang Su and the others, as if they were the light at the end of the tunnel, but the powerful force dragged him into the hallway.

The safety door slowly closed, the tragic screams didn’t last long, bright red blood flowed from the door cracks, leaving behind only the faint sound of crunching.

Zhang Su walked up to the twelfth floor, relocked the safety door, and his extraordinary hearing allowed him to hear more clearly the sound of zombies pulling out innards, the sound of chewing, and even the sound of swallowing, which made his heart churn with unease.

He gestured to the two women, and they headed downstairs together.

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan had heavy expressions, feeling very complicated.

Some things, though you know what choice is right, you might not be able to do it; even if you can do it, it doesn’t mean your heart won’t have emotions…

This was what the two were experiencing.

Witnessing Brother Xiang’s brutality and Chongzi’s deceit, they were very clear that letting Chongzi go was like letting a tiger back into the mountains, but actually forcing him to death, they couldn’t help but feel a twinge of guilt.

“Letting evil go unfinished will infinitely amplify the evil in human nature in this fucked-up world. If you two keep handling things with your old mindset, you’ll lose your lives!”

Standing on the midway of the eighth floor, Zhang Su looked at the blood-soaked scene on the wall and spoke with a very unpleasant expression.

“Can, can I borrow your axe for a bit?”

Zheng Xinyu pointed pitifully at the axe in Zhang Su’s hand.

“Scrape the wall clean, otherwise it might indeed attract zombies. Clean the door too, just toss the bodies downstairs, pile them up with the zombie corpses!”

Zhang Su handed the axe to Zheng Xinyu, with no intention of helping at all.

“Sister Xinyu, don’t blame Brother Su, I think his… his approach really fits this world now.”

Zhong Xiaoshan, seeing Zheng Xinyu carefully working while listening to the sounds from upstairs, couldn’t bear it and stayed to help her peel off the blood-soaked plaster from the walls.

Zheng Xinyu paused slightly, sighed, and said, “Sister Shanshan, I’m not blaming Brother Su, I’m just mad at myself for knowing what to do but unable to do it, almost causing big trouble for everyone.”

As she finished speaking, her eyes reddened, tears welling up as she quickened her movements, swish, swish, swish, the bloody plaster fell in a rustle under the scrape of the axe.
