The Last Silver

Chapter 44: A Future Worth Finding

“Get us out of here.”

Dinraal’s voice cut through the silence on the bridge.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Beyond the forward windows, the stars were disappearing.

Something impossibly vast occupied the darkness where they had been. The fleet’s instruments struggled to describe it, producing measurements that contradicted one another before failing altogether.

Every screen still carried the same words.

THE FIRST QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED.

NOW THE QUESTIONER COMES.

“Navigation,” Dinraal said, louder. “Find us a route. All ships prepare to jump.”

The bridge erupted into motion.

Officers shouted coordinates. Warning tones overlapped. Someone at the communications station tried to clear the message from their display, only for it to return.

Beside Dinraal, Tiamat stood utterly still.

He had seen his mother angry. He had seen her wounded, grieving, and exhausted.

He had never seen her look so small.

“Tiamat.”

Her eyes remained on the windows.

Aramaeis reached her first, closing a hand around her shoulder.

“Sister.”

She flinched.

Then she looked at him, and whatever she saw in her brother’s face brought her back.

“We cannot fight it,” she said.

Dinraal glanced toward Isolde.

Silver had already spread over her fingers. His own gauntlet had risen to his elbow without a conscious command.

Neither of them suggested staying.

“How long?” Isolde asked the navigator.

“Lead ships can jump in forty seconds. The rear transports need longer.”

“How much longer?”

“One has an unstable drive coupling.”

A vessel marker flashed amber on the tactical projection.

Then red.

Dinraal touched the communications panel.

“Transport captain. Can your coupling be repaired?”

A strained voice answered through static.

“Not before that thing reaches us.”

“How many aboard?”

“Eight hundred and twelve.”

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

She was already moving.

“Open the launch bay,” she said.

Outside the flagship, the silence was worse.

There was no roar from the approaching presence. No engine flare. No visible weapon preparing to fire.

Only the gradual loss of the sky.

Dinraal forced himself to look away.

The damaged transport hung beyond the fleet’s rear formation, its engines flickering unevenly. Isolde reached it a heartbeat ahead of him, silver spreading from her palms across the hull.

“Tell me you have a plan,” he said.

“I was hoping you did.”

“Excellent.”

“Dinraal.”

“I’m thinking.”

He pressed his gauntlet against the transport.

The silver responded.

Information crowded his awareness: stress fractures, overheated conduits, a drive assembly shaking itself apart as its crew tried desperately to coax it into readiness.

He did not understand every component.

But he understood something broken trying to hold together.

“There,” he said.

“I feel it.”

Their silver met beneath the hull.

A brace formed around the damaged assembly. Isolde extended it inward, following the failing structure, while Dinraal took the strain that threatened to tear the repair apart.

Pain lanced through his forearm.

The transport’s engines steadied.

“Captain,” he said through clenched teeth. “Try now.”

Behind them, something changed.

He felt it before the instruments registered anything.

A pressure.

An attention.

The terrible certainty that, among all the vessels fleeing before it, something had noticed him.

“Dinraal.”

Isolde’s voice was close and urgent.

“Stay with me.”

He looked at her.

At the silver over her cheeks. At her eyes.

The pressure did not disappear, but he could think again.

“Jump,” he ordered.

The transport vanished.

For an instant, the silver connecting them stretched into a line of unbearable brightness.

Then it broke free.

Dinraal staggered in empty space.

Isolde caught his wrist.

The flagship’s launch bay waited ahead, its doors still open.

They reached it as the final countdown began.

Behind them, the darkness continued to spread.

Nobody cheered after the jump.

Dinraal understood why.

Survival felt incomplete while everyone still expected the screens to change.

“Fleet count,” he said.

The communications officer checked once.

Then again.

“All vessels accounted for.”

Dinraal closed his eyes.

Only briefly.

“Make another jump. Different bearing. Send the coordinates through the fleet before we move.”

Arcturus nodded from the tactical station.

“And after that?”

“We find out whether it’s following.”

They jumped three times before allowing the fleet to rest.

At the third location, the stars remained where they belonged.

Eve insisted that this was encouraging without being conclusive.

Gilgamesh informed her that he preferred his encouraging news without qualifications.

“Then you should stop asking scientists,” she replied.

They gathered in a cramped briefing room while repair crews worked throughout the fleet. Nobody had bothered changing clothes. Tiamat sat beside Aramaeis, her hands wrapped around a cup she had not touched.

Asha projected the last clear image captured before their escape.

Most of it was darkness.

A narrow crescent of visible stars bordered something the recording could not resolve.

“The Sovereign called it the thing that made the Ashen,” she began. “We have that statement, the message transmitted to our systems, and the sensor records from its arrival.”

“Can you trace the transmission?” Aurelius asked.

