Apocalypse: the Most Ruthless Person

Chapter 36: Chapter 36: No Right or Wrong in Survival

“Listen, what sound is that?”

The three were packing their bags in delight when Zhang Su suddenly raised his hand to signal the two women to pause and tilted his ear towards the door.

“Brother Su, it sounds like the elevator?”

Zhong Xiaoshan glanced nervously at the door.

Zhang Su’s expression tightened. Grabbing a case of bottled water he hadn’t had time to pack, he dashed across the blood-stained entrance, opened the door abruptly after confirming through the peephole that the hallway was clear.

Buzzing buzzing…

In the quiet apartment unit, the sound of the elevator’s operation was particularly clear.

Red numbers: 7, 8, 9…

“Someone’s using the elevator downstairs!”

From the timing, Zhang Su was certain the elevator wasn’t starting upwards from the sixth floor; if it were, it wouldn’t be moving just one floor after this time!

“Forgive my unbridled life, never fearing… ooh, ooh!”

As the elevator ascended, a muffled music played from the cab, interspersed with the distinct growls and crashes unique to zombies.

“This is…”

A surge exploded in Zhang Su’s mind, and he urgently returned to 1101, waving his hand, “Quick, zombies are coming up the elevator, hurry!”

“Coming, coming!”

As they responded, Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan put on their backpacks and followed Zhang Su out through the safety door.

“Go, Brother Su, what are you doing?”

Seeing Zhang Su leaning out from the side of the safety door and looking at the elevator display, Zheng Xinyu anxiously tugged his arm.

“Eleven, eleven didn’t stop, good good, go!”

Zhang Su rushed out the door, but instead of heading down immediately, he listened for any movements.

Ooh, ooh…

The elevator stopped at the twelfth floor. As the cab opened, a series of roars erupted, and the previously playing music had stopped, likely because the playing device was destroyed by zombies.

Giving a signal to the two women, Zhang Su did not linger but quietly returned to the eighth floor with them.

“Someone downstairs led the zombies to the twelfth floor!”

Back in 801, Zhang Su felt a relief in his nerves. Though he hadn’t fought much this trip, he was still tired from the tension.

“They’re doing it to escape the complex, right?”

While Zheng Xinyu transferred supplies from her backpack to the coffee table, she spoke.

Zhang Su nodded, “Most likely. Otherwise, who would risk playing games with zombies? I just don’t know which floor the survivors downstairs are on. They must have lured the unit’s zombies into the elevator…”

“But how did they get zombies to press the button?” Zheng Xinyu asked, puzzled.

Zhang Su thought and said, “They must have pressed the button in advance, then made noise to attract the zombies inside. They wouldn’t get stuck in the elevator doors. Once the doors closed, it’s a done deal.”

Simple as it sounds, Zhang Su knew executing such an operation was anything but easy.

Zhong Xiaoshan, frustrated, pinched her slightly sore arm, saying, “We worked so hard to clean upstairs, and now we bring up a whole new group. Seriously!”

Today was her first real encounter with zombies, and the help of her companions made her feel more confident after dealing with them. Finding plenty of food and drink had initially put her in a good mood, now all ruined.

No matter if the upper floors still held usable resources, they were safety routes, now all that effort’s wasted.

“Yeah, so annoying, those selfish guys!”

Hearing Zhong Xiaoshan’s complaint, Zheng Xinyu also fumed, recalling the risks and effort they took killing zombies.

In contrast, Zhang Su was calmly counting supplies, seemingly unaffected by the incident.

“Brother Su, you’re so calm, not like your personality!”

Zheng Xinyu said, pouting.

“Not like my personality? What’s my personality, little girl trying to figure me out?”

Zhang Su looked at Zheng Xinyu with a teasing smile.

“Given your black-hearted, vengeful, petty, cunning personality, cleaning up the floor so hard, now it’s ruined, aren’t you mad, aren’t you furious?”

Zheng Xinyu stood one-hand on her hip, head tilted at Zhang Su who tore open a Snickers and ate it with gusto.

“You really rate me too high, I don’t deserve it.”

Zhang Su first sarcastically shot back, then said, “Firstly, there’s nothing wrong if anyone uses the elevator to transfer zombies; it’s their right. Plus, downstairs survivors might not know we’re up here!”

“Standing in a third-party position to protect one group by selectively sacrificing another, it’s hard to judge right or wrong. But if it’s for one’s survival by sacrificing unrelated people, from any angle, it’s understandable, even if I’m the one sacrificed!”

“Similarly, if it comes to sacrificing others to save yourselves, you two may have guilt, even remorse, but don’t hesitate!”

Zhang Su said seriously.

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan both fell silent, Zhang Su’s words impacting their world view. But looking at this world…

A world view needs a vast world as its base, the old world now almost nonexistent, the original mindset won’t work in this new world.

“This world has become so brutal…” Zheng Xinyu lamented.

“This is just the beginning!”

Zhang Su squinted, having dealt with many over ten years, witnessing deceit, betrayal, and treachery—intimately aware of human wickedness.

“If order isn’t restored soon, if this chaotic state drags on, you must shatter all traditional concepts quickly. Any unimaginable thing happening should never surprise you!”

“Got it, Brother Su.”

Zhong Xiaoshan nodded solemnly.

Zheng Xinyu said nothing, but pursed her lips and nodded.

“Actually, I’m just worried about finding ways to train, and a good soul sent a bunch of zombies, how could I not be grateful!”

Zhang Su said, smiling and shaking his leg.

“What do you mean… are you planning to take us to wipe out those zombies completely?”

Seeing the smile on Zhang Su’s face, Zheng Xinyu instantly guessed his intention, her face twitching.

Zhang Su picked up another Snickers from the coffee table, tore it open, stuffed it in his mouth, munching it, as he propped his feet on a corner of the table, saying slowly.

“Seeing the current situation, it’s impossible this disaster will be controlled shortly. This place is only a temporary refuge. We’ll definitely need to go out, leave the unit, exit Sheng Qin Home, even get out of the city!”

If the least willing to leave among the three, it must be Zhang Su, for this apartment was his, his home in Qin City.

“This house is like a newbie village. We can’t stay here forever. Yesterday, those five just left the newbie village and lost the first teammate. As for us, when will casualties occur, who wishes to get hurt, who wants to die to zombies?”

Though not loud, Zhang Su’s voice carried deep coldness, the zombie roars, the death pressure, stifling people.

“I don’t want that!”

Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan shook their heads vigorously, remembering vividly the scene of the man being bitten to death yesterday.

“If not, then train, train hard! From today, no limit on food and drink, double the training intensity!”

After scouring households for food supplies, Zhang Su was assured, knowing once able to venture out, with the population reducing drastically, supplies wouldn’t be lacking!
