Gun of Ashes

Chapter 455: Chapter 75: Funeral

This is a very strange feeling, Lorenzo also finds it hard to describe, but he can truly feel a sudden surge of anger in his heart. It’s not directed towards Anthony or anyone else, but a sense of being toyed with, as if something has been forgotten, yet he feels powerless because he can’t remember no matter what.

”You said, I am... Medanzo?”

Lorenzo looked at Anthony, clenching his fists, his gaze swept across the faces, and then the anger in his heart suddenly cooled down.

Arthur, Merlin... everyone, they all had similar looks to Anthony, a mixture of pity and sorrow, as if Lorenzo really was some pitiful guy living in self-deception all along.

”Medanzo is already dead, dead on the Night of the Holy Arrival. I am Lorenzo Holmes, Demon Hunting Order number 042!”

Lorenzo wanted to shout with all his might, but the words felt weak when they reached his lips.

This all happened so quickly, without giving anyone any time to prepare.

”Why do you continue to deceive yourself? Concealing the truth will only make your situation worse, Mr. Holmes.”

Anthony seemed like a judge, scrutinizing this confused lamb bit by bit.

”Your true identity is 047, the Demon Hunter named Medanzo. On the Night of the Holy Arrival, you seized the Pseudo Holy Grail and used it to escape from the Holy Evangelical Pope Kingdom. After arriving in Old Dunling, you continued to act under the name Lorenzo Holmes.”

”No! I am 042.”

It was rare, for some reason on this issue of identity, Lorenzo had rarely lost his reason. He didn’t employ his usual cunning and deceit against Anthony.

He was like a pathological zealot, Lorenzo seemed to be emphasizing his identity, stubbornly, as if words had magic power, and that through mechanical repetition, everything would become true.

”I’m afraid your deceit ends here, Mr. Holmes.”

Anthony continued speaking, certain of his victory.

”042 does not exist. It was merely a way you used to deceive others... It’s quite clever, under your story, you successfully faked ’your’ death and lived as 042.”

Lorenzo stared intently at Anthony. Even when faced with tide-like Demons, the nearly insoluble Dean Lawrence, or even the despair of the Night of the Holy Arrival, he had never been afraid. But this time, Lorenzo couldn’t understand why it was happening this way.

It seemed as if something was about to emerge, from his stomach, fragile heart, brain, from those places that couldn’t be observed. Countless hands reached out, scrambling to break free from this pitiful shell.

From those memories he was unwilling to recall and deliberately forgot.

”042... does not exist?”

Lorenzo... or rather 042, looked at Anthony with confusion and doubt, and all those unknown fears.

”Literal meaning, 042 does not exist.”

Anthony directly denied the existence of 042, the existence Lorenzo considered as himself.

”In fact, this conversation has been premeditated for a long time. After all, you also experienced the Night of the Holy Arrival, possessing the Pseudo Holy Grail, you are very dangerous, a kind of unknown danger. So, to thoroughly convince you or to have you calmly talk with us, we made a lot of preparations.”

Another document was taken out, Lorenzo had long been their target, and they had prepared for today’s conversation for a long time.

”This is the Demon Hunter list, according to the records on it, and the mission records of the Demon Hunting Order... None of these records have the number 042... Accurately speaking, the Demon Hunting Order has never used this number, the Demon Hunter of this number doesn’t exist.”

The document slid along the smooth table surface, the paper somewhat yellowed. This was a record from before the Night of the Holy Arrival, impossible to fake.

”You say I... do not exist?”

Lorenzo said, almost in disbelief.

”You are 047, named Medanzo.” He answered coldly.

”This can’t be... impossible! I am 042... I... I...”

Lorenzo looked at the document in front of him, desperately wanting to find something that could prove his identity, but there was nothing, nothing at all.

Arthur had remained silent, only to see the panicked Lorenzo raise his head. This was the first time Arthur had seen Lorenzo like this, like a trapped beast in a cage, frantically crashing against solid iron walls, but to no avail.

”I... Valley of Horror, I and 016 and 011...”

Like grasping for a lifeline, Lorenzo’s voice trembled a bit.

”You mean the Valley of Horror operation? That’s on the second page, the participants are you, 047, 011, 016, and there is no 042.”

Anthony had made all the preparations, and upon hearing this, Lorenzo immediately turned to the second page. The handwriting was familiar, although it had been a long time, he could still recognize his own handwriting in the task report he wrote, but the participant was replaced from 042 to 047.

No... This isn’t right, I truly exist, 042 exists, I am the best proof.

Lorenzo frantically searched through the files in front of him, but found nothing. No matter how he rearranged the characters, he couldn’t find something to prove his point.

”Are you going to keep playing dumb? Mr. Holmes, your lie has been exposed.”

Anthony continued to pressure him.

”No! This is fake, I am 042! Lorenzo Holmes! Medanzo is already dead! I witnessed his death with my own eyes!”

Finally, Lorenzo couldn’t hold back his anger and shouted. The dazzling light flickered in his eyes, and this sign made everyone present tense up.