“No conventional source.” Eve folded her arms. “Several displays received it despite being disconnected from external communications.”

Julius looked toward the image.

“That sounds less like a transmission.”

“Yes,” Eve said. “It does.”

Dinraal turned to Tiamat.

“You recognized it.”

His sister’s grip tightened around the cup.

“I recognized what happened when it came.”

He waited.

“The readings stopped agreeing. Distance became unreliable. You could look at something and know where it was, then look at the instruments and find three different answers.” She swallowed. “And there was that feeling.”

“Of being watched,” Dinraal said.

Tiamat looked sharply at him.

“Yes.”

Isolde’s hand settled over his beneath the table.

Asha noticed, but continued without comment.

“We should assume that anything recorded during the encounter may contain errors. We’ll compare independent instruments, isolate the original logs, and work from copies.”

“What about Imperial records?” Cleopatra asked.

“That’s our best chance,” Eve said. “Old survey losses, unexplained contact events, references to the Ashen before anyone knew what they were. We may find descriptions under another name.”

“The Questioner,” Johanna murmured. “What was the question?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Dinraal looked at the frozen words on the projection.

The first question has been answered.

“We defeated the Sovereign,” he said. “Then it came.”

“That establishes sequence,” Asha replied gently. “We don’t yet know what it means.”

He nodded.

He disliked the uncertainty.

He trusted her more for refusing to hide it.

“Find out what you can. And keep a list of what we actually know.”

Aurelius leaned forward.

“In the meantime, we rejoin the Imperial colony.”

Arcturus’s expression tightened.

“If we’re being followed, we could lead it to them.”

“We use the outer rendezvous,” Aurelius said. “No direct approach until the scouts have watched our arrival point and cleared the route.”

Dinraal studied the fleet status.

Damaged ships. Exhausted crews. Hundreds of people sleeping in temporary medical wards.

“We need their docks,” he said. “And they need to know what’s coming.”

The reunion took place beyond the colony’s normal traffic lanes.

Imperial patrol vessels arrived first, followed by repair tenders and medical transports. Only after a long, anxious watch did the fleet receive clearance to approach.

Through the flagship’s windows, the Imperial colony appeared almost painfully familiar.

Dinraal had not realized how badly he needed to see something that had survived in his absence.

Aurelius stood beside him.

“There are people waiting in the docking concourse,” he said.

“How many?”

“Enough that security has given up asking them to move.”

Dinraal let out a tired breath.

“Are they angry?”

“Some. You brought their families back badly injured.”

He looked at Aurelius.

The older man’s expression softened.

“You brought them back.”

The scientists arrived before Dinraal had managed more than a few hours of sleep.

Asha opened the conference-room door with a tablet beneath one arm and the expression of someone who had forgotten that other people required rest.

“We found something.”

Dinraal sat straighter.

“The Questioner?”

“Not yet. We’ve started cross-referencing the records.”

Eve entered behind her with three Imperial researchers.

“The system survey,” she said. “We think we have a candidate.”

That brought everyone’s attention to the table.

A star appeared above it.

Then planets.

A broad belt of debris. Several outer giants. An inner world marked with atmospheric and surface measurements.

The senior Imperial researcher enlarged the fourth planet.

Blue water curved beneath bands of white cloud.

Dinraal stared.

He had seen worlds from orbit before.

For reasons he could not immediately explain, this one made his chest ache.

“Stable primary,” the researcher said. “A rocky fourth planet with surface water and gravity within our acceptable range. Atmospheric readings are promising. We’ll need direct biological sampling before anyone walks around without protection.”

“Resources?” Arcturus asked.

“Abundant material in the belt. Multiple sites suitable for orbital industry. The outer moons should support fuel processing once we have the equipment in place.”

“Settlements?” Cleopatra asked.

“No detected artificial emissions. No mapped Imperial holdings.”

“Ashen?” Dinraal asked.

The researcher hesitated.

“None detected by the survey probes.”

“Probe age?”

“Recent enough to make this worth investigating. Not recent enough to promise safety.”

Eve gave the researcher an approving glance.

Isolde leaned closer to the projection.

A continent rotated into view, green along its coast and pale where mountains rose inland.

“Could we bring everyone there?”

The room quieted.

The researcher looked toward the logistics figures.

“In stages,” she said. “With orbital infrastructure, prefabricated shelters, and a great deal of work.”

“Every colony that wants to come,” Dinraal said.

Aurelius studied him.

“That will be a considerable undertaking.”

“I know.”

“We will need people to survey, build, transport, feed—”

“I know,” Dinraal repeated, more softly. “But we keep finding people too far away to help in time.”

No one argued with that.

Asha turned the planet slowly.

“This could give us somewhere to start.”

Dinraal looked at Isolde.

For the first time since the Questioner’s arrival, she was smiling.
