Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 143: Chapter 143: The Daughter Who Was Sold Off 7

After dinner, the spirited Old Man Qian took Ge Sangen to the back mountain. ”Let’s take a walk and see if we can bring back some game for the kids. This girl is too thin.”

Hunting to give his daughter something to eat, Ge Sangen was all in favor.

The father-in-law and son-in-law happily set off.

Seeing this, the three Qian boys also ran home, grabbed a net and a wooden bucket, and went to the fields to catch some game.

Even Uncle Qian joined his three sons for some fun.

By around ten at night, both groups returned home one after another.

Ge Sangen cheerfully brought back a chubby wild chicken. ”Yuan Chun is in for a treat! Not long after Dad and I went up the mountain, we caught a wild chicken and even found a nest of wild eggs.”

”Great! We’re running low on eggs at home. I was thinking of buying some from the Third Aunt’s place tomorrow, cooking one a day for Yuan Chun.”

”There are over twenty of them. Enough for Yuan Chun for a while.”

”We can’t give them all to Yuan Chun. Let’s save some for the three boys too.” Qian Xiaoying smiled, tying up the chicken leg, planning to butcher it in the morning.

Old Man Qian came in with a small basket, heard his daughter and son-in-law’s conversation, and chimed in, ”Don’t save any for them. They’re sturdy. You give them all to Yuan Chun. This girl’s so thin, she mustn’t have gotten much good food with her birth parents. If we don’t properly nourish her, she might get sick easily.”

”Then let’s send a few to Uncle; we owe him for helping with the paperwork today.” Ge Sangen suggested, ”After work tomorrow, I’ll go to the mountain again and see if I can bring back some goodies.”

Old Man Qian nodded.

Just as he was about to leave after setting down the eggs, he saw his son coming back with his three grandsons.

Qian Xiao San ran over with a small wooden bucket. ”Grandpa, sister, Auntie, Uncle, look! We caught a lot of fish and shrimp.”

Yuan Chun peeked in, seeing more than half a bucket filled, indeed quite a lot.

Qian Xiaoying reached in and grabbed a handful, seeing they were only as big as her little finger, she laughed, ”How do we cook fish this small?”

Uncle Qian laughed sheepishly, ”Though small, they still count as meat. You can make some fish and shrimp soup to nourish Yuan Chun.”

”Auntie, we’ve got frogs too. Dad caught three big ones; cook them for sister to eat.”

Qian Xiao’er handed over three big, green frogs tied with wild grass to Qian Xiaoying.

Qian Xiaoying laughed, ”These are tasty. I’ll make them tomorrow night. Everyone come over for dinner.”

...

At night, with no spare bed, Yuan Chun and Qian Xiaoying slept together, while Ge Sangen took down a door, laid it on the floor, and slept there. In the hot summer, they didn’t even bother with blankets, fearing the heat more than the cold.

The next morning, Ge Sangen went to the village carpenter’s house and ordered a wooden bed, a wardrobe, a chest, and two small wooden stools.

When he returned home, he tidied up the west room, piling all the odds and ends in the storeroom. Only three large jars remained in the room.

Village folks like to use large clay jars to store grain. They keep pests away and prevent mold.

As Ge Sangen was about to move the jars to the east room where he and his wife stayed, Yuan Chun walked in, smiling and asked, ”Dad, is this room for me?”

”Yes, once Dad moves these three big jars out, the room will be empty. When the bed and wardrobe arrive, you’ll sleep here. Your mom has two new sets of bridal bedding in her chest that haven’t been used yet. She’ll lay out a set for you.”

”Dad, just leave these three jars here. They don’t bother me.”

They’re convenient for storing grain inside.
