Gun of Ashes

Chapter 520: Chapter 110 Undead

The Demon Hunters arrived, delivering a devastating blow to the manor. Shermans’ guards were no match for them. The more experienced guards vaguely knew who these people were, and terror showed on their faces. Some even began to flee.

But this was a massacre— the Demon Hunters were not letting anyone escape. Just as Shermans had said, many fled toward the countryside railroad, hoping to board a passing train, but the open ground offered no cover.

Bodies fell one after another, blood mingling with the falling rain and spreading over the emerald grass, as if the heavens themselves were mourning this massacre.

Lorenzo stopped his frantic run, gazing out the window as the rain fell, creating a mist. He could see the fires raging in the manor and the corpses outside. Demon Hunters roamed like lost souls in the rain, hunting down anyone attempting to escape, with sporadic gunshots ringing — presumably the remaining guards.

Lorenzo shifted his gaze back, hiding the hand holding the Lacquered Antimony Flying Knife in the shadows, while his other hand gripped the Nail Sword, with several Folding Blades tucked at his waist. The battle seemed far from over.

Footsteps echoed, mingling with other noises. Lorenzo pressed against the wall, prepared to attack. He could throw the Lacquered Antimony Flying Knife the instant enemies appeared, taking advantage of the explosion to continue his assault until they were entirely incapacitated.

The door at the other end of the corridor was pushed open. Just as Lorenzo was about to throw the Flying Knife, he saw who it was — Yage, struggling with a cane in one hand and holding a pistol in the other, bloodied and wounded, yet somehow surviving the Demon Hunters’ assault.

He looked extremely disheveled, face pale, and blood streamed down his cane.

Yage and Lorenzo faced each other from opposite sides of the corridor. Yage appeared terrified initially, but that fear quickly faded, raising his pistol to aim at Lorenzo.

Whatever he thought, Yage hadn’t expected Lorenzo to be here. The chase through the Rat Nest had shown Yage that he was no match for Lorenzo. Though doomed, he stubbornly raised his gun.

”Lorenzo!”

Aging voice called out as Shermans emerged from the other side, surprisingly having not fled far.

His appearance eased the tense atmosphere slightly. Yage paused in disbelief, staring at the seemingly sorrowful old man.

Shermans was in terrible condition, with sword and burn wounds all over, swollen blisters shriveled, much like tree bark clinging to his aged face.

His pristine church robe was burned and blood-soaked, making him unrecognizable as the exalted Cardinal he once was.

”Sir!”

Yage hobbled over with his cane, barely able to stand, yet insistently helping Shermans.

”Now is not the time for master-servant sentimentality. The new Order’s Demon Hunters have surrounded us. We must find a way to escape.”

Lorenzo watched them coldly, aware death could come at any moment.

Although he could fight the Demon Hunters, Lorenzo couldn’t protect Shermans simultaneously, and with more Hunters, Lorenzo himself might perish here.

Lorenzo’s focus was solely on Shermans; he didn’t bother looking at Yage, as he thought Yage had no chance of survival.

Yage, after examining Shermans’ wounds, offered Lorenzo a wary glance.

”Lorenzo... Lorenzo Holmes.”

Supported by Yage, Shermans weakly spoke, while gunfire intensified outside, mixing with thunder, deafening.

”Old man, I have many questions for you!” Lorenzo urgently said.

Any moment a Demon Hunter could emerge from the shadows to kill Shermans. Lorenzo cared nothing for Shermans’ fate, but he did care for the secrets held in Shermans’ mind.

”What are you doing!”

Seeing Lorenzo’s rough treatment of Shermans, Yage angrily raised his gun, only to be stopped by Shermans.

”Ask away, child. As I’ve said, I’ll answer everything.

Shermans showed a bitter smile; caught between life and death, he could do little but hope with Lorenzo. Though Shermans had never truly understood Lorenzo, at this moment, the former ”Medanzo” was the only one he could trust.

This was neither the place nor the time for conversation, but Lorenzo had no time to ponder that. He condensed all his inner questions into one, leading him to his final enigma, the sole clue.

”Lorenzo de’ Medici.”

This name made Shermans pause, never expecting to hear it here again.

”Lorenzo de’ Medici... what truly happened in his later years?” Lorenzo asked.

He had no time to unravel his identity mystery or the strange memories where Lorenzo de’ Medici appeared; he could only encapsulate his concern.
