Apocalypse: I Built a City of Sin

“Ruoqing, Keke, take a team and clear the remaining zombies from the classroom building and landscaped area.”

Xiao Yi had already swept through both places once, so there were barely any zombies left.

They would be perfect practice for the members of the Women’s Personal Guard.

“I spent 856 Apocalypse Coins, which leaves me with 349.”

Xiao Yi opened the building list.

【Slave Quarters: A twenty-square-meter residence for the slaves of the City Lord. Each occupant receives a two-square-meter private cell and is completely isolated while resting. Price: 50 Apocalypse Coins.】

He still had enough coins to build several Slave Quarters.

In the future, anyone he subjugated through force could be locked inside them.

Xiao Yi walked into the Outer City and selected an empty plot.

“System, build Slave Quarters here.”

【Slave Quarters selected. Requirements met.】

【50 Apocalypse Coins consumed...】

【Construction in progress...】

As the synthetic voice faded, a sinister wooden cabin materialized before Xiao Yi.

“Build another Slave Quarters here!”

After constructing two of them, Xiao Yi had 249 Apocalypse Coins remaining.

“Then summon two more Wandering Hounds to guard the Outer City Wall. I also want two more Three-Eyed Ravens constantly scouting the area around the city.”

【Three-Eyed Raven: The eyes of the City Lord. Capable of low-altitude flight and possessing a transparent body. The City Lord may control it to scout a three-thousand-meter radius around the City of Sin. Creatures with a Spirit attribute below 80 cannot detect it. Price: 60 Apocalypse Coins.】

【Wandering Hound: Attacks any living creature that enters the City of Sin without authorization. Price: 50 Apocalypse Coins.】

Xiao Yi summoned two Wandering Hounds and two Three-Eyed Ravens.

Only after completing those arrangements was he satisfied.

“Master, Master! We’re almost out of C-rank zombies...”

Just then, Shen Tingting reported over the radio that the city’s stockpile of C-rank zombies was nearly exhausted.

After several days of uninterrupted burial, they had used almost all of them.

Xiao Yi returned to the city and dragged out several human corpses. He attempted to infect them with C-rank zombies, then killed them again after they transformed.

The result was far less effective than he had hoped. Only thirty percent of the human corpses successfully transformed into C-rank zombies.

Most became ordinary zombies instead.

That left his supply of C-rank corpses dangerously low.

“Three-Eyed Ravens, search the surrounding area for C-rank zombies.”

Xiao Yi directed the ravens with his mind, sending them in different directions while he raced through the city and hunted C-rank zombies himself.

“Beep, beep, beep... Large group of C-rank zombies detected... Mutant detected... Beep, beep, beep...”

As Xiao Yi continued his hunt, one of the Three-Eyed Ravens suddenly discovered an important target.

He immediately shifted his vision to that raven.

More than a thousand meters from his current position, a pack of C-rank Agility-Type Zombies was chasing a young woman.

She was astonishingly fast and agile.

Even as she darted between them, she managed to counterattack.

But she had clearly been injured. Although she could still maintain enough speed to flee, her attacks were weak and could not inflict fatal wounds on the C-rank zombies.

“A woman with cat ears?”

Xiao Yi directed the Three-Eyed Raven closer.

The woman actually possessed a cat’s ears and tail.

She otherwise appeared human, but every movement resembled that of a cat—supple, agile, and endlessly unpredictable.

“She’s a mutant. She might even be the cat-eared mutant Ma Chenbin and his people were searching for!”

Excitement surged through Xiao Yi.

But the moment he saw the catgirl’s face clearly, he froze.

“Lan Siruo!” he exclaimed.

The catgirl was Lan Siruo, the beautiful classmate he had quietly admired throughout three years of university.

Many people claimed she was only pretty enough to be their class beauty, not the beauty of the entire university.

But in Xiao Yi’s eyes, she had always been the most beautiful woman on campus.

Lan Siruo perfectly matched his tastes.

More importantly, she was gentle and kind to everyone.

She was nothing like the vain and arrogant women who were commonly praised as class or campus beauties.

She and Xiao Yi had been classmates and had even shared a desk for a while.

As class president, Lan Siruo always looked after everyone in their class.

People said her heart was every bit as beautiful as her face.

Even toward a penniless nobody like Xiao Yi, Lan Siruo had always been friendly. The two of them had even become friends.

For three years, Xiao Yi had secretly admired her without ever daring to confess.

He had assumed she had already become a zombie or ended up as food for one.

He never imagined she would become a mutant—much less one with feline traits.

Before the apocalypse, Lan Siruo had adored cats. She had even kept an incredibly cute, pure-white Scottish Fold in her dormitory.

Perhaps her love of cats explained why she had acquired feline characteristics after becoming a mutant.

Back then, the gulf between their circumstances had seemed impossibly vast, so Xiao Yi had never told her how he felt.

Even though Lan Siruo treated him well, he understood that theirs was a world of increasingly rigid class divisions. An uncrossable chasm separated them.

Nor did Xiao Yi want to become a bootlicker.

So he buried those feelings in his heart and told no one.

But times had changed. The entire world had changed.

There was no longer any gulf between them.

And if there was, Lan Siruo was now the one unworthy of Xiao Yi.

If he wanted her, obtaining her would be effortless.

Yet Xiao Yi no longer felt the same desperate impulse.

To the man he had become, romantic love was little more than a joke.

Whenever he remembered his old self-pity and constant anxiety, he could not help finding it ridiculous.

Still, the two of them had once been friends. With Lan Siruo in danger, Xiao Yi would not hesitate to help her.

Besides, he could harvest a whole pack of C-rank zombies in the process.

Xiao Yi withdrew his vision from the raven, kicked off the ground, and raced toward Lan Siruo’s location.

At the same time, Lan Siruo had reached a dead end.

More than twenty C-rank Agility-Type Zombies had trapped her in a corner, leaving her no possible escape route.

Behind them, a grotesque spider-like zombie appeared to be commanding the others.

It possessed three human heads, eight legs, and two pairs of arms.

It looked as if several zombies had been dismembered and crudely stitched back together into one hideous creature.

Every time one of its enormous mouths opened, it released a sonic wave.

Lan Siruo would cry out in agony as though suffering a devastating mental attack.

Ordinarily, those C-rank zombies could not have harmed her.

But the spider zombie’s attacks repeatedly disrupted her movements.

The other zombies had already struck her several times, leaving wounds across her body.

At last, Lan Siruo had nowhere left to retreat.
