Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Second Day

“I don’t understand, why even such powerful weapons can’t solve the zombies…”

Zheng Xinyu squatted on the ground, sobbing softly, mourning the heroes who sacrificed themselves, feeling sad for not being able to wait for rescue, and feeling lost and disappointed at the bleak future.

“I used to think, what are carbon-based creatures in the face of artillery? But now I don’t think that way anymore.”

Zhang Su shook his head, then continued, “My assumption was based on the military and police systems being fully intact, using heavy firepower could easily wipe out zombies, but… if the zombie virus is an indiscriminate infection, then…”

Human firearms are indeed very powerful, but no matter how powerful the weapons, they still need humans to operate, humans, living humans, uninfected living humans, are the key.

“If that’s the case, doesn’t that mean there’s no hope for rescue at all?”

Zheng Xinyu’s face was tear-stained as she looked at Zhang Su, despair written in her eyes.

If even the powerful firearms cannot resist, how are they, ordinary citizens who have never even touched a gun, supposed to resist?

“How could there be no hope?” Zhang Su placed a hand on Zheng Xinyu’s cold back, saying firmly, “Living is hope. Use all your strength to stay alive, we’ll talk when there’s no way out anymore!”

They lay back in bed, clearly very tired, but they couldn’t sleep, tossing and turning until they drifted off in a daze, waking up again to find it was already after nine o’clock in the morning.

“I’m going to check on Brother Li upstairs.” After breakfast, Zhang Su looked at Zheng Xinyu, who was tidying up the dishes, and said.

After getting up, neither of them mentioned last night’s cigarette incident, as if everything was normal, natural, and orderly.

No one took advantage of anyone, no one got the worse end of the deal. What they shared was a mutual comfort for the soul and body in times of crisis.

Zheng Xinyu wiped the bowls clean with a napkin and nodded, “Do you need me to go with you?”

If it were yesterday, she would have been puzzled as to why Zhang Su was so eager to search someone else’s house for supplies, but after last night’s scene, she understood that this would be a protracted battle, and longer-term plans were needed!

Even if Sheng Qin Home remains problem-free for now, their ability to go out and search for supplies is very limited, so starting with the nearest place isn’t wrong.

“No need, I’ll go myself, lock the door when I’m gone, keep exercising, don’t just train your upper body strength, work on your lower body too!”

As Zhang Su spoke, he walked to the window, slightly parted the curtains to take a look, the weather was clear and sunny, if not for the black smoke rising everywhere, it would have been a nice day.

“Got it! I’ll help you put on the arm guard.”

Zheng Xinyu carefully helped Zhang Su put on the arm guard and said with concern, “If there’s any problem, do not take risks!”

“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.”

Zhang Su squeezed Zheng Xinyu’s tender face, picked up the axe from the ground, and headed for the door.

“Hmm?”

Through the peephole, observing the situation outside, Zhang Su suddenly discovered that the zombie bodies they had smashed yesterday were gone, leaving only a dark trail stretching from the door of 802 to the emergency exit!

Originally, he planned to survey the corridor before considering moving the bodies out, but it seemed someone had already dragged them away before him…

“The zombie bodies outside are gone!”

Zhang Su’s scalp tightened, he turned and said to Zheng Xinyu, who was not far away.

“This… someone has been here? There are other survivors in the building!” Zheng Xinyu’s expression was strange. “But even so, why would someone need zombie bodies?”

Zhang Su shook his head, “Not sure! Let’s ask Zhong Xiaoshan.”

Gently opening the door to a crack, Zhang Su didn’t step out immediately, planning to observe the stairwell, but just then, the sound of a door opening came from opposite.

Zhong Xiaoshan came out from inside, wearing denim jeans and a tight knitted sweater today, different from yesterday’s nightgown, her face carrying a hint of fatigue.

“It’s me, it’s me!”

Zhong Xiaoshan walked to the front of door 801, seeing Zhang Su’s guarded and suspicious look, pointed to the safety door, and said, “I dragged the bodies away, don’t worry.”

“You!”

“You…”

The incredulous voices of Zhang Su and Zheng Xinyu sounded simultaneously, he looked at the seemingly weak woman in front of him with an incredulous gaze.

From beginning to end, neither of them had thought it was Zhong Xiaoshan who did it, but this was good, at least it dispelled doubts about whether anyone had been around.

“Well… the bodies blocked the doorway, they were a nuisance, not to mention, with the weather not yet cold, they would rot and breed germs, which is not good for us…”

Zhong Xiaoshan explained gently, seeming fatigued but clearly in a better state than yesterday.

“You’ve got some guts, and some strength too…”

Zhang Su opened the door to let Zhong Xiaoshan into the room, saying.

Zhong Xiaoshan tucked her slightly oily hair, smiling shyly, “You’re flattering me. Being a nurse at the hospital does not allow one to slack off, it’s given me some good training.”

“Pretty impressive. So, you’re here for a meal?”

Zhang Su asked, having promised to make instant noodles and river snail noodles for Zhong Xiaoshan, he wouldn’t go back on his word.

Zhong Xiaoshan shook her head, “No, I’m here to… I’m here to tell you something, we might not be getting rescue anytime soon!”

“You’re talking about the gunfire on the street last night, right?”

Zhang Su frowned and pointed in the direction of the shootout last night.

“That’s right, even such intense gunfire couldn’t defeat the zombies, I… I don’t want to wait for death, I want to join you, is that okay?”

Zhong Xiaoshan directly stated her intention.

She had almost a sleepless night, after witnessing that tragic scene, her heart felt like it was weighed down by a huge stone, incredibly heavy.

All along, Zhong Xiaoshan had greater hopes in the military than Zheng Xinyu had ever had, but when she saw that not even firearms could resist the zombie horde, she nearly despaired.

Zheng Xinyu had Zhang Su’s encouragement to walk out of despair, while Zhong Xiaoshan endured the grueling night and, surrounded by darkness and fear, a flicker of hope for survival ignited in her heart.

She knew very well that if she only relied on herself, a woman, not to mention breaking out, even living in Sheng Qin Home would be a problem, joining Zhang Su and Zheng Xinyu would be an excellent choice.

Unfortunately, the decision of whether she could join was not up to her.

Zhang Su sized up Zhong Xiaoshan seriously from top to bottom, immediately realizing that dragging the zombie bodies away was her way of showcasing her abilities.

“I don’t need a woman who screams at the sight of zombies.”

At this, Zhong Xiaoshan’s fair face slightly reddened, she pursed her lips and said, “I promise it won’t happen again, yesterday was the first time… but I have a strong ability to adapt!”

After saying this, Zhong Xiaoshan straightened her chest, as if declaring her resolve to a superior.

“Talking is useless, if you want to prove you’re useful, there’s a good opportunity now!”

Zhang Su, having witnessed Zhong Xiaoshan’s transformation, aside from being a mistress, saw merits in her, being able to emerge from despair and ignite a strong will to survive is impressive!

The will to survive is extremely important at this moment. If one’s heart is dead and full of pessimism, they’ll be in a state of negativity about everything, and death will be near!
